Which new hardware should I buy

Hi I'm new to the forum and would like some help with my next purchase.
I was wondering which would give me better performace a P4 2.8 with HT or  Kinston hyper x 512 dual channel kit PC3700?
I would like to buy one of these due to the cost, so I just want to be sure of which one will give me best speed and performace.

I don't have dual channel on my board. I really like my system. All I was wanting was something to help open my applications a little quicker. As an Example My Printshop 20 takes about 15 seconds to open yet when my son ( CDM ) opens it on his which is an AMD it's there in 4 seconds. So that's why I am trying to get mine to have a quicker response time.

  • Which new iMac should I buy, the 21.5" iMac or 27" iMac?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could help! I'm about to purchase a brand new iMac (the ones which came out late October 2009) and for ages I was certain on getting the 27" because it looked so beautiful and I could double it up as a TV in my room! The only trouble is, now that I've actually had time to calm down from my iMac mania and actually think about just HOW big that screen is, I'm starting to worry... is it TOO big?
Bear in mind that my room is not very big, and my desk certainly isn't big (as you can see in the picture below) so I wouldn't be sitting far away from the screen to do my everyday tasks (such as emailing, surfing the internet, writing essays etc.) The only time I would be sitting far away from the screen is to watch films/ tv shows which I do pretty regularly but I'd say I surf the net more.
Do you think the new 27" iMac is going to be too big for my desk? I'm starting to think the 21.5" would be more suitable as I'm not a movie editor or publisher who needs a lot of windows open at once. I do like to play games, but not heavy ones, I mostly play The Sims so I think 21.5" is big enough for that?!
    Thanks very much!

You should go to an Apple Store if possible to see them in person.
Also, the 27-inch iMac has pretty high pixel density (small pixels), so the comfortable viewing distance may be about the same as with your current laptop. You have a much bigger screen, but things on the screen are not necessary going to look bigger. So you may not be sitting any further back. Of course, if you play a movie in full screen mode, it will be much bigger, and you'll have to back up.
The 21.5-inch iMac has slightly larger pixels. It may have the best combination of characteristics for your situation. And the screen is not as big, but is otherwise just as nice. But again, if you are near an Apple Store or other reseller, go take a look in person.

  • Which NI devices should I buy and how to start with?

    Greetings!
I am an undergraduate who is trying to design a control system which can measure chemical solution conductivity as well as PH value; besides, based on those values, we need to control 4 valves to open and close so that acid, base, water, and salt from 4 tanks can flow into the main pipe.
Question: Which NI device should I buy and start with? The devices have to have at least 4 input/output, do you have any suggestion, Thank you very much!!
I am also new to LabVIEW, so any extra suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you , we are considering purchasing NI USB-6008
    http://www.ni.com/products/usb-6008/
Doest it work with the following PH sensor, one specification says that it has output voltage of Output 0-5 vdc, does NI USB-6008 accept it?
    Model A1004 pH Transmitter
    Warning
Do not short the power connections. Wrong wiring of the signal and power wires will result in
permanent damage to the unit instantly.
    Specs:
    Range 0-14pH
    Power: 12vdc 500ma nominal
    Output 0-5 vdc
    Material ABS
    Calibration trim pots
    Distance up to 50ft
Model A1004 is a pH transmitter designed to be used with PLCs and microprocessors that accept
    analog input of 0-5vdc.
Connect any general purpose pH sensor to the transmitter. Double junction sensor is preferred.
Calibrate unit with 4 and 7 pH buffer solutions. Use zero trim pot to adjust 4pH and span trim pot to
adjust 7pH..Fine tune adjustment is done with span trim pot.
If you do not have a sensor , short the bnc connector ,this will simulate 7pH and observe output voltage
    of 2.5vdc.
Din connector provides power and signal from one cable.
Note.: When connecting signal and ground to the PLC input ,use .01uf capacitor across signal
and ground to filter any noise issues.

  • Which iPad Retina should I buy in the US so it will work in the UK?

I am going to the States next month and want to buy the new iPad there.  Which iPad Retina should I buy in the US so it will work in the UK, the AT&T or Verizon model? I'm probably staying with O2, but can't tell if different models are sold in the UK, or if its just the one.  If just the one, I can't find which model number it is for the UK. The apple store website isn't exactly clear on which model(s) is/are sold in the UK.

    Hi,
We don't have cellular, but I have often read many ques. and answers here just for my own info when we were first buying. I do know that in the past, Verizon had a different system than ATT and others. That could all have changed with LTE. I checked a couple of articles and found the following links which might help you. PLEASE NOTE these were published in March and May of 2012, so things might have changed with the new ipad 4. Also note that you can buy a cellular here without a contract that you could then set up with your own UK phone company.

You also said you wanted retina display and then said you were probably staying with 02. If by that you mean the ipad 2, I want to let you know that the ipad 2 does NOT have the retina display. That would mean you'd have to get the old discontinued 'new' ipad or the ipad 4. And if I were you, I would not even think of buying an old 'new ipad, even if there's a great sale on them. I'd go straight to the ipad 4.
Make sure you do as much research as possible.
    Hope this helps.

Which refurbished iPhone should I buy to work with my refurbished iPad 3 wifi?  Will I need a personal hotspot?

I'm having the same problem.  The iPad has never roamed particularly well between access points, but under IOS6 it doesn't seem to roam at all, it simply sticks with the access point it first connected with.
I don't have a solution for you, unfortunately.

  • Which macbook pro should I buy?? 13 or 15??

I am planning to buy a macbook pro but I don't know which macbook pro I should buy.
Games are not that important to me, however I play games such as call of duty, nba 2k, need for speed sometimes. Portability is important to me because it is compulsory for bringing laptops to school. I am confused on buying which macbook pro because the gpu of 13 is bad but 15 might be too big and heavy.
So which macbook pro should I buy?

    Hi Lawrence,
You've point out some of the important factors. For me, the choice would be easy. I'd gladly put up with a bit more bulk/weight to have a 15" display. ymmv

  • Which macbook pro should i buy if i use finalcut7?the i5 or i7?

which macbook pro should i buy if i use finalcut7?the i5 or i7?

Either one will do the job.  The more powerful the CPU, the faster it will perform.  I suggest that if the budget is tight, go for the i5, if not go for what the bank account will allow.
It is nice to have a fast CPU, but they are not essential to the overwhelming applications that most people use, especially in a non-vocational context.  On this forum there are the 'speed freaks' who will tout the virtues of faster CPUs, yet most have never compared two MBPs side by side and experienced the differences of real world results.
    Ciao.

  • Which Mac Mini should I buy for use with a 65 inch Panasonic GT30?

Im very interested in surfing the web from the comfort of my Lay Z boy.  I have a 65inch Panasonic GT30 tv along with an Onkyo TXNR609 av receiver that handles everything (DirecTV, PS3, X360, Wii, Apple TV).  My only concern is the lag issue in dealing with the big display.  Should I buy the base modle with the slower processor and upgrade the RAM?  Or should I buy the i7 and rock out that way?  I can afford either but would like to spend the least considering this isnt going to be the main computer in my house.  Thanks for any advice!!

If you ever (*ever*) want to fire up a serious 3D game (one with a 2010+ appetite for GPU power), go for the midrange model with the real videocard. If you only want to browse the web, maybe do some flash, things like that, the low end model has enough videocard for that. That Mini has the same Intel HD Graphics 3000 as my MBA13/2011 does, and that is currently driving my external 24" 1920x1200 screen just fine. Your TV is 1920x1080, so that even though it may have a lot more inches, it has fewer pixels than that, and it's the pixels that cost GPU power, not the inches. Size doesn't matter, its what you do with it!
Since you're comfortable upgrading the ram yourself, obviously put in 8 or 16 instead of the 2 or 4 it comes with. The pricing on that ram is insanely low right now and while I'd personally go for the 16 on a desktop machine, I reckon for your intended usage 8 is well more than sufficient (4 would probably work, it does on aforementioned MBA13 after all), and it's about $50ish difference which is not nothing.
If you can live with a small capacity drive, and are willing to open up the Mini further than just the base cover over the ram, I'd recommend getting a 128 GB SSD and installing it. The Apple price for the 256GB SSD, only on the midrange, is probably not worth it. You can even get a second-hard-drive-kit from one of the two well-known vendors and add the SSD while keeping the existing drive as an internal storage drive.
P.S.: I don't actually believe in CPU upgrades. Even when you start with the midrange, the i7 is still $100 and that will also buy you that SSD, or get you most of the way to that SSD plus the second hard drive kit. The difference in performance between the i5 at 2.5 and the i7 at 2.7 is really pretty darn minimal, so as long as you're choosing to do one thing and not the other, get the SSD before the CPU upgrade, no question. If you wanna go full-option balls-to-the-wall-everything-maxed, that's another thing, just don't go for the i7 upgrade as the first thing.
P.P.S.: Now that the 2012 MBAs and traditional MBPs are out, it seems likely that a Mac Mini refresh is coming relatively soon which contains an Ivy Bridge CPU and chipset (which means USB3 and HD4000), a more capable discrete GPU in the versions that have them, and (speculation tempered with hope) one of those new 35W TDP Quadcores in the midrange model, possibly as the CPU upgrade (pretty please, Apple?). It might be worth waiting for. On the other hand, waiting for new computer hardware is also a chump's game. There's *always* something better around the corner.

  • Which Colour Laser should I buy?

I have given up trying to get my Apple LaserWriter pro 630 to work with 10.6 so now I need to buy a new printer. Which reasonably priced colour laser printer should I buy?
I have a 27" iMac, a 24" imac, 17" Powerbook G5 and hopefully soon a second generation iPad which all need to print to the laser. The printer needs to take ethernet possibly wirelessly and USB would be a bonus. I don't have a very heavy usage but it must be capable of occasionally printing up to 200 copies.
On principle I wouldn't buy Dell after the 1997 comment!!
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Many thanks
    David

There is a good discussion on Macintouch today about color laser printers, and how the cost of consumables can greater than the cost of the printer itself. You should keep that in mind as you consider your options. The print quality is very good on most of them, USB and ethernet is pretty standard, with wireless a common option these days. But it is not necessarily the case that a color laser is less expensive to operate than an inkjet. I have both, and I think they have about the same costs. I save the laser for multiple copies, and prints that need to be water resistant, but the inkjet is my everyday printer. The laser is faster for multiple copies. That is its big advantage, but it is somewhat mitigated now that I am trying to eke out extra pages from the cartridges.

  • Architecture student, Which MacBook Pro should I buy?

I want to buy a macbook pro, i'm going to study architecture, but I don't know which model is the best one to run AutoCad and other architecture programs.
    I think I need a i7 chip, but I don't know if the 13-inch MBP i7 dual-core 8gb Ram or 15-inch MBP i7 Quad-core 4Gb Ram, what do you think?

Well I got the MBP 13" 2.9 GHz. I weighed all the options the price differences and pros and cons. I'm am very happy with my dission.
The Retina was way out of price range for what you get. The ability to no upgrade unit was a huge turnoff. And to buy it fully loaded was not even worth it. I don't have that kinda dough to throw around, and I think it highly over rated. It's new and has a wow factor, but does not make sense. Millions of great photos connived and edited before retina display, so to say its needed or worth it at that price is not logical for me.
The 15" was a close to me, but $700 difference out of pocket still was not sure for me after selling my old MPB. portability was issue, and if my old 13" MBP did my editing ok in PS CS5 and Lightroom 4 then the new 13" should be no problem.
    What I got:
I got MBP 13" 2.9MHz i7. I figured it have a better resale value in long run over the 2.3MHz i5.
the size is perfect as I travel all the time. I'm a pilot full time so it fits in my camera bag perfect.
I added my already owned 256GB SSD drive in it, and upgraded to 16GB RAM for $110. It's amazing fast. 4 sec open PS CS6.
I have been using it to edit my photos in LTR4 and PS CS6, no problem and fast. In the 14 days owned I have not even opened the cover of my laptop, it's always been used on external 27" display. So money saved I upgraded my gear New CF Cards, USB 3.0 HUB, USB 3.0 Card Reader, USB 3.0 External Hadrive.  Still money saved, cause I sold all my old USB and Drives and Cardsbon EBay too.  The USB 3.0 was main reason I upgraded, it's worth it to. 3.0 makes a differencebandni can see the transfer speed differences. So much faster.
So theres my reasons for doing what I did.

  • Which windows program should I buy?

I have just purchased a new I mac, intel, with a copy of parallels. I now need to purchase Windows and prefer XP. Should I buy the home edition or the professional?
    Thanks

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
the main difference between XP Home and XP Pro is, that XP Pro integrates better in LAN environment and features Group Policies too.
With Parallels and an iMac XP Home is sufficient.
Also, buying an OEM (or System Builder) version of XP Home can save you some money.
But stay away from 'bundled' OEM version from PC manufacturer, that originally were sold/delivered with a PC, since these versions mostly only work on that particular PC.
    Have Fun

  • Which Latitude Computer Should I Buy?

I am heading to college and I've decided to get a Latitude Dell computer to last me my undergraduate. However, I am undecided about which Latitude I should buy. I want the one that is going to run best with creative suite production premium cs6 but if the power difference in the computers makes no real difference on which computer I'm choosing I would buy the cheaper one and buy an external hard drive. I have difficulties understanding computer specs so its hard for me to understand how different the computers are from each other though it seems the biggest difference between the computers are the hard drives and the screen size (14'' vs 15.6''). I'll list the two specs bellow.
    Intel 2.9 GHz i7 Processor;
    64 Bit;
    500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive;
    8 GB RAM; 14.0 " HD Anti-Glare LED Display (1366x768);
Intel HD Graphics 4000 Video Card
Enabled; 6-Cell (65WH) Primary Lithium Ion Battery
    or
    i7-3720QM Processor (2.6GHz Quad-Core)
    Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit
    15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Wide View Anti-Glare WLED-backlit display
NVIDIA NVS 5200M Discrete 1GB Graphics card
    8 GB RAM
    750GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
    9-cell battery, 90-watt A/C adapter
I am also curious to hear your opinion on Latitude computers and if you think I will have any problems with production premium or the computer in general.

If you are not doing video or 3D modeling/CGI work, you maybe able to get by with either base model, 27 inch iMacs.
If you can afford it get the 27 inch iMac with the faster i5 CPU. The GPU is not that big an issue with 2D or flat images.
So, I think you would, also, be fine with the base 27 inch screen model with only 1 GB of VRAM.
WIth photography, it's all about CPU, RAM and storage size/space.
Purchase this 27 inch screen iMac with the base RAM and purchase additonal, cheaper RAM through third party RAM vendors.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
The 27 inch screen iMacs can take a total of 32 GBs of RAM.
After purchase, I would advise installing, at least, another 8 GBs of RAM for, at least a total of 16 GBs of RAM. Install more RAM if you can afford it.
As far as storage is concerned, forget the base 1 TB standard hard drive and consider installing, at purchase time,  the 3 TB Fusion drive, instead.
OR (again,if you can afford it) consider the 512 GB Solid State Flash Drive and use external drives for image storage when the storage on the Flash drive becomes full.
WIth the Mac Pro, you are forced to use external storage (extra costs) as well as forced to having to purchase a good, color accurate external monitor with image editing and color correction work (another additional and expensive purchase).
The iMac is a completely all-in-one purchase solution versus a individual component system like a Mac Pro system.

  • Which iMac 24" should I buy ?

I need to switch to an Intel Mac to use a dictate software. I had a look at the market and I would need some advice. There are some deals on Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme iMacs, which are still a little more than the regular 2 Duo with same clock speed. What does "Extreme" stand for and is it worth the extra cost? Another question is: will it be possible to install Tiger on any of those iMacs sold with 10.5 (for compatibillity with older programs)?
    Thanking you in advance!

The only difference in the "Extreme" processor is that it has an un-capped multiplier which is meaningless to a Mac user. The newer 2.8GHz is a newer .45nm processor as opposed to the older .65nm processors. It also has 6MB cache as opposed to 4MB and overall is supposed to be more power efficient. Both are very close in performance but the newer one should be slightly faster so for the cost difference I would go for the newer model. However if you specifically need to run 10.4 on it you would have to get the older 2007 model as Tiger does not include some of the drivers for the newest 2008 iMac. The 2007 ALU iMacs originally came with Tiger pre-installed so all you need to do is locate an original 10.4 ALU iMac install disk for it.
