Which MacBook Pro Processor for Photoshop and IMovie Projects?

I am a fine art photographer. I use my compuer mostly for Photoshop work. I am now starting to do some video, but nothing too intensive. I am currently using IMovie. I doubt I will ever use finalcut but you never know. So I am planning to get a 15" MBP with Hi-Res screen. the question is which processor? Dpong alot of Photoshop work and a little IMovie, do you think I should get the I7 or should I jsut get the base model? Either way I will max out the ram. thanks
<Edited by Host>

The CPU isn't as important as you might think. The difference between the slowest and fastest CPU is barely 10% -- and Photoshop should offload a lot of work to the GPU (which is the same, save for the amount of VRAM) for all of them.
Performance-wise, you'd probably do better concerning yourself with the amount of RAM you have installed, and maybe the hard disk speed (best go for the 500G 7200RPM model, or even the 512G sold-state if you can afford it). More RAM and a faster disk will provide greater performance boost than the faster CPU.

Does anyone know how well the Intel Iris Pro installed on new 15" MacBook Pros performs using Photoshop and Lightroom?  I have seen some differing opinions out there, and I would rather not shell out the extra cash for the Nvidia if I don't have to. I mostly do photo editing for business and personal use. I have not used the 3D function in Photoshop, but I would like to know that I could.

  • We are having old home movies put on DVD's. How do we import them to MacBook Pro using Snow Leopard and iMovie 8.0.6.  Can watch the video, but can't get it to import.

We are having old home movies put on DVD's. How do we import them to MacBook pro using Snow Leopard and iMovie 8.0.6?  Can watch the movies on the laptop, but they will not import.

We took 3 video cassette 8mm that were recorded in the early 90's to a place that burned the videos onto 3 DVDs.  When inserted to our Mac, the DVD player comes on to play the DVD. Opened Quicktime, but can find no way to import. Went to File>Open File>Sony_DVD_Recorder_Volume. Clicked on Sony_DVD-Recorder_Volume and it shows a file named VIDEO_TS.  Clicked on that and 6 files showed VIDEO_TS.BUP,   VTS_01-0.BUP,   VTS_01_0.IFO,  VTS-01_1.VOB,   VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  Where is DVDxDV?

  • Is the NVIDIA processor in the 2014 MacBook Pro helpful for Photoshop?

I am in the market for a 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I am trying to decide between a few different models. Is the NVIDIA 750M Graphics Processor going to make any difference in my life, positive or negative? I use InDesign and Photoshop quite a bit, I am starting to do more coding and am always meaning to get back into Dreamweaver and learn Muse. I only edit video once every couple years, and it's always pretty low-stakes when I do. Will Photoshop see any benefit from the discrete graphics processor? If not now, should I be planning on it benefitting in the next five years or so? Alternately, would switching between the two processors actually hinder Photoshop's performance?
    Thanks!

This will give you an idea and help you decide what is best for your work. 1-2 GB vram is good.  2 GB vram would future-proofing it if requirements change.

  • Macbook pro retina for web and UI Design

HI, I am planing to buy a Macbook pro retina 15 inch late 2013 model. I am a UI Designer and mostly I am gonna use Photoshop CC or CS. So I am planing to get either rMBP 15' $1999 model which has i7 2.0 RAM 8GB and intel iris graphic card or rMBP 15' $2599 model which has i7 2.3 RAM 16GB and has dedicated graphic card NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. I dont know which one will work for me as a Photoshop user, I am working on a big files over 15MB with lots of layers in it. I dont want to spend extra $600 and get the same result as $1999 will give me so if you have any experience with macbook and photoshop please help. Thanks in advance

The new rMBP are not user upgradable. You are stuck with what you buy.
If you can afford it I would get the most I could, you will not be dissappointed. RAM is the best bang for your buck.

  • Which files need installation for Photoshop and Premiere Elements 9

In the list of files for download for the Photoshop and Premiere Elements 9 Plus package that I just purchased,
(Windows 7) there is a single "Premiere Content ALL" file of ~4.2GB.  There are also 6 files called "Premiere
    Content 1" (and 2 2nd 3), and "Premiere Content 1 HD" (and 2 and 3).
After smooth installs of the PSE and PRE programs proper, in doing the install of the "Premiere Content ALL"
file, it seems like the "Content 1-3 and 1-3 HD"  files were included in it (judging by the file nmes flashing on
the screen during the install, and in poking around in the install directory).
What I would like to know is: are the 6 Content 1-3 and 1-3 HD file included in the Content ALL file, and if so,
are they at the same revision level as what's in the Content ALL file.
I don't want to just try installing the individual Content files over the ALL file install, as that might well screw
    something or other up.
I tried getting an answer to this on the phone with Adobe support, but could not get an unambiguous answer
from either of the two support people I spoke to.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks ...
    /kim

Thanks for the reply.   The real question though was/is are ALL the files contained in the 6 separate content archive files
(Content 1, Content 2, Content 3, Content HD 1, Content HD 2, and Content HD 3) also contained in the single archive
    file called Content ALL?
Since I was unable to get a definitive answer to that question, I went ahead and downloaded all 7 of the Content archive
files, extracted all of the archived files in the *.7z files and compared the timestamps and sizes of the files in the 6 individual archives to the timestamps and sizes of the files from the "ALL" archive.   The files within the 6 archives matched those
    in the ALL archive.
And since the sizes of all 7 *.exe files are identical, I suspect they are all the same and simply invoke an unarchiver
for their respective 7z file, using their own filename as the argument to the builtin program.
The overall result is that I have verified to my own satisfaction that the contents of the 6 individual Content XX files
*are* contained within the single Content ALL file.
It would have been NICE if Adobe had bothered to TELL their customers that, so they wouldn't spend twice the time in
downloading 6 unnecessary files which in reality just duplicate the ALL file.   Plus in my case, spending an hour or
two verifying that the contents of the 6 files were also in the ALL file.   Sheesh.
    C'est la vie ...

  • Which Mac Pro config for PShop (and others)

Which processor config is best for Pshop multitaskers? Looking to choose a (new) Mac Pro. I am primarily a photo retoucher & photographer (in that order) But I also push my system doing 3D renderings, and often streaming Pandora while I work. Another forum offered suggestions to get the Quad core -and choose the 3.33Ghz 6 core "Westmere" (+ $1200) --as opposed to my first choice, which was the 8 Core w/two 2.4 Ghz "Westmere" processors. My goal is to keep the total cost under $4K -including additional RAM + ATI Radeon HD 5870. I chose the 8 core unit for the added RAM capability, and I thought that 8 cores would help when running multiple apps. But other posters had opined that since most apps -including Pshop (CS5) DON'T take advantage of multiprocessing the faster single processor w/6 cores would take the lead. I am a pro retoucher, and am often working multiple VERY large layered files. I do NOT do animation or video. I am also thinking of waiting for the next Mac Pro update -which past history suggests a possible late spring (2011) rollout. ( I wouldn't want a laptop as I work exclusively at my own studio, and want as much horsepower + longevity as I can afford)
Opinions appreciated -esp. real world tests using CURRENT Mac Pros. Thanks!

Yes, for best memory bandwidth performance, use 8 DIMMs, and it doesn't matter much what your mix and match is (other than certified of course for Mac Pro).

No need to every discard the Apple memory until you get the urge to go to more than 8GB. Buying a full set of same and same time insures that they are less likely to deviate or have enough difference to cause trouble (even Crucial batches vary a bit).
I prefer TechWorks as a cut above, quality is good as it gets, comparable to Micron.

Been working in iMovie 09 for 6 months with no problem. Decided to update the iLife package and qt today. Now iMovie won't boot.
    Any help?

    Dear IPeter,
My problem is similar. I can accept the 2 app, but the acceptation message is staying. If I try to accept again I get the message, that the apps were already accepted and in my purchases map. Which is the case. Problem on Imac 2013 and Yosemite.

  • When installing the new OS Lion, do you need to reinstall the programs currently on your Macbook Pro such as Photoshop and Lightroom?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks

It depends how you do it. If you do the auto update - i.e. you download Lion and let Mac OS do everything for you, then the answer is 'No'. It will try to install all apps that are compatible with Lion.
However, that may not be the best way to upgrade, especially if you have a lot of legacy material. I wrote a post on my blog about upgrading which you may want to consider: http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/10/17/upgrading-to-lion-the-golden-rules/

  • My 15" Macbook Pro running Yosemite keeps updating iMovie and iPhoto to one compatible with Yosemite the it updates again to the previous version that is not. Then it repeats itself.

My Macbook Pro keeps updating iPhoto and iMovie between the version compatible with Yosemite and the previous versions. It does it at least daily. Why doesn't the App store understand when those two programs have been updated?

I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro running OSX6.8 and cannot upgrade. I have a subscription to Adobe CC but none of these work on this so I was on with Adobe for 5 hours trying to install and launch Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Muse, and Acrobat Pro from CS6. Well, InDesign is the only one that works and I have a ton of work due! I don't have a serial number for Photoshop or Illustrator except for CS3, and they don't work. InDesign gave me no problems. Illustrator says it can't work on this machine. Photoshop needs a serial number. I'm stumped and getting anxious and freaked out. Can anyone help? Adobe Chat is down right now.

if you have a cc subscription, close ps > sign out and then back in to your cc desktop > open ps.
    ai cs6 requires:
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Adobe Creative Suite 5, CS5.5, and CS6 applications support Mac OS X v10.8 and v10.9 when installed on Intel-based systems.*
2 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
2 GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
    1024 x 768 display (1280 x 800 recommended) with 16-bit video card

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

I am going to university this fall for engineering and I was wondering which macbook pro (13 or 15 inch) would be better. Is the larger screen worth the extra weight ? I will be doing some computer programming and I feel like reading code on a smaller screen could be a bit of a pain. Also, what is the best option in terms of backup? I don't anticipate having a lot of video but I will have some pictures, music files as well as regular documents and spreadsheets. I'd also like to get an idea of how good the battery life is. Thanks in advance:)

The 13" will do the trick for what you describe as your needs, Be sure to consider how you will backup your data -- need an external drive?
Also be sure to check with your college or division of study to see what they recommend. If they are hostile to Macs, you may be on your own for finding support. But in most major cities, that will not be too hard.
