Which kind of DVD Dual Layer work on MacPro DVD Drive?

On my MacPro 2X3 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon I have, as a DVD Drive, an
OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A:
Revisione firmware: 1.N8
Interconnessione: ATAPI
Supporto masterizzazione: Sì (unità fornita da Apple)
Cache: 2048 KB
Legge i DVD: Sì
Masterizzatore CD: -R, -RW
Masterizzatore DVD: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Strategie di scrittura: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Inserisci il supporto e aggiorna per mostrare le velocità di masterizzazione disponibili
Now, I purchased 50 not branded DVDs +R Dual Layer (like indicated by the features above) but every time I make a burning I get an error message on verifying ("....sector is unreadable").
My supplier told me that
"It is normal that all DVD writers have problems with some DVDs, while
others work perfectly".
So I don't know which DVD I can take..
Has anyone used successfully some kind? And which?
Tnx

There is a web site that rates DVD media brands. Verbatim DL is what I use and never had trouble.

  • DVD Dual Layer Not Working?

    Hi all!
This is my first time to these forums and I have some trouble with a used Toshiba x205-SLI1 I just bought. the HD Dual Layer burning does not function and the driver appears to be updated properly. It is a TS L802a model, with drivers dated as of 6/21/2006 version # 6.0.6002.18005.
When I insert the Memorex HD +R Media Nero 9 runs up and begins the process but only goes to about 1% then stops. It ejects the DVD which apears to have nothing written to it by looks since I can put the DVD back in and there are no written areas all i can see with data.
Plus the speed of the drive only reaches 2.4 when the max is 8X.
Is there a newer driver somewhere? I need to get this working if possible and without spending tons of money on different media types to "test" the Burner.
Does this burner have some inate problems as i have read on other forums in burning dual layer dvd's?
oh, and it does work with the normal 4.7GB DVD's just fine i have done several of these to back up data on the system.
The system is running as the following drive configuration:
2 @ 200GB Raid 0. Vista ultimate 64 upgraded from Home Premium by the original owner.
The Laptop works in everything else and is in pristine condition all over.
Let me know if more info is needed to make a determination for help please.
    Thanks in advance!
    Robert

It sounds like a hardware problem to me.  Your best bet considering it is new is to take it back to the place of purchase and exchange it for a working model (if it's within the exchange period) or contact Toshiba Support and have it repaired under warranty.  Se the Warranty Link at the top of this page for details.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • DVD Dual Layer, +/- which is better?

I've been trying to burn a dual layer DVD-R DL from iDVD6 but it won't let me, it will however let me burn a DVD+R DL even though my burner can burn both. What are the benefits however of burning one from the other as iDVD seems to mainly support DVD+R DL whereas it is always recommended to use DVD-R when burning single layer?

    Thanks guys.
The problem is I purchased a Dual layer external burner by LaCie and after some digging it appears that although it is capable of burning both +/-R DL, my system profiler only states +R DL, however I can burn -R DL through both system utilities and Toast so this leads me to think that there is a lack of support for -R DL on iDVD6 (whether this is due to the incorrect system profiler provided by LaCie?)
I've had a few tests and iDVD6 just spits the DVD-R DL back not recognising it as a dual layer disc. I've been on to LaCie and Apple about this but they're both passing off blame to each other.
Am I right in assuming that DVD+R DL can play ok in most DVD players? I obviously want to create a stable disc and burning DVD-R DL through system utilities has given me many problems on various players.

  • G4 DVD Dual Layer question

I have a 14" G4 1.07GHz iBook with a Non DVD Burning CD/CDR/CDRW/DVD drive. My question is, will it READ a dual layer DVD? Thanks!

Hhmmm...let me know if it works for you. I have (I think) the exact same setup, and my drive spits out dual discs. We bought Bruce Springsteen's The Seeger Sessions, which is a dual disc, and I had to resort to alternate methods to import the songs into my iTunes library. I Googled after having the problem and found others who had the same problem.

  • DVD dual layer write speed?

Anybody know what the maximum write speed of the Superdrive is, for dual-layer DVDs?
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" and I want to buy some blank DL DVDs.  I'm looking at Verabtim DVD+R DL blank media.  They offer both 2.4X and 8X speeds.  I've read that the 8X disks - which are more expensive, roughly 15 for the price of 20 of the slower disks - can be a problem for older drives that don't support that speed.
I already know that my Superdrive will write at 8X or more for a single-layer disk.

"Be sure to take full advantage of:
    About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Disk Burning ..."
Yup, this showed me that my 8X (single layer) disk could in fact be burned at 8X, but without any DL disks for testing, ATM doesn't tell you anything about burning speeds.
Thanks for the confirmation that I do NOT want to buy the 8X disks.  I've gone ahead and ordered the 2.4X Verbatim disks.  I also saw some labeled as 2.4-6X, and I suppose those would work with my 4X drive.

  • DVD dual layer blank media problem

    Hi,
I used HP branded media without any problems in the past. Now I got a roll of Ritek dual layer DVDs and most unfortunately the drive ejects them as if they were incompatible.
Does anybody know if Apple keeps a page with compatible media? Or is there any indication which brands would work and which don't? The dual layer media is still quite expensive and I don't know if I can convince the retailer to take back opened disks...
    Best
    Jurgen

If they're DVD-R DL discs then there's the problem. They should be DVD+R DL.

  • Duplication plant is asking me to split my dual layer disc across two DVD-R

I just sent out a Dual layer (DVD-9) disc to the plant for duplication. they told me they can't duplicate from that and i need to write the disc as two seperate DVDs one disc for each layer, and they will marry the two.
I asked if i could just split the media between two discs and they said, theat they would then need to re-author it. here's what they told me to do.
    What we would need
    is for you to create a DVD-9 master which would consist of two discs;
    Layer 0, and Layer 1.
These can be recorded to DLT tape, or can be burned onto DVD-R discs.
The authoring software you are using should be able to create a
DVD-9(two layer) master if the content you desire is too large for a DVD-5
(single layer) disc. This will require a split in the content that
    divides files between the discs.
When the images are built and burned to disc, we would receive two disc
images that will remain separated until they are bonded together into a
physical disc. A DVD player will know what to do with the two layers to
make a "seamless" product for the end user."
I tried just inserting a single layer thinking, when it ran out of space it would ask for a new disc, that doesn't work.
tried calling it a two sided disc, doesn't work.
anyone know how to do this?
    thanks
    jake

One more thing, but it is VERY important. When you have your Layer0 and Layer1 folders ready for burning, you should burn only the content of the folders on DVD-R, not the folder itself. In other words the root directory of your DVD-R should contain only Control.dat, DDPID, and Image.dat files for Layer0 disc and sometimes one file less for Layer1 disc. The discs should be clearly marked which layer they contain and if SCC and Macrovision are present. It is also won't hurt if you write down the break sector from DVD-SP log file and supply this information to a replicator. There are some replicators that can extract the files even if they are nested inside the folders, but why take a chance?

  • Help! DVD dual layer settings

I am trying to burn a 1hr and 47 minutes movie onto an 8.5 gb dual layer dvd. When I try to format this message comes up:
Formatting was not successful. The image exceeds the maximum allowed size for a dual-layer configuration.
I cannot get a successful burn. And also, when I make a break point it's still the same thing:
    layer 0 exceeds layer 1?
What do I need to do to have a successful burn with a dual layer DVD? Settings?

The first layer (layer 0) must must be bigger than the second (layer 1), in other words, your layer break must be past the "halfway point" in your media, but before the "halfway point" of the total capacity of the disc.
You would only see this message if you had manually placed a layer break marker. You have two options:
    1. move the layer break marker to a position that meets this condition, probably earlier in the main video track
    2. rearrange the contents of the disc in the VTS pane of the outline tab. There'll be a little button at the top right of the outline tab that will toggle between the two views, or you can drag the veritcal divider in this window to see the two columns in the outline tab. The VTS view shows you the order in which the media is physically arranged on the disc. You can rearrange these by dragging.
    Hope this helps

  • Dual layer break problem on DVD playback

    Hi,
    I'm on Encore CS5.1
I've got a dual layer DVD program I'm trying to output but playing stops and reverts to menu at what I believe is the layer break.
The program is approx 6.5GB in total size. I encoded prior to importing into Encore, at highest MPEG2-DVD quality. I slid quality slider all way over from 4 to 5, among other things to force highest quality. The source files are AVCHD destined for Standard Def DVD.
It took me a little while to suspect the break as the culprit. I did one burn where the disc continued playing thru the offending spot and I saw that and said to myself: "self, that looks like a layer break to me."  Upon examination it is just about exactly in the middle of this program.
I suppose I should consider encoding at lower bitrate and burning at slower speed. Can anyone who's had this problem tell me if this will likely fix it, before I re-encode.
I've also heard about manually setting the spot for the bereak and I chose "manual" not "automatic" but it did nothing to allow me manual control.
    All experienced insights welcomed.
    Thanks
    wsmith

Imgburn will help get the "best possible" burn by allowing you to select the slowest possible burn speed for the disc brand/model you are using (this is MY opinion... other people say burn at the fastest speed)
You might Google to see if you can find any reviews of the Ritek brand
As far as your layer break stoppage... I've only done a couple of dual layer projects, with Encore doing all the work with automatic settings, and have never had a problem... but, I use Verbatim dual layer, not Ritek

  • Dual Layer 'Navigaion Failure' on DVD Build in Encore CS4

    All,
I've searched the forum and see several post regarding dual layer DVD burning, but none recent.
I'm trying to burn a dual layer DVD ( Memorax DVD+R DL), using Encore CS4.   Everything encodes fine, but when Encore starts to actually burn the DVD, I get an error message "navigation build failed' (or something like that, I don't have it in front of me right now).  And yes, I did select the correct size DVD setting.  :-)
Does anyone had this trouble or have any suggestions?
    TIA,
    jd

    JD,
I would scrap the Memorex blank discs, and use Verbatim instead. Memorex has a very unpopular business model - buy the absolutely cheapest media from whomever and emboss the Memorex label onto it. In spindles of 100, users have reported up to 4 different mfgrs. stuff. One might get 10 discs that work, and then 10 that flat do not. There are several utilities that will tell you who the actual mfgr. is and the lot number. I just use the free burning utility, ImgBurn, as it will read the blank disc and report.
Now, Memorex is an easy target for me, and one of the "usual suspects," so there could be something else going on. Just in case there is, please give the full details of your Project, with Asset types, specs., and how your navigation is setup, and especially the Layer Break.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Leopard DVD Dual Layer?

I read somewhere that the Leopard DVD is a Dual Layer disc. Can anyone confirm this?
The reason I ask is because Apple just says "DVD drive" which I take to mean "a drive that reads DVD-ROM disks". My G5 iMac has a SuperDrive but my 1.25 GHz 15" G4 Al-PowerBook just has a Combo-drive. I don't think either of these can read Dual Layer disks, or am I mistaken?

    Steve Macko wrote:
Bad news first... It is certainly a dual layer DVD. Good news... Most commercial DVDs are, and they can be read by any DVD drive! The single layer versus dual layer only comes into play when creating and burning discs, not reading them.
Just about all DVD movies are dual layer, and have been since the beginning.
    Steve
    Thanks, Steve.
I know that DVD hierarchy were originally single-side, single-layer; dual-side, single-layer; single-side, dual-layer; and last dual-side, dual-layer. I didn't know that all DVD drives could read any of these. Of course, I'm ignoring the two HD flavors.

  • Combo Drive reading Dual Layer / booting from external DVD USB

I am helping a friend with an iMac G5. He has the combo drive which is not able to read the dual layer Leopard DVD. I have looked to see if there is a firmware update for the drive however no luck. I am able to put an external usb DVD and it reads the disk however I was not able to boot from the disk using keyboard commands I tried AppleOption+ShiftDelete, C, and also tried Option but no luck.
I have been reading that booting from usb external drive is a no no on older G5 iMac's unless you are using fire wire. If any one can give me some help with getting the USB drive to boot, or figuring out why the combo drive spits out the DVD every time I would appreciate it. I am also willing to make a bootable usb leopard thumb drive, but I don't want to waste my time if it's not going to boot from USB.
    Thanks,
    jtadmin

Do you happen to have a more recent Mac that can read the Leopard installation DVD?
If so, you may be able to start up your Mac in FireWire Target Disk Mode,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
and let the iMac G5 use your Mac's optical drive to boot from the Leopard DVD.
Also, it is true that PowerPC Macs can generally only boot from external drives that are FireWire.
