Which is the right one?

I just bought a new PowerMac G5 from my local Mac store. Now I want to drop in some more memory but when I go to OWC, Crucial, Techwork and the others, they're listing for RAM is all over the place. To add to the confusion some want to know if my Mac was 'late spring' 'late fall' PCI-X or Express or this or that. (head spinning) And it doesen't help when they throw in stuff like, 'Latency 4-4-4-12 , Non-ECC, Unbuffered, 1.8V' whatever that is...
Although Crucial comes closest getting the names right.
I checked the Apple web site and all the PowerMac G5's they list all come with the same PIC cards and so on...
I checked my owners manual (even though it's contrary to being a guy) and it says RAM needs to be PC2-4200, 533MHz also known as DDR2-533 (great, RAM has an alias)
sigh... So anyway, I'm finding DDR2-4200, DDR4200, PC4200, or just DDR2 533...
Someone please point me in the right direction.

Thank you for the replys. Something I forgot to
include before; I keep seeing that it requires pairs.
If I want to put in a gig of ram does that mean I
have to get two 512's or can I simply drop in a
single one gig stick?
Same thing applies for two gig; four 512's or just
two 1gb sticks?
Hi Snap the frog;
As you say memory must be installed in matching pairs with a card in each bank of memory slot in order for it to work correctly. Hence if you want an additional Gigabyte, you will need to install two 512 cards.

Hi. I'd like to delete the Snow Leopard Snapshots in my Time Machine backup drive because it won't work with Lion
I'm not sure what you mean . . . what won't work with Lion?  It sounds like it did do some backups.
Is there a way or an app to know which are Lion snapshots?
There is a way, but it's rather cumbersome.  You have to start selecting a full system restore; there's a window showing all of the backups and the version of OSX.
Is there an app I could use to manage the snapshots if manually deleting them will cause problems and side effects later.
It's best to use the Time Machine "Star Wars" display to delete backups, but you really shouldn't have to.  Let's figure out what's wrong first.

  • I need a mail server without SMTP authentification. Which is the right one? Or how to configure OSX Lions Mailserver?

    Hello folks,
our HP Scanner with email delivery is one the most used pieces of hardware in our office. Just scan and get delivered to your inbox. That works easy and perfect.
Unfortunately we had to change our standard mail server and now a prerequsisite is the smtp authentification. But the HP admin interface on the scanner does not allow to enter smtp auth credentials. It only supports smtp delivery without username/password. Now I have a serious problem. I cannot find any external provider that supports smtp mail delivery without smtp authentification (against spam of course, I understand that).
I have a OSX Lion Server running as a file server in our network. But I have no clue if there's a way to use it's mailserver without smtp auth.
Is there anyone who can help me out?
    Cheers,
    Joo-Chen

I have a OSX Lion Server running as a file server in our network. But I have no clue if there's a way to use it's mailserver without smtp auth.
    Sure. Turn it on.
The default mode is to not require authentication. You have to turn on authentication if you want it.
Changing authentication on/off is a matter of clicking a radio button.

  • Ati 3870 Mac edition which is the right one?

I've been looking over the weekend for a ATI 3870 card as an option for my mac pro. In different websites i've encountered 2 different cards all websites claim that it is the ATI 3870 mac/pc edition they are selling, however the 2 cards look very different physically.
Does anyone know what the difference is between these 2?

I agree that the Proadvantage card might be a Mac compatible but the photo is wrong. Other dealers have made that mistake.
There are actually two Mac Editions of the Radeon HD 3870 being sold at MacSales (OWC):

  • Which is the right hardware address?

If I look at Prefs->Built-in Ethernet -> Ethernet, the panel quotes an 'ethernet ID'. System Profiler -> Network gives a MAC address. Both of these look like plausible hardware addresses(6 pairs of letters and digits with colons between), but they're different. Does anyone know which is the right one to quote to register on a (BootP) network? And, just out of interest (unless there's something weird about my Macbook) what the other one refers to?
I need to get this registered to our university network but (surprise surprise) the IT people don't support Apples so they're no use.....
    Thanks

Ethernet is the category name for both the Airport and "Built-in Ethernet" devices under which the MAC addresses are listed. If you click on Network in the System Profiler left-hand panel, you should see a list of active services. This is a list of all possible network connections. One of these should be "Built-in Ethernet", and is also referred to as "en0" (Airport is "en1"). When you select "Built-in ethernet", its properties and settings appear in the pane below. This MAC address should, of course, be the same as the one in the Network preference pane.

This is the most important question. I would check with your school. They may have a recommendation for what you need and the software you will need to use. They also may have a discount program for you to purchase your computer. If not Apple does have an education discount plan to give you a break.
    5. it will need to support some software that I use on windows.
Hard to give an answer for this as we have no idea what your going to be using or what your school requires you to use. My sons college had specific programs he had to have.

Plug it in and follow the onscreen directions. That you previously had an iPod doesn't matter.

I get pop ups about updating my Java version but my system says I do have the right version. Which version of Java is the right one?

Most likely, you have a web plugin that depends on the Java runtime distributed by Apple, such as the Facebook video calling plugin or the "NexDef" plugin for watching baseball streams. If you no longer need the plugin, remove it. Otherwise, install Java.

  • Which Library is the right one?

I couldn't find this answer by searching the site so sorry if it is already here. I'd appreciate a pretty 'dumbed down' reply that is easy to follow since I don't know all that much about computers. tia
About 6 months ago I transferred all of my iTunes files to an external hard drive and I have iTunes set up to run off of those files (at least I think so, they are not on my c drive anymore)
I just bought my husband an iPod and I followed the instructions to create a new library for him by using the hold shift when you open iTunes method.
Everything is fine with that, but when I hold shift to go back to my own library it prompts me to select the library of course, and there are several versions of my iTunes library (in addition to the one I just made for DH). I selected the one that I think is the most recent and when it opened it couldn't find the files for 90% of my songs (they all have exclamation points by them) so I guess my question is - how do I combine all of my various iTunes libraries from over the years into one so I can have one for me and one for my husband and it will be easy to select when we hold shift and open?
Sorry if this is long. Thanks for the help.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have made a new library, but I'm not sure what you mean by "the folders" do you mean the old libraries that I moved, because I tried that and it still forces me to pick one when I open iTunes and none of them are the right one with all of my music it seems. Thanks again, sorry I don't get it!!

  • Which is the right compressor?

I've been producing television for quite some time -- one of the problems I run into on a fairly regular basis is which setting to use when I'm ready to deliver. Since tape seems to have gone away, most of my clients request delivery on a DVD. I'm looking for the definitive answer to which setting is the right one? My products air on local stations via our cable provider. I've used a number of different settings -- sometimes I hear nothing (indicating satisfaction), others end up telling me that they can't open the files or run the DVD (everything seems to work fine for me).
Today I got a call from a client that said the files I gave them were "too small" to run on TV. I don't know what that means and don't really care -- I just want them to be satisfied. The settings (which are a major mystery to me) that I have used recently and have worked are:
MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 1-pass.m2v -- now this is apparently too small
I've tried a number of different settings and always get different results. They have asked for .mov files -- I've tried that, but DVD Studio says that is an incompatible format. If I just drag the files to a blank DVD, they say they can't open the files. I'm confused and looking for a standard I can go to every time. Please help?

If the client wants a copy, give it to them on a tape. For one, tape is certainly not dead. DV tape is going the way of the dodo, but other tape formats will be around as long as people still need tape for delivery.
If crazy Mike wants a DVD he can watch, get a cheap DVD recorder and go from a deck, or the timeline, directly to a DVD-R. Don't use DVD+R. For the broadcast station, ask them for a spec sheet. Every station has one, and they aren't all the same. It depends on how they deliver the content to the channel. Some need an mpeg2 program stream, some need a transport stream, a few might need uncompressed, most can work with a DVD, but you have to author it correctly.
If you don't know how to author a DVD, then you probably shouldn't deliver that way. You'll only spend more of your time learning how to do it. Unless you can bill them for learning, which, in my opinion, isn't ethical.
Most likely, you could deliver an mpeg2 program stream with mpeg 1 layer 2 audio. Depending on their sever, they can probably work with a file anywhere from 6 to 15 mb/s. Make sure you give them a full size file, meaning if it's 720x480, don't give them 320x240. You have to check every setting in the compressor preset. But you have to check with the station. They may have an old server, and I know ours won't play a 15mb/s file.

  • Jdeveloper JSP-Struts (which is the right way to decalre a DataSource)

    Hello to all..
I'am developing web application for a car assicuration.
I would like to know which is the right "connection" (jndi name) to use in my application..
I have made a JDBC connection to my production databse...
Then I have made a Data Source from menu (Jdeveloper -> Tools -> Embeded Oc4J -> Current workspace -> Datasources...
Here I have created a new DataSource from "Autocreate from IDE..."...
My Question is.. which Class name I must use?
    Default class is: com.evermind.sql.DriverManagerDataSource
I see that there is also a: oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleConnectionPoolDataSource..
Which Class I must select? My application is used by many users online..
Is there any axample on oracle to see how to use JNDI connections (connection pool)..
    I'am using Jdeveloper version: 10.1.2.1.0
    best regards
    Peter

AFAIK all connections, DataSource ones included are created by calling the DriverManager. A DataSource is a factory for Connection objects (from JavaDocs)
If you're talking about managing connections then it depends on the application. A DataSource is great for apps that can support many clients or are multi-threaded, but may require a JNDI implementation to get to it.
If however you have an single threaded app that hits the database in a serial fashion, then DataSource is probably an overkill.

Plans are listed at Creative Cloud pricing and membership plans | Adobe Creative Cloud
The drop down at individual plans does show that you may subscribe to only Muse
You probably need to cancel what you have... You need Adobe support to cancel a subscription

  • Which is the right operating system for Apple PowerBook G4

Hi I want to buy a Apple PowerBook G4 but the person is telling me that it does not have a operating system and I want to know which one is the right one to buy and also that is not expensive.

If you are planning on watching video's on the internet, you may be disappointed with that Powerbook. I have a 1.67Ghz Powerbook and it struggles to play streaming video's keeping audio and visual in sync with each other. Anymore, I recommend people get an Intel-based mac if one of the planned uses is internet video.
Here's one source for new, unopened mac software, although you may not like the price: http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/ .  If you look to buy thru an auction site, be aware that any gray-faced disk is a system disk that is locked to the system it shipped with. So, for example, an iMac OS X 10.4 disk won't work on a Powerbook. Best bet is to stay with black-faced retail disks.
