Which MacBook for graphically intensive applications?

Hey all
Im planning to get a MacBook for my GCSE's, and im leaning towards the Air.
I will be running applications such as Adobe Photoshop CS5, After Effects CS5, Lightroom CS5, and Final Cut Express regularly, so would a 13" 1.86ghz MBA C2D Processor with 4gb of RAM be able to run these apps fast and efficiently with no lag? Or should I opt for the baseline MBP 13"? Im worried that it may be laggy as my cureent Core i3 HP can not handle AE well, but then again, it does have many problems such as slow HDD and only 3gb of Ram
Any help on which i should get? The 13" MBA 1.86ghz 4GB or 13" MBP 2.4ghz?
Thanks

For your needs the described MBA would perform worse than your I3 which is a faster processor. Stick to the 15" MBPs - I5 or I7 which have the better GPUs.

  • RMBP and Freezing during Graphics Intense Applications

    Hi all,
I have a MBP Retina and whenever I try to run Civilization V or Aperture Full Screen (or anything else that requires switching to the nVidia graphics), my computer completely freezes in place.  This means everything can display on the screen, but everything just stops.  If I was listening to iTunes while doing whatever activity it suddenly stops playing, along with the application I am using.  Mouse is completely frozen.  Is it a software problem?  Should I go spend some time getting it replaced at the Apple Store?
    Thanks.
    -Dave

    Hey Dave,
I've been experiencing the same exact issue. I also noticed when using an external display that the screen will show some static for a couple seconds then everything will work as intended.
Were you able to replicate this issue on the Windows partition (if you have one)? The issue is definitely heat related. If I use SMCfancontrol to keep the fans at a higher rpm while gaming or using a graphic intense application, everything is fine.
I'm trying to figure out how to handle this.
    Thanks,
    Coupe

  • Processor for graphic design application: dual-core i5 or quad core i7?

I am planning on buying a MacBookPro, and I am comparing the processor options.  Using the MacBook for graphic design – Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign – will I see a significant difference in performance between the 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, and the 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7? I will typically need multiple files open at once, but I will not be doing any video editing or gaming. If going with the dual-core i5 won’t be too slow, I’d like to save that money! Thanks.

    Thanks for answer!
That means I should take the Dual Core (i5),because I don't play games very often.
    But Portal 2 should work?!
At the moment I have a PC with 2,4 Ghz Core 2 Quad and it works fine
    Please explain with more information

  • Display flickering during graphics intense applications

I'am using a Macbook Pro late 2011 having intel i7 processor and  AMD radeon HD 6750M and 4gb RAM..
I had installed windows 7 through bootcamp and used it to play graphics intense games.. worked fine
After a while i installed different drivers for the graphics processor for ATI website, it did not perform well and after a while(means after days) it started getting a split screen and eventually went blank... i had to restart the laptop manually.. after a while windows did not boot.. I uninstalled windows and used only osX.. eventually osX(10.9) also got a slipt screen and went blank.. i restarted the laptop manually but the start screen where the apple logo shines had horizontal blue lines... yhe OS did not boot and whene i went to the recovery mode i got a death blue screen(just blue).... I took my laptop to the nearest service center(in india) .. they formatted my hard disc and reinstalled the OS.. they told me it was "an operating system crash" and no problem with the hardware... everthing went fine.. I played another game on OSX and again got the split screen.. i restarted it manually.. everything was fine.. i installed fifa 13 on my mac.. ran pretty well.. later i tried converting a video and got the same problem ...
I dont know wether it is a software or hardware problem and can i continue playing games on MAC!!??... my free service has expired and service centers here charge a lot and dont do anythimg well!!!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
In your case, it is clear that the GPU has failed. It would be a software issue if it only happens in Windows or OS X, but it is a hardware issue if it happens in both operating systems. This was the first thing that happened to me when my iMac's GPU got damaged.
The problem of the GPU is that it is quite expensive to get it replaced, because the whole logic board has to be replaced. If you cannot afford it and you can start up in OS X, what you can do is to use gfxCardStatus and put it in integrated mode, so your Mac will only use the integrated GPU and you should not experience that problem again. However, you will notice a performance decrease in games

  • Periodic lag experienced in graphics-intensive application

This lag is debilitating.  So far I have only experienced it on the Windows 7 (64 bit) side of my Bootcamp partition, but I have not attempted to run such applications in the OSX side.
The Problem:  About every 5.1 to 5.2 seconds, the framerate drops to a standstill.  As this happens over and over again, the duration of the stutter increases until after about an hour it is equal parts smooth and lagged.  Despite the increased duration, the periodicity remains between 5.1 and 5.2 seconds by my stopwatch.  Eventually, the lag becomes so great that the applications become unusable.
I have found this problem in the following applications:
    TERA Online
    Guild Wars2
    Star Wars The Old Republic
I have also found forum discussions citing the same symptoms in Diablo 3, although I have not played or installed that game on my own system.
This appears to be a common problem across all these graphics-intensive games specifically centered around the iMac.  This is why I am bringing this up to the Apple community.  Has anyone else seen this phenomenon?  Is there a solution?   I did just update the Radeon HD 4850 graphics drivers.  Could that have something to do with it?

Interestingly, when I turned on my computer this morning, it got stuck in the boot process.  The revolvong timer under the apple logo took about three minutes to clear and then I got stuck on the blue screen that appears before you see your desktop wallpaper.  I had to manually turn it off and restart it.  It started fine the second time.  The only thing I had done the day before was move my bootcamp folders into the privacy section of Spotlight as recommended on another forum.
When I launched bootcamp, I noticed one difference immediately:  the clock was correct.  I know this sounds silly, but the computer clock in Windows had been five hours off for over a week.  I've had to manually set it each time I boot into bootcamp.  Not today.  Also today there has been no lag as I have described above.  Whatever the problem was (or is), the symptoms have disappeared.  I wonder if it was related to the clock, and/or Spotlight.
In any event, I also took your advice and downloaded CCleaner and performed a drive analysis, cleaned it and my registry today.  I'll conduct some more tests, but so far the symptoms seem to have gone away.

  • Display for graphic design application

    Hi every body,
Today i'm going searching my new iMac 20" Dual Core and i want to know if you think the 20" display is a good stuff to make graphic design application.
We work now on 19" ViewSonic CRT flat screen.
    Thanks all.
Excuse my english, i'm a french canadian...

    Bonjour Wayne99,
I use my iMac for Photoshop and Illustrator all the time, and the 20" monitor is PERFECT!
My only beef with it is the color setting, I changed mine to Adobe RGB 1998, because the default 'iMac color' setting is way too...bright/faded looking.

  • Which MacBook for the tropics?

I will be moving soon to the tropics (Jakarta, Indonesia) for a year and I want to buy a new MacBook for that. I am thinking of buying either the MacBook Pro 15" or the MacBook Air 13".
Which of these models would handle the extreme heat and humidity best? I will be working in a non-air conditioned environment with temperatures of over 35 degrees celcius (95+ Fahrenheit) and humidity of 90% and over.
I am worried whether the Air will be able to handle this kind of heat.
Most of the work will be development related with occasional video watching and some photo editing. Both machines in a normal environment would work well.
Thanks for any tips you can provide,
    Johan

for the latest MacBook Air and Macbook Pro's the following apply
    Electrical and operating requirements
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
    Storage temperature: -13° to 113° F (-24° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 0% to 90% noncondensing

  • Options for Bandwidth intensive application

I appreciate any recommendations, I have a remote office needing to access a very bandwidth intensive application (scanned TIF images) currently we are looking at a 100Mb metro ethernet or DS3 type of link to our office where the DB resides. Are there any content caching products or new technology that would help me improve access to this application?

in order to accomodate content caching as you've described you need, for an enterprise class environment, you'll want to check out the Cisco CSS line of content switches.
a quick view of the CSS abilities for content caching includes:
    (taken from cco documentation)
    * examining network traffic for web content requests
    * bypassing the cache automatically for non-cachable content
    * distributing content requests to maximize cache hits
    * bypassing the cache or redistributing requests among the remaining cache services if a cache service fails
    * proxy caching capabilities.
among other capabilities, this device would allow you to create a 'farm' of web servers where your content can be housed utilizing faster response times and high availability.
please see the following link for more info on the CSS and its abilities:
(there are other 'model' versions of the CSS than the one linked here)

  • Which macbook for editing?

I'm wondering if the macbook air, macbook pro, or macbook pro with retina display will be better for video, and photo editing.
I have a gaming computer and I just wanted a separate laptop for my photography and video editing. It will also be helpful for when I travel.
    What it'll be used for:
    Adobe photoshop
    Adobe after effects
    Daily (Emails, notes, homework)
Would I need i5 or i7? Because I heard i7 is better for editing. Do I need to go from 4gb to 8gb ram? And the same from how much space I should upgrade to?
Macbook air has a long battery life and the new intel HD 5000 graphics.
Macbook pro with retina display has the nice retina display which may be great for editing, but is it truly even worth it?
I'm currently in school for software engineering, and photography.
Which should I get, and what are the necessary upgrades I will need?

Unless you're too delicate and can't handle the weight, a regular MacBookPro with the Widescreen/Anti-glare and 2.6GHz processor options (gets you 1GB VRAM as well):
Then upgrade by yourself to 16GB RAM and either a 7200RPM HDD or an SSD for substantially less than what Apple charges and you will have a screamer.

  • Which mac for graphic designer on Ps, Ai, ID ?

    Hello,
I'm looking for new mac, budget is +- ~1k pounds.
I'm confuse which one is better for me, I have some opinions for these:
    MacBook Pro 13":
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
    Total: £999.00 incl. VAT
    Mac mini:
    2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    320GB Serial ATA Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
    Apple Magic Mouse
    Apple Wireless Keyboard
    Total: £964.01 incl. VAT
    iMac 21.5:
    3.06GHz Intel Core i3
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    500GB Serial ATA Drive
    ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM
    Apple Magic Mouse
    Apple Wireless Keyboard
    Total: £999.00 incl. VAT

You're going to actually do work on this? Forget the 13"
While I have one and really like it, there's no way in the world I could be productive with it.
I'd recommend you bump your budget up to a 24" iMac.

  • Which MacBook for processing Nikon D800 files

I'm considering a few MacBook options and would appreciate advice on performance:
    MBA 11" i7 8GB
    MBA 13" i7 8GB
    rMBP 13" i5 8GB
I'm shooting a Nikon D800 which generates RAW/NEF files around 37-42MB, and when created into a TIF can get up to 200MB.  I need a latop for travelling which means I can work on Lightroom and Photoshop. I definitely need 8GB of RAM, but I'm not sure about the processor.  I would prefer a higher resolution screen, but not at the expense of performance.
I've been told that the i5 on the MBA is lacking and that I would definitely need the i7.  The rMBP 13" has a faster i5, but I'm not sure whether it will handle the file size.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone using any of these sets ups with the D800.
    Thanks

I always advise going for the 2.0 machine...if it's not going to be too much of a financial hardship. Why? Well, so that if you need it, you've got it. You may think you'll only use it for word processing--but then maybe you'll get into photography or videos in the next year and be glad of the extra power. (That happens with Mac users by the way. The programs that come with the machine are so appealing that they start using them, and doing more on the computers than they'd ever done before.) Or maybe new programs will come out that you want, and you'll be grateful for the extra to help running them.
The other thing to keep in mind is that Macs tend to last. So where people might replace a laptop within a year or two, with a Mac they replace it in three-four years. Maybe even longer. So getting a more powerful machine is worth the money because it's likely that you'll be holding onto it longer and it'll need to keep up with your growing and changing needs.
That, at least, is my advice.

  • SQLJ for Data Intensive Application?

    Hi!
I am thinking about writing a program that is very data-intensive data-mining application. It will process millions of records where each record is a 80 byte character. I will need to do a lot of comparisons and sub-string operations. I wonder if anyone out here has done some similar project in Java before. Any information would help. I am particularly interested in looking for information pertain to reading all data into memory for Java processing. Also, should I use PL/SQL or Oracle C instead?
    Thanks.
    Aaron

it depends what you mean by "millions" of (80 byte)records
if you mean about 5 million, then you will be dealing with 400 Megs or info at one time, and if you have a fancy computer with a whole bunch of ram you probably won't have any problem just loading all the info into ram at once. but if your talking 200 million well then you will probably have some redesigning to do.
Other then that the processing time really just depends on what you are doing to the data, and since you haven't been specific about it it is hard to tell how the performance of your program will be.

  • Which macbook for video

I am buying myself an apple macbook pro next week. It will be a 15inch but I am wondering what version I should pick. I will be editing video for internet, managing blog and website, working on photoshop.. so quite a lot of media stuff. I am not doing this at a very high level (still learning) but want to have something I can evolve with. Can anyone help me choosetnx Some advise?

Get one with the dual GPUs and get the largest 7200 rpm HDD available (and you'll likely still end up needing an external FW800 7200 rpm drive to supplement the internal).

  • Periodic lag/screen brightening experienced in graphics-intensive application

Hey I just started playing Guild Wars 2 on my iCore5 and I'm having a very similar issue, randomly when I'm playing my screen with brighten as if someone is turning the brightness up and when this happen it will kill my fps and lag me. This effect last for about 3-5 seconds then it will return to normal for a few seconds then continue to lag. I played SwTOR on my boot camp and never once had an issue. Can anyone tell me what might be happening? I'm going to try and reinstall the game to tonight.
    <Subject Edited by Host>

    It's an iMac.
I went and looked at my settings last night and the min. Requirements for guild wars 2 my computer.
I haven't tried to update my drivers yet in going to try that tonight.
I sent a request to their support website haven't gotten a reply yet.
When I do play on Boot Camp side there is nothing running but the current game I'm playing.
I also found out last night that sadly when I installed this boot camp version I used a 32bit install disc I do have a 64 bit so if all else fails I'll reinstall all of windows.
I'm by no means s computer guru, but it has me s little stumped as to why I can play WOW, diablo 3, SWTOR, and never see this problem. So I don't think it's a hardware issue.
    Thanks again for the help.
