Which one to choose ?

Hi,
I was not sure to post this subject here or in the mac mini forum, but I decided to post it here
I want you to help me in a decission. I want to buy a mac, but I don't know if I have to buy a Mac mini or an iMac. I explain my problem.
I have a monitor (22in), a cordless keyboard and mouse but I'm ... tired of my PC and I want to switch. I love my girlfriend's macbook. I don't know if I have to buy a mac mini and plug my stuff in it, or buy a iMac and use my keyboard and my monitor as second monitor.
I'm not sure which one it the best for price/perf and I want some advice. Can you guys (or girls :P) help me.
I know that the Mac mini is ... mini and non-evoluting but it cost 800$ to get the faster one. Then, there is a iMac, which is faster than the mac mini but cost 1500 for the faster 20in. I also know that the iMac include keyboard, mouse, iSight and it's integrated monitor.
Does the iMac worth the extra 700$.
I need some power to run on or 2 vm and probably some game...
Help me with pros and cons to help me to choose please.
Oh, I forgot, I'm not sure if I want a laptop... but if it's better depending on your point... maybe I can choose laptop :P
Thanks

I'm an IT instructor and work out of both a Mac and PC lab being of the firm opinion that a tech worker who only knows Windows is like an employee of a quick oil change shop calling himself an auto mechanic. Shortly after the Intel Macs came out I bought a refurb mini and played with it a long time, upgraded and modded it, and generally went geeky on it. Good fun. The mini is a strong performer but it does have its flaws. After years of owning minitower Macs I bought a top line 24" iMac this spring. It does blow the mini out of the water. A very sweet machine.
As an aside, I was quite amazed by BootCamp. Since every peripheral I own is either FireWire or USB based, installing XP on the mini was having a PC (when I needed a PC). My winbox sat unused for several months and after I bought the iMac I sold it. It is really sweet to be running XP in virtualization (using Parallels Desktop) to run browsers in Windows while I'm running browsers in the Mac (and even more browsers in Ubunta if I want) to test out my web site updates. That was 90% of the winbox's task in life. Yep, I think the iMac will do you.

  • SQL Installation for SharePoint 2013 - Windows Firewall - Profile - domain, Public and Private - Which ones to choose?

    Hi there,
I am setting up SQL Server (to be used in our SharePoint 2013 farm).
The Firewall exception for SQL server gives me three choices in Profile section as
    Domain, Public and Private profiles
Which ones should I choose please?
    Thank you so much.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to set the firewall exception for SQL server.
Domain profile—This profile is active when the server is connected to an Active Directory (AD) domain via an internal network. This is the profile that's typically active, because most servers are members of an AD domain.
Private profile—This profile is active when the server is a member of a workgroup. Microsoft recommends more restrictive firewall settings for this profile than for the domain profile.
Public profile—This profile is active when the server is connected to an AD domain via a public network. Microsoft recommends the most restrictive settings for this profile.

  • GPU Acceleration. Which one to choose for Premiere CC: CUDA or OpenCL?

If anyone has any experience regarding CUDA vs OpenCL acceleration in Premiere Pro CC, I would really appreciate your thoughts on this:
I have a Sager 8270 laptop with an nVidia GTX770M video card with 3GB GDDR5 VRAM that I need to exchange since the one I got is defective.  I can either exchange it for the same model, or an identically spected model with an AMD Radeon HD  8970M Graphics with 4GB GDDR5 VRAM.  Which one should I choose?  Is CUDA acceleration inherently better than OpenCL for Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop?  Is it the other way around, or are they about the same?
Do AMD cards that aren't on Adobe's officially supported list of cards work the same as unsupported nVidia cards?  Neither one of these two cards are on the list, but in CC, my GTX770M works fine without any hacks.
Any info on this is much appreciated, including links to other relevant articles/threads! (I found the 'OpenCL vs Cuda for CS6' thread but it didn't help)
    Thank you!
In case this helps, here are my laptop's specs:

  • Which one to choose the G5 2.5 DP or the G5 dual core 2.3?

I'm going to change my computer yet I'd like to stay Classic compatible for a while. Which of the 2 theme machines would you recommend? One has a slower CPU but more L2 cache, one has faster RAM but slower bus, one has better graphics card, more RAM can be added... As you can see in my profile I mainly work with Pro Tools LE 7.4 (mainly audio to video post production) and Logic 8 (and am aware it's graphic speed hungry) + Kontakt3, Absynth4, Stylus RMX, PlugSound Pro and others for music composing. I know you would recommend the Quad but I can't afford it. I just want to sell the iMac while it's worth something and upgrade to a reasonable machine for not too much money. Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

  • Alerts, Alerts, Alerts, Which ones to choose?

    Hi to all,
There are so many choices when it comes to selecting from alerts. I know there is no correct answer to the question and you can choose anything you like and even emalgamate certain functions within alerts to you re liking.
I am a Junior DBA and am preparing myself by trying to formulate a day by day, week by week, month by month schedule of tasks that need to be done within the life of a DBA.
The scenario is; I am currently looking after 3 support contracts, They all have a multitude of needs and wants from their DB's, ranging from eBusiness Suites, 9i Apps Servers, 9.2 Db's and 10gDB as well as Apex.
The first thing I wanted to tackle is which Alerts are the best to be monitoring. I don't want to pick everything because this will cause a lot of jobs being ran when they don't need to be. I also know that there are lots of tick boxes, when setting up alerts, that lead to the same answer. i.e. lack of space.
Has anyone in the community set a "Alerts Rule of Thumb" or have any suggestions on tackling the problem.
Any help from the community would be great!
Look forward to hearing from you all.
    Thanks again.

    System stats outside DB:-
Available device disk space to grow into if you use autoextend. Alert on 80% full.
Alert on system runqueue being higher then 4 times the number of CPU's.
Alert on 100% memory and hard paging activity.
Alert on high IO (You will need a benchmark of average IO before setting so monitor IO)
    DB stats to alert on:-
    Archive area space.
Tablespace rapid growth. Keep a history table and alert on growth over threshold. Perhaps 200M you chose your threshold...........
    TEMPspace 80%
Tablespace freespace threshold 200MB free at all times in all tablespaces.....? Up to you. Depends on autoextend or not. and system storage available.
To start you off the above should do others may add more?

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M or 780M iMac, which one to choose for PS CS6?

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy a new iMac 27", 16MB, 3 TB fusion drive. But for the graphics I don't know (and cannot find) what is best (would be sufficient) for Photoshop CS6 (and Lightroom-5). Would the standard GeForce GTX 775M 2GB be enough for my use or will the GeForce GTX 780M 4GB give a really better performance? It’s not the budget that’s holding me, but sometimes you get too much unused power in your Mac. I use Photoshop and Lightroom for (sometimes extensive) photo editing and not for video or 3D.
    Murk

    Musch Imac,
Did you ever post your findings?
I'm in a similar situation.  I want to get a new Imac in the very near future (few weeks max).
The areas i'm not sure about getting as options are:
    1) I5 vs. I7 -> tho leaning towards I7
    2) Nvidia GPU 775m 2gb vs. 780m 4gb  -> tho leaning towards 775m
From my research if I go with the I7 then I could probably skimp on the GPU and get the 2GB 775M
Currently I do not nor do I plan on any gaming.   Photo and video editing is at a bare minimum - HOWEVER, photo and video editing is something I'm interested in and would like to pursue.  With the Imac, once you buy it, you can NOT change or upgrade.  So i'm thinking better to be safe than sorry.
Having said that, do my poins 1 and 2 above make better sense?
    Thanks,

  • Which One Would You Buy?

Hello to All - My brother already has a 240GB Crucial M500 installed in one laptop, and now he wants to buy a new Crucial SSD around 250GB in size for another machine. He wanted to buy another M500, but they're no longer available, and he isn't too sure which one to choose from the current models. Given the choice, and regardless of price, would you choose the BX100, the MX100, or the MX200?

Thanks for your quick responses, and the link to the article on anandtech.com in particular.   ***Edited to remove Crucial competitor***

I am about to buy my first ipad but don't know which one to choose and all the information baffles me!!  I will use it for email, browsing, watching films, general things like that.  Please help?

I'm sure others will disagree, but I'm all about saving $.  I would start by looking online at the Apple store for refurbished devices.  I would also get MORE memory than yout think you will ever need.  The    stuff we have seems always to expand to fill the space available.  I wouldn't get one with cellular capability unless you really, really need it...

  • Currently on 10.4.11. Is 10.5 or 10.6 worth the upgrade? If so, which one?

Headline speaks for itself. I have a 5 year old MacBook Intel Core Duo running on 10.4.11.
It's been a good computer, but have filled up the hardrive and notice slower performance, my airport has been spotty ever since last summer (I've switched out cards, and have been told it could be the OS). I feel its time for an upgrade but was curious if the new OS were worth going to and if so, which one to choose or should I just get more memory and a larger HD?
    Thanks.

    You can upgrade.
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Leopard System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
    a DVD drive >built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
Whether upgrading or not is your decision based on what you need and what you are willing to do in order to facilitate the upgrade.
As for more memory and bigger hard drive, I'd so absolutely do that.
Minor consideration is whether the cost of doing the upgrades versus selling or donating the computer isn't worth the cost of buying a new one.

  • I need opinions. I currently on dilemma on buying iPod Touch 4 or Samsung Galaxy Tab. Comparing these two, which one is better? Why? Tq.

Well, I want to buy a new gadget for myself. But I currently don't know which one to choose yet. Both iPod Touch 4 and Samsung Galaxy Tab are great inventions! But i can't afford to buy both of them. So i'm asking all of you, any ideas or opinions on these two gadget? Which one is better and why? What do iPod 4 have that Samsung Tab don't have and vice versa. Thank you so much if you replying this.

I'm having the same issues you are having on my S3.  I was on the phone with tech support (Verizon) last Friday for about an hour.  I had to get a bit nasty with the tech when he attempted to blame Samsung for this (Samsung didn't release that update without Verizon's OK- and have you noticed Verizon has added their logo to the startup now?).
My data usage has gone up, battery draining much faster (and I have an extended battery!) and I had to re-load some of my widgets on the phone (including the My Verizon widget).  The tech had me start the phone in Safe Mode (holding down the power, volume rocker and Home button at the same time until the Samsung logon screen shows then let go of the power button while continuing to hold the other two buttons until the phone logs on completely).
Whatever he did remotely seemed to make the phone act better yet he decided I need the update 'reflashed' to the phone.  First he credited my account $30 to take care of any possible data overages.  He then contacted my local Best Buy store to see if they could 'reflash' (upload the update again) the phone.
I went to Best Buy and had it done the next day.  I think the phone was better before the 'reflash'!  The tech gave me his personal Verizon cell number so I will be calling him back today.
An update for the update is coming yet the release date hasn't been confirmed.  The tech said my account will be monitored for any overages in which I will received credits to cover it.
Good luck, Ginger- and I agree with you: if this doesn't get fixed I will move my business to T-Mobile!

  • Which one I should choose ?

I'm a beginner and I have no idear which one I should choose:JB5.0,VJ++ or anyone else.I'm looking foward some suggestions about it.
    Thank for your help.

Ive seen the suggestions of willright, morgalr,DrClap, and jsalonen. Thank for your helps. Ive also heard some evaluations about VJ++ as DrClap said, and it doesnt matter whether its free or not, but now I maintain JB is more suitable cause I think JDKs form Sun are difficult to understand. Im not so bright that I like visual platform and Ill go to see the Forte you advised. Thank you very much!

hi, i got Macbook Pro 2007, OS X 10.5.8, I would like to update my system, which one I should choose? tks

Mountain Lion is the current version of the latest OS, with Mavericks coming this fall.
However, I would suggest that you simply upgrade to Snow Leopard -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard. It's a very good, very fast OS and, best of all, it can still run those PPC apps that you may be using.
