Which language will you prefer?

Hey guys,
My programming skills are limited. I am self thought and my way of doing things may not exactly be textbook.
I am trying to make a baseball game played with dice. I have an old simple version of the game written in Java. There are no graphics and the game is just run on a command prompt. I have another version that is played online but that is written in really sloppy JavaScript.
The eventual goal of course is to get a company to pick up the game. I know the more I do, the easier it is for a company to invest their time and money. Is it worth it for me to create some kind of graphics by learning Action Script? Does it matter if i do it in Java or JS?
I'd like to also suggestions for flash funda or if you think any better one?
Thanks
Paul

  • Canon EOS-1D X vs. EOS-5D MK III - Which camera do you prefer ?

Canon has two excellent full frame cameras occupying their higher end of the DSLR market. They are the EOS-1D X and the EOS-5D MK III. I have been using Canon equipment for about 25 years now and started with the EOS-1 series when it first came out in 1989 and the EOS-5 series when it first appeared on the market in 2005.
I am a Wildlife and Travel photographer and have used both cameras extensively out in the field. The two questions I get asked the most are, which is a better camera and which one do you prefer? My answers are always the same two questions, what type of photography are you shooting and how much do you want to spend? This analysis will not have photos, charts and graphs and assumes the reader is already familiar with Canon equipment. It will get straight to the point on my opinion of the two cameras from the viewpoint of a photographer out on photo shoots.
First, let us compare the major specs of the two cameras, EOS-1D X vs. EOS-5D MK III :
Sensor Resolution :  18.1 MP  vs.  22.3 MP
    ISO Sensitivity :  100 - 204800  vs. 100 - 102400
Processors :  Dual DIGIC 5+ and 1 DIGIC 4  vs.  One DIGIC 5+
Recording Media :  Two CF slots  vs.  One CF and One SD slot
    Viewfinder :  0.76X  vs.  0.71X
Burst Rate :  14 fps  vs.  6 fps
    Autofocus :  61-AF points  vs.  61-AF points
    Cycle Count :  400,000  vs.  150,000
    DxOMark Sensor Score :  Overall - 82  vs.  81
Low Light Performance :  2786 ISO  vs.  2293 ISO
    Weight and Dimension :  6.2 x 6.4 x 3.3 @ 3.37 lbs  vs.  6.0 x 4.6 x 3.0 @ 2.1 lbs.
    List price :  $6,799  vs.  $3,499
Both cameras are excellent performers out in the field. The 1D X is completely weather sealed and can stand up to most conditions. AF is lighting fast and high ISO performance are superb and as you can see from the specifications above, they are almost evenly matched in performance but the EOS-1D X edges out the EOS-5D MK III in Sensor Score, Low Light Performance, burst rate and cycle count, while the 5D MK III has an edge in pixel count. So, going back to the original questions posed to me :
    Q : Which is a better camera ?
A : They are both great cameras in their own right. If you are primarily a Wildlife photographer, the obvious choice is the EOS-1D X. It comes through for me under extreme conditions with little fuss and stands up to harsh use but if you are into Portrait and Landscape photography, the higher megapixel count in the 5D MK III will allow a slightly more robust cropping and lends itself to very big photo prints.
Q : Which camera do you prefer ?
A : If I were strictly a Landscape or Portrait photographer, I will pick the EOS-5D MK III. A photographer shooting both Wildlife and Landscape/Travel will do better with the EOS-1D X.
Q : Which camera is the better value (price dependent) ?
A : Without a doubt, I have picked the EOS-5D MK III as the best value in full frame DSLR camera on the market today.
    Q : Which is a better camera, overall ?
A : Without another doubt, the EOS-1D X excels in all categories but at a price some may not want to, or cannot afford. Good, used ones will appear on the market eventually.
Q : Which camera would you buy (price dependent) ?
A : The Canon EOS-1D X represents the pinnacle of Canon's camera technology. There is really no substitute to shoot with the latest 1D. The performance, feel and ruggedness of the camera exudes confidence. I have not bought the EOS-5D MK III because I still own the original 5D and I have the EOS-1Ds MK III as well. So, there is little room in my equipment bag for another full frame camera but the price of the 5D MK III is now down to $2,600 on eBay (limited quantity) and is tempting me by the day.
For full details on each camera's specifications, visit the Canon USA website. For a detailed analysis on the EOS-1D X, visit this page. You can visit MichaelDanielHo.com to see photos taken with all the cameras.

I went through the same drill - came down to $3300 extra for 14 vs 6 fps.  I bought the 5DIII.

  • Which approach do you prefer for upgrade

When upgrade 9.2 to 10.1 or 10.1 upgrade 10.2, which approach do you prefer, DBUA, manual ipgrade, export/import or data copying? Oracle document suggests to use DBUA, but from your experience, does it convince and why?
    Thank you for sharing,

For me, It depends of the database size and business constraints.
If the DB is small I'd probably use export/import, because it gives me the opportunity to make a very clean move, and use new features like LMT, or ASM.
If time is a constraint and the DB is big I'd run DBUA. but remember that DBUA also has limitation, for example you will net be able to upgrade an Oracle DB 7.X to 10G using DBUA.
    Hope this helps,

  • If you  own an ipad and mac book air which one do you prefer

I currently own an ipad and was wondering if i should perhaps buy a macbook Air to sort of "replace" my ipad. My question is, is the macbook Air better than the ipad?

I'm going to be getting an iPad soon, which I will have in addition to my MBA. Why do I want an iPad when I've got an MBA? Because I love to read and an iPad is better for reading books and magazines. I'm sure I'll also find a lot of other apps doing things that I couldn't do on an MBA (the Air does not, after all, have a touch screen and a touchpad is not at all the same). My sister-in-law uses her iPad to fingerpaint. And the iPad is way more useful on a car ride for watching movies, listening to music, playing games, checking maps. It is very useful to not have to flip open a lid and balance two halves of a device on one's knee rather than one.
BUT...I'm a writer. I type pretty much every day and for long hours during that day. As a touch typist, I need to feel those keys. I can't work on flat glass staring at the keyboard. An iPad is fine for short e-mails or notes, but for writing essays, blogs, novels? I think not. I could, of course, have gotten the keyboard that goes with the iPad. I know a writer who did that and uses only the iPad. But that doesn't work for me. I love my MBA for writing and web-creation. However, when I'm sitting at lunch, I don't like pulling out my computer to read. I like the idea of an iPad that takes up very little room, and can be adjusted to any angle, and which flips the page with a tap in the corner.
Which is better? Which ever one does what you most need it to do. If I didn't write, if I was only a reader or an artist, I'd have only an iPad. But I do write, and so I have an MBA. What do you do and what do you most need your "computer" to do? That's the question you have to answer before we can advise you.

  • When restoring a mailbox, which command do you prefer to use?

I was accustomed to using New-MailboxExportRequest, but just learned how to use Restore-Mailbox.
Is there one command that you prefer to use instead of the other?  Just curious.
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hi,
I agree with Andy. We use the New-MailboxExportRequest cmdlet to export contents of a primary mailbox or archive to a .pst file. When the request encounters corruption in the mailbox, we can add the BadItemLimit parameter to specify the number of bad items
    to skip.
And the Restore-Mailbox cmdlet is used to extract mailbox content from a restored database. The Restore-Mailbox cmdlet can only use disconnected mailboxes on a server as a source of data, and the cmdlet can only use connected mailboxes as a target for data.
If you want to learn more about the Restore-Mailbox cmdlet, you can refer to
    Restore-Mailbox.

  • Encrypt sensitive passwords in shell script - Which one do you prefer ?

    Hi ,
I am looking for various options to encrypt a sensitive password in a unix shell script. After a bit of googling, I learned about 'shc'.
Can you please advice on what things you use for this purpose, if any ?
    My requirement / idea is
A .sql file will have to be executed by a shell script in SQLPLUS as USER/XXXX . The .sql file will be prepared by developer and will be put to a directory to which their osuser - say 'user1' will have write access. I will have 'oracle' user in the server , who is the DBA user. I want them to run this SQL like, runthis.sh test.sql where runthis.sh is owned by oracle user and will reside in some directory owned by DBA user. I am planning to configure schema password (USER/XXXX) in runthis.sh , which a developer is not supposed to know.
But if I give execute permission for 'user1' to runthis.sh, it becomes readable and all can read the password. Is there anyway , I can store encrypted password in SQLPLUS connect string in this file / encrypt shell script as such ?
    Thanks in Advance.
    With Regards,
    SSN

The Oracle account should be identical to the O/S account, and set up as 'externally identified'

  • For black and white images in technical manuals, which format do you prefer?

So, I'm new at this company, and the person who is training me uses the EMF format for the images on the manuals.
Do you think a PNG file would be a better option for illustrations?

    > ... 90% of the manuals are digital (burned into a CD)
Presumably as PDFs, which the ends users then either view on line or print locally?
    > ... and 10% are printed in grayscale.
    On what type of press?
You probably want the images optimized for on-line viewing.
In the case of line art, this means staying in vector form, so that it scales cleanly, and using a stroke weight that is optimized for typical resolutions and convenience printing.
In the case of raster art, this means having enough resolution to maintain detail at reasonable zoom, and on convenience printers.
For vector, we normalize stroke weights to about 0.2 point, save as EPS and import the EPS. On Frame versions later than 7.x, PDF import might also be stable, and preserves vector as vector. SVG I haven't tested.
For raster contone (grayscale or color), avoid JPEG in the workflow. It is lossy and introduces artifacts. Never use it for screen shots or scans. Even if your camera image is JPG, convert it to an uncompressed form during edit and post-processing, such as PSD. Our target delivery resolution for contone is 200 dpi. This is slightly more than our press can resolve, but provides a bit of zoom for PDF viewing. We save the final images as EPS, and import those. TIF is also OK for this application (uncompressed). We select the compression level during PDF generation.
For bitmap images, again avoid JPG. We optimize these for 600 dpi (our press resolution), save and import them as TIF (EPS is really clumsy for bitmap).
EPS is a bit annoying to work with in Frame, as what you see during edit is a thumbnail or preview (72 dpi), but what renders to Ps or PDF is original vector or full raster. But EPS is fast, rock solid, and (if you need it) can preserve original CMYK color into the Ps or PDF.

  • Icondom or invisble shield  Which one do you prefer?

    Hi,
it will be nice if those who try both, could give their opinion here,
    thanks
    peter

May not be guaranteed but they will be...
I had the option of either and must say I am glad with my choice N95.
The fact it has the expandible memory (I have already heard of several crashes on the 8GB version and they have lost everything).
With the latest FW version, the battery has dramatically improved (I get more than one day use with a lot of usage on the phone). That includes sat nav, wifi, bluetooth, calls, texts etc.
The phone feels better to me (and my friends that have the 8GB version and now regret it).
Looks is a matter of opinion but I feel the 8GB version looks cheap.
My friends have commented on the slider feeling more solid on my phone than theirs.
The lens cover IS an advantage - you may be able to blow dust of, but what about scratches?
    just my 2 pennies worth
The best way to get a quick response is to use the boards. Please do not be offended if I don't answer emails immediately.

  • Which one do you prefer?

The profile that is automatically profiled with X-Rite 24 Colorchecker chart, or any of your camera vendor's? What I have learned after reading a couple of books, and searching through several internet forums is that I need the colorchecker chart to calibrate MY OWN camera. I just want to make sure that it will give me better result than my Nikon D300 camera profiles before I spend $75.00. Has anyone compared the results?

    Thanks for your comment, Ramon.
I thought Camera manufacturers finally decided to open up their encrypted color profiles so that Adobe could have them in ACR. Was I wrong? Was it Adobe who made all the camera profiles like Nikon's Vivid, Neutral, Canon's Faithful, and so on, accessible in ACR? That's a really outstanding job.
The default ACR 4.4, Adobe Standard color profiles for my own D300 have too strong red so I'm now using Nikon's Picture Control Profiles in ACR.
They give my raw images nice color(more than reality) which was made by the professionals in Nikon whose job is making color profiles. They just look better than what I made (without colorchecker) by adjusting HSL panel based on ACR 4.4 profile, as an amateur photographer.
But, they not only have exact same color of Nikon Picture Controls, but also their problems. For example, the transition between clipped highlight and midtone is posterized. And moving recovery slider to the right shifts the color significantly. Of course, default ACR 4.4 profile doesn't have these problems.
I'm trying to escape from those problems by calibrating my D300 and building my own profile. I already ordered it. :)

  • Which CC do you prefer and why?

    Choices are:
    Built-in CC effects of PR
    SpeedGrade
    RedGiants Magic Bullet
Synthetic Aperture Color Finesse (requires QT)
Given the 4 options shown above, what are your preferences and why? I know this is a broad question, but I would be interested to hear your opinions.

Hmm. I am not sure how to answer. Back when I used CS3 I used Magic Bullet and I had no direct experience with the others at that time.
Magic Bullet is easier to use, in my opinion, but that is not always going to make it the right choice.

  • So, which method of powersaving do You prefer?

I just got a new laptop and I'm currently looking into my powersaving script again to see how much battery life I can squeeze out. I'm reading up on alot of things and just came across three different methods to achieve the same, e.g. enable powersaving:
    1. You can pass the options through modprobe at boot;
    2. You can pass the options directly to the kernel at boot;
    3. You can set them at runtime
For example, USB autosave can be enabled in either of the following methods:
    1. /etc/modprobe.d/usbcore.conf
    options usbcore autosuspend=1
    2. Kernel boot options (ie. in grub's menu.lst):
    usbcore.autosuspend=1
    3. At runtime, per device, with:
    for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend; do echo 1 > $i; done
for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/level; do echo auto > $i; done
Now I'm curious, which way do you prefer and why? I think I would prefer setting them all at runtime, just so I have all the different options (including those that can not be set by modprobe or directly at the kernel) grouped together in a script - but perhaps you can convince me of the better way!
EDIT: Oh, and of course there also are udev rules! Of course, kernel parameters and modprobe values do not enable toggling, so these might be less favored.

Honestly, I just did what powertop told me to do.  So, at the time, I just googled things one by one, but I have since found out that you can output an html file from powertop that will tell you what to write to which files in order to set them to to "good".
It highly depends on your system and what modules and hardware you have.  So it is rather pointless to simply copy and paste the numerous configurations here.  But in general, if the option/file shown by powertop is a in /sys/module typically there is a parameter that can be set when the module loads.  So in those cases, you can use /etc/modprobe.d.  For the others, you can typically just use udevadm to do an attribute walk and get a few parameters to individualize a given setting, and then of course set the actual file in question.
Here is an example of what I use to set the satalink power management:
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="host*", SUBSYSTEM=="scsi_host", SUBSYSTEMS=="scsi", ATTR{link_power_management_policy}="min_power"
Module parameters should be fairly obvious how to set as well if you are willing to read the man page.  But here is an example of the snd_hda_intel module's powersave function:
    % cat /etc/modprobe.d/snd_hda_intel.conf
    options snd_hda_intel powersave=1
I guess the only other thing that I forgot to mention was a few sysctl.d (formerly sysctl.conf) settings that are recommended by powertop as well.  I know off the top of my head that it recommends you set /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode to '5'.
