Which memory for MBP 2.16, Core 2 Duo

If this has been answered before than just point me in the right direction.
I now have a MBP and am contemplating going to higher memory . That said the local apple store says use there memory, or ramjets ? OK, and to stay away from 3rd party memory, out of which I found GSKill on Newegg for I think 62 bucks and up ( 1 gig ). POINT being who would you buy from and WHY?
I really cant justify the 2 gig upgrage and go to 3 gig total.
But here's the thing, Stay with Apple memory? Samsung memory or Ramjet or go 3rd party . Warranty is NOT really a big deal, they all have lifetime,
I do NOT use any intense app's for the memory but am looking down the road at CS3 and DW, Flash, and Database Apps and Internet apps running. I just want to be able to do things properly and have the necessities there, and not have to worry about it later on down the road...........
Thank you for your time and knowledge.

I went for 2 1gb sticks from Optival via Ramseeker and it cost me $140. I know people all over the place here say to not use cheap ram, but in the 6 years and through the numerous Apple machines I've owned, I've always used whatever ram (that has a lifetime warranty) is the cheapest option and I've never had a problem. I once did use Micron from Crucial and there was zero performance difference, though it cost me more than twice what the bottom market price was. I should note that I have done heavy video editing and all sorts of memory-intensive stuff while using this "cheap" ram. The way I look at it, if you pay more you get a certain - albeit somewhat false - peace of mind that the ram will hold up, say 99% with something like Crucial, 96% with Optival; or that 1 of a 100 people will get crap from Crucial, 1 of 25 (and that's probably a pessimistic ratio at that) from Optival. The performance will be identical, it's just whether you're a worrier or not. I am not, at least not about memory. Plus, if something is going to fail due to poor construction, it will likely do so very soon after installing it, and then a lifetime warranty acts as the great equalizer.

  • Mid-2009 MBP, 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, NVIDIA GeForce 9600 512 MB can't run Windows 8?

    I  have a 17"  mid-2009 MacBook Pro with a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M
GT 512MB.  Recently upgraded to OS X MAvericks 10.9.4.  I wish to run 3DS MAx Design using Boot CAmp.
The Boot Camp Assistant, downloading the Windows installers says my system can only run Windows 7.  [The newly-opened Windows 8.1 disc is right here.]  Can this be right?  Might you please identify the weak point?  Should I upgrade?  Is the memory the reason?  Is the assistant wrong?  What should I do.
Using 3ds max, would it be wise to upgrade the memory in any case.  When the correct Windows softyware is determined and installed,  how large should I set the partition.  Thank you for helping me.

Thanks, Kappy.  Please, I'd read those system requirements before; I still don't understand where my system falls short.  Both 7 and 8 stipulate a 1GHz processor.  Graphics card I don't know the difference.  So it's memory- I have insufficient accesible memory?  If my purpose is to manipulate highly featured images, should I upgrade memory in any case.  Does it make much difference whether it's 7 or 8?  Some places I know my footing.  Here, not.  Step by step.  Thanks!

  • Printing problem for MBP 2.16 Core duo

just got this sweet thing. was running a G4 iBook and printing easily to an HP 2600 color laser.
in switching to the MBP, tho, I can still print but in MS Word, the text is shrunk to 30% of actual size. In preview, everything is fine but the output continues to stay small.
i've looked thru all the preferences and the print utility app but have found nothing to make an adjustment to.
    any help greatly appreciated! TIA

  • Memory use imac 8.1 core 2 duo 32 bit.

Hello I have an imac 8.1 at work that is currently on 10.6.7 with 4gb of ram. (First time actually work working with macs) I need to use Vmware fushion to run a program for a co worker. (win 7) However as this mac is older it's bogging it down. I have reset the memory allocation still to slow. My question is do 32 bit machines for mac still have the memory cap as windows xp did or can I swap out some memory to 8gb? If not does lion support greater memory addressing? I'm wondering how macs treat VM's as an application or as an actual virtual machine so the address spacing is different.

That model can accommodate up to 6 GBs of RAM. If you want optimum performance get rid of Fusion and install Parallels which is generally much faster with Windows applications.
Also be careful with configuring the VM. Do not allocate any more than 1/2 of the installed RAM. Since the iMac model you have is only a Core 2 Duo model limit the processor cores for the VM to one. Windows' memory cap issues are Windows, not the Mac's.
That machine would not be better off running Lion as far as the VM is concerned. You are limited by fact that you can only allocate one core to the VM.

  • MBP 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo, CPU temp constant 90 degrees C at high load

I have a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo MBP. Not sure which chipset, but not Santa Rosa. I'm still running 10.5.2 because I don't want to stop the process I'm running at the moment.
Anyhow, I'm running both CPUs at full load, and the program I'm running is very SSE-heavy. iStatPro reads the CPU as running at 90 degrees C with the fans running at about 3800RPM. It's been running like this for several days straight because this is the fastest compute hardware I own. I have three PC case fans pointing at the notebook, so the exterior is relatively cool, as are the other temp readings, but the CPU temp makes me nervous. Various things I've read suggest that about 85C isn't so healthy for the processor. Is that true?
I did try calling Apple Care, but they basically blew me off, suggesting I use external cooling. I could take it to the Genius bar, but that'll be a good 3 hours of my time, so I need to make sure it's worth it.
    Comments?
    Thanks.

See this article regarding runaway applications:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304882
and use that technique to make sure that no other heavy applications are crashing the party. There will be a number of smaller system apps and processes running; you're looking for a big hitter that you did not want.
I hear that the MBP is good for 100°C/ 212°F. I'm a little surprised that you're getting only 3800 rpm at 90°. Fans should be able to turn up to 6000 rpm. You may wish to download smcFanControl.
I use that program to increase the resting rpm from 2000 to about 2500 to give a head-start on any heat issues. At 2500, the fans are not noticeable unless I put my ear an inch from the the computer. The program also has a quick-change setting that lets you quickly bump the fan speed to the max of 6000 if things get too hot too fast.

  • MBP 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo - Backlight off when booting to restore DVD

    Hi all!
I have a very interesting issue and I'm not sure what to make of it.
I have a MBP 15" (Core 2 Duo, Aluminim, NOT unibody) that shipped with 10.5.  I am restoring the OS with a 10.5 upgrade DVD (was not able to find my original restore disc for the unit).  Unit boots into the OS properly, all hardware works to spec.  However, when I boot to the DVD, the backlight goes out once the DVD is done loading.  There's no inconsistency, it doesn't "come back on if i wiggle it," nothing of the sort. If I cold boot the laptop and restart, the backlight works without issue.  Any ideas on what's causing this?
    Thanks!

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • MBP 15" intel core 2 duo keeps crashing with distorted screen

Why does my macbook pro 15" intel core 2 duo keep on freezing or crashing with a distorted screen?
It doesn't seem to give any pattern when it randomly crashes. According to the hardware test, there's no problem.
But after doing the full hardware test everything seems ok again for  a few days then crashes again with a distorted screen. Has anyone else out there experienced this as well? Help please!

Like i said in the first post, i already did the SMC reset. This is very strange because sometimes the macbook can stay up with no problems for a very long time, like 24 horas staright and nothing happens. Than i put two 720p videos that have a 30 minutes duration and nothing happen also. The fans worked like **** but it keep together. So i don't know. Does the graphic card have a so random behaviour like that? I can't find the scenario that triggers that black bars and freeze it happens from time to time.
Can somebody help me? At least to find out what triggers tha behaviour.

  • Can 15" MBP 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo (MA896LL) support 6GB RAM?

    Hello all,
I recently upgraded my mid-2007 15" MBP 2.4 C2D to Mavericks and I would like to increase its RAM from 2+2 GB to 2+4 GB to satiate its appetite for memory.  OWC states that this laptop supports 6GB but I've see Apple and Crucial specifications state that 4GB is the maximum.  Can someone please clarify this?
BTW  I will also scrub my machine clean of EtreCheck-highlighted issues.
    Thanks,
    Ira

Mavericks is SO much happier with 6GB than with 4GB!  I put the Crucial 4GB module CT51264AC667 into slot 0 and left the OWC 2GB module in slot 1.  I then used Onyx to clear all the caches and I was off an running!  The System Information memory report is below.

  • What's with the obsession for the new MB Core 2 Duo?

I just don't understand why many MB users are crying about the Macbook C2D which just came out today. I don't see much of improvement of this generation compared to the 1st one. Seems to me the only major change is just the CPU, which generally gives you what, 10% of speed difference, from the reviews ive read (the advertised 25%? I don't think so.). How many of you can really tell the difference?
The performance bottleneck of the Macbook is at the graphic card, not the CPU. If Apple had released the Macbook C2D with a dedicated graphic card, even if it was just an x1300 or an old-school x300, I would say this is a great buy and I would regret for my purchase of the old macbook a few months back, too. But unfortunately, that's not what just happened.
Anyway, looking at the new macbook C2D today, I'm still quite happy with my old macbook. Not a thread of regret at all. What about you guys?

The big deal is the 64-bit capability of the new chip. Being that Leopard is being advertised as being a fully 64-bit capable OS, there's a possible performance benefit in the future, along with more RAM capacity for the Mac Pro's. As of now, there's no reason to rush out and get one if you've got an "old" model.
In fact, I'm wondering if there won't be another refresh with Leopard that offers the newer PRE-N wireless chips like in the pro models for support for the next-gen Airport. Thus, I don't think I'm going to bite on this new model. I believe the next refresh will offer a lot more in term of new features and performance.

  • MBP 17" intel core 2 duo 2.4ghz 4 Gb ram needs to be started and restarted at least 3 times from when it is shut down before properly running.

On the first couple of attempts it freezes just as it has almost fully loaded the desktop. Then needs to be restarted by holding start button and the process repeated a couple of times at least.
    Any ideas Why?

How much free space on the HD?  If less than15%, OSX is cramped for "play room" to perform tasks, such as buffering program data at startup.  All of the processes starting up at the same time could overload "too little free space".

  • Why is the boot time on my mac pro 2010 slower than my 2010 core 2 duo 13 mbp?

Why is the boot time on my mac pro with clean install of lion around 34 sec on my mac pro 2010 2.8 quad core, when it is only around 17 sec on my 13 mbp 2.67 core 2 duo?
The mac pro uses around 13 seconds from i hit the power button til i hear the chime and see the grey screen.
Is it because it uses time to find the wireless keyboard, trackpad and cinema display?
Mac pro has 16 gb ram and 240 gb ocz agility 3 ssd, macbook pro has a intel 120 gb ssd (320 i think) and 8 gb of ram, so the mac pro has more umpf....

Well it might take a little longer since POST (power-on self test) needs to check more memory.
But try doing a smc and pram reset and see if that helps.

  • Is the MBP Core 2 Duo worth it?

    Hi all
I currently have a 17 inch MacBook Pro Core Duo (about 14 months old). I a considering buying a new MBP with the Core 2 Duo -- will I notice an improvement in speed/operations/general use. Is the new screen better?
    Thanks

    hannyhan,
Check out the website I provided a few replies up on this topic.
They did some speed tests between the 2.2 and the 2.4 versions and even tested the graphics cards. From what the results showed there was some relative gains to get the 2.4. However, alot also depends on what you'll use the MacBook for. If it's for gaming you might fair better with the 2.4 and the 256MB graphics card.
I use my 2.2 MBP to cut video with FCE and, frankly, I'm satisfied with the performance.
