Which Mac Notebook should I get?

Im a first year student in college, going in this fall. I plan on doing regular school work, multitasking, and from time to time some basic photo and video editing. Portability would be nice, but it isnt a deciding factor. Ii need a machine that can handle some basic programming apps (matlab, ect.) as well,  and daily use wihtout sacrificing the speed and not overheating the computer either. I was looking into the new retina macbook, and I can afford it but is it worth the price? I would be getting the base model with the 256gb HD and 8gb RAM, which I dont necessarily think the HD would be an issue capacity wise, and Im not sure about the RAM but again I dont think I would be running vigorous programs which would require more RAM.
Any advice?

The general answer is buy what your budget can afford. For the new Retina display money, you'd be paying a premium for the SSD and display, but it's an extremely capable machine. So are the other MacBook Pros. They may not be quite as fast, but they are still very capable machines and are more expandable than the Retina model or the MacBook Air.
If you plan on using it outside regularly or in rooms with a lot of windows, the retina model supposed is vastly improved over the last generation MBP glossy screens. But the regular MacBook Pros offer non-glossy screen options (for extra $) - at least they did a few weeks ago. The retina model doesn't have a CD drive, while the standard MBPs do.
I'm still using a 2006 MacBook Pro with a faster HD and added RAM, and it's still a capable machine. At 1.83 GHZ it still does everything well, so you can consider the MacBook Air too, since it's about the same GHZ as mine and a much newer faster processor.
I didn't hear anythingbthatbyou intended to do with it that any of their laptops wouldn't do well. In general, the more you pay, the longer you'll be able to use it before it becomes obsolete, so a lot of the extra cost washes out because you delay buying another computer and the yearly effective cost is similar.

  • Which mac mini should I get to setup osx server

    Hello!
I run a small development team though we are fairly new at working together and we're trying to setup an efficient development environment for us.  I've recently stumbled on to 'continuous integration' and had heard that a Mac Mini server can go a long way toward reaching that goal.
Keep in mind, though we're iOS developers and are technologically competent, none of us have server admin experience.
Unfortunately the latest update to Mac Mini does not have a server model.  That leads me to the following questions:
    1) Should I purchase an older mac mini that is already setup as a server?  (aka, Mac mIni server)
    2) Should I purchase one of the newer models and install OSX Server myself?  I heard it's cheap off the Mac App store, so price is not a concern, but I'm not sure what the tradeoffs are of getting one that is already a supposed server, and setting one up myself as a server.
    3) If I do purchase one of the three newer models, how do I know which one I need to support our environment?  Lower cost is obviously better, but I don't want to short change ourselves on the required power.  We would use the server mostly for file sharing, collaborating, code repos, CI, etc.  We have a website that we host on Godaddy and I would move it to our server if I could, but this is low on the priority list.
I'm also open to options such as, do none of the above and wait for a new Mac mini server model to come out, but I'm anxious and want to get started
Thanks so much for your help and advice!
    Frankie

A server model is NOTHING but a 2nd 2.5" HD and the OSX Server APP
buy a quad core mini (on sale now at best buy), and purchase a 1TB Hitachi ($65) 7200RPM HD off ebay
and purchase the server APP from the APP STORE.
OR, just find a new or used server model 2012 Mini
dont even think about fooling with the new 2014 Mini.   Lost cause.
I use godaddy as well, and ergo have NO need for a Mini server, even though I own 4 Mac Minis.
godaddy is cheaper and easier ......you should possibly consider the same

  • Which mac mini should i go for: the one with AMD graphic card or Intel. I meanly going to use it for hometheater and HD movies.

which mac mini should i go for: the one with AMD graphic card or Intel. I meanly going to use this for hometheater and HD movies.

Intel HD 3000 graphics card can easily handle HD movies up to 1080p. But if you are looking at higher resolutions possibly 4k or 8k that are being released this summer in new TV's, I would go with the AMD card. The AMD card would be good for video and picture applications and also games. But if this is strictly to power your 1080p home theater setup then the choice is obviously the Intel HD 3000.

  • What kind of Mac configuration should I get for video editing

I have been using after effects and premiere pro a lot and has been experiencing lots off lag, even when I am using the Internet. What Mac configuration should I get for this type of editing?

When I was doing more video editing, two things mattered ..... a fast CPU and lots of memory. Having the horsepower to handle activities like rendering really helps.
On lag, while it certainly can be application-driven, you might look over this FAQ for some ideas.
If you haven't already, you might also ask in the FCP dicussion here.

  • Brand new Mac customer-should I get Lion?

    Hi everyone,
I'm writing because I'm looking for support.  I just recently bought my first iMac (it was between this or a Mini) after having my 4th PC die on me in 10 years.  While I already have the machine ordered I have been doing extensive research on what to expect with my purchase and one of the things I have been reading has been some compatability issues with Lion OS.  After having gone through several Windows upgrades myself I am nervous to be jumping into a new format all together only to find that Apple is going through an update to their OS (perfect timing I suppose).  That being said:
I apparently am eligible for the FREE upgrade to Lion with my iMac purchase.  Should I get it or stay with Snow Leopard?
I have the newest iMac out there that is the base model but includes 4GB of RAM and AMD 6750M graphics card.
I'm also considering the newest generation Time Capsule (2TB).  Will that work okay with Lion as well?
Also, last question, since I haven't received the Mac yet I want to make sure I got an okay model.  I was trying to pick what appeared to be middle of the road between a Mac Mini and the iMac line.  I'm not expecting to get it until tomorrow but am sure I can trade an unopened computer if  that's best.  Because I had a 23 inch monitor and keyboard/mouse with my former PC I had a hard time choosing.
Thanks for answering any or all of my questions.  Sorry if this message has the new guy feel.

Almost certainly if you purchased your iMac directly from Apple it will come with Lion on it already so you won't need to upgrade.
Time Capsule will work fine with Lion.
If you bought directly from Apple you have 14 days to return the computer, so if you are not happy for any reason they will refund your money. At that point you can decide if you want a different model or not.
I'm sure your experience will be a good one so don't worry. Reading in these forums sometimes can jade a new user, however please remember these are technical help forums that people come to when they're having issues and are not representative of the general population.

Im 14 and i need a new computer. Mostly i use my computer for browsing, email, twitter, listening music, youtube and sometimes gaming. Hi Jessica,
I think that the deciding factor concerning which size to get would be how you intend to use it.  People who tote their macbooks around alot, such as sales people or executives (road warriors) and also students who need to take their computers to school, surely would benefit from the smaller 11inch version.  In your case, if you are going to use it in a comfortable environment, such as in bed, or on the sofa, the larger 13inch model would be more beneficial, especially if you watch videos and play games fairly often.  Even if you lug it around a little, to Starbucks or a friends house, or take it with you on vacation once in a while, I feel the larger model would be suitable for you.

  • Which Mac mini should I buy ?

    Hi,
Please I'm confuse and I can't make a decision, Which Mac mini is good for me:
Note that I'll used the new mac for IT development.
    2012 Mac Mini ( $799 on Amazon )
2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz) with 6MB L3 cache
    4 GB (two 2GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory
    1 TB (5400-rpm) hard drive
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    Or
    2014 Mac Mini ( $669 on Amazon )
    2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    1TB (5400-rpm) hard drive
    8GB of 1600MHz LPDDR3 memory
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Mac OS X Yosemite
Is there a big different between Intel HD Graphics 4000 & Intel Iris Graphics ?
Please help me to take a right decision.
    Thanks in advance
    Abdusalam

I was decided to buy the Mac mini 2014, but I found the 2012 one on amazon
What makes me confuse is that with 2012 I can upgrade the RAM easily to 16 GB in future and I'll get Quad Core i7
The only different is the Intel Iris Graphics, Is it worth to discard i7 Quad core and the ability to upgrade RAM by my self ?

  • Which IPad model should I get?

    Hi,
I am considering buying an IPad for school and I don't know what to get. I need help choosing which one I should get.
I have concerns for these things:
~ 3g or Wifi only? I have no Internet at home and no other sources for Internet. I currently go to a family members house to use Wifi.
~ IPad or IPad 2? I do not know which one is better. I am currently leaning towards the IPad 2, but I would like a second opinion.
~ 16gb, 32gb, or 64gb? I only put apps, a few TV shows, music, voice memos, and notes currently on my iPod touch (32gb).
~ Where should I get it? Should I buy it over the Internet or in-store? If I buy it from the Internet, I will most likely buy it from the Apple Store.
~ Can you engrave it in a store? Could an IPad be engraved when you buy it from a store and then be shipped to you?
--thank you for trying to answer these questions!

  • Which MacBook Air should I get? 13 inch or 11 inch

I want a MacBook Air for Reaktor 5, uploading videos to YouTube with iMovie, stuff I cannot do on my iPad, games (Assassins Creed, Bioshock), web browsing, etc. Should I get the Refurbished MacBook Air 11 inch 128gb SSD 4gb RAM intel core i7 2.0 ghz, or refurbished Macbook Air 13 inch 256gb SSD 4gb RAM intel core i5 1.8ghz. I am 12 years old so I need something more portable than the MacBook Pros.

If you can afford, buy a new MB Air 13-inch with 256 GB storage and 8GB RAM.
Otherwise go for "refurbished Macbook Air 13 inch 256gb SSD 4gb RAM intel core i5 1.8ghz".

  • Which mac notebook is required as a start to develop iphone apps?

I would like to learn how to write iphone and ipad apps but need to purchase a mac first. What is the minimum mac notebook that will work for this? Do I need to buy the mac pro or will a mac air suffice?

Adding to what Linc Davis says above, you can also use an additional display to make an "Extended Desktop" for more space on the screen. Windows can be moved freely between displays and can even be split across displays.
You just need to register as a developer and "sign" the agrrement, then download Developer Tools and install.

  • Which Mac Notebook?  Thanks.

I'm setting up a recording studio using Garageband. The studio will be used to produce a financial radio show where I'll be recording about 5 tracks simultaneously. (3 vocal mics, one phone line, and some soundbyte samples.) Each "session" will be 30 minutes to 45 minutes long and I'll be using a Presonous pt-10 interface. With all that in mind, what is the cheapest Mac Notebook I could purchase to accomplish the task? (with what kind of processor, hard drive space, etc?) Finally, if you strongly suggest another computer that isn't the cheapest option, please explain why it's worth the extra money. Thank you!

Ask in the Garageband discussion forum.

  • Changing from PC to Mac--which PS Elements should I get?

I have been using PSE 7 on my pc, and it has done everything I need it to do, EXCEPT for including the llight blue guidelines that allow me to easily line up images. I have Wiindows 7 installed on my new iMac, and I suppose I could move PSE 7 from my pc to the mac, and work in Windows. But I think it's time for me to get the Mac version of PSE.
As I said, the only feature I need beyond what PSE 7 has is blue guidelines. If I get PSE 8 for the Mac, do you think this is all i need? Or is there another reason to get a more recent release?
    Thank you.

You can still purchase PSE8 and other versions online from sites like Amazon however Adobe no longer provides support for those versions. In any case the price difference is small compared with PSE10; so I would recommend buying the latest version. If you then experience any difficulties with installation or operation you will get the benefit of support.
You can also download a scaled down version from the Mac App Store or iTunes Store for PSE9. However this is the Editor only and lacks the Organizer. Some Mac users find it convenient but I would not recommend it personally. The saving is only $10 compared with a purchase directly from Adobe which often comes with a $20 mail in rebate or discount from a retailer; so effectively you could be paying more. Most books and tutorials involve steps going to and from the Organizer to the Edit modes and also if you ever wish to upgrade in future Adobe will simply send you back to the app store. You will need both platforms initially.
You can download PSE10 from the following link and try it out for 30 days, free of charge. If you like it and decide to keep it, simply purchase a boxed version of PSE10 from your favorite retailer and enter the product code from the DVD box into the trial. No further installation from disk is required.

  • Which MacBook Air should I get?

Somebody wants to buy me a MacBook Air as a present because I will be doing volunteer work starting in January helping some disabled people learn to use Macs on Sundays.
I wonder which I should get.
Does anybody know the difference between these two models (see screenshot - it's Japanese, but you should get the gist of it). One has 256 SSD and one has 256 "Flash Storage."  What's the difference? Is one just an older model?
Should I add a little extra and go for a Pro model?
This would be a "2nd computer" for me for travel and when out of the office. My main computer is my iMac.
    Opinions welcome!
    Thanks,

2013 model has 802AC wifi, much faster
    dual mics
    cooler Haswell processor

id call Apple again to verify the models are the same, I dont speak Japanese, but from the pics, you can tell, because the 2012 dont have dual mics on the left side, 2013 does
