Which Mac computers can boot into Mac OS 9?

Hi,
I'm interested in owning a computer which allows me to boot and work in Mac OS 9. I'm aware of the Mac OS X Classic environment, but am really interested in booting in 9. As a secondary consideration, I also want one which can run Mac OS 10.3.9. Which models allow this? Is there a tech. spec. sheet on Apple's website? Newer, Mac OS X-supporting models preferred.

I have the dual 1GHz MDD, OS9 loves it.
There's also PowerBook G4's. You'll want a Titanium PBG4. As a rule, Titanium PBG4's are OS9 bootable, and Aluminium PBG4's are OSX boot only. They're easily identified, Titaniums have all the ports on the back, Aluminiums have the ports down both sides. The Titanium PowerBook G4's topped out at 1GHz. Be careful, there are Alumnium PBG4's at 1GHz (remember, you want ports on the back, not the side).
There's also some G4 iMacs and eMacs, both fast under OS9 and OSX 10.3, but if you tried Tiger or Leopard on them things might start to slow down. Others, who own these macs, might be able to clarify.
I've been waiting 6 weeks for my new Mac Pro to replace my MDD. Unfortunately, I'm not selling it. It's SO good, I'm keeping it as a web server, file server and iTunes server. So get the MDD if you can.

Mac Pro 2006 boots into OS fine but graphics freezes on grey apple logo

When I boot my Mac Pro it boots into Mac OS X fine. I can access it remotely and all seems fine however the monitor only displays the grey apple with the whit background. I know the graphics card isnt over heating because I have removed any dirt/dust and had additional fans blowing the card and it is running cool.
does this mean the graphics card is dead? if so what can i replace it with as the machine is now 5 years old?

That last one is not a good sign. Kernel panic when starting from an installer DVD either mean you are using an installer version that cannot boot your model or there's a hardware problem.
I'm thinking your original thought may be valid. It would be provable if you had another GPU to try, but if you don't then I suppose you should replace the one you have. Of those available the ATI 5770 is an excellent replacement choice for both performance and cost unless you want to look for a different replacement card on eBay.

IMac running 10.6... I can boot into XP no problem, but Mac partition and Boot CD/DVDs will not go

Have an iMac running 10.6... I can boot into XP no problem, but although the mac partition shows up at (alt key) startup, it just spins for about 5 minutes then restarts. Also, it will not boot from any bootable CD/DVD at all (same spin cycle occurs). Tried about every trick I could research. No warning at all regarding this. Everything was going just peachy then pow... out of nowhere she won't boot. Any ideas

I sugggest you backup the windows xp and start from scratch. This means your disks partition is MBR and not GUID so the mac partitions cant effectively communicate with the EFI partition (bios) and boot.
So boot up using ur mac DVD.
Choose ur language
at the top of the screen, go to tools and open disk utility
highlight your hard drive and hit the partition tab. select 1 partition and make sure its set to format it as GUID and mac HFS+ file system
Reinstall mac os x do all ur updates
use boot camp utility to make a new windows xp partition and installation.
then to select between os's hold down option during startup

Macbook pro will not boot into Mac OSX

When i got my MacBook Pro it would boot into Mac OSX fine. Now it wont even give me the option and will only let me boot into Windows which i have running through bootcamp. I have tried reinstalling MacOSX but my OSX installion DVD will not get recognised and i cannot boot off it either. I have tried using 2 other discs still with the same issue. The confusing thing is that the CD/DVD drive works fine and the MacOSx discs work fine in other macs as i have tried it in my brothers machine.

I don't think that the laptop even has Mac installed anymore becuase in an attempt to reinstall Mac the partition was formatted. And I can't boot of the disc becuase it just ejects by itself after a few seconds in the drive.

How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows via Bootcamp? I tried using MacDrive but it's not supported for Vista 64-bit edition. Is there another program out there that I can use? I just want to be able to access my music that's on Leopard while in Vista. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to move the music on the Windows side since Leopard will be able to read and play the music from the mounted Windows drive (Leopard will not be able write anything to the Windows NTFS partition).
In your case it won't work the other way around.

Cannot boot into Mac OS X after partitioning in Windows

My Mac is a Macbook Pro 17", I got it from my friend (no original disc).
So after upgrading it to Mavericks (I was unable to install Windows using Boot camp of 10.6.8), Boot Camp successfully let me install Windows 8.1 Pro (x64).
However, after installing, whenever I install the Software Support in Windows, Windows always show Blue screen after showing the logo. I was able to restore Windows back. Therefore, I am now using Windows with only basic components, no Boot Camp driver.
The problem is that, I shrink the Boot Camp partition, and create another NTFS partition. Now, I cannot boot into Mac OS anymore. Holding Command + Option + R does nothing, holding Option while startup shows a hard drive named Windows (instead of Mac HD).
Can I make the Mac bootable again? And if possible, is there any available driver for Windows 8.1?

At startup, hold down the Option Key (alt) to choose between Mac OS X and Windows.
To select what system you want to boot into by default:
- when in Windows go to the Control Panel ->BootCamp ->Installed Startup Disks
- when in Mac OS X go to System Preferences->Startup disk.

Power Mac G4 Wont boot in Mac Os X 10.3.9

My mac won't boot in mac os x 10.3.9 it gets almost to the login screen then goes blue. I can't insert a disk because the optical drive is broken. I have an external drive but when i boot a disk it has the os X spin wheel but it has a picture of a folder ripped in half. The computer boots in System 9.2 fine but won't boot in 10.3.9.

Sounds like you have a PowerBook, not a desktop machine. You've landed in the PowerMac G4 forums for late-model desktop machines like the picture under my name at the left. Can't boot into Mac OS after Windows install via Bootcamp

Hello.
Last night I installed Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro early 2011 via Bootcamp.After some major complications I was able to finally install Windows 7 and boot into it. Now I can't boot back into my "Macintosh HD" partition, it shows a no entry sign.
Hard Disk : 320GB Internal Sata
Partitions : 3 -> Mac, Bootcamp and 10.8 Recovery Partition
The good part is that I can still access the Mac OS partition in Windows and Windows is working perfectly fine. As a matter of fact right now I'm on the bootcamped windows.
I have a full time machine backup but still I am looking for a way to solve this without formatting the HDD.
Things I have tried:
1. Resetting NVRAM and PRAM
2. Booting into 10.8 recovery partition and running DU.
SMART Status : Verified
"Macintosh HD" grayed and Not Mounted
Successful Verify Permissions (Twice)
Is there a way to solve this? Though the Mountain Lion partition shows when I press the Alt/option key on startup but I can't somehow boot into it.

Your problem is OS X is refusing to boot.
There is still a bootable volume on the Macintosh HD partition, it's just not working.
You can #8 Reinstall Just OS X while command r booted from the Recovery partition, as long as you don't use Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition, your files and programs remain.
Hook the computer via Ethernet cable to a router (or modem, power reset required) with a fast relaible internet connection, you will need your AppleID and password to reinstall OS X.

Can I ssh to a Mac that's booted into Safe Mode?

I'm needing to ssh to a Mac that's been booted into Safe Mode (I'm already able to ssh to it in normal boot mode, and I know how to boot it into Safe Mode from the command line, i.e. sudo nvram boot-args="-x", then sudo reboot).
I can't just test this for myself, as it has to work first time, otherwise I'll be locked out of the remote Mac. If ssh would still work in Safe Mode, the plan is to then ssh to it and issue the command to set it back to normal boot mode (with sudo nvram boot-args="") and then reboot... job done.
Ideally, but not too important, I could VNC to it in Safe Mode instead, but ssh would do fine.
Does anyone know (for sure!) please?
In case anyone wondered, I'm wanting to do the Safe Boot because I'm told it can cure an issue with Adobe CS apps freaking out and locking up, crashing etc. I want to try this over the w/e, and have no physical access to the Mac. I've already set it to power on later (via pmset) - something I do routinely.
I thought an answer to this would be easy to find, but after Googling I've drawn a blank. Can't find it in any Apple docs either.

(running Jaguar) from my G4 (running 10.4.2) using
secure shell but she doesn't have a password set up
on her computer. When I enter the ssh command in
Terminal, it asks for a password — I don't enter
anything and just hit the Return key. It returns with
a massage saying "Permission denied, please try
again." What can I do to log in w/o setting up her
machine with a password first?
If you want to use SSH securily I would suggest you disable password authenticaiton altogher. If you setup public key authentication it is more secure and better than using passwords anyway.

I tried disk utility, and I cant mount my mac hdd and when i run hardware test it says perfectly fine. What do I do ?

Please post the *full* output. The server terminated successfully suggests a problem with your xinitrc, so as ewaller requested, we'll need to see that - after you provided the actual output and error messages you are getting.

MBP no longer boots into Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks

After installing Mavericks on launch day and using it successfully for the past few days, my MBP stopped shutting down - system would freeze. I would have to turn it off by holding down the power switch.
I booted into Recovery mode to Repair Disk - process aborted with error saying it cannot be completed and I must reinstall Mac OS.
Now each time I boot I get a grey Apple screen with a progress bar...when the progress bar completes, the MBP turns itself off.
Does anyone have instructions for how I can return to using Mountain Lion / 10.8.5 until Apple has resolved all its technical issues with Mavericks?

My two cents-- I'm a fan of Red Giant and have a bunch of their products but Universe has been a dud in my opinion. Didn't upgrade to the premium version but kept it installed just to kick the tires and it's been a total headache. Finally uninstalled it.
May not be Red Giant's issue per se, but for whatever reason all my Adobe stuff runs better without it.

After a failed install of Ubuntu 10.10 via BootCamp (was unable to install due to it not picking my wireless keyboard up, I'm unable to get a wired keyboard) I ejected the install disc but I'm unable to boot back into Mac OS X. Holding down the Option key while it's starting up does not work. I also tried booting into Safe Mode, didn't work either. I'm currently on my mother's computer because I am unable to use my iMac. HOWEVER I AM ABLE TO GET INTO DISK UTIL AND REPAIRED MY HD AND RECOVERY HD HOWEVER THE OTHER IS STILL THERE AND WILL NOT LET ME ERASE IT. IT STATES IN INFO OF THE DRIVE "NOT ALLOW OWNERS TO TURN OFF...YES". I AM IN THE SAFARI BROWSER NOW AFTER LEAVING DISK UTIL. DISK UTIL READ MY HD IS FIXED AND OK AND WILL BOOT HOWEVER I AM SCARED IT WILL ONLY BOOT INTO WHATEVER THIS WEBKIT MAC OS X BASE IS.

That's Mt. Lion's Recovery volume which you could have used to erase the working volume and do a clean install of Mt. LIon. To get rid of it you may have to try to repartition the entire drive with Disk Utility.
Otherwise, reboot with the Command+R keys held down to boot into the Recovery volume. Once there run Disk Utility to again erase the working volume and then do an install of Mt. Lion. This method is much easier and quicker than doing it from the USB device.

Mac Pro can access other Macs but those same Macs cannot access the Mac Pro

Hello.
I have a highly annoying problem that goes as follows:
My (home) network consists of:
- 1 Mac Pro (e2008 - 10.5.6)
- 1 iMac (2008 - 10.5.6)
- 1 MacMini (2004 - 10.4.??)
- 1 MacBook Air (2008 - 10.5.6)
The internet connection is alive and well with no drops not that it truely matters here.
The setup is as follows:
- Linksys AM300 in half bridge mode connects to the
- Apple Airport Extreme Base station from which 1 cat6 cable runs to the
- Mac Pro
The other Macs connected to the Airport Extreme wirelessly.
The Mac Pro has its network settings setup correctly (in fact it used to work fine but then just stopped working) and I have also disabled all network settings, rebooted and reapplied the settings to no effect.
To clarify:
I (Mac Pro) can connect to all Macs in the network but all those macs can see me but not connect to me. Connecting via the Finder simply says "Connection Failed" and if I open the "Connect to server.." and enter the IP address of the Mac Pro it results in an error/failed connection also.
Any ideas to fix this would be highly appreciated.
PS: As of now, 19/03/2009, I have all software updates installed on all macs in the network.

Place the files you want to transfer on the Desktop
Click on the Finder or desktop to swtich to Finder, then Go > Computer, then double click on the boot drive, then on the Users folder.
Open the target User folder and inside is a Public folder > Drop Box, just drag and drop in there and the permissions change so that user can use the file.
