Which Mac Book Pro is for me?

Hello, as I learn a bit at a time here by asking one question at a time.  I have always been a PC user and I am looking to switch.  Last week I bought a $1000 PC with windows 8 and after two days I sent it back as it was to hard to be without a real desktop and tiles are not for me.  So I thought if I have to learn something new it should be a Mac.
I think the Air is a bit too small (in size for my needs) and I want a SS drive for speed.  I use a computer for e-mail, my eBay business and major photo cropping and editing plus surfing.  I do not play any games at all.  I like the Apple quality and think that if anyone drops $1000 plus on a computer it should not be made from cheap plastic.  I also have a few Windows programs that I need to use and learned that I can set aside a part of the hard drive for windows programs and was told about boot camp.  Do I have to buy and install the full windows version for the windows part of the hard drive?  Lots of questions and I wish there was an online tutorial to teach me how to do basic things with a Mac.
Lastly how come most Mac book pro's do not come with a CD drive?  I saw that I could buy one for $90 or so for an external drive.

On a Core Duo Mac, none. Lion and newer require at least a Core 2 Duo or Xeon CPU.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
If your computer isn't compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.        Computer Compatibility - Lion
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

You can also check which applications are PowerPC by going to the  menu, select About this Mac, click on More info…, then click System Report and select Software/Applications.

Yes but you have to qualify. Which I'm not sure a 17 year old could do.

  • Making the switch to Apple...but which Mac Book Pro? 13" or 15"?

First of all I would like to apologise for going over some old ground, but I am really stuck as to which Mac Book Pro I should buy, so I would really value your opinions.
I will be using the laptop at home, and on the road. As well as the usual emailing, surfing the net, etc, etc, I also want to do some basic editing on FCE, using both SD & HD footage. I already own a 26" HD Benq monitor, and would connect the laptop to that, so screen size is not really an issue.
My worry is that the 13" MCB may be limited in what it can handle, and 2 years down the line, I will find I am restricted in what I can with it.
I know you can’t fully future proof technology but does it make more sense to spend that bit more on a 15” model, getting 2 graphics cards, and the option to expand memory and the hard drive at a later date?
If anyone edits HD footage on the 13" MCB, then I would really like to hear your experiences.
    Thanks in advance
    Stu

I use the 13" (you can see my specs down below) and I have no problem in what I do, I ocasionally use some pro apps like Aperture 3 and Modo and it handles it just fine. However if I was you I'd wait on buying a MBP atm cause an update should be just around the corner. There is only limited MBP's in stock in international stores and there saying there not getting anymore in.
There is of course a limit to what this little computer can handle, but I think you should be just fine with this or the higher end 13" if you really want to be sure.

  • What about my software which is in my old mac book pro like for instance parallels can I transfer this software to a new mak book pro that I want to buy ??

What about my existing software like parallels on my old mac book pro when I want to use that software on a new mac book pro I am ready to buy ???

Your new MacBook Pro won't run PPC programs. For Parallels you need to update to the latest version 7.

  • Which Mac book pro??

Hi Guys and Happy new Year!!!
I was wondering if I could get some advice??
I have a an IMac I7 27inch for home use (simple stuff really, no gaming although possibly x flight thing?)
Anyway I’m in the market for an apple laptop.
I have decided no to go with the air but with the mac book pro.
I’m really getting stuck on the old type and the retina.
I seem to be led towards the old version due to the disk drive and I can realistically remove that at a later date and add an additional ssd (they appear quite cheap) and additionally boost the ram to 16gm, That  will be more than enough for me. The retina is not a big issue, and the Ethernet may come in handy.  With those upgrades it sounds fairly future proof?
I will be running winds 7 with parallels and office, etc. The disc drive speed is not an issue as I will eventually upgrade it. Problems seem to be that you cannot upgrade the retina so you got what you got?
I’ve hears the screen is crap on the older version with reflection it didn’t seems problem for me but apple have got the lighting down to a tee in their shops (quaint British term!).
Could you please give me some advice as I’m getting little bogged down at the moment with this. Additionally can I just mirror over to the laptop my whole desktop and programmed??
Kind regards and happy holidays wherever you are.
    David
PS I thought of getting one on eBay but with student discount and 40(£) for full 3-year mac cover it’s not worth it. Luckily we also have an additional consumer bonus being we can get repairs up to 6 years in the UK and Ireland. Sorry guys across the water!

You are correct that the non retina can be upgraded where as the retina cannot (maybe with the storage it will be).  The question that you really should address is the display.  Look at them side by side and determine which one suits you best.
Personally the best display option is no longer available, ie; the anti-glare.  But that is just my opinion and in the end your  opinion is the one that counts.
    Ciao.

  • Mac book pro restarts for no reason, while i'm working!

    here's the story:
    mac book pro
    2.0ghz dual core intel
    2 gigs RAM
    10.4.10
the whole thing started when i began playing call of duty 2 on the MBP, as it got much better frame rates than my dual 2.5 G5..... when i play call of duty 2 at least once per day, or a few times a week, the entire computer will just restart, in the middle of playing!
i thought it had to do with overheating, so i bought one of those fans for under the laptop.. but it didn't seem to help... because sometimes it would restart after having only been on for 5 minutes and playing COD2 for 30 seconds... never having a chance to heat up.
so i've continued along like this.. sometimes i can play for 2 hours, sometimes only 10 minutes.. and the whole machine just restarts..
it's one **** of a COD2 bug, so bad that it forces your computer to power off and on again... but i've found not a single person having this problem with COD2...
so, the other day, i'm at a hotel.. sitting in bed, the MBP is on the desk.. some apps are open.. likely Mail and Safari.. but it's not doing much.. and the computer restarts!
then again the other day i was working in Excel and the machine restarted...
i have no idea what's going on.. if it's a hardware problem, or a software problem... i'm going to:
    1. reformat the whole machine and reinstall the system (and NOT install bootcamp/XP, although it's probably not hurting anything)
    2. run for a while WITHOUT my extra (3rd party) RAM
i use my machine in some very critical situations (live music performance) and cannot have a restart happen in the middle of a concert.
if anyone has any clue as to why this is happening, please let me know. i've seen a few similar stories as this on this forum, but nothing exactly.
    thank you

ok Rebis i think this appears to fix your problem , not sure though.. they say just to reinstall mac os X , back up your stuff and format the drive, reinstall the os. In my case , it just reboots by itself , no grey screen , nothing, keeps rebooting and rebooting sometimes. Ran apple hardware test, sry dont remember error # , but it said video controller error.
I hope Taylor posts again to see if his got fixed, cause it seems his problem and mine are really alike if not the same.

  • Is Mac book pro useful for Video Editing and VFX Work?

Hi Apple Team and Final Cut Pro Team,
I am Video Editor and Motion Graphic Artist. I do a lot of Video Editing work and I have to spend hours sitting in front of my Desktop and this is getting so hectic for me. So I'm thinking of buying a Mac book Pro. But before spending that much bucks, I need to be sure that I'm going for the best option available. below is the configuration I am planning to buy. Kindly suggest me whether this is the best option or not. If not, then Please suggest me your options.
    Configuration:-
    Screen:- 15.4 Inch retina display
Processor:-  2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache
    Ram:- 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory
Graphic Card:- NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching

I think a laptop is the best choice of all except when you need more power than you can get in a laptop. Even then "Both" is a great choice. In this instance, this laptop is more powerful than the largest Mac Mini that exists today, a great choice. You can't carry around an iMac or Mac Mini. The Macbook Pro Retina is the best thing out there. Again, except when your needs are greater than it can provide.
Of course a good laptop can cost as much as a Mac Pro. They are fairly cost effective though when matched to a Mac Mini or iMac, although I did get my mini for under a thousand dollars with everything except monitors and external drive.. That Macbook Pro he's got is about $2,000..
All a laptop is is a Mac Mini with it's own screen. So you get the best of both worlds, plus portability. Add monitors and mouse and keyboards and touchpad and external drives when you choose, or simply walk or drive away with your computer in your hand anywhere you go.  Try that with a Mini. A great advantage.
Location stuff.. etc etc etc. Talk about chairs and whatnot, I like to lay in bed on my back with my laptop on my belly. Super relaxing. I too, get tired of sitting in that chair all the time. I don't care how good it is. I'm a truck driver. I know all about sitting for hours on end. It becomes torture.
    Both computers, that's the ticket.
All of them if we're rich enough.
$10,000 for a million dollars worth of equipment.
The price of a good used car. Fantastic machines.
On a side note, life without eating and drinking and ingesting stimulant drugs is a great life!
Far and away more better than the stimulants ever could provide!!! Far, far superior. In all ways..

  • Which mac book is convenient for network engineers mainly working on installing and designing network and call centers???

i need some help picking the suitable machine for network architect and installation engineers , will the mac air with 2.0 processor and 8 Gb RAM do the job, or mac pro is the best option ?

  • Is a Mac Book Pro adequate for editing?

I have always used a tower but find myself needing additional mobility and I am going to have to choose one vs the other. If a book won't cut it for video editing I am just going to stick with a tower model.
    Anyone want to weigh in?

I prefer smaller drives, so I can keep track of all my projects - frequently I have to give the drive over to the after effects/3D guys, so I have three GDrive 500mb 7200rpm mini's
As long as the drive is fast enough (7200) and has FW800, you should be fine.

  • Is the mac book pro good for gaming?

Is it good for heavy minecraft work? And which core should I get?
    Thanks

Minecraft does not have heavy system requirements, so any of the current models will play minecraft just fine. Either the Core i5 or Core i7 will do for what Minecraft requires, so if you are only interested in Minecraft then I'd go for whatever fits your best price (the 15-inch will ultimately do better than the 13 inch because of the dedicated graphics card). If you are looking to extend beyond Minecraft and do heavy graphics processing in games or otherwise, then go for the Core i7 and higher quality dedicated graphics card.

  • ?s about RAM, Adobe CS3, which Mac Book Pro should I purchase?

I have not yet purchased my MBP, but am curious about the performance of the Adobe CS3 on a 256 MBP. I am trashing my pc for a Mac and want to get the right one for my classes! Adobe CS3 made my computer completely shut down even when I upgraded the ram! It was horrible! I have seen some of yall have upgraded your MBP's to 3 or 4GB. Is this possible with the 256 MBP or do I need to purchase the 512 in order to be able to upgrade the RAM that high? If yall could help me out with this one, that would be awesome. Obviously, I'd rather spend less money and get the 256 and then order the extra RAM to install. Do you purchase the RAM from Apple and does anyone know how much they cost? I've never owned a MAC and haven't used one in probably 8 years! Thanks for your help!

I cant help you on the CS3 problem, but when I bought my MBP I asked about RAM and I'll pass on the same info to you: -
    1) MBP take a maxiumum of 4GB ram and comes with 2 * 1GB RAM sticks as standard.
    2) DONT BUY YOUR RAM FROM APPLE! I was warned about this, the main reason being the price tag! You can buy the same type of RAM direct from I think it's Crucial and save about £200ish. You'll need two * 2GB sticks.
The best bet is to go into an Apple store and have a look at the models on offer before making your choice.
    I hope this helps.
