Which is better, Raid 0 with two hdds or 1 ssd?

Hi,
I have a macbook pro Mid 2010 with two open hard drive bays (thanks to the mce optibay.) I was wondering if it would be better to put two caviar black hard drives in raid 0 on my macbook pro, or have one vertex 2 drive as a boot/applications drive and another data drive.
Thanks
Sam

I understood what the hard-drive-in-optibay meant.  Regardless, it's still two platter-based hard drives versus an SSD.  An SSD will be faster in your situation.  If you had a lot of platter-drives in RAID0 and you had some sort of hardware based RAID controller with battery-backed cache, then maybe, possible, potentially, that (really expensive) platter-based RAID0 could be as fast as a SSD.  You don't have that and can't put that in a notebook, so it ain't gonna happen for you.
Now add to the mix, the fact that RAID0 will lose data if any one of the drives in the array fails.  You have two drives in RAID0 versus one drive in a non-RAID.  The RAID is twice as likely to have a drive failure just because you have more drives.  If you made the RAID from two SSD drives, which are more reliable than platter-based drives, then you're got something interesting.  But you're still twice as likely to have a SSD-RAID0 array failure compared to a single non-RAID SSD.  (And more than twice if it's platter-based drives in the RAID0 versus a single non-RAID SSD.)  So it's up to you to determing how much risk you are willing to take...and how much you can afford.
Also note that some Macbook and Macbook Pro models have slower performance on the SATA port for the optical drive.  (One assumes Apple tried to save a few dollars and put in a older, slower SATA controller for the optical drive.)  I don't know exactly which models but if yours is one of those, then you may get uneven performance on your RAID0.  Whether that is noticable or acceptable to you, will depend on a lot of things that you won't  know until you try.  (e.g.: model of drive, apps you're using.)
And it's good that "backup is easy for you."  With RAID0 for the boot volume, you're that much more likely to have a failed boot volume.  (IOW, can't boot the Mac at all, which means you'll be using that easily made backup a lot. )  Ideally, workstations that used RAID0 used them for the data, not for the OS.  For example, in video editing, the scratch disk needs to be fast, but could be RAID0 because you "threw away" whatever was on the scratch disk after you were done editing, and presumably saved/copied the final edited product to another archival drive.  But the OS was on a typical single drive non-RAID (or a RAID1 or RAID5 if necessary,) not on a single RAID0 array for both OS and data.
In your situation, you can't separate the OS and data onto separate RAID arrays, so in general, RAID0 is NOT what you want, regardless of whether you use SSDs or platter-based hard drives.  But again, only you can determine how much risk and cost you're willing to gamble with.

  • Dual boot with Two HDDs using GRUB?

I thought I understood GRUB but this has got me puzzled.
    If I have two HDDs:
    hd0 = XP
    hd1,0 = Vista
hd1,1 = Arch (I installed GRUB to this partition as well)
and I want to use NTLDR to chainload GRUB, how do I do it if NTLDR is on (hd0,0)?
On a normal (single HDD) dual boot setup it is quite easy: install the GRUB files to (hd0,1), dd the first 512 bytes in /dev/hda2 and copy it to hda1, then edit the boot.ini file in hda1 to load the dd image saved there.
However, when NTLDR is on (hd0,0) and the GRUB stage1.5 and stage2 files are on (hd1,1) how can I achieve a dual boot system using NTLDR to chainload GRUB?  Can GRUB stage1 load from (hd0,0) and look for stage1.5/stage2 on a completely separate hard drive (hd1,1)?  Or can't it be done?
As I said, it's got me beat.  Has anyone achieved this?

    See this for details.
I don't think so -- the use of a bind mount means that the kernel image can go in the standard location, that's the whole point of it.
@OP: Yes, just make sure to call the path to the respective kernel images relative to $ESP

  • RAID with two USB drives?

I just bought two USB drives (2 x WD 3 TB MyBook Essential) and tried to set them up as mirrored RAID on my Mac Mini (Mid 2010 model, OS X 10.7) using Disk Utility. It lets me do all the configuration (pick disks, etc.) but when I hit create, I get the following error:
POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted.
Is there any way to solve this / explanation why this happens?

Here is an app that should do what you are looking for.
    http://qgf.in/BBRBMh
that will take you to a shareware page at apple.com. The software lets you compare two different drives and select which way you want the changes to go.
It is shareware so you should be able to try it out before you buy it. Make sure it does what you want.
Another option is Chronosync http://qgf.in/PLfpeu . It is a little pricey, but it works well.

  • Which is better bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology and edr wireless technology ? which is better between the two ?

i saw in the tech specs that macbook air has "bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology" while macbook pro has "bluetooth 2.1 + edr wireless technology". what's the difference ? and which one is better ?

Bluetooth 4.0 is the later standard. You can read up on it here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_v4.0
Whether Bluetooth 4.0 is "better" than the earlier version depends entirely on the Bluetooth peripheral you wish to use, but in general, the later version is more desirable since it included all of the older versions' capabilities and adds some new ones. If the peripheral doesn't take advantage of those new capabilities, though, then it won't matter.

  • Backup Assistant - (1 account, 4 phones of which 2 are smartphones with two backup assistants)

My husband and I each have a smart phone on one account.  I have backup assistant and he has backup assistant.  When I log into the verizon account online and click on the menu bar above 'My Services' then Back up assistant, it only shows my husband's backup assistant as his phone is the primary number on the account.  Now, I have backup assistant and have sync'd my information and it has gone through successfully.  Why can I not see my backup assistant contacts on the website?  Why isn't there an option to select my different phone number (which is not the primary one) and see my backup assistant contacts?    What if we wanted to sync all 4 of the phones on our account and wanted to see each backup assistant listing for each?
Please advise if there is a setting I may be missing or if this feature is/isn't available yet and if not, when will this be available as this is a necessary and required function for each phone number to see their backup listing under backup assistant.
    Thank you,

You'll need to delete the Backup assistant app from the phone, and then reinstall it as a new copy with the phone activated with HIS number; then it will restore or sync back HIS contacts.  (If all goes as it shouls; as budone said earlier in this thread, Backup Assistant has been having problems for weeks, if not months, and it may not work as it should.

  • Setting up Dual Boot on a laptop with an HDD and an SSD?

    Hello,
I've had a Lenovo Y500 laptop for about a year now, and I'd really like to run Arch on it. I've been using Arch on a virtual machine for a while now, and I have tried other distros like Gentoo and Slackware, but Arch is by far my favorite. I find myself spending most of my time on Arch with only 1GB RAM and 32GB hard disk space allocated, when I could be on my 8GB RAM Windows machine.
The laptop has a 1TB HDD which is split into two partitions, a 883GB C: drive(entitled Windows OS) and a 25GB D: drive (entitled Lenovo), and a 16GB SSD which I imagine is for cache. I think I would like to allocate 256GB for Arch, since I really don't need much space to run Arch.
Obviously I have to set up another partition, but I really don't know how to do that, especially without screwing up my HDD and SSD configuration.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks a lot

    Ensure you have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Partitioning
Gparted worked very well for me several years ago when I re-sized the (gack!) Vista partition that came on this laptop to make room for a real OS.  I had no problems -- be advised that this is a BIOS machine.  Be sure you back up anything important to you before you start.

  • Disk utility Q: setting up RAID with 2 firewire drives

    Hi,
I tried setting up a redundant RAID with two LaCie 250gb firewire drives in Apple's Disk Utility. All was OK until I restarted. The RAID didn't show up, and both disks came up as unreadable. I was unable to reformat, erase, repair, or partition either of the LaCie drives. I tried new cables and both the front and rear Firewire ports. No matter what I did, I got an input/output error.
I was able to erase and reformat one of the drives on my powerbook running 4.6. The other drive appears to be DOA, as it clicks and blinks and does little else.
So what gives? I'm going to exchange the dead drive, but I don't want to have the same problem with setting up a RAID if the same nonsense is going to happen again. Any thoughts?

FW RAID on G5s is PITA and very poor performance. You would also need a PCI FW800 controller to get a boost or anything like normal. If you want any type of RAID, invest in Serial ATA drive/case/controller.
SeriTek if you want it to be bootable. SeriTek or Sonnet for direct connect. Sonnet if you think you might need more than 4 drives and use Port Multiplier.
There is only one FW channel that has to be shared if you don't invest in one or more FW800 controllers.
My bet is the drive could be fine but needs to be zeroed and could have damaged boot blocks at this point.
I am not a fan of mirrors. Backups, yes, lots. Stripped for scratch and even a dedicated boot OS/apps, yes. I've run with Disk Utility and SoftRAID (3.5) for 4 yrs now but mostly SCSI and one FW800 RAID which only gets about 75-80MB/sec. Even a single drive gets near 60MB/sec and a mirror would cut that in half.

  • How to change startup disk for a 2012 Mac mini with dual HDD and clean installed with Windows 8.1?

    Hi,
I have a Mac-mini (late 2012 model), originally with Mac OS X Maverick Server installed (with two HDD). Recently, I had clean installed Windows 8.1 on one of the HDD (worked perfectly, just slow) and swapped the other HDD (with Mac OSX) with a SSD. I then cloned the Windows OS HDD in to the new SSD. Now I am trying to boot this Mac mini from this SSD, however, since this Mac mini do not have BIOS for me to change the boot sequence at the startup, is there any one can help?
    Thank you,

    Also:

After Windows is installed, you can switch between OS X and Windows. Use the Startup Disk preference pane in OS X, or the Boot Camp system tray item in Windows to select your startup disk, then restart your computer

As far as I know something like this is not possible.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

  • T430 with two 500 GB HDD : RAID ?

    Hi people,
My question is on the title :
Given a T430 with a 500 GB primary disk and an additional 500 GB instead of the optical drive, is it possible to configure the BIOS to set a RAID 0 or RAID 1 mode between these two HDD ?
    Thanks.

JDAY has it right.  You really want an SSD for your boot and programs disk and a hard drive of whatever size you like as the data drive.  RAID is old technology and for performance is obsolete.
