Which one? Crystal Reports or BO

Hello friends,
I've a basic question. I'm new in this area.
I've BI implemented in my company and till date we had been using BeX for Reporting purpose.
Now, I would like to know which tool would be the right one for Reporting purposes.
Crystal Reports OR BO?
What is the difference between the two?
IS Crystal Reports stand alone Tool provided by SAP? What is the relationship between BI, CR and BO?

Hi
what are exactly your requirements for reporting?
Crystal Reports is a very powerful reporting tool which allows to build pixel-accurate, highly formatted reports  but with rather limited user interaction capabilities (standard reporting). The designer tool is indeed a stand-alone tool but the reports can be viewed over a web browser. The integration with SAP BW allows to invoke reports even from within SAP GUI or SAP Portal (EP or KMC)  and facilitates personalized report bursting.
BusinessObjects Web Intelligence is an intuitive ad-hoc reporting tool with advanced graphical capabilities and allows the user to view/build reports on the web browser. The reports can also be invoked from an SAP Enterprise or KM Portal.
In both cases you require a BusinessObjects Enterprise (or Edge) server installation.
I would suggest to take a look here:

  • How to get one crystal report to work with two different backends?

We have a software that can work with either SQL2008 or Visual Fox Pro backend.  We are trying to compile One Crystal report that will work with either of the two backends.  How to you make sure that your Crystal Report is compiled so that it will work with both backends?
Right now my reports were originally created using the SQL2008 backend and are retaining the DBO reference in the statement, which then will not allow the Crystal report to work with the VFP backend.

You can write your data sets as a command using hand coded SQL. As long as "dbo" is the only schema used in your SQL Server database, you don't need to specify it in the SQL. SQL Server will automatically assume the dbo.
The 2nd thing... The SQL needs to be 100% compatible with both SQL Server 2008 AND VFP.  This will limit the list available functions to those that are common to both platforms AND work exactly the same in both platforms.
The other part is to make sure you are using an ODBC type connection instead of OLD/DB. That way all of the connection properties are set on the local machine and the report is simply looking for the System DSN name.

  • How do i access multiple bex queries in one crystal reports??

    Hello Experts,
I have 10 cubes and 30 bex queries on it and i need to create 3 final crystal reports on these 30 queries.
I am on BI 4.0 & CR 2011. but my client is not on correct SAP patch ie., he is on 15+ but he must be on 23+ to access multiple bex queries on CR 2011 Database expert. (I am unable to see bex queries in Database expert to link couple of bex queries)
And my client env doesnt have SAP EP for SAP BW Netweaver Connection to create a connection to access cubes or queries in IDT.
Do my client env need EP? so that SAP BICS Connection will work in IDT?
How do i approach to achive this...
    Thank you...

    Hi,
have you checked the option "allow external access" in your query? SAP Toolbar will find all queries but the database export needs this flag to be set.
Using multiple queries within one crystal report is using the "multi database join feature" of crystal reports. You can link your queries by key fields and crystal will join them in memory. So when there are many queries or many datarows this can be a huge performance killer.
Actuallly one of our customers is running a report which has more than 20 BEx queries linked together. It runs just fine.
Please be sure to set your joins correctly. E.g. crystal will try to make a join on the "key figures" sturcture if you let it create a suggestion or it will try to link on all fields of an infoobject. This will bring MDX errors.
So you should be setting your joins correctly - the [infoobject]-[20infoobject] fields are fine for that.
I hope you can use some of my words.

  • One Crystal Report portable to different databases (same database design)

    Good day,
I apologize first off, as I am NOT a programmer, just a user.
    In summary:
Crystal Report for data from Sql database.
Currently using ODBC connection and linking to database.
However, we have multiple databases, all with the same table structure etc, just different data.
Right now we change the datasource for each database.
The crystal report is run from an in house program
Is there a way we can have the report set so that it will pull the datasource at runtime, and not be hard coded into the crystal report.
Our goal is to take the one report and have our users of each database be able to access their own data without creating multiple copies of the report with each dataset.
    Thanks,
    RY

    Hi Ryan,
As per my understanding you have multiple databases with the same database schema however with the different data. You would like to create reports where the user should be able to select which database to use and this should not be hard coded.
In this case you can use the Business View wherein you have the feature of Dynamic data connection which basically is a pointer to different Data Connections
A Dynamic Data Connection is a collection of pointers to various Data Connections. An administrator or user is able to select which Data Connection to use through a parameter.
When users refresh reports that are based on a Dynamic Data Connection, they are prompted to specify which of the available Data Connections to use.
Note that each of the data sources that a Dynamic Data Connection points to must have similar schemas
When a Business View designer creates a Data Foundation that is based on a Dynamic Data Connection, this user is prompted to specify which Data Connection to use. Similarly, when a user refreshes a report based on a Dynamic Data Connection, that user is prompted to specify which Data Connection to use. In the usage scenario, you would create one Dynamic Data Connection composed of the three ORACLE sales databases: Sales Development, Sales Testing, and Sales Production. A typical name for such a Dynamic Data Connection would be Dynamic Sales.
I hope this information helps you and let me know if this works for you.

  • 2 BI Reports in one Crystal Report

    Hi Guys
Can i have a crystal report that shows result of 2 BI Queries.. side by side or maybe one on top and other at bottom. can the users refresh both reports at the same time ?
If Crystal reports cant do this what about WEBI ?
    thanks

You can take advantage of 'sub report' functions in CR. Return one of the query in main report and another one in subreport or you can create two sub reports under one main report.
In WebI, you can create many reports with different queries when you design the report, just right click the first report at the bottom of the design panel, each report displayed as a tab.
    Thx, Hao

  • Multiple BW Reports in one crystal report

    Hi All,
I'm very new to crystal reports. My next project is on Crystal reports.
I have a bw web report with 6 repots included in the web report.
Is it possible to inlcude 6 reports in a crystal report........i had seen the subreport option in crystal reports but here the reports are placed next to other instead of one below the other..........
    if possible  please suggest steps.........
    regards,
    Raj

    Raj,
The easy way... Open a new report and place the 5 reports next to each other in the design window as sub-reports.

  • Can one Crystal Report could contian Current Month, YTD and ITD data?

    Hi,
I am trying to build a crystal report and be able to show data in summarized format on single report containing data for the current month, year to date and Inception to date.
The difficulty that I find is the date ranges. Current month date range is different from YTD and ITD date.
what would be the best way to show such data on crystal report? is there a sample report available that can help me to produce such report?
your help will be highly appreciated, thanks!
    regards,
    Mansoor

    Hey Joe,
if you have CRXI, take a look at the sample reports
Record Selection on Date Range has some good examples
you can do this with multiple Groups
    create a formula
    in to currentdate
( this group will cover your inception date to currentdate)
second group will be a date group also, select year as your print by option for this group.
    3rd group also by date,
    select month.
add fields to your details section, select the field, right click and select summary location,
    (add to all groups)
you can then supress footers and headers as needed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Performance issue with two Infosets in one crystal report

I am using two infosets that are not linked together by any primary key. The main infoset had transaction records and the seconds infoset has only one record (which is a foreign exchange rate). The performance is slow and I am presuming its because there are no linked fiields between the infosets, everytime a record is read from the main infoset it goes to the second infoset and also reads the record there. Is there a way toimprove performance? How can I have the report read the second infoset only once and stiore that value to be used when reading trecords from the first infoset.

  • Sql query problem which causes crystal reports in visual studio to freeze

Anyone know why this query posted here freezes up? if i remove  s.enddate IS NULL from the query is when it freezes up. This is used on an infinite campus database for which i only have read only access so no posting anything that requires write access please!
IT may just be a flaw in my query which it has been before but it only stops responding if i remove the above query and it only started this after i added the comments subreport if i remove it then the action above doesn't cause it to freeze in visual studio.
I do have a subreport for comments that is in the report too. Heres the main query:

  • One page turn out to be 4 pages in crystal report viewer, Bug?

we are using crystalReports xi release 2, visual studio 2005,IIS in windows 2003 and asp.net. We have one crystal report viewer in web page to dispaly one report, It has been running properly for several months in production server. Now we run into big issues. In report Views, one page report always turn into  4 small size pages. When we test it in visual studio 2005, it still works correctly without any problem. Even we unstalled IIS and reinstalled IIS, deployed web again, the problem is still there. It is very strange and frustrating to developer! Now we are afraid of handling crystal report, which seem arise many potential unexpected issue down the road. any clue?
the following is source got from IE browser, height for Viewer1 is only 367px,
normal value is 1039px,That is reason why page seems significantly shorter. How can we control the height? Even specifing size in css, it just be ignored.
    LINK rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"  aspnet_client/System_Web/2_0_50727/CrystalReportWebFormViewer3/css/default.css"><table id="CrystalReportViewer1" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="display:inline-block;border-style:Solid;height:367px;width:149px;">
           style="width: 149px; height: 367px;position:relative"
    Thanks in advanced.
    Jim

    Hi Rizwan,
You can't with the report itself because once the refresh is complete it requires a full refresh to update any page. And there is no option to for example refresh just the subreport.
RAS SDK has samples on how to add subreports, see the OverView tab for a link to the samples, but it still requires a refresh to be called.
One way may be to use Subreports on Demand, URL's to another report.... Each subreport would run individually without refreshing the main report. It would like a Table Of Contents report though.
So to be clear, adding pages is the same thing as adding more data. Problem is most of the data needs to be complete so that summaries and running totals etc. type of objects require the data to be complete to be able to render each page.
So why do you need to do this? Can you explain your workflow?

  • Error Connecting SAP Business One and Crystal Report

    Hi All,
I installed Crystal Report 2008 on my system for creating a report in Crystals.
I clicked on "New Report" and it opened a window called "Database Exert." However, when I look in the Database Expert, I cannot see "SAP Business One" in it. How can I connect SAP Business One 8.8 with Crystal Report?
    Regards,
    Bharath S

    Hi
On your computer, locate the Crystal folder according to the following directory path: C:\Program Files\SAP\SAP Business One\Crystal. Then double-click the file: SAP Business One Crystal Report Integration Package.exe. and follow the step of the setup status screen.

  • Using more than one Query in Crystal Reports

    Dear all,
we want to use two queries an combine them in one crystal report.
    How does this work?

    Sorry my mistake.
It IS possible to join results from 2 different BW queries.
What CR does not support is the join between BW data and relational data.
Still the best practice is to do the join in the database (eg. using an InfoSet)
How many rows do you expect to get from each query?

I'm using Eclipse All in one, which includes Crystal Reports.. I Connected my Java program with Crystal Reports and its working properly. Now my problem is that the Report is not working in JAR files.. It throws some exception as

now you have any idea.. pleaseIs that a typo where you have two periods below?
queryengine..driverImplOther than that I don't think anybody here can help you with that. If your classpath includes all necessary JAR files and you are able to access all your resources from within your application JAR file, then I imagine there is a problem with the third-party crystal decisions JAR file or how you are attempting to use it.
My advice to you is to try and contact support with the vendor or provider of this API or possibly try posting on a support forum on their website to see if somebody can help you there.

  • Crystal Reports with VS2005 - Load Report failed Error....

    Post Author: rajeshvijayan
    CA Forum: Older Products
    Hi,
I am running Crystal Reports viewer on IIS6.0 and windows server 2003, which was installed using the redistributable package that comes along with Visual Studio 2005. We open these reports through a web based application 1 which is run on a different application pool on IIS. We have about 3 to 4 other web applications runing on the same IIS. All the other Web applications are working fine.
This  web application 1 has 2 parts - one is the normal data display quiries from the back end SQL server 2005 and the other is the Crystal Reports which also quires data from SQL Server 2005. At times i find that these reports all of them throw an error - Load Report Failed. At the same time the Part 1 of this application does work fine in showing the data that is queried from the database. Moreover at this stage, I dont find any errors in the Event viewer. If i restart this application pool alone, the reports starts working fine again.
I had gone through a few of the news groups and have made all the necessary permission related changes like the TEMP Folder, ASP.NET temporary folder, the folder in which the crystal reports is placed etc but still the same error throws up after some point in time. Wanted to know if there is any special configuration required on the Application pool when it comes to Crystal Reports. We have bout 10 to 15 users using this application for testing and it only throws this error at times and not always.
Looking forward to any kind of solution from your side.
    Regards

Yes I too have been fighting this problem. I was using a XML Data file and schema file for my u201Cdatabase templateu201D in the report. I would then run my query using the .NET SQLClient then fill the report with my dataset table using the SetDataSource method from the ReportDocument object.
I tried both embedded and runtime loaded reports all worked fine on my development machine but would NOT work on my production server. I use all the server installs, played with user rights, registering DLLu2019s still nothing.  I went as far as creating a winform app to fix the problem. I then had exactly the same problem, I was catching the error and it originated from the viewer control in both winform and webforms.
What finally worked for me was to attach to the database using OLE DB instead of XML/schema (xml/xsd) datasource then pasting my SQL Query into the database connection command this gave me the fields to build the report. I actually used the u201CSet Database Locationu201D Dialog in Crystal Reports so I didnu2019t have to redesign my report. This dialog works very weird but I managed to figure it out. I then used an embedded report and all seem to be well. I think there is a problem with the Crystal Reports .NET Server Install and Merge Modules used with .NET with XML files, but I cannot be sure, all I know is this worked for me.
I am concerned that if my database server is moved or renamed my report might break because the server connection is embedded in the report, but for right now it is working. I thought that was the reason for using the xsd file was to eliminate the dependence on a server connection in the report.
Good luck and I hope this helps you fix your problem too. If it does please let me know I have see so many reports of people asking questions about this problem and it seems like most are left hanging.

  • Crystal Report Lines Problem

    Experts,
In one crystal report, there are more than 20 pages. Now in first page data coming fine, but in most of the pages, the lines (column lines, vertical lines) are not ending or not touching the horizontal line which really looks very odd. Please help

    Hi,
There are a couple of options when formatting the lines that you can try.
For the horizontal lines in the format dialog check the 'Move to bottom of section when printing' option.
For the vertical lines, make sure they extend into the section with the horizontal line and in the format dialog check the 'Extend to bottom of section when printing' option.
This generally tidies things up but the real trick is in getting the lines in the correct sections.  I try and avoid lines where possible since the lining up always takes time but it is often useful to have a section below the main printing section which is only for the horizontal line.
    Hope this helps
    Rob
