Which model Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch should I buy?

I am looking for a macbook pro retina 15 inch. I want a macbook pro with a dedicated graphics card, I was considering the new 2014 baseline model macbook pro retina but it does not have the dedicated graphics. I am now considering the old 2012 macbook pro retina with the Nvidia GeForce 650m graphics (baseline). I am wondering if this might be a good choice for me because I don't want to spend too much money on the purchase and if there is a big difference between those two models.

Dat,
What is your budget?  Knowing that may limit the possibilities and make things easier to provide options.
The only model with dedicated graphics is the 15" retina for $2600.
I think I would go for the 2012 model if you can find one.

  • I bought a macbook pro a month ago and didnt know there was a better/newer model (macbook pro retina) - can I upgrade/take back my macbook and get the new one?

When they told me about it I just thought it had a better display and decided it didn't bother me if the resolution was better, not knowing that it was thinner, has a HDMI connection, etc.
I bought my macbook pro 13 inch exactly a month ago tomorrow. If I go back and tell them this will I be able to upgrade my laptop? I paid more than $1300 or something for this one, I'd be willing to pay up to the price of the retina model, do you think I'd be able to do this?

If your non retina MBP has a dvd slot and a large capacity conventional hard drive, you might find the retina model would have been less convenient with lower capacity SSD and no DVD.
On the other hand, the MacBook Pro with Retina display has got a much faster drive and you can get an external DVD drive (not everybody needs a DVD drive)
Absolutely, like I say personal Choice.  I believe from remarks in here that the SSD boots up on Mavericks in something like 10 seconds whereas mine takes even longer to boot than in Mountain Lion. But then we are advised to use sleep over boot as much as possible.  My problem is I have 300GB of stuff and getting bigger, and when I bought mine the biggest SSD was 250 I think. For me the choice of replaceable RAM vs soldered-in RAM was a clincher.

  • Should I get the base model MacBook Pro Retina 13" (2.4ghz/8gb/256gb) or is it worth upgrading the processor to the 2.6ghz

I'm looking to get a new computer and would like the the retina display. I do a fair amount of video editing and photo editing. I was wondering if the faster processor would make a difference. I was also looking at the refurbished 15" retinas and didn't know if that would be better for me or not.

If you need photo and video editing, go for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display won't work correctly for what you want to use the MacBook for, as it has only got an integrated GPU, and some photo and video editing applications are not compatible with these GPUs.
Instead, the 15-inch MacBook Pro has got a quad-core processor and two GPUs, one for the general use and another one for tasks that require extra performance, so it will work better. If you don't mind losing performance to save money, go for the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and note that you have 14 days to return the MacBook Pro if it doesn't meet your needs

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro - Pristine Condition - should I buy?

I'm a PC user -- not a conscious decision, just what I started and stuck with because it was easier. I've always salivated at the thought of having a Mac, but it was always cost-prohibitive.
HOWEVER, I' have the opportunity now to buy an early 2011 MacBook Pro -- standard 4GB RAM, 500 HD, non-retina, you MAC users know the specs without me spelling it out. This machine is in pristine condition -- they barely used it. Literally not a scratch on it. I took it for a diagnostic at a local computer repair store and they verified the battery and hard drive were in supreme condition. The seller was originally asking $750, but because she knows me she's willing to come down to my budget of $600. I've checked eBay selling prices and this seems fair especially considering the condition, but I thought I'd check with you experts first. My other real question is, I'm a photographer and would like to use this machine mainly for programs like Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe suite of products -- what kind of upgrades would I have to make to the machine so that those programs would run smoothly? The first things someone suggested was upgrading to 16GB of RAM -- that's an extra $200 right there. Would it be better to look for a newer machine?
    Thanks in advance.

    Well I ran it here:

So if it is indeed a 2012 then that's a great deal. Did you verify that it is a 2012? Because there are issues with the 2011s. You can run the serial number here and verify the year:

I would at least bump the RAM to 8 GB and install an SSD from OWC:

  • I need to buy a new hard drive for my MacBook Pro. What should I buy?

Should I buy a 2TB SATA Hard Disk Drive Kit for Mac Pro? Or is this just a kit and not the drive?

Or is this just a kit and not the drive?
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but the nature of your question implies that you should shop for one from a company well known to support Macs, can help you decide what you need, how to install it, and provide free technical support should you require it. OWC / MacSales can do all that and their prices are as good as any you are likely to find from anyone else.

I need help should i buy a new laptop or should i just stick with my apple macbook from 2008?

if you're happy with your Mac, and it's running like it should, keep using it.
On the other hand, the new Mac OS X Mavericks is due out sometime this fall. If you're thinking of a new Mac you may want to wait until you can purchase one with Mavericks pre installed.

  • Fan like noise - Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch - late 2013 model

If I open Frontline Commando (game app) my brandnew Mackbook pro make fan like noise. (annoying and scary) Could anyone advice please?
    my sys configuration:
Model - Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch - late 2013 model
    RAM - 8 GB
    Processor - 2.4 GHz intel core i5
    OS - OS X 10.9.1

Normal during gaming use, fan noise.
A: you notice it more in a quiet room (the typical case) which is normal, all is AOK
B: fuzz and dust has caked onto the blades causing the fan hub to get off balance and make a buzzing sound.
C: fan rotor is going bad and making a whirring or buzz noise (rare).
D: Fan is spinning up due to excess heat from gaming, heavy graphics gaming (typical, all is OK)
    A and D are normal
    B and C are not.

  • Which Macbook Pro retina do I get?

I've been spending a lot of time reading topics about people asking what Macbook Pro Retina they should get, but I'm still not completely sure which one I need. I'm deciding between the 2.3 GHz with the 256gb ssd and the 2.6 with the 512gb ssd. Either way I'm going to get 16gb ram. I'm getting the laptop for college, so I'll be using it for surfing the web, watching HD movies, doing some video editing, typing documents, and playing games, such as Crysis 2, Batman Arkham City, Diablo III, etc. Also, I'm planning on bootcamping extensively (so I can play those games).
My main concern is whether the 256gb ssd will cut it, and whether the extra ssd space and the .3 ghz increase in cpu speed is really worth the huge chunk of cash I'd have to pay, or whether I'd be better off with an external drive. On my current laptop, I already have over 80gb in just movies, and games alone would take up around 70gb. Also, I'll be keeping this laptop for around 4 years, so I want it to last.
Also, if I get an external hard drive, I'm looking at the Buffalo Ministation 1TB Thunderbolt
    Thanks for your help guys,
    Krad

Sure, you can do that, but IMO, an internal drive less than 500GB's, is too small. Especially since it can't be upgraded...at least at the present, anyway. A bit of advice: never plan things based on vaporware...IE, that someone will figure out how to upgrade the hard drive on a Retina. But, many users do just fine with the 256GB drive, & you may as well.
At the end of the day, it's your money, your computer, so whatever decision you make will be correct for you.

  • I can't be the only one with this issue. MacBook Pro Retina Late-2013 WiFi disconnects after waking up from sleep.

Did anyone buy a MacBook Pro Retina 13" from Best Buy this Black Friday?
I'm having an issue where the WiFi disconnects after the MacBook wakes from sleep but only after a couple of minutes.
Once the WiFi disconnects, I can't reconnect to the same network and sometimes it won't find nearby networks.
I have to turn off the WiFi and wait for at least 5 seconds before turning it back on for it to auto-reconnect to my home network.
If I wait less than 5 seconds, it will continue to attempt connection to the home network but won't connect.
I've tried reformatting and deleting my network configurations as well as resetting my modem, power cycling it, etc.
    I am using 2Wire Gateway modem/router from AT&T on b/g network.
I've tried connecting to a friend's network under Time Warner Cable and the same issue occurs.
I exchanged the MacBook at a Best Buy for a brand unopened one (I hope) and the same exact thing happens with this new one.
Really, I can't be the only one with this issue. Unless in a 0.00001% chance I received two defective units in a row?
Please.. does anyone have a clue why this is happening?

You're definitely not the only one.  I have the same issue.  I spent 6 hours over multiple days on the phone with Apple support trying a variety of things (some of which are mentioned above), and none of them worked.  They finally sent me a replacement laptop.  I made sure to try it periodicaly as I was moving files and installing applications to see if I ran into it again and things seemed okay at first but now I am running into the same issue and it is terribly annoying.  I've got 5 other devices that connect to the same router and I've never had this issue with any of them.
My router is a Linksys E2000.  I haven't tried changing the router channel but I have tried to cnnecting to other networks in the building I live in and I have run into the same issue there.

  • MacBook Pro (retina display)is it upgradeable

    You have 14 days exchange

    802ac wifi, very very fast
    Haswell cool running processor
    Longer batt life
    Lightweight form factor

Overall a better machine to have yes

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • HT201300 What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch early 2011 model to an external projector so it will display the computer screen image through the projector?

What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch, early 2011 model to an external projector so the project displays the image on the computer screen?

You will need a cable or adapter with a minidisplay connection for the MBP.  That will be inserted in the Thunderbolt port.  The other end is dependent upon the connections of the projector which you have not listed.
    Ciao.

  • Which macbook pro retina should i buy?

Hello guys! Im really not sure which macbook should i buy:
    1) Maccbook pro retina early 2013 with 256gb/8gb/hd 4000 or
    2) Later 2013 macbook pro retina with 128gb/4gb/iris graphics.
Im going to use it for photography and to edit videos, but nothing professional. And also for basic stuff that i need in university or even to play some games like simcity and the sims 3/4..
    What do u think guys?

I see you are choosing from the refurbished units.  Good move.
I would concentrate on RAM size, SSD size and of course price.  In my opinion those are bigger factors than the difference in GPUs.
4 GB of RAM is sufficient of most programs but some applications do better in 8 GB.  You cannot upgrade RAM and memory demands are likely to grow over time.  So 8 GB is future proofing the system.
A big question is do you need 128 or 256 GB of SSD?  How much storage do you use now?  How much more are you likely to use (more music, photos, videos…)?  If this will be near 100 GB then I would opt for 256 GBs of SSD.  The SSDs are not upgradeable while under warranty.
    Refurbished, Feb-2013, 8 GB, 256 GB, Intel HD Graphics 4000: $1,230.  <<<- #1 In your list
Refurbished, Oct-2013, 4 GB, 128 GB, Intel Iris Graphics: $1,100. <<<- #2 in your list
For the difference of $170 I would choose the 8/256 GB model.
