Which kind of SSD hard discs do support with earlier 2011 MBP ?
I'm using 15 inch earlier 2011 MBP. I would like to replace hard disc to a new SSD hard disc to improve performance. But I don't know which kind of SSD works fine for it. Does anyone work fine? Could you give me some successful experience? Thanks a lot.
BTW, Can I use SATA3 SSD? And any problems here?
Thanks a lot!

is it a hard questions?

  • XT750Gb + SATA II 128Gb SSD DIY Fusion Drive setup in Early 2011 MBP

So I have these two drives- a Momentus XT750Gb Hybrid Drive, and a 128GB SSD. I had planned on using them as separate drives, with the 128SSD in the optical bay, but recently I've been reading about Fusion Drives, and I was wondering if anyone had used this configuration in a Macbook Pro. I realize that the hybrid nature of the XT750Gb means that it is optimized for use as a boot drive, but is there any reason why it shouldn't be used as outlined above? I plan on making a clean install, and I realize I'll have to get into terminal, although I'm not overly happy about that- this is not my area of expertise at all-
If anyone has any observations or opinions, I'd be glad to hear them-
I've searched for this particular topic, but nothing specific has come up-
    Thank you-
    joe

    Thank you-
I think SATA II speeds might be adequate for my needs- much faster than the stock HDD, and the OS, Program and file handling capabilities of the Fusion Drive setup might be worth it. I guess I'll just have to try it, see if it works at all...
Of course, the speed gain is important, but perhaps only if long term reliability is maintained-
    Thanks again-

  • Installing Windows 7 on Replacement SSD in optical bay Early 2011 MBP

So i just bought a 120gb SSD and a optical bay enclosure that i installed into my early 2011 MBP. I also bought a optical drive external usb enclosure. I was hoping that I could use bootcamp to install Windows 7 onto the SSD but when i go through the bootcamp menu and my laptop restarts im stuck with a blank black screen. Ive also tried using bootcamp to create a bootable USB (which i had to do a work around to get to work because it supposed to only work for MBA) that didnt work. Can anyone help?

    ANYONE???

  • Problems with 17" 2011 MBP optibay sata speeds for SSD.

I have a 17" early 2011 MBP.  I noticed that the optibay SATA is only 3GB/S.  Since I need to set up an internal RAID with SSD (SATA III 6Gb/S), and newer versions are now supporting this (I was under the impression that my earlier one would too), what are my options to get the optibay to work at the proper speed?  Do I need to replace the MBP?  Are there fixes that can be done by Apple repair?
I need this for a number of on site video editing jobs that I need to complete over the next four months.  without the RAID set up, i don't see how I can do this.  I am also in process of getting the new thunderbolt RAID for in the office.
Can anyone give me advice on how to address this issue?  I can swap the system as long as I can pull the current disk drive (and replace with the one that was delivered with the system), if that is what I need to do.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi David,
What little I know about this for sure is that there are at least 2 different optical drive interfaces for the 2011 17" MBP.
I bet you can guess the difference; iirc correctly, the ones that shipped early on have the SATA II interface, while later/current ones have the SATA III. You can check yours in System Profiler, but again, I bet you know already. Again, iirc, the early ones cannot be updated to run at SATA III/6Gbps.
I don't know any of the above with 100% certainty, so I would continue looking/asking, but if it is correct, that means you'd need a new MBP (and need to make sure it's newer stock; what the cutoff is, I have no idea). fwiw

In users manuals on page 29 I found info that you need active 3D glasses with part number FPT-AG03.
To be honest Im really wondering none of them was delivered with yor TV.
Anyway, use this part number and you can order 3D glasses separately.
Good luck and enjoy your 3D TV.

  • Does Mac osx 10.8.2 support FDE SSD drive on early 2011 MBP?

  • Hard drive issues with early 2011 13" please help!

    Hello everyone,
I'm new here but I need immediate help! I'll try to make the story somewhat short:
    I have a macbook pro early 2011 13".
    - Closed my lid one day (I did not make any changes or installed anything new recently) and upon reopening many hours later, the system was frozen.
    - Did a hard shut off and upon turning it on, I get the crossed out circle.
    - Recovery HD also gave me the same crossed out circle.
    - Used internet recovery and formatted/partitioned the drive.
(Note that the drive in the bay at the moment is a Kingston HyperX SSD, not the OEM Samsung HD as I am actually using that as my secondary hard drive in my CD drive bay, which has been working fine the entire time before and during everything)
    - Tried to reinstall Lion from internet recovery but it wouldn't detect the SSD.
    - Strange, so I decided to install Lion onto an external hard drive and installed Mavericks onto the internal drive from there, successfully too.
    - Same results (crossed out circle) upon booting into the internal drive (likewise for the recovery HD).
    - I pulled out the drive and popped it into an enclosure and it could boot up from there.
    - Took it a step further and purchased an additional SSD, partitioned it and installed Mavericks on it via the external hard drive (not the SSD in the enclosure)
    - I can boot up from the new SSD, however it is extremely sluggish and freezes every few seconds with the spinning beach ball.
I am about to reinstall a newly downloaded copy of Mavericks onto the new SSD to see if it will fix the issue (which I doubt)
Could it be a problem with the drives or is it the SATA cable that is malfunctioning?
I'm not sure whether or not it is worth spending so much time repairing it because I've already spent a good three or four days getting this far.
Are the parts, repairs, hard drive replacements worth it or should I just replace it?

Did you format the external drive for use with OS X?
Open Disk Utility. Does Disk utility see the connected drive?
Format it to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • New Hard Drive in MacBook Pro Early 2011, can't reinstall Mountain Lion.

My computer started having issues for some reason, it would just restart randomly about every 5-30 minutes. Disk Utility said that the drive needed to be reformatted, so I went into Recovery mode and erased the Hard Drive and then tried to reinstall it and it crashes EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to install it.
I will say this though, my computer has two hard drives instead of 1. I took out the optical drive and replaced it with a hard drive. For some reason the bootable drive was the optical, so I tried installing it on the main system drive. Well, I can't get Mountain Lion to install on either drive so I went and got a new one, but that one is having problems as well.
I took the computer into Simply Mac and left it with them to get an estimate on a trade in value and to see if they could Mountain Lion to install. Well they did something, because they got it installed, but my computer is still restarting quite often. I want to install it on the system drive (new hard drive) and then have the other drive for memory storage.
IF YOU HAVE ANY ANSWERS OR HELPS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ABSWER. I'll try my best to give you guys all the information you.
15.4 inch Early 2011 MacBook Pro
    2.2 GHz Quad Core i7
    16 gig Ram
SSHD 1 TB Hard Drive as main drive
5400 RPM 1 TH Hard Drive as optical drive
1 gig dedicated AMD RADEON (7850?)Graphics

What I am primarily interested in right now is how do I install Mountain Lion on the new Hard Drive. I don't have an Optical Drive in the computer because I put in another Hard Drive for more space in the computer.
I can't boot from an External Disc Drive, I can from a bootable USB drive, but it crashes everytime.
Even downloading from the Internet Recovery doesn't work. When it gets nearer to the end of the download, it says that there is 8000 more hours of download time, and then shortly after that it crashes back to the Main Recovery Screen. It won't install it on the new Hard Drive, this is what it does on the USB stick of Mountain Lion.
    Can anyone help me?

  • Kernel panic, Yosemite, early 2011 mbp, samsung SSD

I am getting kernel panics about once a day, or once every two days. My system is an early 2011 MacBook Pro, with a new SSD from Samsung (850 Evo). The OS is a clean install of Yosemite from an USB drive.
Everything is running great, except these occasional kernel panics. Does anyone have any ideas?
I'm hoping its not an incompatibility between the Samsung drive - I bought it on the advice of a technician at the Apple store after my original one broke.
In case it means anything to anyone, here is my crash report...  help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

You installed a third-party system modification that includes a kernel extension. It might (or might not) be called "Syphon Virtual Screen." Remove it and see whether the panics stop.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • SSD Will Not Format in Optical Bay? (Early 2011 MBP, Lion, Samsung SSD)

    Computer Specs:
    Early 2011 17 Inch MBP
    2.3 GHZ Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

    Optical Bay Drive Holder Specs
    MCZ Tech OptiBay

    Problem:
When I install my SSD in the Optical Bay, I'm unable to format and use the drive.
I have two of these SSD's and I plan to copy my existing MBP hard drive to one of the SSD's and then run two 512 GB SSD's in my MBP.
The SSD comes with a USB cable so I tested both drives with the cable. I can format both drives. Move files around. Restart and they still work.
I started by putting one of the SSD's in the Optical bay to test it out. When I restart it says the drive needs to be initialized, even though it already was. If I try to format the drive it gets half way and just sits there without doing anything. I've let it sit for quite some time and nothing happens. If I keep retrying eventually I can get the drive to format and work. I can move files too and from the drive but when I restart the computer, the drive is gone and needs to be initalized again.
I found Samsung has updated firmware so I had a coworker update the drives on his PC as that's the only way to do it.
I then installed the drive back in my MBP and I have the same issue with the drive not initializing properly. This is true for both drives I own and I have not tried moving the SSD to the primary HD bay. I checked the OS X Software update and I'm all up to date as far as I'm aware. I do not know how to check my MBP Firmware and I'm not sure if this is something I need to do.
Has anyone experienced this issue and have any solutions?

I have a similar scenario.  While waiting for my optical bay to arrive I installed the SSD in the primary HDD bay, formatted it, installed OS X Lion, etc.  It was working great.  When the bay arrive I moved it over to that and I was no longer able to boot from the SSD.  Just had the spining progress wheel under the Apple logo on boot.  I booted to my previous HDD via a USB enclosure and I could see the SSD and read files from it but cannot format it or install OS X on it.  I've had the following errors at various steps...
Can't download the additinoal components needed to install Mac OS X
... when booted into the Recovery HD to resinstall OS X on the SSD
Volume Erase failed with the error : File system formatter failed.
... when trying to format the SSD in the optical bay via Disk Utility
Partition failed with the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed
... when trying to partition the SSD in the optical bay via Disk Utility
    Some "-254" error
... when trying to partition the SSD in the optical bay via Disk Utility
Has anyone solved this with the SSD in the optical bay?  I would prefer to keep the SSD (with the OS) there rather than trusting my data drive in it.

  • Your recommended SSD for Early 2011 MBP?

    Hi guys,
I just wanted to get some suggestions on a robust, lasting SSD I can rely on for maybe 2-3 more years.
My computer is a 15'' Early 2011 Macbook Pro. I'm currently running OS X Yosemite.
Here are the ones I am looking at:
    1. Samsung 850 Pro http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LF10KNA
    2. Samsung 840 Pro http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-2-5-Inch-Solid-MZ-7PD256BW/dp/B009NB8W RU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1416850034&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+840+p ro
    3. Samsung 840 Evo http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-250GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7TE250BW/dp/B00E3W1726/ ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1416850052&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+840+evo
Which of those 3 would you recommend? I got my Macbook Pro new at the end of 2011, and I'd like to use it for another
2-3 years, especially with Intel Skylake coming out next year or the year after.
I'd also like to add that I upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 8GB (Crucial) last month.
    Thanks!

See http://www.macsales.com for memory and SSD upgrade kits.
SSDs have gone through hundreds of TBs (as in 300-500TB) of torture writes in serious of tests with different makes. There is no reason not to as long as it will fit and may need to be an "M-series"
PCIe-SSD offer 700MB/sec or slightly better than SATA III performance when using 1x PCIe lanes (as found in Apple's laptops). The actual Mac Pro uses 4x and will likely get an upgraded chip offering 1.4GB/sec soon. Mac Pro can be relied on to work for 4-8 years but they are not quite portable. But they are upgradeable more readily.
I can't move threads either. Can ask to do so.

  • Installing Snow Leopard onto early 2011 MBP SSD

I want to install a Crucial M500 480GB into my early 2011 MacBook Pro. First, two questions:
Performance and speed-wise, which OS should I install? Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks?
Say I decide to install Snow Leopard onto the SSD (fresh install). How would I do that? Given that:
my model will not boot up from the retail Snow Leopard disk (I had to clone a drive from an early 2008 Mac Pro containing 10.6.8 to my MBP's drive)
the early 2008 Mac Pro only has 3.5" bays and SATA II connectors (the SSD I want is SATA III)
What I have in mind is this (feel free to improve/correct if anything is wrong or could be done better):
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my current MBP HD (which includes a Bootcamp partition) to an empty drive on my Mac Pro.
Install the SSD into the MBP.
Boot into Target Disk Mode so the SSD mounts on the MP. Then use the MP's Disk Utility to format SSD to correct settings.
Clone drive containing 10.6.8 from MP to MBP's SSD.
Boot into Target Disk Mode (the other way) so MP's drives mount onto MBP. Move wanted files from old HD to new SSD.
Thanks for taking the time to help out!

I purchased a USB 3 enclosure from OWC and inserted my new SSD. Plugged it into my 2011 MBP with SL and used Disk Utility to Restore my internal MBP HDD over to my SSD. Afterwards I tested the SSD to be sure I could boot from it. Last, I installed it into my MBP and it booted up with no issue. Everything went smooth.

  • Hard disk for second-hand 13" early-2011 mbp (2.7 hz i7, 8gb ram)

i might be able to get hold of a cheap, second-hand 13" early-2011 macbook pro, specs are 2.7 ghz core i7 with 8 gb ram. it will not come with a hard disk.
i'm thinking of asking a friend to help install the harddrive but as far as i know he's not a mac user. do you know if this mbp can accept any generic hard disk? are there any restrictions as to what can be used and is there anything he should be aware of?

First, you're going to need a hard drive. Currently, for the MBP, you can choose from three types of drives. SATA drives (for the current MBP, SATA-3) a reliable and come in two speeds, 5400 or 7200RPM. SSDs are solid state drives, and can be fast and reliable. Hybrid drives are a cross between the two types.
Several sites will provide you with video tutorials on installing the drive. OWC has a variety of helper tutorials.
Once you get the drive, you're going to have to install the operating system. Currently, the OS is downloaded via internet, but you can still find copies of an older OS on eBay that comes on DVDs.
Feel free to ask more questions!

  • Take 2010 MBP hard drive & stick it into a 2011 MBP? Problem? Will it work?

    Have 15" 2010 MBP.
    Upgrading to 15" 2011 MBP.
Can I simply take the HD out of the 2010 system, stick it into the 2011 system, boot from CD, and reinstall OS X?
Also, can I do the same thing with the 2011 HD that will be going into the 2010 model?

Yes. Use the CD that comes with the new Mac.

Yes. Use either the CD that came with the 2010 model, or a retail Snow Leopard disc. The one that comes with your new Mac won't boot the old one.

  • Hard drive replacement (MacBook Pro Early 2011)

    I have a MacBook Pro Early 2011 - OS X Version 10.9.3
    Processor - 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory - 10GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Macintosh HD - Start up Disk
I am looking to replace my hard drive (500GB) with a 4TB Hard Drive ( I have tons of digital copies of movies and home videos/pictures)
I have looked around the Intrawebzors and can't really find a hard drive that is definitively compatible.
With that being said, I am very aware that replacing a hard drive is easy (the actual labor) BUT - what is the process of transferring the data???? I have ALOT of stuff (500GB HD COMPLETELY FULL) and it would be horrible to lose any of it !! , Is it
Now is it cost effective to just have apple do this for me at one of the local locations??? Or is it easy like the labor of actually installing the Hard Drive...Very Confused can't get straight answers without asking the questions I have..
Thank you in Advance for your responses! Much Appreciated!

There are no internal 4TB drives that would fit in your machine. The largest spinning drives that I am aware that would fit into your machine are 1.5TB. Cost would be right at $100 or slightly above I think.
Installing the drive is very straight-forward and there are many videos on line that walk you through the process.
If you actually need 4TB of space, I would suggest purchasing a 4TB external drive.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
