Which lenovo programs are useless to have??

I would like to clear up some of lenovos programs that are taking up space on he computer. If I clean up some stuff will I reduce start up and shut down times?

Without having to even know what they do?

Which of the in-built programs are useless to you?

In an E-series phone, there are many a program that come bundled with the phone, a few of which you might have never used for some reasons. An unused program might be simply useless to you, or it might be lacking the specific functionality you want, or the way it performs a certain task might be annoying, or its interface might be ugly, or its functionality might be limited, or a better third party alternative might be available, or there may be another reason. I's just wondering how many bundled programs just go unused as I found a number of them to be useless for one reason or another (I have an E71). These include the following (I might add more later) with brief reasons for why I don't use them:
About (not so interesting to be usable multiple times)
Activation Keys (don't know what they are; probably don't need to know either)
Active Notes (I find simple text "Notes" sufficient for my needs)
Device Manager (I ain't advanced enough to understand it)
Calculator (not easy to use; no scientific or advanced mathematical functions; it's an insult to the processor)
Encryption (I'm afraid of using it, yes, my own paranoia)
Facebook (do not need to use this app)
Folders like Documents, Games, Images, Installed files, Other, Sound clips, and Video clips (I have arranged my data in the folders of my choice; unfortunately, I cannnot delete the folders Nokia imposed over me but I never use them)
Front camera (so few people in my contact list like to use the video calls; and I haven't yet found any app to access this camera while not on a video call)
Gallery (doesn't let me control what data I want in there)
IM (do not need to use it)
Internet Radio (I prefer a third party one)
Internet Telephone (do not need to use it)
Lotus Notes email something (it kept reinstalling even after I removed it; had to delete its installer from C drive manually, not visible in the built-in file manager)
Modes (I remain in one mode)
Music Player (doesn't let me control what files I want in there)
Music Store (do not need to use this app; I prefer a bigger system over a phone for music)
My Nokia (never opened it)
MySpace (do not need to use this app)
OVI Store (I prefer using it via browser; the app always seems to keep updating itself)
Podcasting (do not need to use this app)
Printers (I prefer to use a computer for printing tasks)
PTT (do not need to use it)
Search (do not need to use it)
Setting Wizard (used once)

Doesn't every single phone on the market contain un-removable apps that are useless to some people but useful to others? Personally I just stick the stuff I don't use in a folder and move it somewhere I won't see it as often.
Do you actually have a support issue or are you just moaning about the old obsolete version of the operating sysyem in your new old phone again?

I have lost all my documents in both pages and numbers. these programs are useless to me. I see there are other angry people out there too. Can these documents be found. Tried backup and did not work.

Can someone help. Is this a flaw in the Pages and Numbers App? I have lost all my files!

Speed at which JAVA programs are executed

While it is true that a typical JAVA program will execute slower than an equivalent program written in other languages such as C++.
Is it because the compiled bytecodes (.class) have to be interpreted by the JVM?

yep, a .class is bytecode... the JVM interprets the bytecode "on the fly".
The JVM's major task is to "interpolate" native operating system requests. That's why the JVM is platform specific.
The bytecode to native interpretation takes a few clock ticks, so it's a might slower than native compiled code... but it's practically important to realise that this is not the big performance hit inherent in a "Virtual Machine"... the big (potential) performance loss is the overhead of "interpolating" every single O/S interface request... hence String BufferedReader.readLine() is light-years faster than char InputStream.read(), because .read() has to (1) interpret your request, (2) set the registers, (3) do an operating system interupt, (3) interpret the response... for EVERY SINGLE EENY WEENY CHARACTER... which in practice means you can't do an usable java port of directX... which is a shame really.
But is does mean that you can (almost) write a webapp which is completely portable across platforms (with zero code change).

Which VOD programs are really "free"?

I need more information on what is actually "free" (or more accurately, included). I have the Ultimate package, so I have the premiums, and in fact just about everything anyone could want. But I also got 2 DVRs, and I'm wondering if I even need them, what with VOD. For example, if I want to catch up on "The Daily Show", is that included/free? What about "Mad Men"? If I want to catch up on the first 3 seasons, is that included/free? I'm asking because when I look at "My rentals", it shows an episode of TDS that I watched yesterday, but I am showing no purchases. Can anyone clarify this?

Very hard to say.
When browsing be sure to look at the group that says free. And look at premium channels you subscribe to.
But also make sure you have purchases locked with a password (its under parental controls). That way you will get a warning if you searched or otherwise came upon a VOD that is not free, and select it thinking its free.

Not able to install Logic on mac with OSX. 10.8.2. Error message: Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported. I have logic studio 8 software purchased in 2007 and upgraded with logic studio 9 (purchased in 2009)

After an earlier attempt to move Logic from my other mac (OSX 10.6.8) with the migration assistant to my new mac with OSX 10.8.2. I've re-started the whole start up process by erasing the hard drive from the new machine and build it up from scratch. After a new "out of the box" start, I decided to install LOGIC from my disks : starting with my 2007 package Logic Studio 8 and upgrading with my Logic 9 package from 2009. When trying to start to install 2008 I got the error message : Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported.
What does this mean? HOw do I get this working under 10.8.2 as it works flawlessly under OSX 10.6.8. For sure I didn't buy a new machine to have OSX 10.8.2 but I suspect this is the roadblock to installing my logic package.

I completely lost the thread (I actually got confused between you and another poster on a another forum that was asking the same basic question) and somehow ended up thinking you were trying to install on a PPC Mac
My apologies and please ingnore those parts of my last post relating to the PPC Macs...
You have an Intel Mac and therefore Logic Studio 2 Boxed Upgrade set should install/run on your Mac without issue. As I said earlier.. you do not need to try and install from the original Logic Studio 1 /Logic 8 Boxed set...(It won't work anyhow because you have an Intel Mac and that version had a PPC installer) but just install from the Logic Studio 2 / Logic Pro 9 Upgrade Boxed setof DVDs instead...
Have you tried the "Make Disk Image" solution I gave earlier? That normnally works under such circumstances as what you are describing can happen when your DVD drive cannot read the DVDs correctly... I have had this situation myself where one drive read them okay and another failed to do so for whatever reason. Making and then installing from Disk images of those exact same disks resolved the issue for me...
You can try to reinstall directly from the DVDs of course though under some circumstances it may not allow you to reinstall Logic Pro itself if that part of the original installation attempt was successful... in which case you can also try this... (It's probably the easiest method if Logic 9 was already installed and present in your Apps Folder)
If the Logic Pro App is in your applications folder..
Run Software Updates to update Logic Pro to a version that will run under 10.8.2 (The initially installed version of Logic will not)
Run Logic
Go to the menu bar in Logic and select Logic Pro/Install Additional Content and select all content in there..
This content is basically exactly the same as what is stored on the remaining DVDs of the boxed set so you might not need to use the rest of the DVDs to install from but download it all instead from Apple Servers...

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

How can I delete the update installation files? Or which files are useless and safe to delete?

ThinkVantage System Update application will find the appropriate updates, download them and install them. This is convenient. But when it finishes the updates, it will not clean the installation files it has downloaded, which I think are not useful any more since the update installation is completed, right?
I think the update appliction stores the downloaded files in the folder: C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\ , this folder of mine is over 1.32GB big now. But I just don't know which files and subfolders in it are safe to delete.
Or rather, the preload system occupies a large space on the disk. Which files are no longer used and safe to delete?
Would any experts help with this? Thank you very much!

I've been experimenting. Now I figure it out. Automatic System Update downloads and stores files in C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\ Sessions\, and in Sessions' subfolders, all files are not used once update is completed except those ending with .xml. Thus those unnacessary files are safe to delete.
This is what I find out so far.
Continuing to experiment.

How to see which programs are attached to which desktop?

I have used the option to attache software programs to different desktops in Mountain Lion. When I hava not used a specific program in a while and then need to, I cannot always remember which desktop I anchored it to. I know I can go to the launch and click on it there, but having it attached to a desktop, it seems like I should be able to find it that way. Is there a way to quickly see which one it is attached to without opening the app from the app launchpad or opening the app folder? I want to be able to just click to the desktop. In Tiger I think, we could click on spaces in the menu bar and see a list. Just wondering if there is a quick way in Mountain lion that I'm not aware of.

Hi, thanks for your reply, I am using mission control right now, I was just hoping there was a way that is similar to spaces in the toolbar.. and I'm guessing some of it is habit with how we think about it.
I realize why I was wondering this today. I had mail open and then I opened imessage and it opened on top of mail, which told me I did not have it anchored to any specific desktop. So I was trying to decide which one to attach it to and realized I did not know how to tell which ones already had something anchored to it. If they are open, I could see by mission control. But I did not want to open everything to see where it was anchored. I rememberd being able to click on spaces in tiger and I could see the list. So I hoped ML would have some place to see the same info.

Where can I find info on what all the programs are that are pre-installed with a new Lenovo? And how can I uninstall them, if I want to completely get rid of them?

I would recommend do not uninstall all the programs, especially Thinkvantage.
Pc Doctor is Lenovo´s system checker tool. Leave it.
McAfee should be a trial version, if you don´t have purchased it with your machine. (Antivir, AVG are good and free solutions for private use.
Agilix Gobinder seems a e-learning solution. May you have bought a students version?
Skype should be clear, don´t know if it will be usefull to you.

Possible to tell which programs are accessing the internet? Bandwidth?

I seem to have intermittent, severely limited access to the internet at times.
Is it possible to tell if a particular program running in the background is either downloading or scanning or "online" in some manner...?
Is it possible on a Mac to see how much bandwidth, memory, cpu cycles, etc. particular programs are taking...in a window similar to that which opens on a PC after pressing CTRLALTDEL ?
