Which Is Quicker To Import - DV or AVCHD?
Hi. I was wondering if someone knew the answer to this question:
Which format is quicker to import from into iMovie '08: DV (stored on tape) or AVCHD (stored on SD cards)? Do both formats need converting before they can be edited in iMovie 08?
Thanks
Thanks for your reply.
I guess it makes sense that DV imports in real-time. It certainly isn't going to import a 60 minute tape any quicker than the 60 minutes it takes to play in real-time. But is there no further conversion required after that?
These SD based camcorders could potentially be faster to import from, since they don't have tapes that need to be played. But what's the answer? Can you import 60 minutes of AVHCD footage into iMovie 08 in under an hour?

How can I import or download AVCHD files on a memory card to FCE?
How can I import or download AVCHD files on a memory card to FCE?
What camera is this from? Make sure it is actual AVCHD and not some variant such as AVCHD Lite which is not supported.
Also, try this: In the Log and Transfer Pane, click on the Gear icon do set the preferences and set the Import
Preferences > AVCHD Plugin > AC3 Audio to Plain Stereo.
You can also download a trial version of Clipwrap and see if by converting the files to AIC with that software, then importing the files to FCE you have better luck.

Import 1080 60p AVCHD to iMovie!
The latest iMovie`11 (version 9.0.4) will not import 1080 60p AVCHD 2 videos directly from my Sony NEX-5N camera. The easy workaround is to copy the video files to the hard drive (best done with BootCamp Sony Picture Motion Browser) and then rewrap the 1080 60p (.mts and .m2ts) videos into QuickTime (.mov) movies, using either ClipWrap or Media Converter. Rewrapping AVCHD 2 video also avoids the time-consuming transcoding into Apple Intermediate Codec, which can quadruple the video file size and cause slight IQ loss.
I did some tests, trying to decide between ClipWrap and Media Converter with AVCHD Plugin:
- iMovie`11 will import, display, and render ClipWrap and Media Converter rewrapped videos without problem.
- During importing, iMovie`11 will transcode ClipWrap videos even if the "Optimize video" is unchecked unless a Hidden Function is activated in the Terminal, on the other hand, iMovie won't transcode Media Converter files if the "Optimize video" is unchecked.
- ClipWrap and Media Converter rewrapped videos appear pretty much identical to the source; HOWEVER...
- Export using QuickTime to Apple Intermediate Codec: ClipWrap file produces a more contrasty image with shadow areas appear less blotchy than Media Converter.
- Export using QT to H.264: ClipWrap file also produces a more contrasty image with shadow areas appear noticeably less blotchy than Media Converter.
Somehow ClipWrap rewrapping method makes a noticeable difference in the export qualities so I'll be using ClipWrap instead of the Media Converter!
To export edited 1080 60p videos from iMovie, go to "Share / Export using QuickTime... / Options / Video" and make sure "Size / Dimensions" is set to 1920X1080 and "Settings / Frame Rate" is set to 59.94. Despite the fact that iMovie`11 "File / Project Properties..." show "30fps - NTSC", 1080 60p video can be exported and will play smoothly on Macs fast enough to handle the format.
Here are some samples showing the differences in export image qualities.Hi jonpais,
The best codec is Apple ProRes for FCP. Due to the difference in the compresstion standard of AVCHD and ProRes 422, the converted files are significantly larger than the original ones. If you prefer smaller file size, please choose “Apple ProRes 422 (LT) (*.mov)” instead.
ProRes 422 (HQ): offers the utmost possible quality for 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 sources and provides target data rate of approximately 220 Mbps and higher quality than Apple ProRes 422;
ProRes 422: provides target data rate of approximately 145 Mbps and higher quality than Apple ProRes 422 (LT);
ProRes 422 (LT): provides roughly 70 percent of the data rate of Apple ProRes 422 (thus, smaller file sizes than Apple ProRes 422) and higher quality than ProRes 422 (Proxy);
ProRes 422 (Proxy): provides roughly 30 percent of the data rate of Apple ProRes 422 and high-quality offline editing at the original frame size, frame rate, and aspect ratio;
ProRes 4444: offers the utmost possible quality for 4:4:4 sources and roughly 50 percent higher than the data rate of Apple ProRes 422 (HQ).
If you want to know more, there is a prores link, maybehelp you: http://mts-to-aic-converter.com/transcode-sony-cx360v-1080-50p-60p-mts-to-prores -422-hq-for-final-cut-pro-on-mac/

Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive. -
Which swf can be imported to stage?
what are the restrictions as to which swf file can be
imported to the
library.
I am asking because sone swf would not get imported. In sense
that when
importing them nothing happens. Now error is issued and
nothing get importedI spotted it, thanks. I was unchecked, yet the swf would not
import.
Actually I noticed this problem while ago and posted a query
here, but
no-one reply. That time I did some experiments and it seemed
that swf which
were made by importing graphics and placing it on stage were
OK to import.
The swf where the graphic was placed into the library and
then used
dynamically with attachMovie(), work fine on its own, but
would not get
imported.
PS. For the moment I do not know the FLASH classed and I am
reluctant to
Load at a runtime because for ceratin resons I need the

application be encapsulated in a single Windows exe
projector. Anyway,
before considering other ways I need to know what is wron

Ldap schema extension to control which users / group are imported
Hello,
would like to have your opinion:
would it be a good idea to implement ldap schema extensions to control
which users / group are imported and controlled from ldap in a ldap
mastered installation?
e.g. we could implement the following schema extension for users:
attributetype ( 1.3.6.1.4.1.<iana-org-id>.1.1 NAME ( 'BogusisBeehiveUser' )
DESC ''
EQUALITY booleanMatch
SYNTAX 1.3.6.1.4.1.1466.115.121.1.7
SINGLE-VALUE )
# BogusinetOrgPerson
# The BogusinetOrgPerson is derived from inetOrgPerson
objectclass ( 1.3.6.1.4.1.<iana-org-id>.1
NAME 'BogusinetOrgPerson'
DESC 'RFC2798: Internet Organizational Person, plus Bogus Extensions'
SUP inetOrgPerson
STRUCTURAL
MAY (
BogusisBeehiveUser )
Then we could control the inclusion in beehive by simply switching
BogusisBeehiveUser on or off.sure; that's pretty much what is talked about in the Install Guide for LDAP Integration under the "inclusion and exclusion" section, about here:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14897_01/bh.100/e14830/ldap.htm#CHDEFFJF
that doesn't go into the specifics of how you might want to design your objectClass schemas, though, as beehive is agnostic to that.
If you don't want to provision all users that match a certain existing rule (like everyone under dn=foo, or everyone where userType=employee), then adding a new attribute and building the profile inclusion rule around it is a valid thing to do.

Using Carbon Copy Cloner which is quicker firewire 800 Macbook Pro to external hard drive or Macbook Pro to same via Airport Extreme?
Firewire 800 is the fastest and most reliable. Also it's bootable if you hold the option key down on a wired or built in keyboard. Not bootable via Airport obviously or if Filevault is used.
It's only your first clone that's usually takes the longest, it's shorter when it updates as you only do the changes which you can control to keep a pure clone if you wish.

So I know how to directly import from the camera, but I've got all these .mts files I need to import from a hard drive. Each clip has two files it seems..the .mts and a .modd maybe? I gather from a google search this is a recurring problem, but I haven't found a real answer. Do I need to create an archive file for each? I am fairly tech savvy but by no means a computer genius nor super familiar with Macs. We've got iMovie '11 on an iMac, if that matters. Any help would be great! I had my first baby in August and now I've got all these videos and nowhere for them to go...sad.
Will the VoltaicHD convert into an iMovie usable format that takes up less space (so I should always use it?) or is it just useful in converting .mts files that I already have (...asked differently I guess, does Voltaic convert into that AIC format or something else more compact?)
It can convert into other formats, but it's really big strength is just being able to open and manipulate the AVCHD formats (as there are slight variations in the different HD formats, this can be a bit of a minefield). However while iMovie can import smaller size video in more compact formats, it's not going to be as compact as the AVC/HD files. It has to reassemble 'missing pieces' that AVC/HD estimates/guesses at playing back. iMovie needs all the frames in the video to exist as discreet real video frames. AVC/HD creates one key frame, then judges the differences between the key frame and a number of frames that follow it, estimates what's changed and then saves that into the file. This saves a ton of space but is a real hazardous way to try to edit that in a typical video editing program. That's why the video clips get big once they are imported into iMovie.
Then - how do I create archives as I import? I see how to import archives already made, but not how to create.
Make sure you have the camera attached to the Mac, but also make sure you have the camera running off of the power adapter that came with it. Don't Use Battery Power. Put the camera into VCR/Playback mode. Then launch iMovie. Also make sure iPhoto doesn't try to intercept your camera when it first detects it has been connected. Quit out of iPhoto if you see it launch, then launch iMovie just to be safe. Then go to the File Menu > Import from Camera. Then choose Camera Archive option then let it copy everything itself. Otherwise you can do this manually outside of iMovie by dragging the memory card icon when it appears on your desktop. Drag it into a folder on the Mac and that will essentially create a duplicate of the card, which is in a sense all the iMovie does when it creates a camera archive. Just make sure that you erase the card after you make the duplicate on the Mac. And that's where an external hard drive would be handy that way you won't fill up your internal Mac HD too quickly. -
Inconvenient to import 50 fps AVCHD from Sony RX100M2
Hi all,
I have the Sony RX100M2 camera (European/PAL version), and when shooting videos in 50 fps they don't get imported among the photos when using iPhoto to import. This hasn't changed with the new iPhoto '11 version 9.5.
So, the way to get the videos (which play back fine once imported) into iPhoto I have to manually open the AVCHD file in QuickTime Player and then select the video files in the ”Open Clip” window that comes up. Once they're opened I have to manually save and name each clip onto my hard drive. After that I can import them into iPhoto.
Quite a few steps and upon each save I have to change the folder where to save to, because it reverts back to AVCHD file location on the camera between each save. Is there a way to automate this you think? Maybe using Automator? If there was a way to ”batch save” all movies from QuickTime Player that would help a lot too.
Finally, I can't see why iPhoto doesn't support importing these movies directly, since it obvioslu is capable of doing so in conjunction with manual work in QuickTime Player. I really hoped the new iPhoto 9.5 would handles this, but obviously not.
Any suggestions?Thanks for your reply.
Well, if I set the camera to shoot 25 fps they will import into iPhoto, but the problem then is that since they are interlaced, playback in iPhoto shows ”waves” all over the video when a somewhat quick camera movement is done. What I find really strange is that if I playback the same file in the Finder using Quick Look or open it in QucikTime Player, the video is deinterlaced and thus looks fine. Why the same playback method isn't being used in iPhoto is a bit strange, no?
Anyway, I can choose to record 25 fps and ”non-interlaced” and that imports and plays back fine iPhoto. Guess I have to go with that.
What I really just want is to have a good place to import all my media. Too bad iPhoto can't cope with the movie features of newer cameras. 50 fps video is quite nice and smooth.
What I just also noticed is that the manual procedure I described about importing the 50 fps videos unfortunately also gets rid of the ”original date” when the movie was recorded since it instead puts the date of when the save from QuickTime Player is done. Too bad…
I've sent feedback to Apple. -
I have a Canon Vixia HF M41 HD camcorder that records in AVCHD. My usage to date (using iMovie 11) has been to import, do some quick editing in a project, finalize, and then share on youtube in HD (with family) and also share via itunes.
I import everything and at highest possible quality (I think) as I may want to do more with these events in the future.
I now have access to FCP X.
I'm curious about a few things:
Should I import in AVCHD and edit in AVCHD (which I understand FCP X is capable of unlike iMovie 11) or should I use some other ProRes or some other codec? Would you guys use 1080i or 720P?
Again, I'm mostly concered about retaining best possible quality since I do erase these events from the camcorder afterwards. I have archived some as well, but I'm not sure I need to keep doing that if I make sure the event clips are kept at highest possible quality.
Thanks in advanceYou should be OK importing the AVCHD footage natively though there are certain advantages to using ProRes if you can put up with the huge files . . . 50GB per hour!
Make camera archives of your SD card and store them on your HDs.
Basically these are complete clones of your original SD card so the footage is exactly as you shot it and reasonably compact.
Always make 2 archives and put them on different hard drives as an insurance against a hard drive failing. -
Which configurations are really important for video editing?
Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie looking for the best compromise budget Mac for AVCHD 1080p video editing with Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere CS6 and Adobe Aftereffects. The storage space is not important as I'm planning to keep all the files on a Thunderbolt-connected EHD (any comments on this?).
Currently, I'm working on a iMac 27'' 3.4GHz i7 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675 MX 1024 MB and would like to get a personal machine that also works (as) smooth, but for a smaller budget. These are the options I currently have:
1. Mac mini (late 2012) MD387xx/A
2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
16GB DDR3 SDRAM
Intel HD 4000
500 GB HD
Thunderbolt USB 3
802.11n WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0
2. iMac 27'' (mid 2011)
2.7GHZ Intel Core i5
16GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
1TB HDD
3. MacBook Pro 17'' (early 2011)
2.3GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
500 GB SATA Storage
How important is the duo- or quad-core?
Which graphic card would be the best suited for video editing and graphics on FCPX/AfterEffects?
Which one would you go for if looking for a stable, strong performance for up to 5 years?
Thanks in advance for any tips!I would also post here:
