Which MacBook Pro is better and why?

I'm planning on downsizing to a 15". I've got the 17" and love it, but my new company insists I use a PC so, because I'm addicted, I'll be traveling with two - a PC and a MBP.
So which to get, the 2.0 mhz or the 2.16? Is there really that big a difference in the computing power?
Likewise, what is the difference between the video memory being 256mb and 128? My main use will be to run graphics apps (Photoshop, Lightroom).
Thanks in advance for any advice. Oh by the way I'll have the full 2GB of ram, of course...

My understanding is that all mac book pros come with the 256MB video memory...
I've had a 2.0ghz since February and it came standard with 256.
Honestly, if you're getting a 2.0 with 2GB ram, I dont' think you'll notice much difference between the 0.16 the latter will offer you.
I guess mine has 256 because in Feb 06 the 2.0 was the "2nd tier" MBP, and the 1.83 was 128MB video.
Oh wow, I'm mistaken... It seems that the current 2.0 DOES have 128MB video...
I think you should get the 2.16. Based on current rumors you may want to wait until the 25th... I don't think anything will happen, but I still think the hype may be worth the wait.

  • Which Macbook Pro is better for a Music Tech major?

I am going to convert to a Macbook Pro from a PC because of the vast numbers of music programs it offers. I just want to know some opinions of which of the 13.3 inch ones would be best. I know there is a difference between processors, but I'd like to know which one would be better for multi-tasking on the go with programs like Logic Express, Sibelius, and Pro Tools.

    Hi R,
The fastest CPU (currently 2.7GHz Core i7) with an SSD and the RAM maxed out.

  • Which macbook pro for lightroom and photoshop

Have my eye on the two 15" models. One with Intel iris pro graphics, the other that also has the nvidia gt 750m. Maybe I'm making mountains from molehills. You can tell me if you think that's the case
I will use my laptop at home always attached to a large screen. It's what I do with my current, April 2008 macbook pro. Right now a 25" NEC. I may add an additional screen as well, so I might have two screens besides the laptop, one attached via hdmi.
Right now I don't do video work. No gaming concerns for me. Photoshop and Lightroom the bulk of my work. 70,000 image Lr catalog. Large size photoshop files. Well near 1 gb sometimes with several layers.
If I buy the mbp with just the intel iris pro graphics card I'm thinking to upgrade processor to 2.5ghz. Will also upgrade ssd to 500gb. Or do I need, will I benefit from the nvidia card and card switching, dgpu?
I've just been reading about problems with the discrete graphics card version. Problems with freezing video, some with problems looking at certain websites via a browser firefox or safari. I wonder if that's only with older versions of the mbp.
And that the mbp with the dgpu, the nvidia gt 750m always uses that card when there is an external monitor attached. Creates additional heat for the computer.
Just looking for some advice before i hand over the cash. There is only a 100 difference in price so in the end I'm not concerned about cost. Just want a computer to do what I need, do it well, and for me to have as few problems as possible. I do like to keep my computers a long time. This current mbp is seven years old in a month. The computer I had before that, a G4, lasted me eight years.
    thanks for advice...

The 2.6 Haswell i7 processor should be just fine - you really don't need the faster processors. Since Lightroom caches so much, though, it would be nice to keep most of that in RAM - much faster than writing/reading to a flash storage device - so I would recommend 16GB of RAM as you cannot ever upgrade the RAM on your own (or even through Apple).
You should be able to do anything on your MacBook Pro as on your iMac - albeit on a smaller screen!

  • Which Macbook Pro is better for me?

I bought the 13" version with the 2.4 GHz i5 processor.  I know that I definitely don't want anything bigger, because I prefer smaller laptops.  Now I'm kind of having doubts, though - should I have gone for the higher-end model of the 13"?
Is the 2.8 GHz i7 processor that much better than the 2.4 GHz i5 processor?
Honestly, I don't really don't use a lot of advanced programs or games.  I usually use my computer for browsing the Internet, and for using Microsoft Office.  I also like to use Photo Booth and iPhoto, and I enjoy uploading and editing my photos (although not professionally - just with iPhoto and an online program called Picnik).
I also use iTunes, although I don't have a tremendous amount of songs.  The only game that I ever play is the Sims, so my biggest concern is that the computer be able to run The Sims 4 if/when it comes out.
I also use iTunes, although I don't have a tremendous amount of songs - probably less than 3 GB right now, although my collection will grow a bit.
I doubt that I will ever come close to using the 500 GB drive, so that's not a huge concern for me.
Since this will be my main computer for a few years or so, I want to make sure that it's powerful to do everything that I need.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

For all the things your describe, the mac you purchased is more than capable of handling all those tasks.  One might even argue that a MacBook Air might be sufficient. No one here can say with certainty what technical requirements will be needed to play a game that may or may not be released.

I am going to university this fall for engineering and I was wondering which macbook pro (13 or 15 inch) would be better. Is the larger screen worth the extra weight ? I will be doing some computer programming and I feel like reading code on a smaller screen could be a bit of a pain. Also, what is the best option in terms of backup? I don't anticipate having a lot of video but I will have some pictures, music files as well as regular documents and spreadsheets. I'd also like to get an idea of how good the battery life is. Thanks in advance:)

The 13" will do the trick for what you describe as your needs, Be sure to consider how you will backup your data -- need an external drive?
Also be sure to check with your college or division of study to see what they recommend. If they are hostile to Macs, you may be on your own for finding support. But in most major cities, that will not be too hard.

Which is better and why: Safari or Firefox?

Thx, I've been using FF on my MacBook, as I did with PowerMacs before that. I used to work in the industry and stay up on current trends; but, I'm just a regular user with a new MacAir now and hate to bother my SF/SJ peeps with trivial questions.
As I start to load up the Air, I'm just a bit overwhelmed with the volume of bookmarks I've collected and organzied in FF on my MB.

have a problem with my MacBook Pro.5,3 and monitor.  Intermittently, the desk top screen becomes broken up into vertical sections, which appear in the wrong order, creating a haphazard picture.
The Apple icon, usually at top left corner, appears in top right corner  in a strip including all that left hand.  When the computer is restarted, the screen goes back to normal.  But I have to move the mouse to the far left of the screen and then up until it reappears on the far right hand side of the screen so that I can hit shut down button.
It seems to happen randomly though always on desk top and sometimes when I move mouse and computer switches on from rest mode.   My large flat screen is relatively new.
The video card on this computer, which is approximately two years old, is Nvidia FeForce 9400M.
Any help would be welcome as my usual source of assistance is not available and I am not well versed in workings of the Mac although I have used one for many years.

That sounds like a Hardware problem.
You may be able to confirm that with Apple Hardware Test, or make an appointmenst for a free Genius Bar evaluation.

  • MacBook Pro smell and need help deciding on which MacBook Pro to buy

So I bought a 17-inch MacBook Pro from my brother in August of 2009. He bought it in March of 2008. A couple days ago I noticed that my MacBook Pro has been releasing a really bad smell almost as if burning plastic. But the smell isn't that bad. What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro? I'm getting a New 15 or 13-inch MacBook Pro in June so idk if I should just not worry about it? And I need help deciding if I should get a high end 13-inch MacBook Pro or a low end 15-inch MacBook Pro?

What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro?
Take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check as to the cause of the smell.

Why not ask in the MacBook Pro (Late 2008 and 2009) forum area?

Mavericks is an upgraded System in the same way that Mountain Lion was, the difference being that it's free. You can download the installer from the Mac App Store (the system requirements are the same as for Mountain Lion so you should be OK there). I've not got it: reports suggest that it is an improvement over Mountain Lion but it has some quirks that may or may not be an issue for you. It has its own forum, so you could look there for information.

  • Which is better and why a = new String("AA") or a = "AA"

    Hi,
    Which is better and why
    String a = new String("AA") or
    String a = "AA"
Does invoking a construtor waste memory? Please explain in detail.
    Thanks in advance
    Deepak

    > So in case "AA" not there in string pool,
    That is not correct.
does new creates "AA" on string pool as well as heap memory?Yes. The literal "AA" points to a pooled String object. The new operator creates a new String object with the same character sequence ("AA"). You can verify this with a little code...
    String s = new String("AA");
    assert s != "AA";
    assert s.equals("AA");
    assert s.intern() == "AA";~

If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences.  If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section.  Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.

  • SAP BW or BO ? Which is better and why

    Hi,
I dont know much about SAP BW so I am not able to compare which one is better.
It would be great if someone could help me comparing these tools.
Which one is better and why ?
If a user is already using SAP BW and planning to start using SAP BO what could be the features he would go for ?
I am thinking from the sales perspective for Business Objects to a BW user.
    Regards,
    Chinmay

    Hi,
Someone might be able to provide you with the comparitive chart or a tabular format to make you understand the differences but I would say that SAP itself has designed the roadmap for the product integration wherever it suited the needs.
I would like you go through the roadmap of SAP BI and BO integration and you would be able to yourself compare what is in and what is out and why.

    64 bit.
32 bit won't use all your computer's ram.
64 bit allows you to run 32 bit programs
    Your computer is 64 bit
    New programs use 64 bit.
There is no reason to use the 32 bit version of Windows.

  • I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like excel, word etc. 13"

I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like  microsoft office products ...excel, word etc.  I am new to the apple world and have liked the idea of the MAC Book Pro 13" but really dont know if this is good enough or if the computer will soon crash?
    13-inch: 2.6GHz
    with Retina display
    Specifications
    2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    512GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)2

That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.
Good luck in making your decision!!
