Which mac notebook is best for me?

Hello forum it's almost black friday and I'm a college student and what I'll be doing with the computer is your music, research papers, web browsing, netflix very little travel. I would like the computer to run fast and last me a while about 5 years. I'm debating the regular 13' inch pro with upgraded i7 and 8gb OR second tier 13 inch pro retina with i5 and last 13 inch air with upgraded i7 and 8gb ram. They are all about the same most and I know the differences between them. Its hard deciding which to buy?

If "high-end" games are your main interest, you don't
want the entry level Mini or the Mini Server because
the use the Intel HD3000 integrated graphics.
The only one with discrete graphics is the 2.5 GHz i5 or
the 2.7 GHz i7 option.  This may be able to handle what
you want but will defer to gamers comments on that.
Personally, I would go with the i7 as CPU performance is
always a good thing to have around and will also handle
video crunching better.
As far as RAM just go right to 8 gig, but buy it
from OWC or Newegg as Apple's is way over priced.

If your info is correct you need to first buy Snow Leopard from the Apple on-line store ($20) install and update to 10.6.8 and then buy Lion from the App Store for $20.

  • Which Mac Mini is best for Editing in Final Cut Pro X i5 or i7 ?

Hey guys plz suggest me a good mac mini machine for editing in Final Cut Pro X. Is there any difference in i5 mac mini or i7 in terms of rendering or editing, and what is the use of an SSD drive in terms of editing in mac mini either than its 5400rpm HD, or should i buy imac i5 with ssd ?
Lets see if i buy mac mini i5 with 16gb ram and a ssd drive,  Will it work better than mac mini i7 with 16gb ram but without ssd drive ?
So guys plzz suggest me the best mac specs for video editing
    Thanks in advance

    Your budget?
Take a look at this: http://www.barefeats.com/minivmp.html
The 2012 Quad-Core i7 Mac mini is a real contender when it comes to CPU power compared to our examples of a Quad-Core Mac Pro and Quad-Core iMac. We plan to add some other examples of Quad-Core desktop Macs (including a faster Mac mini) to these graphs in the days ahead but the point is made.
However, the GPU in the 2012 Quad-Core i7 Mac mini is weak in comparison to the Mac Pro (and iMac) as you can see from the "Heaven" graph.
That's going to affect its ability to handle advanced Pro Apps that make use of the GPU for certain types of effect rendering.
These apps include Apple's Final Cut Pro and Motion as well as Adobe's Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects.
The Mac mini's Intel HD 4000 GPU will also hamstring hard-core gamers.
The Mac mini is also weak in support of OpenCL as you can see from the "LuxMark" graph.
It is forced to render the model using only CPU while the iMac and Mac Pro GPUs are able to render the model.
Why does this matter? Because apps like Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Photoshop use OpenCL acceleration for rendering certain effects.

Even a Mac Pro (refurbished special 4-core 2.8 is $1819 and can be upgraded to more RAM, 4x4TB w/o going into Thunderbolt storage) and have multiple SSDs as the choice or need arises.)
Fusion drive + Thunderbolt but I think you are asking too much out of the mini. It is fine for a lot of uses.

  • Trying to decide which Mac Pro is best for me

    Hi-
It's high time I upgrade to a Mac Pro and I need to do so in a month or two.  I can't wait around for whatever new version of Mac Pro may come out in the Fall.
I am very confused as to whether an August 2010 Quad core 2.8 ghz or 3.2 ghz versus an August 2010 2.4 ghz 8 core is better for my needs.
I use my Mac for FCS and DVD compression.  I usually use iDVD.  My work is editing primarily for legal purposes- Mediation presentations, Day in the Life Documentaries and depositions.  There is not much use for things like Motion or other effects.  Right now I use Livetype for some animated titles.
I am sure, compared to what I have now, a Quad core's speed will make me pee my pants and would be perfect for my purposes.  My concern is what will continue to be supported over the next 3-4 years if I don't run out and buy a new computer until then.  Will newer software updates continue to work fine on a quad core or willa n 8 core be a requirement as Intel processors are de rigeur for software updates.
I'd appreciate your thoughts, Apple community.  Thanks!

Go back to page one of that MacRumors thread.
    Very complete with photos etc
It takes me a long time and work to wrap my head around details.
    You asked about 8-core performance.
I recommended the $2100 special and $600 cpu, you can then sell the original cpu for $300 and come out with $2495 for 6-core system that is 50% faster than what it was.
Allocate for RAM (4 x 4GB or 3 x 8GB), extra hard drives, eventually an SSD boot drive ($200) also.
RAM, drives, SSDs, they even do (very expensive$$$) processor "Turnkey" upgrades.

well im looking at the 15 inch non retina and the retina doesnt come with a superdrive, as ill be needing that to burn material straight from my laptop to cds. So that more or less rules out any of the retina display models. Its just the customizing i needed help unless you could suggest another model entirely!
You can add an Optical drive to the Retina models connected by USB. And it does not have to be the Apple branded (Not So) Superdrive. It can be any portable CD/DVD burner that connects by USB.
But in all honesty you can get a faster Windows PC notebook then any of the Mac notebooks for around 1/2 - 2/3 the cost for what you want to do with it.

  • Which imac would work best for Graphic Design?

I am a Graphic Designer, currently using Creative Suite 2 (soon to be upgraded to CS3) and I need a new Mac for home. A Powermac takes up too much space, so I'm thinking about an imac with a 24" monitor and I have a few questions for the experts:)
Which imac would work best for graphics?
Is the monitor acurate for Pantone color matching?
Is the 24"monitor on the imac clear and bright?
    Is Leopard a stable OS?
I also need an (inexpensive) color laser printer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks a bunch!
Suzi (Machead since the beginning of Mac history)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The 24" iMac uses a superior LCD panel to the 20" model and so is certainly better suited to your purposes. I don't know how badly having a piece of glass in front of the display would affect you as a designer though.
The display certainly is clear and bright. I use it on it's lowest brightness setting.
Leopard is stable but it's worth checking that drivers for any devices that you currently rely on are available. For example I have to go back to my 10.4.11 iMac G4 to use my scanner. Personally I can't get iCal to alarm in Leopard but that's a fairly minor gripe.
As this is the forum for much older iMacs I'd suggest re-posting in the Intel iMac forum and even Mac OS 10.5 Printing forums for better informed opinion:

If that's what you're using and it actually works, albeit slowly, I'd suggest taking The hatter's advice and go with the 6 core Mac Pro with  24GB of RAM and the 5870 video card. The RAM could come from here: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory#1333-memory

  • I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like excel, word etc. 13"

I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like  microsoft office products ...excel, word etc.  I am new to the apple world and have liked the idea of the MAC Book Pro 13" but really dont know if this is good enough or if the computer will soon crash?
    13-inch: 2.6GHz
    with Retina display
    Specifications
    2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    512GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)2

That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.
Good luck in making your decision!!

  • Which mac pc is good for iPad development in between mac mini or mac book pro

which mac pc is good for iPad development in between mac mini or mac book pro so give me details which is much more better for ios development

The best thing for iOS development is your imagination. Coming up with unique creative apps is what’s most important. I've had a mini since they first came out, and I think it's the best desktop around. However you may not want a desktop because you're more mobile when you work on apps. With the mini you can use a much bigger screen (I use a 80 inch) but the laptop has a slightly better processor (if you decide to pay extra for it). I'm learning app development also and a laptop would drive me crazy, but it's a personal choice, so you first need to decide where you are going to be while you're developing. If it’s at home or a office then the mini might be better. The mini and the macbook pro are both two incredible products. I don’t think you can make a wrong decision as far as which one handles app design better. They’re both great in that department.

  • Time for a new Mac - Whats the BEST for Aperture?

Its time for me to upgrade my box and while I have money to spend I don't want to break the bank. This computer is just for Aperture!!! Which is the best graphic card(s), do I need 16 gigs of memory, is two quads worth the money? If I put RAID in can I get by with just 2 hard drives or do I need 4 for speed? If I buy the best and most of everything the box and displays comes to $14,000. Do I have to spend that much? $8000 is more realistic. What do you suggest?
    TIA
    Chris

Best is to wait until after Mac Expo SF in 2 weeks, then decide which Mac Pro is best. Aperture demands heavy hardware so the highest end MP will be "best" but some middle range model or even an older model may be most cost effective while still very good. Wait.
Today 2 drives in a RAID 0 array probably saturates a MP as far as throughput is concerned, but we need to wait and see what new MPs, cards, etc. are before configuring an optimum Aperture box. Doing exactly that homework is much of what I will be doing at Mac Expo.

  • Which battery was the best for endurance for Satellite A100-999

    Hi
I have just been given an A100-999 and I wanted to know which battery was the best for endurance.
From what I have seen it is the pa3400u-1brs but i just wanted confirmation as I am planning to buy it in Japan as it is probably cheaper.
Also, is there any information on how long this battery lasts?
    thanks

    Hi there,
this battery would fit for your machine 100%. I have the same one in almost the same machine. Dont worry, just buy it.

I am considering getting an iphone... I do not care about getting the "latest gadget", but have all apple products and would love the convenience of the calendar, music, camera, etc... on my phone. Which model is the best for me to get?
Is it really worth it for the newest (and most expensive) model, or is the 3G sufficient for regular use? or is the 4 now the most basic model I should invest in? or do I really have to get the 4S?

I Recommend the iPad Mini Retina, it's not to big, and not to small. It has the speed of the iPad Air due to it having the same 64 Bit chips. ( And it's a lot cheaper!!) I have one myself and it's perfect for my school work!

i,m looking for handsfree for iphone 4s, which one is the best for it

I really like the Plantronics Voyager Pro bluetooth headset.  I have tried a lot of the ones on the market and the Plantronics one that I now use has - a long battery life, excellent sound quality and very low background noise. I occasionally use it when in a vehicle (although I do try to avoid doing this) and people on the other end of the line don't even realise that I am in a car.
