Which one of these Macbooks (configurations) will be faster?

I'm debating between a 13'' macbook air and a macbook pro.
The MacBook pro is a 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz and 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM BUT with a 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
The MacBook Air is 1.8GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i5 with 4GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM BUT has a solid state drive
I heard a solid state drive makes a huge difference in speed but I don't know how much. if they will match in performance I will go for air's portability but if the pro far outweighs in speed I might go with it.
for cost issues I am maxing out at those 2 options. is there a clear winner for which is the faster (stronger) computer?

The SSD may be faster than the HDD, but the MBP should be about 4 times faster than the MBA.
Please don't make multiple posts of the same question.

  • Which one of these options are better for CDS updation?

    Hi,
I was going through the data flow in the outbound direction in NW mobile.
the data object instances in the CDS are updated by 3 means:
    1)  DOE triggered
    2) backend triggered
    3) backend pushes instance to DOE.
which one of these is better.
kindly explain the reason as well.

    Hi,
Actually there are only two types of Synchronization types between Backend & DOE,
    1. DOE Triggered
    2. Backend Triggered
DOE triggered adapters will pull the data from Backend to DOE where as Backend triggered adapters will push the data from Backend to DOE (there are two types in BE triggered, Key push & Instance push).
Backend triggered sync type is always better since the changes have been pushed to the DOE then & there (this can be achieved by event,etc..). So that always DOE & Backend will be consistent & the receivers (devices) will also get the latest data in order to proceed with their day to day activities (i.e. business critical data).

  • Which one of these 12volt/car charger for MacBook Pro would you choose..???

    Hi everyone.
I am looking for a suitable 12volt/car charger, so i can charge my brand new MacBook Pro directly from our caravan batteries via a car/12 volt socket. I dont want to use a inverter, as it draws unnecessary power from the vans batteries.
I am being cautious as I don't want to use a product that is not 100% compatible here in Australia and might void the warranty in any way.
I can not find anything suitable manufactured by Apple but I have found many 3rd party alternatives, ranging from approx $50 up to a couple of hundred.
Has anyone had any experience with any of these products.

Thanks for your help in advance

Hi Carl, Thank you for your help. I am still none the wiser which one to pick. You say they are not equivalent, but don't they all do the same job. I never was any good at joining the dots, my spelling is shocking and I really wouldn't know a technical error even if it was starring me in the face.
    Have a good one.

  • Which one of these two drives would you recommend and why

    Hello,
I am planning on adding an external HD to be used with Time Machine.
I was looking at a WD My Book Studio LX 2 TB FireWire 800, then I saw another WD - 2 TB My Book Studio II.
While the first look very nice and sleek with its aluminum case, and judging by WD website, offers more features, the second one seem to be faster (7200 rpm vs 5400 rpm) and it also offers 5 years of warranty compared with only 3.
I am not a computer geek, therefore I am throwing the question here: which one should I buy and why? Do I really need that RAID technology?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
    Regards,
    Loerincz

IMHO, you want neither. I've heard enough bad things about WD drives on these forums that I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole. Try [Other World Computing|http://www.macsales.com>. They've got quality stuff.
As for RAID, you probably don't need that. RAID is a way to make multiple separate drives act like one larger drive, but that's major overkill for most home backup needs.

  • I am about to buy my first ipad but dont know which one to buy.  I will use it for email, browsing, watching films etc -Please help me!

I am about to buy my first ipad but don't know which one to choose and all the information baffles me!!  I will use it for email, browsing, watching films, general things like that.  Please help?

I'm sure others will disagree, but I'm all about saving $.  I would start by looking online at the Apple store for refurbished devices.  I would also get MORE memory than yout think you will ever need.  The    stuff we have seems always to expand to fill the space available.  I wouldn't get one with cellular capability unless you really, really need it...

  • Which one to buy Macbook Air 13' 4gb or Macbook Pro 8gb for Computer Science Course

I'm starting university in July and I'm considering purchasing a rMacBook Pro 13" or a MacBook Air 13" to use during my study. I just can't decide which to go for.
The problem with Macbook air is that it is available in only 4gb RAM in India(no option for 8GB yet ) so for 8gb of RAM i have no other option but to go for the much expensive rMBP which costs arnd 600$ more than the MBA here after the student discount.
I will be mostly be using it for coursework, development purpose and movies, not into gaming that much. Wont be using it for photo-editing or video editing purpose, so the doubt that 4gb of RAM would be enough for the next 3+ years. Maximum usage would be running a linux or Win VM and IDE running in it along with maybe an IDE running on the OSX too. Thats the max usage i could think of.
MBA costs arnd 1060$ and rMBP 1685$. So is the rMBP 8gb worth it for my usage as it is expensive or the MBA would be sufficient enough to last me arnd 3 years according to my usage.

Should the recent or (whenever next) future models have the same limits and inaccessible upgrade design, while highly engineered and nice to look at, as the late 2013; that will turn some to look into finding new-old-stock older models that have removable battery (not glued in) and replaceable or upgradeable RAM where they didn't solder in the chips.
    http://www.macrumors.com/2013/10/25/teardowns-of-late-2013-retina-macbook-pros-r eveal-no-improvements-in-accessibility/
You may have to consider an earlier model if you can locate one, that has access to upgrade RAM chips as you see a need develop for greater capacity for specific use; and one that does not have a glued in battery. The ability to upgrade the hard disk drive or have an SSD replaced without major issue or high costs, is another factor to an end-user and one who may not be able to afford to buy anything this costly every year as needs or situations change, or as issues develop in use and demands on the unit present shortcomings for some users.
Subtle hardware change can occur in an existing model line, but we'd have no way of knowing it here, and main media or news releases would be the main source of information; short of knowing someone at a retail store or the online store when you may get a rare opportunity to pre-order a new computer, after news of its pending arrival has hit the streets. By then, the specs are already set in metal, plastic, and retail price.
If there were a source for restored or renewed products of a few years ago, at good discount, with some kind of warranty or guaranty that had a local service on the ground there, I'd suspect that'd be a consideration. In the US, there are several companies who repair and sell repaired computers, in their web site, and get some from lease returns that they can refurbish; these are independent companies such as powermax, wegenermedia, and others who advertise in a limited circle of market.
I wonder if there are any options to order from another country or region Apple Store online where they may offer more inventory; but have no insight or answers to that kind of thinking. We're user-to-user volunteers and sometimes the information is missing to any of us here, that a retail product expert would know.
Wish I could be of more help, but I don't see how at this point.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Which one of these phones has the best battery lif...

I am going to get a Nokia phone from "O2" store tomorrow. I will either get the Nokia 2700, Nokia 5130 or the Nokia 3120.
The dying Nokia that I am replacing I have had since 2005 and the battery usually lasted over a week between charges. The phone was an inexpensive one, €60 or something. I expect this kind of performance in my new phone.
Which of these phones have the best battery life?

I would vote for 5130 XpressMusic. 5130 and 2700 are on par in terms of battery life. Feature-wise, the former is a tad better. But, it's all about your preference, and the cost.

  • My one year old macbook pro will no longer play DVD's.. why?

After a year, without any problems playing DVD's, my macbook pro has suddenly decided that it no longer wishes to have anything to do with DVD's and spits them out at the first opportunity. Can anyone out there help to rebuild this once loving relationship.

SuperDrives can fail and you don't have many options in replacing them. You can get Apple to replace it or travel over to OWC - here - and look at the options for replacing the SuperDrive yourself.
Before doing anything, however, I'd take your computer into your local Apple Store and have them diagnose the problem. That won't cost you a thing. If you're still under AppleCare warranty, they should replace the drive for nothing. If you're not under warranty go in knowledgeable, at least, at what it would cost you to replace your SuperDrive yourself - and then find out what Apple would charge.
Good luck - it just sounds as if you SuperDrive has bitten the dust...

  • Which Hard Drive for MacBook Pro 5,5?

    Hi everybody!
I bought a brand new MacBook Pro 5,5 (13,3", 2.53GHz C2D, 4GB RAM, 250GB HD) from an iStore on December 2009. It was a Xmas present from me to myself. I use it mainly for music-video recording and editing with Logic Express, Final Cut X and Ampeg SVX; also have music and movies and other stuff, so I need the space AND memory. I'm not much of a gamer, but I do play some Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Tales from Monkey Island occasionally. I like developing apps for iPod/iPhone with Xcode, but I do that very seldom.
I want do upgrade RAM and HD.
    RAM:
I'm going all the way for 8GB (2x4GB). I've read that the fastest that my Mac can handle is DDR3 1066GHz, so there is no point in getting DDR3 1333GHz right?
    I'm going for these modules ---> http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/
    Hard Drive:
I've filled up the factory 250GB drive. BTW, I have a 1TB Western Digital My Book Studio that I use for Time Machine and make a clone of my drive before any important upgrade just in case. I want to get a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive. So the question is which one of these three?:
    Seagate Momentus XT ---> http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/YST9500562AS/
    Seagate Momentus ---> http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/YST9500420AS/
Western Digital Scorpio Black ---> http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/YWD5000BEKT/
I've heard that Western Digital makes the best hard drives out there and comparing the Scorpio Black with the Momentus the $20 extra and the 3 additional years in warranty sound like a good deal to me, since they are both equivalent (500GB 16MB 7200RPM). Now, talking about the Hydrid one, 32MB is noticeable? and 4GB of NAND memory will act like more RAM or super cache memory, I guess... I've read that is good for three things:
    1. Booting up: That'll be great, but since I rarely boot up more than once a day, is it necessary?
    2. Load frequently used apps: Also great, but I load everything I need and keep it in another desktop while not in use. Again, necessary?
    3. Better performance?: Now, that's grrreat! If that is true, then the 8GB RAM + 4GB NAND will make my Mac noticeably faster, right? Then I'll go for it.
The thing is, with non-hybrid drives I've read that all you have to do is install the OS, copy you stuff and you're good to go. On the other hand, I've read a lot of bad things about this hybrid XT drive, stuff like it's unstable, you have to install a Firmware (how do you do that before installing the drive?), and even some guy using a jumper wire (what is that) to limit the drive's speed from 3Gb/s to 1,5Gb/s!!! (how the **** do I do that? is it really necessary?) And also good things as well, that the booting time is a LOT faster and also it's very fast at loading apps.
Well, I hope you can help me!
    Thank you for reading
    Cheers.
    Walter

Did you ever get this solved? I am having a very similar problem. I haven't tried replacing the hard drive yet. When I boot into the Recovery HD, disk utility works fine and says the HD is fine.

  • MIDI CONTROLLERS WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOSE AND WHY?

    Between M-Audio 8v2 , M-Audio 02 , M-AUDIO 49E and M-Audio axiom 25. Which one of these would you choose and why?

    The Axiom 25.
For the rotary encoders, pads and memory.
I'd take this over the 49 because both of the keyboards will be pitiful and your better of getting a full size board with hammer action if its about the "piano" feel. These things are great to have at hand when fiddling with synths while setting up in logic.

  • Wich one of these or any FM Transmitter's work with a NANO?

I am looking for a good FM Transmitter and i saw this Monster iCarPlay Wireless FM Transmitter for Apple iPod with Dock Connection at Best Buy and i was woundering if it will work with a NANO, this transmitter is Ipod Mini compatible.
If not then there's also the iCarPlay without the Dock Connection, then there's also a Griffin iTrip mini FM Transmitter for Apple iPod mini and Belkin TuneBase FM Transmitter for Apple® iPod mini.
So which one of these would you reccomend and are they even compatible with the NANO?
If they are compatible then i would like one from the 3 i have listed above since i can get a really good price on them at my work.
    Thanks in advance.

Whoa, nelly! Hold up. The iTrip will NOT work. If the transmitter uses the remote port then it will not work with the nano. The nano does not have this port. The iTrip uses this port - it's how the iTrip gets power.
The other transmitters do not use this port. They should work. If you have questions and want a definitive answer email the companies. In my experience the people at Griffin are REALLY nice and sort of amusing. I don't know about monster or belkin but I'd bet they'll answer your questions, too.
I'm waiting for griffin to make an FM transmitter for the nano, too.
The monster one looks like it will work.

  • 1Z0-007 or 1Z0-001: which one?

Which one of these should I take? Are they both current? I read in another post that one of them is for 8i, the other is for 9i. I couldn't verify that from the test description.
I am a PL/sql developer, so I think that 1Z0-001 would be better suited for me. After this first exam, my goal is to then learn data warehousing, followed by the Discoverer and BI related stuff.
If I take 1Z0-001, what books or materials are there? I can't find a 1Z0-001 dedicated book. Only a Sybex for 1Z0-007. There's an 8i Sybex book for 1Z0-001.
Has 1Z0-001 been updated for 9i?
