Which MacBook Pros are safe to buy used and not recalled for video graphics/display failure (due to overheating)?

I've had some bad luck with MacBook Pros lately. I bought a 2010 model but it was effectively a Total Loss because of a vehicle accident. From searching with Google, people have reported logic board failures. Who knows if mine would've failed, too.
Then I bought an older 2009 MacBook Pro and that eventually failed due to the graphics chip failure. There was a recall on it but the problem occured JUST after the recall period expired. I don't have a microwave solder lying around or a proper setup to fix the problem myself.
Now, I im in the market for a used MacBook Pro, as a gift (I can't afford a new one right now) (with the luck I have, I'm basically done with them but the person wants one).
I've seen some 2011 models priced quite attractively, which caused me to do a quick check and find that the (early) 2011 models also have video graphic failures. I don't get it. I understand paying for the name, but the name also has to have reliability and you don't hear about video graphics failures from some of the more well known PC manufacturers..just saying.
I'd strongly prefer to not purchase any retina models, if at all possible. I want a mechanical SATA HDD and an optical drive. I oppose proprietary components -- as I understand it, the retina models make it nearly impossible to upgrade.
Which used MacBook Pros are safe for purchase? In other words, which ones do not have recalls or are susceptible to video graphics/display failures? I don't want to put the money down for one, only to hear it kicked the bucket and it needs service and is out of warranty.
Thank you for your time.

Do you have the current MacOS X version 10.10.2?
Then you can simply move iPhoto from the Applications folder to the Trash,
sign into the App Store with your own AppleID
reload the "Featured" main page of the AppStore with ⌘R,
then download iPhoto with your own AppleID.
Make a backup of your iPhoto Library, before your launch the new iPhoto the first time,
If your current system is not Yosemite, you can only buy a boxed iLife 11 version of iPhoto to install it independent of the previous owner.

  • Which MacBook Pro w/ Retina to buy for Video Editing?

Hi, I am looking into buying a MacBook Pro for Video Editing. This is not my main machine because I already have an i7, 16GB  RAM, GTX 760 2TB HDD machine at home. My home machine beasts through  my daily editing but I am stumped on which MacBook is worth the money!
    I am comparing the...
    13" Retina with
    i7
    256 GB SSD
    16GB RAM
    Integrated Graphics
    for $1849 (with EDU discount)
    VS
    15" Retina with
    i7
    512 GB SSD
    16GB RAM
    GT 750m with 2GB DDR5 Memory
    for $2,479 (with EDU Discount)
I don't really care about the screen size, I'll be using thunderbolt storage anyways, I am mainly wondering if the GT 750m will make much of a difference in editing footage. Mainly AVCHD 1080p but also I'd like it to be able to handle 4k in small amounts. I would mainly use proxy's at that point but just in case. I also don't do a ton in After Effects, but may need to send some shots here and there of for VFX work. This is mainly for if I'm on the go and need to make an edit or I need to do photography work (Lightroom and Photoshop)
    Thanks,
    Cameron Gallagher

Both will work fine with 1080p AVCHD but you will notice an increase in performance simply because Premiere LOVES a good GPU and the 750M is a good one as far as laptops go. Yes, its more but if you're serious about performance go with the better GPU.
That being said...save a bit and go with this below (same as your 2nd option but cheaper):
Refurbished 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Quad-core Intel i7 with Retina Display - Apple Store (U.S.)
It'll save you $400. Bam! Thank me later. Apple's refurbished program is top of the line. Comes fully warrantied and you can get apple care, etc. if you want as well. It's like buying it new. These refurbished computers are often just ones bought and then returned within a few days by customers trying things out and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. They can basically be looked at like new.

  • Which macbook pro retina should i buy?

Hello guys! Im really not sure which macbook should i buy:
    1) Maccbook pro retina early 2013 with 256gb/8gb/hd 4000 or
    2) Later 2013 macbook pro retina with 128gb/4gb/iris graphics.
Im going to use it for photography and to edit videos, but nothing professional. And also for basic stuff that i need in university or even to play some games like simcity and the sims 3/4..
    What do u think guys?

I see you are choosing from the refurbished units.  Good move.
I would concentrate on RAM size, SSD size and of course price.  In my opinion those are bigger factors than the difference in GPUs.
4 GB of RAM is sufficient of most programs but some applications do better in 8 GB.  You cannot upgrade RAM and memory demands are likely to grow over time.  So 8 GB is future proofing the system.
A big question is do you need 128 or 256 GB of SSD?  How much storage do you use now?  How much more are you likely to use (more music, photos, videos…)?  If this will be near 100 GB then I would opt for 256 GBs of SSD.  The SSDs are not upgradeable while under warranty.
    Refurbished, Feb-2013, 8 GB, 256 GB, Intel HD Graphics 4000: $1,230.  <<<- #1 In your list
Refurbished, Oct-2013, 4 GB, 128 GB, Intel Iris Graphics: $1,100. <<<- #2 in your list
For the difference of $170 I would choose the 8/256 GB model.

  • Which macbook pro configuration should i buy for the non retina line?

i can't deside if it is worth it to upgrade to the 2.9GHz dual-core intel core i7 or stick with the stock one. Also im not sure if 8gbs of ram is going to be enough even though it is the max the cpu will allow. I am planning to use my Macbook pro for highschool, photo editing in Lightroom, Photoshop, and the usual like web browsing, email, etc (I'm not using Photoshop/Lightroom for my job btw just for a hobby). also i might be playing Minecraft and might be using Adobe Premiere pro for video editing. Please leave your options i'm getting it for christmas so the faster the better.

Someone please check my math.  The data I see places the rMBP with higher performance and lower cost than the MBP.
I looked at the MaBook Air (MBA), MacBook Pro (MBP), and Retina MBP (rMBP) price and performance and the 13”  rMBP appears to take the cake with the MBA in second place and the MBP a distant third.  The MBP has the slowest graphics and slowest standard processor for a higher price than either the rMBP or the MBA.  The MBP also weights more (4.5 lbs.) and has the worst battery life (7 hours).  An option in the MBP’s favor is it can have a slower but larger disk while the MBA and rMBP must use the smaller SSDs.
All the processor configurations below are (±10%) in speed compared to the MBA so processor speed is not a major differentiator.  However the graphics speeds differ significantly with the MBP at the bottom with an HD 4000, the MBA in the middle with an HD 5000, and the rMBP at the top with Intel Iris Graphics.
For lower price I would choose a 1.3 GHz i5 MBA with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD for $1,400.  For higher performance I would choose the 2.4 GHz i5 rMBP with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD for $1,700.  If I needed more than 256 GB of storage then I might consider the MBP with a 500 GB or 1 TB disk, but that would sacrifice performance both in graphics and I/O speed.   Instead of a larger system disk one could consider placing some of the storage on the 256 GB SSD and some on an external 1 TB hard disk.

    Which charger can I buy?

As far as anyone knows there is not a new standard macbook pro. Will there be, yes. When, no one knows. Will it have a dvd drive? Again no one knows. Those things only apple knows and they aren't telling.

    Uh, no....
However the 2012 line of MBPs have usb 3.0 ports.  Second, usb 3.0 is backwards compatible, but it operate at the slower usb 2/1.1 speed of whatever type of usb port it is attached to.

  • Time Machine error: The backup disk image "/Volumes/----/----MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use and resource unavailable?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" 2010 model running Mountain Lion. I have always been able to use Time Machine with my Time Capsule. Just today I have been receiving the same error message whenever I would back up my computer:
I removed my name before "MacBook Pro". It takes a long time "Looking for backup disk..." first. The disk I put with the time capsule is called Huge Backup, and in Huge Backup there is my sparsebundle file called "----- MacBook Pro." When I open Finder, open my time capsule, and then open my sparse folder, it should mount a drive where I can see my computer's backups. That doesn't work. Then I get this message:
I once again removed my name before "MacBook Pro" but I can open my sister's sparsebundle who is running Mountain Lion on the same network and her backups work fine. I have researched this topic and have tried to repair the disk in Disk Utility, remount all the drives, remove the drive and restart the backups, and even restart my computer and the Time Capsule. Nothing worked. It just was working yesterday, but now I get this in the settings along with a caution symbol in my menubar:
Is there anything I could do to fix this? Reconnecting it in AirPort Utility (5 or 6) didn't work. Also, for some reason, the error renamed Huge Backup to Huge Backup-1 as you can see above and below in the messages. I downloaded the Time Machine Buddy widget and this is the error report I got. I replaced my names or private info with [-----]. By the way, the network is called NDR Network, and the Time Capsule is alled NDR Time Capsule. Here's the error I keep getting:

  • Which Macbook Pro 2011 should I buy?

Hi, I have always used PC and will soon be buying my first Mac, However I'm quite confused as to whether I should buy a 13" Model maxed out or buy the 2.2ghz 15" Model? The thing is, the 13" model comes with dual core and 2.7ghz and the 15" model comes with quad core and 2.2ghz. I will mainly be using this for media consumption/production like iTunes, and school work. Any input would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

    Hi Matt,
It really depends on what you mainly do on your mac.  If you are really a heavy video and photo editor than the 15" MBP with 2.2GHz should be fine for you.  If you dont do as much photo or video editing stuff then the 13" models and the low end 15"model would serve you well.  What do you do on your mac?

  • Which macbook pro should i buy if i use finalcut7?the i5 or i7?

which macbook pro should i buy if i use finalcut7?the i5 or i7?

Either one will do the job.  The more powerful the CPU, the faster it will perform.  I suggest that if the budget is tight, go for the i5, if not go for what the bank account will allow.
It is nice to have a fast CPU, but they are not essential to the overwhelming applications that most people use, especially in a non-vocational context.  On this forum there are the 'speed freaks' who will tout the virtues of faster CPUs, yet most have never compared two MBPs side by side and experienced the differences of real world results.
    Ciao.

  • Which Macbook Pro to buy as a college student?

There are 3 different Macbook Pro's out there that I can buy with the rebate / reduced price / free iPod Touch. The problem is I don't know which one to buy. Many people said that the difference between a 2.4 and 2.5 core 2 duo cpu is only 5%. Then there is a bit of difference from 256mb to 512mb of the 8600m graphics card.
Basically I will outline what I will be needing from a laptop so you guys can help me make the right decision. But for now before I say what the outline is, you bought your Macbook Pro; did you choose the right one? If you didn't and you could go back in time, which one would you have bought?
Anyways, obviously the laptop is for college work. So Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Photoshop and such. But of course there will be some gaming here and there. I am a Blizzard fanatic and I only play Blizzard games. From diablo 2, starcraft and now Warcraft 3 is pretty much all I play. I am not even going to try WoW as it could probably ruin my college carreer.
But the game I'm really anticipating is Starcraft 2. Which Macbook Pro would be able to handle that game in your opinion?
But I hope these information is good enough so you guys will know which one I should buy. But if you guys have any other questions on what I will be using the MBP for then let me know so I can help you help me pick the right decision.
    Thanks!

If you're going to use your new laptop for college use/gaming/general use, my recommendation is going for the $1799 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz. I recommend this one over the others for a few reasons. As mentioned previously, the 0.1GHz in processor speed in essentially unnoticeable. With regard to RAM, its always best to have your system maxed out in order to achieve its full capacity. However, I do recommend going through www.otherworldcomputing.com or a 3rd party RAM merchant to purchase your additional RAM. You can get it for a drastically reduced price there, and then have an AASP install it for you. Bear in mind that installing RAM yourself could void your warranty. My point about the RAM is, the 2GB standard in the $1799 MBP version is sufficient. Also, the graphics card. 256MB should be sufficient to support your gaming, and unless you plan on getting a large display, it shouldn't be necessary to double the VRAM. So, based on the information you provided, the lower-end model should be plenty enough for your needs. Hope this helps.

  • Which macbook pro to buy for editing?

I will be buying a macbook pro for my future editing as i will be traveling a lot. I use after effects, premiere pro, sometimes fcp 7 and occasionaly blender and cinema 4d. I will be watching a lot of movies and playing games occasionaly. I have a late 2009 imac with 4 gigs of ram, 3.06 ghz dual core processor, 500gb hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB. It is quite slow in rendering. I use full hd footage and put effects in my videos such as muzzle flashes or maybe a planet in the sky(that kind of stuff). What software requirements do you guys recommend for a faster editing and rendering? I am ok if it takes some time in rendering but ofcourse not ages. And also which macbook pro do you guys recommend (also from the previously manufactured mcbp)?
    Thanks in advance.

Both will work fine with 1080p AVCHD but you will notice an increase in performance simply because Premiere LOVES a good GPU and the 750M is a good one as far as laptops go. Yes, its more but if you're serious about performance go with the better GPU.
