Which macbook pro configuration should i buy for the non retina line?
i can't deside if it is worth it to upgrade to the 2.9GHz dual-core intel core i7 or stick with the stock one. Also im not sure if 8gbs of ram is going to be enough even though it is the max the cpu will allow. I am planning to use my Macbook pro for highschool, photo editing in Lightroom, Photoshop, and the usual like web browsing, email, etc (I'm not using Photoshop/Lightroom for my job btw just for a hobby). also i might be playing Minecraft and might be using Adobe Premiere pro for video editing. Please leave your options i'm getting it for christmas so the faster the better.
Someone please check my math. The data I see places the rMBP with higher performance and lower cost than the MBP.
I looked at the MaBook Air (MBA), MacBook Pro (MBP), and Retina MBP (rMBP) price and performance and the 13” rMBP appears to take the cake with the MBA in second place and the MBP a distant third. The MBP has the slowest graphics and slowest standard processor for a higher price than either the rMBP or the MBA. The MBP also weights more (4.5 lbs.) and has the worst battery life (7 hours). An option in the MBP’s favor is it can have a slower but larger disk while the MBA and rMBP must use the smaller SSDs.
All the processor configurations below are (±10%) in speed compared to the MBA so processor speed is not a major differentiator. However the graphics speeds differ significantly with the MBP at the bottom with an HD 4000, the MBA in the middle with an HD 5000, and the rMBP at the top with Intel Iris Graphics.
For lower price I would choose a 1.3 GHz i5 MBA with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD for $1,400. For higher performance I would choose the 2.4 GHz i5 rMBP with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD for $1,700. If I needed more than 256 GB of storage then I might consider the MBP with a 500 GB or 1 TB disk, but that would sacrifice performance both in graphics and I/O speed. Instead of a larger system disk one could consider placing some of the storage on the 256 GB SSD and some on an external 1 TB hard disk.
Similar configurations:
MBA 1.7 GHz i7, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD: $1,550 <— 2nd place

MBP 2.5 GHz i5, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD: $1,700 <— 3rd place
Mactracker 6690 system benchmark plus HD 4000 graphics
4.5 lbs. 7 hours of battery life
8% slower CPU performance on Mactracker benchmarks
compared to the MBA
MBP 2.9 GHz i7, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD: $1,850 <— 3rd place
Mactracker 7841 system benchmark plus HD 4000 graphics

Which Macbook Pro Standard should I buy
Should I buy a Macbook Pro Standar mid 2012 or sould I wait for the updates?? Will be there updates for the macbook pro standard or death has come for them??
As far as anyone knows there is not a new standard macbook pro. Will there be, yes. When, no one knows. Will it have a dvd drive? Again no one knows. Those things only apple knows and they aren't telling.
Even if you wait to see what the newer models include, when apple releases them, you can still buy a older model as new or a refurb. -

Which Macbook Pro 2011 should I buy?
Hi, I have always used PC and will soon be buying my first Mac, However I'm quite confused as to whether I should buy a 13" Model maxed out or buy the 2.2ghz 15" Model? The thing is, the 13" model comes with dual core and 2.7ghz and the 15" model comes with quad core and 2.2ghz. I will mainly be using this for media consumption/production like iTunes, and school work. Any input would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.
Hi Matt,
It really depends on what you mainly do on your mac. If you are really a heavy video and photo editor than the 15" MBP with 2.2GHz should be fine for you. If you dont do as much photo or video editing stuff then the 13" models and the low end 15"model would serve you well. What do you do on your mac?

Greetings,
I am wondering about the upgrade coming up, to iOS 8. Should that affect whether I buy and iPad now, or not?No, it shouldn’t. Unless you’re getting a first generation iPad(which isn’t capable of running iOS 8), you’ll be able to update for free.

I have friends in USA and they visited Apple store and they asked about change the keyboard and they said Ok (the Apple store) so, I don't know about Australia store
I'm student and my une (university of New England ) give me 10% discount for each. Thanksalifromarmidale wrote:

These are user to user technical assistance forums, and nobody here represents Apple or any store. In order to find out whether you can buy something at a particular store, you really need to find some way to contact the store directly. -
A macbook pro g4 would be compatible for the boot camp
a macbook pro g4 would be compatible for the boot camp
I think it depends on the OSX version. Leopard (10.5) has the first bootcamp software and is compatible with a G4 most of the time. The problem is that you cannot install windows on a G4. You would probably have to bootcamp linux or something like that. A non- intel mac will not allow you to install windows via bootcamp. Only a VM solution compatible with the G4 could allow you to run XP as a virtual machine. It would be far slower than a bootcamp install.

Too early for the retina, too late for the non retina? Which one?
Hi everyone,
Sorry for yet another "Which MBP should I buy" post but I have read through all the of the discussions I can find on this topic as well as around the web.
I am a digital designer who is currently using a PC only because up until now I have never been in the financial position to transition over to Mac.
I am currently trying to decide between getting a a 15" Mac Book Pro or 15" Retina Mac Book Pro.
15-inch: 2.6GHz
2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1600MHz memory
750GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
High res anti-glare screen
versus:
15-inch: Retina display
2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1600MHz memory
512GB flash storage1
Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
I will be using Adobe CS6 Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver sometimes all at the same time. I occasionally have a video project where I will be using Premiere and After Effects. I am also looking into upskilling myself and becoming versed in at least basic 3D modelling. I am looking at a MBP because portability is important.
Given my job, going retina seems like a no brainer but I have a few concerns:
Speed, processing power - which will suit my needs?
This is an investment for me, I want it to last at least 3-4 years:
Is getting a standard MBP now just too late and bidding in the past?
Will resale of a standard MBP suck in 3-4 years?
In 3 years time will I need an upgrade, and if so, how will I even do this with a virtually unupgradeable (from what Ive read) Retina MBP?
About 80% of the time I plan on hooking up the MBP to a Thunderbolt display - whats the point in a Retina?
If I don't get a Retina and I need to start designing Retina graphics, will I be faced with added dificulty because I use standard MBP?
Is it realistic to assume Retina graphics won't become mainstream for 3-4 years allowing me to bide my time with a standard MBP, upgrading to a Retina later?
At work I use a 2-3 year old iMac and the screen is already magical compared to my PC and it seems to do fine for me. I've been in store and played with both and I am genuinely confused. I just feel like getting a standard MBP is like jumping on a train when it's already reached it's destination.
Budget wise I can afford the base level Retina MBP I outlined above but if I can save money, that'd be ideal. Being me I will automatically chose the best possible solution but I need to be rational about my needs. Someone please help, I just want a Mac!
Thanks in advance, any help is much appreciatedkytim wrote:

In general
Retina cannot upgrade RAM. Storage can be upgraded, but more $ than upgrading the non-Retina unit.
Non-Retina unit can upgrade RAM base-4 GB to 16 GB for about $85 (cf. OWC.) HD can be replaced with SSD or larger HD.
Therefore lack of "upgradability" in Retina
No optical drive in Retina.
The non-Retina has Ethernet and FireWire ports, and a slot for a secure cable- the Retina none of these ports. -
I've had some bad luck with MacBook Pros lately. I bought a 2010 model but it was effectively a Total Loss because of a vehicle accident. From searching with Google, people have reported logic board failures. Who knows if mine would've failed, too.
Then I bought an older 2009 MacBook Pro and that eventually failed due to the graphics chip failure. There was a recall on it but the problem occured JUST after the recall period expired. I don't have a microwave solder lying around or a proper setup to fix the problem myself.
Now, I im in the market for a used MacBook Pro, as a gift (I can't afford a new one right now) (with the luck I have, I'm basically done with them but the person wants one).
I've seen some 2011 models priced quite attractively, which caused me to do a quick check and find that the (early) 2011 models also have video graphic failures. I don't get it. I understand paying for the name, but the name also has to have reliability and you don't hear about video graphics failures from some of the more well known PC manufacturers..just saying.
I'd strongly prefer to not purchase any retina models, if at all possible. I want a mechanical SATA HDD and an optical drive. I oppose proprietary components -- as I understand it, the retina models make it nearly impossible to upgrade.
Which used MacBook Pros are safe for purchase? In other words, which ones do not have recalls or are susceptible to video graphics/display failures? I don't want to put the money down for one, only to hear it kicked the bucket and it needs service and is out of warranty.
Thank you for your time.WindowsGreaterThanUnix wrote:

I have an early 2011 MBP and have haad zero problems since it was new. -
So, I was set on the Macbook Air until Apple announced the new notebook. The reason I was set on Air previously is because I really need a portable laptop, and the Air was lighter. But the new Pro seems light enough if not as light, so I'm confused all over again.
I won't use my laptop for much. I don't use my computer for gaming or high-end photo editing. I might use it for basic photo editing, nothing too special. I'm going to start college soon, which is why I need a portable laptop with good battery life. And I will be typing a lot. I listen to a lot of music, and so, I download quite a lot of music as well. Space is not that big of an issue, since I already own an external hard drive. Other than that, I browse the Internet... basic websites... Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr etc etc.
So, input would be highly appreciated. Which laptop would meet my needs, and will be good in the long run as well? Thanks in advance. In my opinion, a college student should get the old-fashioned MacBook, NOT the Air.
You are going to be putting this in a backpack and heading off to your next class or lunch four or five times a day. The regular MacBook Pro can stand that abuse -- the Air is much more light and delicate.
If you were an executive, slipping this (in a neoprene sleeve) in and out of your Briefcase once a day, I would say the Air is fine. -

If it works with the defaults, it's probably a good idea not to mess with it.
Okay, that's that and now for the adventerous part...
Here's a minimal setup that works for me:

HOOKS="base udev"
You'd probably need to use pata_atiixp instead of pata_hpt37y, and whatever filesystem you use for / instead of jfs. In case you use encryption, lvm etc., take care to include the necessary hooks. -
My 17" MacBook Pro, mid-2010, refuses to come out of sleep. It has never had a problem before, even after installing Mountain Lion. It doesn't respond to the power on switch or any keyboard activity. Help?
BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:

I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps? -
Hello,
I want to create a webpage for my local scout association, and I would like to use dreamweaver to do it.
It's not something I will get paid for.
But I can not figure out which package I need to buy.
Because it is only me who will be using it, and therefore I thought it should be a personal license.
But I am also a student at university college of northern, therefore I thought it should be a Student license.
but maybe I'm wrong and it should be a license for a small business?
Can anybody please explains to me which package I need to buy?
In advance thank you for your time :-)
//Larsif you can qualify as a student, getting a student license is less expensive (but more of a hassle to obtain because of documentation needed).
otherwise, you would get a personal/individual license. -
