Which MAC OS server able to run under Xserver (Late 2006)

I want to know which MAC OS server software can run under xserver (A1196, Late 2006)? I knew 10.4.8 Tiger Server is part of it. I tried to install clean 10.6.3 server software but it said it don't support hardware.
Is there a way to install server software, if it able to run?

Hi FERusso the 2006 can go to Lion (10.7) you might need to do the firmware update to get 10.6 installed. You should be able to download it via software update and it will then be in your Applications - Utilities folder..
Thanks

To connect both iMacs, you need a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter, and a FireWire 400 cable, so you will be able to connect both Macs

  • Which mac was the last to run on OS9

I am trying to find what older Mac to upgrade to as my 2001 "basketball iMac" is becoming less and less reliable. Is there any way to transfer data from an OS9 machine to a OS 10?  I would consider upgrading to the last Mac that was capable of running on OS9. Any practical suggestions?

Is there any way to transfer data from an OS9 machine to a OS 10?
    1) Probably the easiest.  Get a flash drive & copy data to there. Copy to new machine.
    2) Set up an ethernet connection between the machines & run ftp.  If no router, you may need to connect the machines with a crossover cable.

You can use any web browser to download from Mac OS X when you turn on Web sharing. This is how I downloaded fetch.
    3) Do both machines have firewire?
If you have a second Mac computer, you may want to try to copy over as many files you can. One way is to use target disk mode.

  • Which Mac Mini to Use as a Server?

    Hello Everyone,
I have researched this but have not been able to find the answer I have been looking for as it relates to recent hardware and/or message posts.
I want to set up a Mac Mini as a server to be used mainly for file storage with an external hard drive between 4 other Macs and a couple PCs, then have the files uploaded to a service such as CrashPlan for offsite backup. Also, I want to use it with VPN to access my files remotely. I don't plan to use it for anything else but that. My question is, concerning my needs, can I get by with the dual-core model or should I go with the quad-core or server model? The dual-core is $200 or $400 cheaper which I can use for other hardware, such as the external hard drive.
Has anyone had experience with both to compare the performance and such?
Has anyone used the Mac Mini for the same purpose I plan to use one for?
    What problems have you encountered?
What are some things to be aware of?
Do you have any other suggestions for this plan?
Please don't be bashful. I need to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. Your comments are greatly appreciated and will help me make an informed decision.
Many thanks to everyone for your help!!!
    God bless you all!!!
    Puterdood.

You shouldn't need anything more than the base i5 model ($599). The RAM is sufficient for your usage also. You don't need to spend the money on a Mac Mini Server.
I currently have a late-2012 i5 base model with 4GB of RAM running OS X Mavericks and OS X Server 3.0.2. It works really well and with Maverick's memory management (memory compression), the 4GB of RAM is like having 6GB. I'm running the DNS, Profile Manager, File Sharing, Time Machine Backup, VPN and Open Directory services. It's a home server. I also added a 128GB SSD which I put OS X Mavericks, OS X Server, Apps and User accounts on. I use the stock 500GB HDD for data storage and file sharing.

  • New Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011) + 12TB Storage = ?

So the goal is kind of simple...I just bought a Mac Mini Server (+ 4GB Ram upgrade to total 8GB) with Lion of course to faciliate a fairly basic concept. The Mac Mini Server will be running all the time and will be the central storage point for all data/apps/etc including serving my Apple TV (2nd Gen) via iTunes. I have 4 x 3TB drives and/or 2 x 2TB drives that I'd like to RAID 0 (or JBOD/Concatenate if necessary) to show up as 1 uber drive for storage in which the mini can access whenever. The thing is that obviously there is only so much disk space available in the mini itself, and outside of that you're looking at either USB 2.0, Firewire, or Thunderbolt as a connection interface to external media. USB 2 is fairly slow, firewire kind of ***** and has limited devices available, and Thunderbolt is retardly expensive (coming from the guy that just spent nearly $1000 on hard drives) not to mention nothing exists for that yet. There's always the option for gigabit ethernet which would work well if we were working with an NAS.
Here's the thing. Being that this is going to be one big uber drive, the first question is how to interface with it. I'm not opposed to Direct Attached Storage except the available connectors are fairly slow or not out there yet. I'm not opposed to NAS either as long as I have the *option* to hook it up locally (perhaps via USB, is that possible?). The bigger issue here is that RAID 0, JBOD, or concatenated is all quite volitile which is just a downside of my needing to have no more than 1 uber drive. So my thought was to back it up with an online service, likely with one that offers unlimited backup like Carbonite and Live Drive. The issue with Carbonite is that it doesn't support anything that isn't a local internal drive (no NAS or DAS). Live Drive's software isn't yet working properly with OS X but does support NAS on paper.
Does anyone have any thoughts any way around any of this? I'm not too sure how to word it more clearly. My latest thought prior to LiveDrive screwing me over software-wise was to grab an 8bay NAS and activate the NAS aspect of LiveDrive which would pretty much solve my problem after paying $160/yr. Again though, this no longer works as they've pretty much shat on the OS X client. I also tried running a virtual machine with Win 7 via Parallels 6 but it wasn't able to view the NAS at all. I don't exactly want to buy an identical box with identical drives either because that's well over another $1000 so something a bit more creative or practical would be nice.
Again in the end, I just need Mac Mini Server OS X Lion to have one (wishful) "internal" 12TB drive (realistically NAS or DAS) that I can have a back up of the whole 12TB over some reasonable speed interface (assuming gigabit ethernet is the way to go).

sounds like you need a DROBO.  If all you're doing is serving up audio and video, a USB 2.0 connection is fine.  It sounds like you're looking for two different things...local storage and an online backup service.  Or, are you talking about uploading all your content somewhere and streaming it down to your mini?  If it's #2, then that's going to be way slower than connecting a USB device.
For online backups, I use Crashplan, which is better than Mozy and Carbonite (both of which I've used for at least a year), IMO.

  • Mac Mini Server setup with airport express

I have had issues trying to setting up mac mini server on my network. I wonder if my current hardware is the problem? At present I have a Thomson Router plugged into an airport express which broadcasts wifi for my house. I have been connecting to my wifi with my mac mini server. Despite running server assistant and setting up a DNS server in Mac Mini server no clients are able to connect to the DNS server (i.e. dig command works on server but not on clients). I found reference somewhere on the internet to the fact that the mac mini server must be plugged into the router via ethernet for it to be setup properly.
Could this be the cause of my problems? Is it true?

Just to clarify this is an airport express and not airport extreme therefore I am reliant on a wireless connection between my mac mini server and the airport express.
The model of the Airport device here is largely irrelevant.
Currently my Thomson router serves out an address of 192.168.1.67 to airport express router.
Do you have any control over the gateway router?
The airport express is configured to share out a single IP address
Double NAT (which is what you have here) will cause you problems. Get rid of one layer of NAT.
The airport express gives out addresses in range of 10.0.1.2-10.0.1.202 with 10.0.1.1 being the address for the airport express and 10.0,1.201 being assigned via DHCP to the mac mini server (using its MAC address to reserve the address)
Within the private blocks, the IP addressing organization is your decision.
The DNS server is set on the airport express to 10.0.1.201 (i.e. my server).
OK. (I usually pick smaller numbers for more important boxes, because I tend to type addresses for those boxes more than the addresses of the boxes over in DHCP-land. But again, this is your call.)
I guess I wondered if something funky was going on with server assistant during the setup. A post I read somewhere (I've lost the link) was someone in an identical situation who had issues and said that apple had stated that he need to be directly connected to the router by ethernet cable to get things working. I wondered if this is the issue. An airport express does not have a spare ethernet port to plug into so I wonder if I need to buy a wireless router with built-in ports i.e. airport extreme (expense+) or something similar.
I'd probably switch the box to access point, but that presumes you can get (more) control over the gateway router.
I can access by Thomson router but I able unable to change the DNS servers that it provides (set by my ISP) from the GUI. I'm sure you could probably do it from the commandline but I think this is beyond me. I did wonder if that is what is causing problems
Talk with the ISP. You'd prefer to have the device switched to a bridge, if that's feasible. If not, then you're going to have to work within the confines of the particular model.

  • Mac mini server mid 2011 lion mouse pointer disappears after sleep

    Hi,
I bought a mid 2011 mac mini server (quad core) running OSX Lion (10.7.2), and I use it with the magic trackpad. Sometimes (not every time) when I wake the computer from sleep (I let it sleep via the menu at night), the mouse pointer is not visible. I can use the trackpad, and move the mouse and click, only I cannot see where I click because the mouse pointer is not visible.
The batteries in the trackpad are OK.
When I plug in a USB mouse, I can move and click that too, but the mouse pointer is still invivible.
So it seems to be OSX related
The only thing that seems to help is to restart the system. After reboot the mouse is back as normal. Still this is very annoying as it makes sleep quite useless.
Anyone else suffering from this? Any solutions? Thanks.
    Thanks,
    Gino

I also have this issue intermittantly but fairly often.
But sometimes the cursor comes back but the screen stays black except where the cursor has moved across, revealing the screen, a bit like using the spraycan tool in MacPaint years ago.
And to top it off I have a problem with sleep making all the open apps try to quit, but one is always unable to, and it seems to lock everthing up until I wake up the mac, and then all the apps that were open do resume, but in the meantime any TV programs that should have recorded (by waking up mac to record) using my Elgato EyeTV have been missed ...

  • I'm unable to connect to my mac mini server remotely since the upgrade to OSX 10.8.5. I was able to connect without problem (from an Ipad and a Mac Pro workstation)before the upgrade which I applied last week.

I installed an update to OSX 10.8.5 last week. I've been unable to use Remote Desktop VNC from my Mac Pro working station or use Mocha Vnc Lite from my Ipad to gain access to my mac mini server since I applied the update. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi David,
thank you. I tried all the steps and the thing different is that now with my usual user the CC app crashes silently, but Photoshop and Illustrator generate a crash report with this message:
    /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC/Adobe Photoshop CC.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/amtlib.framework/Versions/A/amtlib
    abort() called
    terminate called throwing an exception
With the Adobe user it runs with no problems, I even tried to do a "diff" of running user processes between the two users and remove all launchers and extensions but it's still the same.
I am a developer so I use XCode and other "dotfiles" and dirs within my home directory, I'm also using Ruby/RVM, NodeJS and some other. Can some of this stuff cause conflicts?
    Thank you

  • Can I run 4 super drives with my Mac Mini Server

I have Lion Server downloaded to my Mac Mini (set up as a TV server) and would like to be able to access the 4 USB Super Drive ports via other Mac Mini's in other rooms, 2 Apple TV's if possibe through Apple TV software and maybe Macbook Pro via AirPlay. Are these things possible. The Mac Mini Server is the Best Home television distribution network. Cheaper hardware and fast internet connection based on devices. The above is my goal.
    My individual questions...
Can I place 4 Super Drives in the 4 USB slots and run them?
What is the most effiecent way to be able to server those drives on ONLY my Apple Network (other Mac Mini and 2 Apple TV's)
Can I access multiple drives at once from different devices on my Apple Network?
Can I restrict access to teen and child users based on the TV Rating displayed on DVD in Super Drive? (ex: iTunes recognizes CD's by times of songs and digital fingerprint when I input my Store bought CD or adds it to the Database if its a new title.)
    These would help so much!
    Thanks,
    Stefan
Have any questions on how to turn your Mac into a home Multimedia System, ask.

    no
a dvd drive can never be shared over a network in order to play the dvd drives content
the dvd encryption makes this imposible
you have to rip (which is illegal) each dvd disc to a computer in order to do what you wish to do
and it's not an apple thing it's the case no matter which computer you own

  • New Mac Mini Server, two Hard drives, Can I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

New Mac Mini Server, has two Hard drives, could I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

I haven't purchased a Mac Mini at this time and I may not if I can't use it as a non server. I need to update my system I would be better off buying a new Mac with Snow Leopard the last app that will run Rosetta. The Mac Mini Server has a quad 2.0 processor and 4 GB RAM and two internal hard drives and should out perform my dual 1.25 G4. I can run PPC apps on my G4 but it is 8+ years old and seems to be getting noisy. I don't want to tie myself to another old machine. I want a machine that will work with Intel Apps I was hoping that the two hard drives would allow me to boot from the second with Snow Leopard and use Lion on the first drive to be able to keep up to date with all my other universal apps and Mac OS up grades. The application I use the most is my CanvasX app with drawing & vector effects, text & typography, sprite technology, painting, image editing, and multimedia tools are all in this one app but will not be updated to run Intel apps. I am frozen in time because my most valuable Application won't be updated and Apple has cut me off by not supporting PPC in Lion and onward; Apple used to backward support but I guess that they are no longer as user friendly and concerned with a happy user. I have always been a loyal Mac user and I will not migrate to Windows under any circumstance; I hate windows!
    Thanks for your prompt response,

  • Is it possible to run Mac OS Server as a VM

Is it possble to buy and install Mac OS Server as a VM on a windows 2008 server running vmware?
Currently working on integrating macs, ipads and iphones into a windows domain and have a few areas where Windows Config Manager and Windows AD does not solve my issues. My manager has accepted to buy Mac Server, but wants to have it installed as a vm.

The license for OS X and Server.app does allow running in a VM and this can be VMware but the license only allows this if the VM is hosted on Apple (Mac) hardware.
In theory you can run Server 2008R2 on Mac hardware and VMware on top off that so technically the answer is yes. In reality the answer is no you cannot do this.
You will therefore have to consider getting something like a Mac Mini server, running the Apple software on that and binding it to Active Directory. There are special brackets available to 'rackmount' Mac mini computers.
If you want a sort of failover capability for the Mac server, something which Apple themselves no longer provide in software then an approach is to have two identical Macs, you would setup one and clone it to the second (spare). You would then boot the second one in FireWire Target Disk mode and have it connected via FireWire to the first main Mac server. It will then show up as an external drive. You would then set the first main server to periodically sync to the second one to keep it up to date.
As always with servers they should be protected by a UPS.
You then need a managed power strip like this http://www.amazon.com/APC-AP7900-Switched-Surge-Protector/dp/B0000AAAYH/ref=sr_1 _8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1355395198&sr=1-8&keywords=managed+power+strip
With this power strip, you can use a web-browser to remotely turn off or on individual power sockets. If the main server dies you would then turn its socket off and would power cycle the second backup Mac server. This second Mac would then boot as normal and be able to take over server duties.
Unlike Windows, Apple software will not whine about product activation and serial numbers and will therefore boot and run without any issues even though it is now running on a different device.
You could extend this approach somewhat by having the Macs connect to a SAN.
Note: There are Thunderbolt to FDDI adaptors giving you the same performance levels as a traditional PCI-E card.
These Macs can either use internal software RAID1 for protection, or you can boot from an external Thunderbolt RAID box which can be configured to RAID5, or you can combine the two. You cannot boot the Mac from a SAN.

Question: Is it possible for me to have a weblogic properties file under each
              of this application.

If your question is whether you can run multiple instances of WebLogic
(or multiple applications) on one server, the answer is yes. The only
problem is, you must have a unique port for each of the servers to run
on. I.e., they can not all run under port 80 which has obvious
              internet/network implications.
This also means you have multiple weblogic.properties files etc. for
              each instance.
We do this with WL5.1 on a Linux 2.4 kernel in developement to allow
multiple developers run their own instance on one box.

  • Applications running under Managed Account not able to connect to servers

My kids use a Managed Account on my MacBook (running Lion).  They have two games (Roblox and Minecraft) which can not connect to their particular game servers.  These games work fine when running under the Administrator account.  I believe that the ports that these games are trying to connect to may be blocked when running under a Managed Account.  The firewall is disabled.  Is there a way to open up specific network ports to programs running under Managed Accounts?

Still don't have an anwer for you, but just a few thoughts... So it would seem that creating a Managed account automatically invokes some user account firewall settings, since the game works under your admin account. I was  able to access the System Prefs under a managed account to see about opening up the port in question, but if this is indeed the problem, the firewall isn't the GUI kind.
It's possible that there would be a terminal command to do so, but I wouldn't have a clue about how to do that.
