Which is better, Netgear N900 or Airport Extreme?

Which is better, Netgear N900 or Airport Extreme?

Gpcn,
I'm going to highly recommend the new Airport Extreme. I've been having all sorts of wifi and networking issues because of the saturated 2.4 GHz spectrum in my surrounding neighborhood.
I finally bit the bullet on friday night and purchased the Airport Extreme. I could not be happier!
I used to top out at around 8 Mbit/s download and 1 Mbit/s upload with my older Linksys setup. Now i'm getting 40+ Mbit/s and 2 Mbit/s respectively.
Not only that, but i'm no longer dropping my wifi with my devices (latops, iPads, iPhone, etc). It's very consistent and the speeds are amazing!
Sure it may be pricier than others, but it's worth every penny. The setup is very easy and you get Three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for connecting computers or network devices as well as built-in NAT support for security. You are better off getting the Airport Extreme.

  • IMac on Netgear X104 and Airport Extreme intermittently loses IP address

We have a Netgear X104 plugged into an Airport Extreme Base Station.
Another X104 (which carries network information through the household electrical wiring) is plugged in for a networked iMac with OS X v 10.5.4.
The network works flawlessly, but every few days, the iMac loses its IP address. All lights are working properly on the X104, indicating that it is seeing the network.
The only workaround on the iMac is to go to: System Preferences/Network/Advanced and click RENEW DHCP LEASE. The iMac then gets reassigned a new IP, such as 10.0.0.200 by the Airport Extreme.
The Airport Extreme, settings are as follows.
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
    Wireless security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Connect using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Address: Provided automatically
Powering off and on the Airport Extreme and the Cable Modem have not fixed this recurrent problem.

  • Netgear DG834G and Airport Extreme ?

I've done a few searches and I just need this confirmed ...
I've got a Netgear DG834G Wireless Modem router and an Airport Extreme and would like to get them talking to each other - which I thought I did last night ! - so i can have the ADSL connection in one room shared out over wireless to the AE connected to a G4 via one of it's ethernet ports ...
I have read that the Airport Express and a Netgear device is not compatible with Apple's WDS - does that apply to the Extreme as well ?
Is that correct as when I checked the log on the airport it had made a connection with the netgear but I couldn't for the life of me organise a proper network between them !
    Any suggestions appreciated...
I've been using the Airport for ages so not a real newbie... BUT... getting them to do what I want is proving an interesting project !
    Mitch

Personally I wouldn't go for a USB adaptor as they are pretty ropey at best. You can get Wireless to Ethernet bridges that join an existing wireless network and provide an ethernet connection. They don't require WDS support as they pretend to be a client on the wireless network. Netgear even do one (allthough as you probably guessed I'm not a keen Netgear supporter).
The other possibility is if it is a G4 desktop that has PCI slots a Broadcom based PCI wireless card will be automatically recognised as an Airport Extreme card by OSX and can be picked up cheap on eBay.

  • Cant connect to Netgear WPN824 with Airport Extreme Card

    Hi,
I have a Netgear wireless router. I can connect to the router without a problem when I hard wire it. When I go wireless the Mac doesnt even recogonize the router. I have no security right now, so I could try to connect the easiest. This is a brand new Airport extreme card that I installed tonight in my Imac g5. Using OS 10.4.10. Please help!!! Thanks!!!
I would think it would at least be able to recognize the network (which the name is being broadcasted). But it doesnt even show up.

Did you connect the antenna wire to the AirPort Extreme card?
Compare the antenna wire installation with the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card.

  • Is it possible to use NAS storage (which is wired via LAN to AirPort Extreme) as a Time Machine destination?

Is it possible to use NAS storage (WD My Cloud EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4) which is wired via LAN to current AirPort Extreme, as a Time Machine backup destination?
There are two reasons I came up with this question.
    - Connecting via Ethernet should be faster than USB 2.0 connection
    - 8TB NAS storages are slightly cheaper than 8TB USB HDD
If it is impossible, I am planning to buy My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB and wire it for MacBook Pro directly for the purpose of Time Machine backup.
I have a concern with my primal idea of backing up via WiFi, as I tend to handle big files when doing music production or movie editing. I wonder if this affect the performance of MacBook Pro, as it might take more time to complete each backup via WiFi.
Many thanks for your advice in advance,
    Masa
MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch (Mid 2012)

I would appreciate any advice which could include aother sollition of secure and practical backup.

  • Is anyone successfully using Netgear WN3000RP with Airport Extreme?

Got a brand new WN3000RP wifi range extender. I went through the installation several times myself and several times with tech support to no avail. Tech support told me to return it for a new one.
Everything is connected and the install process goes smoothly but I ultimately cannot ever use the extended network to connect to the Internet. I can see the range extender's mac address on the router but the two devices don't seem to talk to each other.
I'm just wondering if I'm going to have the same problem with a new one or not and wondering if it's even compatible with Airport Extreme routers.
I'm using Airport Utility version 6.1.
Can someone out there can let me know if they got this device working with their Airport Extreme?
Also, what are my other options to extend my range?

I know this answer is likely too late to help but it may help users in the future. In the situation where you are using a range extender there are a few things you need to confirm to make sure it is going to function properly and also some best practices to make sure your network is running smoothly.
    1. Is the range extender using the router for DHCP? I have found in my experience is that the router should "reserve" a MAC Address and IP for the the Range Extender. Most times it is 192.168.1.2. I would first set up the router to have the range extender have a set IP Address of 192.168.***.2 and add the MAC Address to the list so that the Range Extender has a Static IP Address in the private network.
    2. Initially set the range extender to have an SSID(Wireless Network Name) different than the Router's(Airport) SSID. This will allow you to determine if the Extender is functioning normally without it interfering with your existing network.
    3. At this point it is important to set the Range Extender DHCP. What this will do is let the range extender request IP Addresses, DNS(Domain Name Servers), and UPNP Requests. This is where I feel that a lot of people are having issues and assume that the router will still resolve DHCP. If the SSID and Wireless Channel are the same your network will work intermittently with internet access until it is configured correctly.
    4. For Devices that will stay on your network such as NAS(Network Storage), Smart TVs, Apple TVs I would recommend setting Static Private IP Addresses for each of them. Such as 192.168.1.3(NAS), 192.168.1.4(Apple TV), 192.168.5(Smart TV). Also if you enter the MAC Address for each device when you set this up it would be recommended.
    5. If devices are having issues connecting to internet or certain web services are having issues. It may be necessary to set the Extender(Which is now handling DHCP with IP, DNS, and UPNP passed through from the router) as the Gateway for which device may be having issues. For instance if the Apple TV is having issues communicating on the network(Air Play, Sharing, Streaming) set or configure the network settings manually on the Apple TV. The IP Address would be the one your reserved on your router. The Subnet Mask would likely be 255.255.255.0 by default unless you have changed the amount of potential "Hosts" on your network. The Gateway would be the IP Address of the Extender(Which is paired with your router). DNS servers should be handled automatically. In some situations with certain devices you may need to use a DNS Service for Streaming, but this generally isn't needed.
    A Visual Representation would be
ISP>Modem if needed>Router(DHCP Enabled and MAC Addresses Reserved)>Localized Devices<Range Extender(DHCP Enabled and Static IP Address 192.168.***.***)<Apple TV(Manually Configured IP Settings and Range Extender set as Gateway)<Other Devices Localized to Range Extender but not in range of Router(AirPort).
In this representation you should be able to have the router and range extender broadcast Identical SSID and Channels(Radio Frequency). This also allows for advanced settings to be put in place such as LAN networks or Subnets.
An issue that may come up is communicating with the range extender or router while setting up the network. A simple workaround that will allow you to configure either if the network doesn't let you connect on a MacBook is to go to System Preferences>Network>Wifi or Ethernet>Advanced>TCP/IP in configure IPv4>Set Using DHCP with Manual Address> Then IP Address that corresponds with your current network 192.168.***.*** but is not the same as the gateway, router, or reserved devices. This will allow you to connect and configure devices even if router or extender is not assigning IP addresses or operating properly.

  • Netgear ReadyNAS and Airport Extreme

Hi, I just got my Airport Extreme up and running and very happy with wireless connection so far.
I have a problem - I can't seem to get access to my Netgear NAS attached by network cable to the AE base station. I can't even seem to find it on Finder. Got my whole life on the NAS now I can't access it!
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
    Regards,
    Terence

Does that work the other way? I have a 'Bell' wireless router that creates my home wireless network. I'm trying to use my Airport Extreme to 'extend' my wireless network into the basement, and plugging my desktop Mac comp. into that with Ethernet.
Are there lots of complications when trying to use an Extreme with other router brands?

  • Better N performance on Airport Extreme

I just bought an Airport Extreme dual band to use with my Windows machines. Through a post on another forum on here, I found out my N connections are actually using the 2.4ghz band and not the 5ghz band.
I have a Zxyel wireless N card in the one desktop, and the stock N card in an Acer laptop. Do I have to upgrade these in order to get on the 5ghz portion? I have one machine that is still on G, and I'd prefer not to share bandwidth with it if at all possible.
Just trying to tweak this new router as much as possible for best performance. It is already hands down faster than the Belkin router it replaced.

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you setup your AirPort Extreme using the step by step guide in AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme (AEBS) has been configured to use the same wireless network name with both the 2.4 GHZ network and 5 GHz network.
Your computer(s) will normally log onto the strongest signal that they see and if this is coming from the 2.4 GHz network, that is where they will connect.
You have the option of giving the 5 GHz network a separate name. If you do this, you can direct your computers to log onto that network (assuming they can handle a 5 GHz signal. Sorry, I can't tell you whether your Windows machines will be able to do this or not. Might be worth a try to find out, though.
To assign a different name to the 5 GHz network:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Click the Wireless Network Options button
Put a check mark in the box next to 5 GHz Name. AirPort Utility will automatically add (5 GHZ) to the name of your current network
    Click Done
    Click Update
Now try to have your computer(s) locate and log onto the network with the (5 GHz) name. Be advised that 5 GHz signals do not penetrate or travel as well as 2.4 GHz signals due to their higher frequencies, so you will probably find that 5 GHz may be close to a line-of-sight deal.

  • Which drives can power off on Airport Extreme?

Is there a list of external drives that are verified to be able to power down when used with airport extreme.

What do you mean? The AEBSn will NOT power down ANY USB disk connected to it. That is the expected behavior.
If a disk goes to sleep by itself, it will not be recognized again by the AEBSn until the station is power cycled or rebooted.

  • Netgear faster then Airport Extreme?

I have a 10MB internet connection via a cable modem.
I plug the cable modem into my Netgear Rangemax cable router - Speedtest.net shows I am getting 9.7MB downloads - which is what I expect.
I do exactly the same test (from the same distance etc) with my AEBS, and only achieve around 2MB download?
    Why is this??
I do everything the same when connecting - switch everything off, power up the modem, then power up the router, then power up my MBP. Both are at the same distance from my MBP - literally 2 feet away. Yet the Netgear gives me my full speed and the AEBS does not??
My current connection to the AE shows the following:
    PHY mode: 802.11n
    Channel 36 (5GHz)
    Security: WPA2 Personal
    RSSI: -53
Transmit Rate: 108 (sometimes this goes up to 300, even though my MBP hasnt moved?)
    MCS Index: 15
Why isnt my AEBS giving me my full speed??
It is running the latest 7.4.2 update etc.

Hmmmm, not sure what to make of this!
I entered Airport Utility to double check all settings etc. I didnt change a single setting - I exit the utility and didnt save anything etc.
I ran another speedtest, and as I turned around to grab an ethernet cable to test via ethernet, my speed has shot up to normal - around the 9.5MB mark download!
Im not sure what has caused this - but things seem to be Ok for the moment!!
Any ideas what could have caused this dip in speed?
Pretty sure its not my ISP as it worked fine when I plugged my Netgear back in!

  • Which is better ipod touch or airport express?

    hi,
I'm running itunes from my mac through a standard home hifi unit but want to upgrade my speakers. I'm thinking of buying a set of zeppelin speakers (http://www.bowers-wilkins.co.uk/display.aspx?infid=2466) but as I dont have an ipod was wondering whether to stream music from my mac using airport express or buy an ipod touch.
Does anyone know if the sound quality is affected using the airport express?
    cheers

    Hi deggie,
Congratulations for your purchase of Zeppelin, which is a great speaker for iPod and I am going to buy it once it is available in Hong Kong. (I heard it once it a shop in Hong Kong).
B&W is a great speaker company - with no doubt.
Does Zeppelin has also an optical input as well?
My only comments (with my iPod HiFi with airport express) - occasionally the signal did not come too smoothly from my airport express to the iPod HiFi - a kind of influence from other electronic wave e.g. mircowave?

  • Are there any new HP Printers which will work on the new Airport Extreme?

Has anyone had luck connecting an HP printer to the new 802.11N network? We have an older one which will not connect. THANKS!

My Laserjet 1300 does not work over USB and the Gigabit 802.11 AE base. There seems to be something wrong with Laserjets and USB hookups.
We're not getting answers from anybody. Could someone from Apple please investigate this and give us an answer?

  • Airport extreme 5.8 ghz with a netgear router at 2.4 ghz?

We will be getting a new imac which I would like to run wirelessly as part of a home system with two other ethernet connected macs and a wireless PC laptop. We expect to get substantial interference and would like to get the airport extreme and run it at 5.8 ghz to avoid home problems. Our current netgear, which works fine with the laptop, runs on the 2.4 spectrum. Is it possible to connect the netgear to the airport extreme and continue to use the wireless part of the netgear router/switch for the pc laptop (and avoid purchase of a new wireless card).. and have the imac at the 802.11n speed and the higher bandwidth because of the extreme router? Hope I explained this correctly. thanks.

bkenney1, Welcome to the discussion area!
Yes it is possible to operate the Netgear at 2.4 GHz while operating the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) at 5 GHz.
This is a 'dual band' network. It is discussed in the Apple documentation and in several threads in this area.
