OK, so here are my 'updated' thoughts, after using the iphone for almost 4 months now. All these are my personal thoughts and not based on anything else.
I am also using a Windows Mobile device as well as Nokia 5800 touch screen phone.
UI: Apple wins hands down, followed by Nokia. Windows, you need 3rd party applications or resource hungry apps like Touch / Glide... Apple also has the most intuitive UI. Nokia is second. But since most of us are used to Windows on our PCs it is not all that difficult to master WM6.
Productivity : Windows rules here. Multitasking, Enterprise app support, document editor, etc. Better than the rest. Nokia is a distant second, while apple lacks in this department. No multitasking. You open one app and the moment you go to the home screen to open another, the first one is closed.
Performance: This to an extent is dependent on the hardware. But to me the order would be Nokia, Apple and WM (based on speed)
Battery Life: You have to give this one to Nokia. Close on its heels would be Apple, with WM with data usage giving just about a day, coming last.
Price: Nokia leads here, followed by WM and Apple. at least so in India
Settings and Control : Nothing beats WM here. With 3rd party apps, you can even make changes to the registry. Nokia comes second, with Apple nowhere in the picture. You need iTunes for everything...
Multimedia: Close contest between Apple and Nokia, with Apple coming out on top. WM is not in the picture. Might be due to hardware....
App support: WM and then Nokia. Apple is slowly getting there with App Store. But i really do not know why some apps are not available in all the stores.
Connectivity : Nokia wins here. The call quality is the best here. Least call drops too.. BT, WiFi, everything works fine.. (for some reason i found the e51i to be a bit stubborn in pairing up with my car bt kit - pioneer). Apple comes second here (It has everything, but too much controlled). No BT transfer with other devices and I do not think it supports A2DP profile. But it was the easiest oairing up with my car kit. There are some call drops though. Windows comes a very close third. It lets you do everything that Nokia does, but atleast with the devices I have used, it is not always stable. So far, I have not been able to pair a WM to my car BT kit.
Service: I dont really know. I have had good and bad experiences with Nokia. Slightly better ones with WM. Not much with Apple though to comment on it. But I will not blame Nokia, as part of the delay in the service centers is simply due to the number of handsets they deal with.
Forum Support: Nokia.. Windows.. I have not used any Apple forums yet... So not rating it...
Conclusion: All three phones have there own merits and demerits. WM and Apple excels in some and is not all that great in some, while Nokia is consistent in most and excels in few.
The best one depends on requirements.
Productivity - WM
Feel Good Factor - Apple iPhone
Connectivity - Nokia
I am waiting for the day someone combines all these into one handset... Hehe..

11gR2 is not certified to be installed on CentOS, so from that perspective alone, OEL is the only choice.

Web Start doesn't leave the gate on Linux and Mac

I am evaluating Java Web Start to decide whether to recommend it as part of a government grant proposal. My initial impression of Web Start has been a sorry one. When I go to

which tells me that I need to download Java Web Start ("a one-time process"). Fine, I click on the download link, and instead of a download, what I get is a bug-report page:

I have seen this behavior on both Linux and Mac OS X. (My Windows machine already had Web Start installed from several months ago; I don't know if this reflects a superior Windows support relative to Linux or Mac OS X support, or a better download software several months ago.)
This is a terrible first impression for one's software. Given these beginnings, any sane developer would run away as fast as possible from the Web Start technology. Clearly a lot of work has gone into Web Start, and to see squandered like this is surprising.
Our software's user base (research biologists) has large Macintosh and Linux constituencies. My experience with Web Start suggests that Web Start would be a disastrous choice for us. I hope there is a simple way around these obstacles.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I haven't tested JWS before JRE 1.4 so I can't recommend you anything if you require JRE 1.3 or before, but if you can install JRE 1.4, specially JRE 1.4.2 or after, JWS works very good on Linux and Windows. In both platforms I use deploy applications using JWS and they all work very good. I have no experience on Mac OS X.
Both platforms obviously require Java preinstalled. Also there is some ways to install Java automatically, this is something that must be done by an administrator as every other software that requieres installation and configuration on every PC. After that step, everything is very simple.
On Linux if you click on a .jnlp file for the first time, at least mozilla ask if you want to save the file or open it, you can select the javaws executable inside your java installation as the program to open this file, mark that that's the action you always want to do with that kind of files, and that's all. Also you can manually register .jnlp files and application/x-java-jnlp-file mime tipe as handled by javaws as the last part of the java installation and this first step will not be necesary.
On Windows the installer automatically register itself as insterested in handling jnlp files, so the previous step for linux is not required.

Is it possible to run a c-code program compiled for Linux on x11? If this is not possible, is there a way to have a linux platform runninn os 10.6.8 so I can use these programs?
I knew little about Linux or X11, so I don't know if it is possible or how to recompile the program for x11.

Linux compile code will not run on Mac OS X, and even if you violated the Mac OS X license to run Mac OS X in virtual machine on top of Linux, the Mac environment would still not run the Linux program. The Linux program needs to run on Linux.
If your Linux program is X11 based, then it is possible to run the program on Linux and have the output displayed on your Mac. Start an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session, and run the command
ssh -Y [email protected]
LinuxPrompt> run_your_Linux_program
The ssh -Y will establish an X11 DISPLAY tunnel between your Mac and the Linux system. When you run an X11 based app on the Linux system via this ssh session, the X11 display output will be sent back to the Mac.
NOTE: Many Open Source programs have Mac OS X ports. Sometimes there are actual Mac OS X binaries, and sometimes you have to build them yourself. There are also services that will do the heavy lifting of installing a ported Open Source app, such as MacPorts.org and FinkProject.org

it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

2.2 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro with high res anti-glare would be the best machine for you.
The 17" is fine too if you want a larger screen.
The 1GB Radeon 6750M video card will give you all you need for GPU performance for eh next 3-5 years or longer.
So the above is a future proof choice for the long haul.
(avoid the 13" and the 2.0 ghz 15", not so good graphics performance)
The anti-glare because you going to using your laptop in many different enviroments and your not going to be able to control the lights, etc to reduce the screen reflections. money well spent to see your screen properly.
Mac's can run a lot of software, they can also direct boot into Windows for Windows only programs.
Windows can also run inside OS X using virtual machine software like VMFusion (Apple likes) and Parallels, just takes a 50% performance hit on 3D games and animation.
Another nifty thing is if you set up a "bootcamp" partition of Windows for direct boot, virtual machine software can use that as a copy for the virtual machine OS in OS X. So no need to double install.
Also if your geekish, you can make a Mac triple boot. OS X, Windows and Linux too. So all software is avaiable with full hardwre perfromance.
I have a trible boot machine, also I run about 9 other operating systems on my 17" MacBook Pro in virtual machine as it's good enough for me (not a hard core 3D gamer) and easy to manage.

We are currently a PC based shop with a few MAC's tossed here and there. I have been asked to verify the file compatibility between CS 5.5 MAC and CS 5.5 PC. Are the files fully compatible? i.e. can user A on a PC create an illustrator/photoshop/etc document which is then opened by user B on a MAC with no issues?

Yes. For the programs you mentioned it has been forever this way and even for programs like Premiere Pro or Encore, that were platform-specific until recently, this is no longer an issue ever since CS5. Of course you will still have to take care of different handling for file paths on different platforms for externally linked files, but that's a different matter and nothing specific to Adobe...

I just received W770 and tried it on a PC and it worked. But when I plug the USB receiver in a macbook air (2011 MAC OS 10.6.8), it didn't work. The message I got is that MAC can't recognize the "keyboard" and asked me to press the shift button on the unrecognized keyboard- which I guess meant that the MAC treated the USB dongle as if it were a wireless keyboard of some sort. Anyway, would appreciate it if you could let me know how to make it work on MAC. The previous statement saying that it would work on any Lenovo machine regardless of OS is kinda of unclear - do you mean that it would also work on lenovo running MAC OS (is there any Lenovo running Mac OS?). Thank you for the looking at the post. The actual table names are rather ambiguous. I renamed them so it would make more sense. I will explain more and give the actual names. What I do not have is the actual data in the table. That is something I don't have
on this computer. There are no "Null" fields in either of the tables.
This table has many orders (MSORDER) that need to match one order (GLORDER) in GLORDR. This is based on MSPART joined to GLPART, MSSERIAL joined to GLSERIAL, and MSOPNDATE joined if it falls between GLSTARTDATE and GLENDDATE.

How can I share iPhoto library between users on same mac. External hard drive has not worked.

I need to share and edit photos between users on one mac. I have tried sharing the file on an external drive but this has caused all sorts of problems with photos disappearing and/or not being able to be edited. I was hoping iCloud sharing or family would work but being on the same machine I need the main iCloud account active at all times. This is a workplace so the second user has minimal access permissions.

okay I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but i just imitated the same scenario on my mac and it seems to work fine. I made sure to change permissions of the shared folder AND the the actual photo library. I gave everyone access to everything (as far as the folder & library was concerned). I uploaded & viewed from both accounts. You might want to view permissions of your entire disk in disk utility to make sure there isn't an error.. Make a backup first though.
The permissions will not stick. Earlier iPhoto versions did allow this, because iPhoto did not write to an iPhoto Library if you only wanted to browse it, but with iPhoto '11 the behaviour changed. Opening an iPhoto Library from a different account will write files with changed ownership right into the library, and that will cause problems if you edit or tag photos from a second account. The other part of the upgrade message was a warning that once you upgraded you would no longer be able to open the library with the old version which is exaclty what you did and what happened when you choose to continue
The iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library. Cancel or upgrade.
So now your choices are to not use iPhoto with the previous version using it onky with the newer version, restore your backup from before you did this upgrade or purchase iPhoto Library Manager and use it to rebuild the library using the older version of iPhoto (instructions are on their web site) thereby downgrading it (without projects)
