Which is better : Enabling Cool'N Quiet or disabling it ?

Hi !
I enabled the Cool'N Quiet , but the CPU-Z shows the CoreSpeed 1004.9 MHz , is that because enabling the Cool'N Quiet ? If yes , isn't it better that the CoreSpeed has high MHz ?
Any explanation plz ? because I am confused and newbie with all this thing beside I don't overclock anything .
Thanks in Advance !

Then I'll turn it off , cuz anyhow I feel my PC went bad after enabled that , but I asked here to be sure if it is usefull anyway , then your reply changed my mind

To solve this, ENABLE cool and QUIET in bios and set you settings in windows to ALWAYS ON or a DESKTOP machine. If so it will automaticaly make cool and quiet go off and when you want it again just enable portable in the settings in windows XP.
Yes, I noticed this behaviour also.  Moreover I would like to see a feature that enables you to create some kind of power profile.  A profile that says e.g: "don't minimize power until load 5 minutes less than 10". It's now all or nothing.....

  • I enabled Cool'n Quiet but No Functionality !!

    Hi !
I enabled the Cool'N Quiet exactly as in this URL explained http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/Cool_N_Quiet_Installation_Guide3.pdf also I have Windows XP with SP1 , I downloaded the last CPU Driver and installed it , I enabled the Cool'N Quiet from the BIOS , then after rebooting and entered the Windows, I went to Power Options from the Control Panal then I choosed "Minimal Power Management" from the "Power Schemes" ..
After that I rebooted my PC and then wanted to check the Cool'N Quiet Functionality , I went to "System"  from the control panal , but in the "General" there was no "800 MHz" appeared ... What did I do wrong ? Or what is still missing ? Does that mean that Cool'N Quiet isn't enabled yet ?
    Any comment please ?

Thanks Eergassie for your reply ...
I see "1.81 GHz" instead of "800 MHz" or "1 GHz" , is that what they meant with checking the Cool'NQuiet Functionality ?
And my BIOS ver. is 1.1

  • How do we enable Cool N Quiet?

Just don't tell me that a memory chip in DIMM1 is a must, because my RAM works at DDR400 only in anything but DIMM1

Right. So I guess I need the 1.2C BIOS. I hope to see better OC results with it, cause I'm stuck in ~235-240 FSB no matter the settings I tried.
The problem with DIMM1 is related to the TWINMOS 512MB DDR400 50D memory that I've got. It only works stable as DDR333 in DIMM1. It's crazy but it is true. Not only with K8N Neo PE, but with 2 NFORCE2 mainboards that I has as well

It is probably a Windows problem. If you turn off automatic reboot there is a good(?) chance you will get a blue-screen with some more or less informative numbers. Google that.

  • Does Cool N Quiet + AMD Chip Driver = Video Card Overclocking?

For some odd reason, my 9800NP is automatically changing its clock rates on me.  Never down, only up.  Does N Quiet and/or the AMD Chip Driver impact your video card?  Right now it booted at 378/330 which is a 9800Pro.  I'm using the normal BIOS for a NP, but it does show up as a pro in the Display properties.  Any ideas?

I think the Cool N Quiet software doen't like RadLinker/RadClocker.  I enabled Cool N Quiet in the BIOS, but did not install the associated software. All better now!!

  • Is Cool 'n Quiet stable?

    I run a K8N Neo2 Platinum (MS-7025) with 1.4 bios, 3800+ NewCastle CPU and Kingston HyperX 400MHz memory.
The setup works like a charm, but when I enable "Cool 'n Quiet" it seems to cause lock-ups and reboots.
The system is NOT overclocked, everything is set to AUTO in BIOS, except for memory which has been set to a bit slower settings than SPD reports.
When I have Core Center open on screen to watch what Cool 'n Quiet does, it seems like most of the time it reports 200MHz x 5.0 at idle, but when I start up an application, it can peak to 380MHz x 12 ?
Neither memory nor CPU should be able to handle that kind of FSB clock, so is it a system bug that the clock peaks at way above 200MHz?  I really don't DARE to use "Cool 'n Quiet" for that reason, I need a stable system that doesn't hang or reboot in the middle of working.
    Later,
    Anders.

    Andres,
I'm not getting the BSODs but the fluctuations do have me concerned. This thread is interesting. Blue screen caused by Vcore flucuations?
Raising the Vcore from 1.50 to 1.525 or 1.55 does seem to help stabilize my system but the CPU temp goes up. I've got a Thermalright XP-90 on the way so heat shouldn't be a problem.
    ===============================================
    What I've found so far...
Cool & Quiet disabled in the BIOS.
    Start CoreCenter running.
    Start Speedfan running.
    Start WCPUCLK
Put a full load on the CPU. (seti@home)
Just moving the mouse around causes a few alarming fluctuations seen in CoreCenter.
WCPUCLK doesn't register the fluctuations but I'm not getting BSODs.
    1) Open CC. Click on CoreCenter , the program title button.
    2) Click User
    3) Set the fans on high
    4) Click Apply.
Now the Vcore and FSB stabilize.
It appears that C & Q is turned off.
    ===============================================
It looks like what the other guys have been saying...Don't use CoreCenter except as a reference to help set up other programs like MBM and SpeedFan. Hmmm...RightMarks RM clock also sounds interesting.
Having a quieter system with Cool & Quiet turned on in the BIOS is nice. I'll have to do more testing to see if its stable. If C & Q is still causing instability after raising the CPU VID to 1.525 in the BIOS...I'll leave it off...Cie La Vie.

  • How to disable Cool N Quiet driver when it isnt in the bios or registry for Roxio game capture?

    1. HP G60-120 US Notebook PC
    2. Windows 7 32-bit
    3. No error messages
    4. No changes before issue occured.
I was told by Roxio (company of the capture card I bought to record gameplay on my Xbox) to call HP and get my Cool N Quiet driver disabled after I updated my other drivers and still had problems with my capture card. Can somebody tell me where to find it other than in the registry and bios because it is NOT in there and I have looked already more than 5 times or if you know where I can get it remotely disabled. HP cannot remotely disable it because I just talked to them and they don't have the power to do that.

No, Corecenter is almost useless and is NOT needed to "activate" Cool n Quiet.  The best it can do is tell you fan speed and temps, and even that is questionable.  It will also tell you clock speed but you can get that from right clicking "My Computer" choose Properties, go to General tab, note mhz displayed there.  If it is about half of full clock speed for your CPU, then CnQ is working right.  If it shows full clock speed, then CoolnQuiet is NOT working and you need to re-read Mr. Woo's original post which gives details about how to enable it.
Next, about fan speed.  You have to understand that CnQ does not have anything to do with fan speed directly. Unless you have fan speed control disabled in BIOS, then your fan is going to control as you described whether you have CnQ enabled or not. In BIOS, in the H/W Monitor section, there is a place to enable or disable fan speed control - it's called CPU Smart Temperature Monitor or something like that.
As long as it is enabled and your fan is compatible and hooked up right, the fan will ramp up and down to control temperature. This is independent of CnQ.  And it is independent of Corecenter.  Disable CnQ and shutdown CoreCenter, the mobo still controls fan speed.

  • K8N NEO2 cool and quiet problem

I noticed that when I enable cool and quiet, my CPU clock gets stuck at 1 GHz (5x multi), it will not go full speed even at max load. Does anyone have any ideas?

Default xp installation use processr.sys Microsoft signed as cpu driver .
With AMD installed cpu driver it updates to amdk8.sys Advanced Micro Devices signed .
As for why the driver states version 1.1.0.0 i wonder myself .
Think that the changes are in the inf/cat/installshield file ,thats what i think when looking at the revision history.
    Edit:
It is the file cpudriver.EXE which is 1.1.0.14 revision

  • Just cant get Cool'n'Quiet to work...

    Hi
I have my computer in the same room as my bed so at night Cool'n'Quiet would be awsome but the thing is I can't get it to work and I don't get why
    I have done this
    1. Enable Cool'n'Quiet in BIOS
    2. Installed AMD Athlon 64 processor driver (tried 2 versions v1.1.0.0 that was on the mobo driver cd and v1.2.2.0)
    3. In Power Options I have tried everything except for "Home/Office Desk" and "Always On" as it says in the Cool'n'Quiet faq
and it's still not working, what am i doing wrong or is it a broken mobo or maybe cpu?
I contacted msi about this and got this in reply
    Dear Customer,
Current bios will not fully support the Venice Core processors yet which the release bios will be done by end of June of 2005, thanks.
so for everyone that has the same problem, its not you and it will be fixxed

OK, this may be over simplified. Have you loaded core central and clicked on the "cool and quite" hyperlink? This is all I do and I can hear the fans slow down reducing noise. Even though I do not have cool and quite turned on in my BIOS settings. I am running a completely different setup than you, so this is not case and point. Just thought I'd mention it.
If I do that my fans slow down alot and I get a quiet computer but as its not clocking down as Cool'n'Quiet shuld do it gets to hot so I will wait for msi to release a new bios that fully supports Venice core cpus

  • Cool'n'Quiet: How can I be sure its working?

In Core Center, it always shows my cpu speed as 2000mhz.. Shouldnt it be 800 if its working?
I set the power management to Minimal Power Usage, I enabled Cool'n'Quiet in the bios and in Core Center. I installed the stuff from AMDs website..\
What am I missing? Ive never seen it idle at 800mhz. Although, I think the cpu fan speed adjust according to the temp. Help please.

What OS are you using. The Core Center proggy seems to need the AMD Driver which is for XP only. Core center works fine on mine too except the mode to drop the CPU to 800Mhz. I run Win2k Pro. But Core center does change the speed on my fans. However I get blue screens once in a while with CC so I ditched it as a broken proggy.

  • 1.9 bios, disable Cool n quiet = no boot.

    Hi Guys,
Recently flashed to 1.9 bios, which although seems to take longer to boot, has given me 1t timings and 400mhz ram speed with my San diego core, so on that side i'm happy and my pc seems to be running sweet.
However after tweaking my bios settings after flashing (disabling unused resources, tweak ram timings etc etc) i've noticed that if if DISABLE cool n quiet in the cell menu, when i try and boot up, I get to the windows logo screen and my comp just freezes. Only way to get out is to hit hold reset switch in.
If i go back in to cell menmu and enable cool n quiet in bios (changing nothing else at all) then I can boot up fine.
I haven't loaded to cool n quiet drivers and don't really want to use it, I haven't gone into windows power management and changed anything there either, so i just want to disable it in bios if i'm not using it.
    Any one have any ideas.

You could just leave it on auto and don't use any power saving schemes (choose always on) and don't load the AMD cpu driver .
Then CnQ should not be active .
Or you could flash to 1.A3 , it's supposedly being fixed there .

  • Cool'n'Quiet disabled on K9N2 Diamond (ms-7375) with Phenom II X4 940

I have a k9n2 Diamond with the 940 chip running ami v2.2 bios.  Among a host of quirks and in the face of MSI claiming that this board does not support the 940, I am unable to enable Cool'n'Quiet.  In the bios I can set it to Enabled but after saving and reentering the setting has returned to Disabled.  I have another motherboard which will support the 940 (i think) and a Sempron 3800+ Manila which the ms-7375 board will support but before I go to all the trouble of tearing two systems apart I thought I would ask if anyone else has had this problem and/or if anyone has any other suggestions.
thank you kindly for your attention.

Well flash to the latest BIOS 2.3 ==> http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1438

  • K8NGM2-FID Cool-n-Quiet Problem & Resume from S3 Standby

I all I have a new K8NGM2-FID. I've installed all latest available drivers/BIOS from MSI, nVidia, AMD, and Microsoft.
I have a stability problem with system when I enable Cool-n-Quiet via Power Options (Control Panel on WinXP Pro SP2). Minimal Power Management.  System is Dual Core Athlon64 4200+ with two 512MB DIMM (one is 333, and other is 400/333/266) Total 1GB RAM.  Have no PCI/PCI Express cards installed.  Once minial power options is enabled running apps begin to fail & generate Dr. Watson erros, and system will eventually BSOD.  Cool-n-quiet is enabled in BIOS.  Processor came out of another system with ATI Radeon 200 chipset, and Cool-n-Quiet was working fine there.
Also when I put systems in standby S3 mode, PATA IDE is not recognized (this is not main OS drive). But 36GB SATA WD Raptor drive works fine (this is main system drive).
    Ideas? Suggestions? Fixes?     ???

  • Basic stuff -- BIOS version, Cool 'n' Quiet working?

    Hi,
Okay, my new PC is up and running stable in WinXP Pro. Here are some very basic noob questions:
-How exactly do I determine my BIOS version? I thought I had v. 1.0 based on the loading screen during boot up, and SoftSandra, but MSI's Live Update says I have an equal or newer version than 1.2.
-How can I tell that Cool 'n Quiet is functioning properly? In Core Center, it appears that the CPU fan speed increases under load, but it doesn't happen right away so I'm not sure. Also, the CPU fan speed slider stays in the position I put it in manually, even after I switch back to Cool 'n Quiet (maybe this is just a GUI thing).
BTW -- I installed the Hyperion 4-in-1 drivers, enabled Cool 'n Quiet in the BIOS and set Windows power management to "minimal" -- is there anything else I need to do to enable Cool 'n Quiet functionality?
Also, should I just control the CPU fan manually through a drive bay fan controller instead of through Cool 'n Quiet?
    Thanks,
    -Ross

    Hi
Glad to see we are down to minor bits and bobs.
The bios version should be at top of first post screen. use pause if its passes to quick.
BUT, live update checks what version you have, if there is a newer version it will tell you. there is a 1.33 available from MSI, but not on live update yet.
There are various threads on C & Q, I don't use it, but some who do like it, others confused by it, you have obviously read the threads. So you know more than me !!
Hyperion 4 in 1 is the best driver, if C & Q is working for you I would leave it be, the fan will speed up or slow down on temp. That will take a few secs time lag as chip heats up, or cools down. As long as CPU temp stays within norms, I would think is is working normally.
    Enjoy it
    Jocko
