Which is better Truphone or Fring? Neither? Opinions wanted

My husband and I travel overseas periodically. We like to stay in touch with adult kids, one of who has an iPhone. Not a lot of talking, just periodic sort of "we're here, all is well. How are you?"
It looks as if some sort of voip plan would save a lot of money over at&t's international rates. I have been looking at Truphone and Fring. Is one better than the other? Do they do sms? Pros? Cons? Suggestions?
All comments/advice appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Fring works OK. Keep in mind that it will only work over WiFi, so you need to find a hotspot first. If you can find a hotspot though, you can send an email.
If you want to do VOIP, then you need a VOIP account/server that you can access. You can't just fire up Fring or some other app and magically do VOIP. Fring can connect to Skype, so if you set up Skype on a PC (free) and fund it for VOIP calls, that will cover you for very cheap - but again you need a hotspot.
McDonalds in London had free Wifi as does any Apple store. VOIP over WiFi has latency and jitter. To the point where I just wound up sending emails to my wife.

  • In your guys' opinions, which is better? iPhone 5c or iPhone 5s?

In your guys' opinions, which is better? iPhone 5c or iPhone 5s?

Definitely iPhone 5s, as it has the new A7 chip while the iPhone 5c is the same as iPhone 5 with just a fancy case. Well apart from that there is no much big difference, however the iPhone 5c is much cheaper if your looking at it price wise. So depending on what you want.

  • Which is better to use: BEx query or Web Application as an iView in portal?

    Hi gurus!
Are there any experienced opinions, which is better - publish a BEx query in portal or publish a BEx Web Application in portal? Is it easier to alter the layout attributes etc. if I create a BEx Web Application first before publishing?
What is the way of fixing for example filter item height if I publish BEx query in portal - is there a Web Application that it uses anyhow which I can fix? Or can I use in that case iView -properties in portal?
    Thankful for advice

ok, means i can use jsp:useBean tag for all my
classes that are not actually bean. so it will be
instantiated at run time and provide efficiency .No. Jsp:useBean is used for java bean components.
    >
but when should i use import statement in my jsp and
it happen at translation time so will it create any
type of burden for my code if i import multiple
classes. For non-java beans, you need to import the classes, period.
    It's not a burden, it's a necessity.

  • Hughes net vs Wildblue which is better.

I am considering Satellite internet service.  I live in a rural location where this is the only thing other than dial-up.  Which is better Hughes net or Wildblue?  Second, I need to be able to monitor my dog (live) from a remote location.  What camera would service this best using a satellite internet connection with stated upload speed of 128k.

Neither. They both cap your bandwidth each day

  • Which is better to sync, wifi or iCloud?

I heard that you shouldn't sync with itunes and icloud.  Which is better, and how do you set that up?

Where did you hear you shouldn't use these?
You're comparing apples and oranges. Wifi sync is a way to wirelessly sync with iTunes on your Mac or PC. This includes content that you've purchased, content that you've ripped from your own CD collection, as well as things like playlists, song ratings, etc. This is just to replace plugging in your USB cable as you've always had to do in the past.
iCloud is a way to store some of your content on Apple's servers and retrieve it on any iCloud enabled device. Note this includes only content you've purchased (music, movies, tv shows) or content you've created using iCloud-enabled apps like Pages, Numbers, or Keynote. iCloud doesn't let you sync "metadata" such as playlists, song ratings, etc. if you add a song to a playlist on your iPhone, it won't show up on that same playlist on your iPad, Mac, or PC because you use iCloud. It only gets moved on those other devices after you sync. iCloud also provides a means to keep calendars, contacts, notes, and reminders the same across multiple devices. Finally, iCloud let's you backup your device to the cloud instead of to your Mac or PC, which is handy feature as you don't have to worry about losing your backup should your Mac or PC fail.
You can choose to use iCloud and not wifi sync, or use wifi sync and not iCloud, or use both or use neither. They are independent of one another and provide different functions.
Personally, I use both. I wirelessly sync so my iDevices are up to date, and I take advantage of iCloud for my backups, calendar, contacts, etc.

  • Which is better, FCS or CS4?

Im going to start making videos...
so, i would like your opinions on which is better, Final Cut Studio 3 or Creative Suite 4?
it would be better if the apps:
    1. have templates
    2. are easy to use (for beginners)
    btw,
If CS4, I know that I'll get Photoshop.
But, FCS 3, does it has any Photoshop equivalents?
    Soundbooth=CS4
    Soundtrack Pro=FCS 3
    Which is better?

If you are beginning, why don't you start with iMovie? It's already on your Mac and you can get an idea of what video editing is like. Both Final Cut Studio and Adobe CS5 have a high learning curve, and I wouldn't consider putting either one of them on a 13" laptop.
I really encourage you to consider your requirements & what kind of video you anticipate doing (home movies or are you planning to do commercials for Nike?). What level of experience do you currently have?

  • Which is better for solving Mac G5 issues

I have been experiencing Kernel Panics and program crashes. I want something that is good for testing hardware and OS issues. Can either of these find corrupted data files? I am looking at two utilities for purchase. Which is better for solving Mac Issues?
    TechTool Pro
    or
    Disk Warrior?

Hi! Both and neither. Diskwarrior is the undisputed king of disk drive directory repair (which is the leading cause of drive problems)but that's all it does. TTP does directory repair although not as good as DW but TTP has a hardware test suite to test the components and can test a disk for bad blocks. I recommend both although you'll find yourself using DW the most. If you bought your machine new you should have a hardware test disk. It could be a separate disk or on one of the restore disks. As for your KP's start by disconnecting everything except the keyboard and mouse. Ram is also a likely culprit as can be a video card. The console log file will often give you a hint of the offending item. DR SMOKES article on KP's will also help. Tom

  • Garbled audio using VoIP apps Truphone and Fring

I am getting garbled feedback at times using Truphone and Fring on an iPod touch 2G v2.2.
This happens when calling GoogleTalk or when calling the Truphone or Fring Test Call. The garbled feedback starts immediately before the connection is complete. I have worked with Truphone support and they think it is an iPod touch issue.
When this problem occurs, a GoogleTalk user answers and can hear me fine but I can't hear them. This appears to be an issue on my end only. Often, I have to try several times before I get a good connection. When I am able to connect to GoogleTalk or the Test Call without the feedback, it sounds fine.
I tried this at the Apple Store and got the same garbled feedback. They replaced my Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic but it didn't help. They ran Diagnostics but didn't find anything. Since this seems to only happen with Truphone and Fring, and not iRecorder, Apple thinks this is app and not hardware related so they will not replace my iPod touch. They suggested that I write up an description of the trouble I am having at apple.com/feedback which I did.
There are others complaining about this exact same problem on other forums.
I am trying to determine if a certain build series is having this problem. If you check the first five digits from the left of your Serial Number under Settings->General->About, the first two digits may be the location, the next single digit will be the year, and the next two will be week. Mine is 1A838.

I noticed this happens with Skype and my iPod Touch 2G with the Apple in-ear buds with remote + mic.
    What happens:
    1) I make a call with skype out
    2) I hear the skype "boo-bee-boop" sound.
3a) I hear ringing. If I do not hear any sound from my mic. this means the call will be ok.
3b) I also hear ringing as well as the sound coming from my mic, all garbled/metallic. If someone picks up on the other end they can hear me fine, but I can't hear them, only my own voice all garbled. I also tested this with my own phone.
Usually when I hear the garbled mic sound after dialing, i press to cancel the call, but it still rings on the receiver end, so it's annoying for the people I'm trying to call. Sometimes it takes 3 tries to get a "good" call. I've tried things like quitting the app before making the call, but nothing seems to guarantee a "good" call, so it's like a game of russian roulette (with lower stakes
I think i may have found a fix, turning "hold" on and off right after connecting seems to work all the times i've tried.
I should note, this applies to the skype app, as I've found the call quality on fring and nimbuzz to be unbearable, due to the delay.
Now, I think it's related to the OS, since another app I own, FourTrack, has the EXACT SAME garbled sound with the mic, every time I try to record. It worked fine before OS 2.2, The FourTrack developers have acknowledged the problem with iPod Touch, and say that the next OS update should fix it. I am 90% sure its a software issue with "real-time" apps, because i've recorded many voice memos with the mic in various apps and i've never heard the garbled sound.
Anyway, please let me know if the hold trick works for Skype people. Other than this, it's an amazing app and I'm very happy with it.

  • Which is better for performance Azure SQL Database or SQL Server in Azure VM?

    Hi,
We are building an ASP.NET app that will be running on Microsoft Cloud which I think is the new name for Windows Azure. We're expecting this app to have many simultaneous users and want to make sure that we provide excellent performance to end users.
    Here are our main concerns/desires:
Performance is paramount. Fast response times are very very important
We want to have as little to do with platform maintenance as possible e.g. managing OS or SQL Server updates, etc.
We are trying to use "out-of-the-box" standard features.
With that said, which option would give us the best possible database performance: a SQL Server instance running in a VM on Azure or SQL Server Database as a fully managed service?
    Thanks, Sam

    hello,
SQL Database using shared resources on the Microsft data centre. Microsoft balance the resource usage of SQL Database so that no one application continuously dominates any resource. You can try the
    Premium Preview
for Windows Azure SQL Database which offers better performance by guaranteeing a fixed amount of dedicated resources for a database.
If you using SQL Server instance running in a VM, you control the operating system and database configuration. And the
performance of the database depends on many factors such as the size of a virtual machine, and the configuration of the data disks.

  • Which is better??????

which is better?Dam really confused which speaker to buy??
i currently have a creative m2600.but am not getting enough performance or that feel while watching movies like avatar, step up 3 etc......so am planning to buy a 5.1.......not planning but i have decided to buy a 5.1....so..
which is better? the 6160 or 6060 or 6100.
which of these will provide me relly great exprience while playing games and most importantly while whatching hd movies and while listening to music.......
and other than this what i have to ask is...what is this "db" in speakers. i mean while looking at a speaker specs we can see it..like 65db,85db,75db..etc........
and when i compared specs of the three speakers i mentioned above i saw that the 6160 has low "db"........why is that?

The specs is just a guide, you won't be able to tell the slight difference in db using just your ears. Besides, it is just a comparison between the level of a music to the level of background noise, it does not necessary mean which speaker sounds better. If possible, please make a trip to your local electronics store and try out the speakers system yourself.

Which is better software for brochures and PDF forms ? Photoshop or InDesign ? and why ?

If you are going to be making a lot of brochures, with photos, you probably want both. Photoshop to edit the photos, and InDesign to assemble and layout images with text.

  • Which is better an android or apple

Which is better getting an android smart phone or an Apple I Phone?

As the poster Horses 547 said its a matter of personal preference. However I own and use both. Printing via air print is smooth and easy on an iphone. Printing on a android phone is iffy and tedious and you will have to find an app to print since there is no native app to do so. I purchased http://www.printhand.com which costs around $12 from the app store. but it is in my opinion the best printing app out there for android. I use it on my android tablet as well and its great. This company is the maker of the print app on iphones.
The iphone is a little harder to put your own ringtone on the device. However very easy from the Itunes you put on your computer and hook into.
Another thing an iphone does is if you use their cloud service or pay for a song it is available on all your ios devices. Iphone, ipad, or ipod or up to five computers registered through itunes on those computers.
Google play music also can sync with all your android devices.
Iphone don't have external Micro SD card slots, so the storage on the phone is all you have.
Iphones use imessage which does not count against your text allotment  to another iphone or ipad user. it send regular text to non iphone users.
Another thing is Face Time but I found a better program called oovoo at http://www.oovoo.com or in the Google Play Store for free.
Iphones are paper thin but I have an android that has a larger view area and is also paper thin and light. Depending on the android phone it may have a removable battery, whereas iphones are sealed as are some new androids. I have found the sound for music better on my iphone, and videos are crystal clear. Again on some better androids the music and video is comparable .
There is really not many differences but it up to the user.
One last good thing is iphones are updated via Apple, no long waits for OS updates like is done with Android devices, and android devices on Verizon.

    like the GUI much
    more than other versions...
