Which of these iMacs would be best for running After Effects?

Hello, pretty simple question, which of these 2 iMac configurations would be best suited for using After Effects and other video editing software like Premiere or Final Cut Pro X?
Option 1 - 21.5 inch
3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X8GB
1TB Fusion Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1GB GDDR5
Option 2 - 27 inch
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5
For some reason Apple don't offer more than 1GB of dedicated video ram in anything but the maxed out 27inch. Personally, I’m not fussed about the bigger screen and I would say that having the faster processor, double the ram and a fusion drive would be more beneficial than the extra gig in the video card but I’m not 100% sure, what do you guys think? Thanks.

You need 16GB of ram for AE. Whether you get the 27 or 21 you still need that much ram. AE only uses the Ray Tracer for specific processes that are often not used. I would not worry so much about the GPU with this. Take the higher CPU and atleast 16GB of ram though 32GB is ideal.

  • Which imac would work best for Graphic Design?

I am a Graphic Designer, currently using Creative Suite 2 (soon to be upgraded to CS3) and I need a new Mac for home. A Powermac takes up too much space, so I'm thinking about an imac with a 24" monitor and I have a few questions for the experts:)
Which imac would work best for graphics?
Is the monitor acurate for Pantone color matching?
Is the 24"monitor on the imac clear and bright?
    Is Leopard a stable OS?
I also need an (inexpensive) color laser printer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks a bunch!
Suzi (Machead since the beginning of Mac history)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The 24" iMac uses a superior LCD panel to the 20" model and so is certainly better suited to your purposes. I don't know how badly having a piece of glass in front of the display would affect you as a designer though.
The display certainly is clear and bright. I use it on it's lowest brightness setting.
Leopard is stable but it's worth checking that drivers for any devices that you currently rely on are available. For example I have to go back to my 10.4.11 iMac G4 to use my scanner. Personally I can't get iCal to alarm in Leopard but that's a fairly minor gripe.
As this is the forum for much older iMacs I'd suggest re-posting in the Intel iMac forum and even Mac OS 10.5 Printing forums for better informed opinion:

  • Which of these macs would you choose for video editing?

The main difference is the MBP has an Serial ATA drive, and the Air has a Flash drive.  Also the MPB has 2.9Ghz, and the Air has only 2.0Ghz.  Which one would you pick for editing with Final Cut Pro X? (Also curious which one you would pick even if video editing wasn't a concern for you, thanks!)

Thanks for the answer.  Didn't realize the 13" MBPs differed from the 15" MBPs.  I thought the screen was the only major difference.
Apple fools a lot of people with that. The 13" is really a MacBook and not a "Pro" machine.
The best machine for video editing depends upon what your going to do, full on production or casual home stuff.
A 15" MacBook Pro and a iMac for the casual lightweight stuff and iMove can do the job.
The new MacPro coming out for the heavy duty stuff.
The industry seems to be moving away from Final Cut Pro X as it's been consumerized or something, lacking needed features and moving towards Avid on powerful Mac's or Windows 7 towers.

So perhaps a mix of Avid and Final Cut Pro X if your serious about furthering your career.

  • Need a laptop for running After Effects and other video editors

Alright, I'm looking for a laptop that can run Adobe After Effects, Premiere, and Photoshop smoothly(Mainly After Effects). My current laptop  a $400 HP Compaq is capable of running those programs but not without constant freezing and slowness, specifically in After Effects and Premiere. Ideally it could run Adobe After Effects and Premiere simultaneously without being slow.
My maximum budget is $1200. I've browsed a good deal myself, but I haven't seen much that has caught my eye. I'm looking for a Windows laptop that also has a monitor that is at least 16". All of these programs are CS5. I'm here because I want to get the most out of my budget as I can, and hopefully people more experienced in Adobe products can help me out.
Ask any questions you have incase I left anything out.
    Thanks for your time,

-at least the Intel sandy bridge 2720 or 2820 quad processor
-and nvidia graphics preferably the 460m, 485m is a bit much
-1280x900 display with OpenGL 2.0-compatible graphics card
-and 8 or 16 gig ram and Win7 64bit Pro
-and 2 internal 7200 HDDs minimum

  • Which Imac would be better for gaming?

So i've got a choice between these two models -
    £1329.60
3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    8gb Ram
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1GB GDDR5
    Apple care
    27 inch model
    3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB (two 4GB) memory
    1TB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M with 1GB video memory
    Apple care
    £1407.60
Basically, the decision is down to, do I want a slightly better graphics card and bigger screen, or a smaller screen and better processer?
I just want to gauge opinions, i'll be using it as my day to day computer as well, some video editing, but nothing too strenuous. How big is the difference in graphic and processing powers.
    Thanks for your help

With all due respect the question was "which iMac would be better for gaming?".  Key word here is 'better', not 'perfect', not 'ideal'; just 'better'. Unqualified answers and/or sweeping statements do very little to contribute to a discussion, let alone answer the question under consideration.

  • I have a new (mid) 2011 imac and want to transfer my old records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for a new mac that would have compatible software for ripping to itunes?

i have a mid 2011 i5 imac and i want to transfer my vinyl records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for my imac that has compatible software for transfer to itunes

    Hallo,
I use an Akai usb turntable with the Audacity sw delivered with it. To monitor during recording I also use the LineIn utility (all this on a Macbook Pro with Mavericks).
It works fine, only the input volume of the usb audio port cannot be adjusted (at least I did not yet discover how to do it) and the volume of the music is lower than other music imported into iTunes from CD or iTunes store, but still acceptable.
    Success, Jean

  • Which 15" MacBook Pro will be best for my planned use?

I am heading back to school and am required to get a MacBook Pro for class (I am a Design, Art & Technology - AKA Multimedia - major).  The suggested specs from the school are as follows:
    15-inch MacBook Pro
    2.7GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB GDDR5 memory
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
I am in the process of researching if this is the best computer for my needs.  I am upgrading from my current laptop - a 2.53 GHz 15" MacBook Pro from '09 with 4GB of RAM and 7200 RPM 750 GB HDD (upgraded from a 5200 RPM 250 GB HDD) running 10.6.8 - which has been holding up great for four years.  At this point though I need a second computer that has a quadcore processor.
    My normal/expected usage:
I will likely be working on projects in web design, some light game design, app design, interactive installation, etc. for class.  I anticipate working on video editing software and Photoshop as well.  I regularly use Ableton Live with an external audio interface, MIDI devices and third party plugins for music production (20 to 40+ track mixing & mastering) and may start to use it for live or interactive projects.  I run an external monitor as a second screen when at home and do a good amount of multitasking work with the second display where quickness switching between applications is key.
I stopped by the local Apple store today and had a conversation with one of the sales reps exploring the possibilities of deviating from my school's suggested bundle above.  We talked about the benefits of SSD's on performance but the drawbacks on storage size to $$ ratio (I need at least 500GB of storage space, preferably 700GB).  The rep suggested multiple times that the Retina display model would be best for me because it is a more durable computer and makes more sense than dropping the 2.7 GHz processor to a 2.6 GHz on the above recommendation and using the money to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD (since it would be a similar computer but without the hi-res screen).  But the Retina models were in stock, while the custom non-retina model I was considering building online was not, so I do not know if the rep was just doing his job as a salesperson and trying to move what the store had in stock...
What I am hoping to get opinions on is: Given my planned usage, will the school's suggestion be sufficient/will my downgrade of proccessing power to fund an SSD be insufficient/does it make sense to really stretch my budget and get the Retina 15" 2.7 GHz with 8GB RAM and 512/768 GB SSD?  Even with the educational pricing and my usage, I don't know if the upgrade to the Retina 15" is justified - but I am not very experienced in comparing computers.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  Thanks!

I say DITTO to what Clinton just told you, AND what woodmeister said.
As to use of the External HD  use same for all large media files, PDF , pics, movies etc.
Keep your internal SSD for programs and primary (use it every day) working files of small size.
Yes, I would replace the SSD as upgrade and RAM myself.
Ram takes 30 seconds to do, anyone can do that nearly with eyes closed.  EASY
SSD, youd need to use carbon copy cloner or likewise, clone your internal HD to the SSD, check with a boot to make sure all ok........then install the SSD, very easy, like Clinton said, .....done it many times.
    You asked:
Are you able to reference info on them without moving the data to the internal SSD?
Yes, you can alter, open close etc files off the external HD same as you can the internal SSD, however access speed will be slower, but plenty fast enough for anything you want to do, watch movies off same, work on/ alter/ create files on internal and then backup to external
You need an external HD at any rate for Time Machine backup, and backup in general. NEVER trust any internal HD, or a single copy of anything.
In fact you should always have at least 2 backups for data, in which case a 2nd external HD is highly recommended.

  • Which version of Oracle database is best for Windows 7 Home Premium?

Any input as to which version of Oracle database is best for Windows Home premium? Is there a major difference between the express edition and 10g itself as far as the interface/learning purposes goes?

    EssbaseApprentice wrote:
Any input as to which version of Oracle database is best for Windows Home premium? That's easy to answer, none . No oracle database version was released for Home(Premimum) series. There are several blog posts/articles which do mention that they have installed oracle releases over Home(Premium) platforms but whether it would work or not, it would be just a lottery and help regarding troubleshooting would not be there.
Is there a major difference between the express edition and 10g itself as far as the interface/learning purposes goes? You mean 10g Express Edition and 10g Enterprise, Standard Editions? If yes, then there is indeed difference. The Express edition is more like a developer's playground with a good looking GUI even there to administer it. EE or SE are the production releases , meant for being used in a very busy, highly concurrent environments. There would be additional features like RAC and Dataguard that would come with EE and wont be there in the XE. So if you are learning to become a production DBA, you should right away use EE or SE IMO .

As John suggested you should properly post this question in an Visual Studio forum:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=visualstudiogeneral&filter=alltypes&sort=lastpostdesc
Visual C++, C#, VB.Net are all running on the DOT.NET enviroment and are different languages that have no difference in functionality.
C and C++ does not run on the DOT.NET platform, but directly on the CPU.
C# does also deals with processes and threads, and you can load DLL's at runtime/compile time if you want.
    C# also have console applications.

Keep in mind that all iPhone 5s currently available in the US are built for the US customer.  It is avaialable unlocked by US law.  This law does not extend beyond US borders.  If the iPhone becomes locked at some future date (this has happened), there will be no recourse.
My suggestion is to wait until Apple releases the factory unlocked iPhone 5s for the international market.
