Which network to choose - Mysterious Apple networks

I´m using the Airport Express and it keeps dropping of the internet or jumping to different networks which then drops the connection to the web.
I´ve chosen from the Network settings the Prefered Networks instead of Automatic.
BUT...how do I know to which network I should connect to? In the list of available networks there are many networks: Apple Network 5c7a77, Apple Network 788db1, Apple Network f6d7dc, 8e26, 923c, The Saahir Express Network.
How do I know which is mine and how can I avoid the Airport to jump to other networks?
thanks in advance

Sorry again for not following..."connect the Express directly to the Mac"? But somehow I must establish a connection between the modem and the Airport Express.
This is how it´s now setup now:
Cable from wall to modem, from modem a cord to Airport Express, from Express wireless connection to computer.

  • Mystery open network

I'm using an airport extreme as an access point with two windows computers.  I set up only one network and made it secure.  But windows is listing a second network, which is not secured, called Apple Network x2c986 (characters changed for security purposes). This open network is not listed in the airport utility. I'd like to know what it is and how to secure it.
My network is physically configured like this:
cable modem <-> apple airport extreme (ethernet).
    AAE <-> WinXP laptop (ethernet)
AAE <->WinXP laptop <-> Windows 7 laptop (wireless)
The secure network has wpa2-personal security, aes encryption and a security key. The Apple network has none of these. I can apply wpa2-personal security, aes encryption and the security key in the Windows securitiy properties window, but  what am I securing and can doing so mess up my network?
    Thanks for any help.
    Ellen

But windows is listing a second network, which is not secured, called Apple Network x2c986
This is one of two things:
    1) Another user near you has an Apple device that they have not set up yet. Normally, you would "see" the device in AirPort Utility if you connect to the network.  Is that the case? Can you connect to this network?  If yes, best to leave well enough alone. Someone is foolish enough to leave their network open and use default names for their network.
    2) Apple routers use the Apple Network xxxxxx network name to set up the device using wireless. This might have been your AirPort device and the computer is "remembering" the old previous connection. If you try to connect to the this network, but nothing happens, then this is the default network that your device produced before you configured it.

  • Joining, NOT extending, a non-apple network

I just bought an Airport Express (N) for the purpose of using it to do Airplay.  Just Airplay, no extending networks.
I have a not-Apple network (ASUS router running Tomato), so I do not expect "extend" to work easily.
When I ask airport utility (6.3.1) for Other options, it offers "Add to an existing network", which I choose, and
it reports that it will "Set up this AirPort Express to join or extend an existing Wi-Fi network".
However, when I then click "Next", it declares that  "This AirPort Express will be set up to extend "mynetwork" ".
    WRONG.
This AirPort Express will be set up to require a factory reset, because it cannot extend my non-standard network, and does not offer me the option to only join the network.  It will get wedged.  That is not at all what I want, but that us what WILL happen (I have tried this several times, I have tried dorking around with my Tomato wireless network to do WDS, to not do WDS, etc.
I tried to download 5.6 to see if that would work, but no, not on Mountain Lion.
I have tried holding down the option key while probing various menus and panes, but not luck there, either.
Are there any incantations, either on the Apple side or the Tomato side, that might work?
I still have 14 days to return this white brick.

I tried to download 5.6 to see if that would work, but no, not on Mountain Lion
You have to use a workaround to do this, but there are no guarantees, since Apple does not support this.

  • Using an AE with a non-Apple network

    Hello,
I have a new 802.11n airport express that I would like to use solely for streaming music from an ipod touch to my stereo (airtunes). The problem is that I am sharing wireless with my neighbor (yes sharing, not stealing, he gave me his password), and I would like to get the AE on that network, which is a non-apple network. Since I don't want to use the AE for internet I could just set it up with it's own network without internet and run airtunes that way. Unfortunately, in order to connect to it I believe I would have to disconnect from my neighbor's wireless network which would take me offline. This would be fine if I was playing music stored on my ipod touch, but I mostly play music through Spotify which requires an internet connection. So instead I would like to figure out how to join the AE to my neigbor's non-apple network using his network pretection info he gave me. Is this straightforward or do I have to change the settings to a different mode, like ProxySTA? Will it even work at all with a non-apple network?
This is a ski house I am renting for the winter and I am currently not up there, so I am trying to figure this out before the season starts.
Thanks so much for any help.
    Sam

I would like to figure out how to join the AE to my neigbor's non-apple network using his network pretection info he gave me.
To join the wireless network, you would choose the option during setup of the AirPort Express (AX) to "Join a wireless network" and follow the guided step by step configuration process.
You will need to know the exact type of wireless security that is being used on the wireless network and the password for the network. You probably already know the password, but you will need to tell the AX what type of security settings it should use during the setup.
Unfortunately, there is just no way to set up the AX for the task that you want in advance because it needs to "see" the wireless signal before you can begin to configure the device.

Why do I continue to have difficulty connecting to WiFi from my iPhone5? It rarely even picks up signals from networks when my other apple products work.

    Hey CEW724,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with Wi-Fi connectivity on your iPhone 5. The following resource may help to resolve your issue:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    1. Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
    2. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
    3. Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    4. Restart your iOS device.
    5. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    6. Tap  and Forget this Network.
    7. Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
    8. Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
    9. Update your device to the latest version of software.
    10. Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Unable to locate a Wi-Fi network
    1. Verify that the network is available by tapping Settings > Wi-Fi and choosing from the available networks. Note: It may take a few seconds for the Wi-Fi network name to appear.
2, Move closer to your wireless router (access point) and attempt to locate the Wi-Fi network.
    3. If you do not see the network you would like to join, you may be attempting to connect to a hidden network. Learn how to join a hidden network.
    4. Supported Wi-Fi configurations vary by iOS device model. Find out which standardsyour device supports3.
    5. Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
              - previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
              - recently used Bluetooth accessories
              - VPN and APN settings
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Compatibility between windows 8 and apple networks?

    Hi,
I have a apple network set up at my parent's house that has worked marvelously for the past years. THe network has a time capsule and two airport express. Unfortunately not everyone at my house is an apple user, and my stepdad just got a new HP laptop with Windows 8 and it doesn't seem to be connecting properly to the wifi network.
ANy idea why this is? is it a problem with the firmware? windows 8? the airports? the time capsule?
    Thanks!

Windows does not handle the names that apple tends to default to.. so make sure all names are..
    short.. 10-20 characters
no spaces.. they are not valid in windows networking
pure alphanumeric.. the apple default is to use apostrophe.. not at all liked by windows.
That unfortunately means a full reset of the whole system if it is non-compliant.
A different solution is to simply buy a cheap wireless router.. say TP-Link WDR3600, which is about $80 here.. and probably cheaper in US.. or even cheaper model, like 1043ND.. which is about $50 and run it as AP only plugged into the TC by ethernet.

  • Windows 2000 laptop can connect to unsecured Apple network, but not w/WEP

I have a PC laptop running Windows 2000 with a Linksys WPC54GS wireless network adapter. I am running two Apple Expresses as one network. This is a healthy network and most everything I need to do works.
However, I can't connect to this network unless I turn off security entirely. Well, to be exact, I know it doesn't work (yet) with 128-bit WEP, and I haven't tried the 40-bit WEP (and don't especially want to). I tried switching to a 13-character password and getting the hex equivalent of it for use as the password on the laptop, but still no joy. The Linksys application on the PC lets you generate 4 different keys from a text password. I tried that too and tried all 4 different keys, and that doesn't work either.
    Any ideas?

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

Only Windows XP has native support for wireless networking.
Other versions of Windows do not have native support for wireless networking.
What this means is that, unlike Windows XP, you can not plug in a wireless adapter and expect Windows to recognise it and start working.
You will need to install some kind of software configuration utility that came with the adapter. Each manufacturer has their own software so as a result the process of using these utilities to connect a Windows (non-XP) computer to an Airport wireless network will be different and so no generic guide is available.
Having said that you may find the following information on things to watch for useful.

  • How to connect pcs to secured apple network?

My girlfriend has two pcs, one for work and one for personal use.  She is able to connect to my apple network if it is the automatic, unsecured setting but if I setup a secured network it seems to be nearly impossible her to connect.  We have tried the WEP 13 character password, which we understand is almost useless.  We have tried the WPA2 13 character password also.  Does anyone have any knowledge of this problem?  It does not seem to be a very common issue because I am not able to find any answers which make it work yet.

No guarantees, but this worked perfectly on my sister's XP machine.
    On your Mac......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select your Apple router and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Change the setting for Wireless Security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
Use an 8 character password consisting only of of numbers and lower case letters with no spaces
    Click Update to save settings
Restart the PC and try to log on.
If still no luck, the Windows FireWall settings likely need to be checked by a PC guy who understands them. The anti-virus program may also be blocking the connection.

  • FAX through HP laser jet 3050 which is connected on a Windows Network. I m also connected to this Network and i print through HP LJ 3050. How can i sent fax through HP LJ 3050?

HOW can i sent FAX through HP laser jet 3050 which is connected on a Windows Network.
I m also connected to this Network and i print through HP LJ 3050. How can i sent fax through HP LJ 3050?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Apparently there is no HP software support for the HP 3050 fax or scan functions with OS X 'Lion' 10.7:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02950970 #A1
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?&objectID=c0292511 4
    Alternatives?
    1) Run a Windows client on the Mac using Boot Camp or one of the available virtualization programs like Parallels, VMware Fusion, and others so you can run the latest Windows print/fax/scan driver.
    2) If your Mac hardware supports an older OS X version, downgrade to one (Snow Leopard?) that still had support for print, fax and scan.
    3) Buy a newer printer. A 2007 model is 5+ years old, and should now be fully depreciated in a business.

  • Apple network vs wifi

Seems like I am able to use a wifi network other than my own to connect to the internet.
When I try to connect using my apple network with password using ethernet cable broadband the system does not connect. Yet when I chose a network like LINKSYS on my apple tv I can connect to the internet easily. Why is that?

What do you mean Apple network? A base station? if so which one? There are 5 out there. You have the two time machine backup N-routers, the reular n router, the g UFO router and the airtunes router.
make sure you have the correct password, and the router is setup correctly.
Reset the router and see if you can connect to it without security. make sure you turn security back on when the test is over.

  • Best connection for Windows Vista Desktop to Apple Network

I have a Windows Vista/Dell Desktop that I've hooked into my Wireless Network which is all Apple products. The Wireless card in the Dell is a D-link, but I have a constant problem with it dropping out when connected to my Apple TV. I'm wondering if I can hook an Airport Express directly into the Dell by an Ethernet cable, effectively using it as my Wireless Network "card" for the Dell. That would make all my Network components Apple products which I think would improve the reliability. Does my plan make sense??

Yes, this will work fine if you have a good wireless signal at the location for the Express. You would configure the Express to "join" the wireless network created by your Apple base station. Make sure that you put a check mark in the box next to "allow ethernet clients" on the setup for the Express.
If the wireless signal is not strong at the location of the Express / Dell, you might also consider the use of ethernet power line adapters. I've had very good luck with these devices and find that overall, they perform faster and more reliably than wireless.

  • My iPad mini touchscreen won't work and the screen is stuck on Choose A Wifi Network....Can Somebody Please Help Me

MY Ipad Mini Touchscreen Is Not Responding. It Won't Let Me Type In My Password When I Tried It Then Said That It Was Disabled For 1 Minute. Then I Tried It Again It Said Disabled For 5 Minutes. then I Tried To Reset It, I've Tried Recovery Mode NOTHING! Now The Screen Is Stuck On Choose a Wifi Network...Can Someone Help Me Please

If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • My iPad suddenly stopped connecting to my home network. It shows the network to. Choose from but there is no IP address or other information on the network page. It is set on DHCP and proxy is set at auto. Do I have another setting wrong?

My iPad suddenly stopped working with my home network.  It shows the network to choose from but will not connect. When I look at details in that network it does not show IP address or any other info for the network.  Setting is on DHCP and http proxy is set on auto. Network is active and can connect on wife's iPad and other home computers.  Do I have another setting wrong?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button
