Which optical drive is good for my macbook air?

which optical drive is good for my macbook air?

That's a bit like asking what type of car you should buy ...
I have used Apple's USB SuperDrive, and am happy with it.

How do I know which Hard Drive to get for my MacBook 2006? The old Hard Drive is a Toshiba (MK8034GSX) S/N Z6APT2XUT 9H5 EC. A?

I've put a 250gb 7200rpm drive in an Early 2006 with no problems.

Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

  • How does disk utility decide which optical drive to use for burn?

This is a somewhat daft question and purely out of interest.
How does disk utility decide which optical drive bay to open for burning?
I have two drives in a MacPro and both have the same capabilities (DVD-RW). Why does it sometimes open the lower one, and sometimes the top one?

The estimate is based on how long it already took to do how many blocks, and how many blocks are left to do. If you told it to overwrite 35 times, it will be a long, long time before it completes.
The estimate is made grossly large by the presence of Bad Blocks that need to be Read during the test (not the case with Erase and Write Zeroes).
Each Block is written with some redundancy bits, so that small errors can be corrected on reading. A Bad Block causes the drive to re-read. and re-read, and re-read, in hopes of getting correctable data the next time. This should NOT be an issue in writing. But if the drive stops responding (which can and does happen with a bad drive) the Erase function will just sit there, thinking it is making progress, and stretching out the time.
    Thanks, Grant.
If I read your reply correctly, Erase and Zero Out free space shouldn't elongate the process, because there's no read occurring.
The drive will not be Mounted while Disk Utility works on it, so it will not be on the Desktop. But ask Apple System Profiler \[ About this Mac > More Info > Serial ATA ] if the drive is still THERE . If it cannot be seen, you have your answer -- the drive dropped out of sight while being tested -- Bad Drive.
Well, now I am confused. It's a FW800 drive. It's on the Desktop. And it appears under FireWire in System Profiler. AND Disk Utility shows a mount point. But the Unmount and Eject buttons are grayed out.
Will the drive be mounted if it fails to respond to Disk Utility? That doesn't seem to make sense.
How do I determine its status? It appears to be stuck at "1 day, 5 hours" but it'll take an hour for that to change. I think it's been that long since I first noticed the time.

  • External Drive to play DVDs on Macbook Air

Does anyone have a recommendation of which external drive to purchase for my Macbook air so I can play my DVDs and load Microsoft Office onto my Macbook Air?

It's a subjective questions since each user will have preferences that vary from one to another. I have an Apple External Superdrive for the MacBook Air. I tend to favor the matching asthetics and support. Many "generic" external drives will work just fine. I have a Toshiba external for one of my netbooks, and it works too.
Realize that the Apple unit will not function on any other computer, if that is important to you. It runs $79.00, which is a tad more pricey than your "run-of-the-mill" external DVD.

  • Do I really need an optical drive (external) for my MacBook Air to install Win 7  with Bootcamp?

I have a Macbook Air (11" if it matters, the tiny one) that was purchased late last year, new.  I would like to install Bootcamp and be able to boot into Windows 7, 64 bit.  I have a Windows 7 Professional disk, which I would have to find an optical drive of some sort to install.  The Boot Camp PDF guide doesn't mention the use of any kind of USB bootable install.  In fact, I often see (on Apple support pages) that an external optical drive is required for Macbook Airs.
Is this the case?  If not, does anyone have any advice on how to make sure this goes smoothly?  I'm a bit of a newbie to Macs.   Thanks.
(Note: I didn't select my OSX operating system, but it's been updated regularly.)

Thank you Rysz, but (if you scroll up & read my original post you will discover) I don't own my new MacBook Pro...yet!  I'm just researching ahead of time to help me make the decision.  The customized MBP I have saved in my cart is over $3000 (incl the 3-yr support plan).  So it's going to take me a little bit of research before I decide or before I can really justify the purchase.
I just wanted to be prepared for all the inevitable technical / learning-curve headaches that I will experience IF I take the plunge.   And as everyone has experienced, when you're new to and making your first purchase of a different technology, and you don't know what to expect about a purchase, you ultimately get it home, set it up and find it didn't come with all the necessary interface devices, converters or cables, etc.  And of course the online purchase procedure wizard doesn't tell you or ask you what else you will need if you want to perform a specific task.
But I'm sure (if) once I do make the purchase, I will definitely be back here to pick everyone's brains!  These communities are fantastic.   Thanks again!

  • Which external hard drive is best for the MacBook Pro? Can I use the SuperDrive?

I am looking to buy a new external hard drive for my new MacBook Pro and just want the best one for this laptop. Can i use the SuperDrive?  It looks like the SuperDrive is for the MacBook Air but wasn't sure if it could be used with the Pro as well.

Apple does not make external harddrives, except maybe the TimeCapsule which is Router/HD combo for use with the TimeMachine software.

There are many to choose from, and you will I sure get much advise across the board.
I would stay away from WesternDigital.
Othere then that OWC are a dependable supplier.
I am using a 1TB/QuadInterface/DiskGo/ by Edge  they had a very sweet back to school discount promo.
Look around for your "sleek and thin in design" and a good deal as they all go on sale periodicly.
Think along the lines of USB 3, Thunderbolt if your machine supports it or at a minimum FireWire800.

  • Which mac pc is good for iPad development in between mac mini or mac book pro

which mac pc is good for iPad development in between mac mini or mac book pro so give me details which is much more better for ios development

The best thing for iOS development is your imagination. Coming up with unique creative apps is what’s most important. I've had a mini since they first came out, and I think it's the best desktop around. However you may not want a desktop because you're more mobile when you work on apps. With the mini you can use a much bigger screen (I use a 80 inch) but the laptop has a slightly better processor (if you decide to pay extra for it). I'm learning app development also and a laptop would drive me crazy, but it's a personal choice, so you first need to decide where you are going to be while you're developing. If it’s at home or a office then the mini might be better. The mini and the macbook pro are both two incredible products. I don’t think you can make a wrong decision as far as which one handles app design better. They’re both great in that department.

This is not difficult and you will not have to download from the app store.
your computer has what is called  a recovery partition that came with it.
simply hold cmd+R while you boot up. let go a second after you hear the chime.
you will boot into the recovery partition.
Use disk utlity to format your usb drive and then exit Disk utlity and go to Reinstall Mountain Lion.
it will ask  you which disk you want to install ML onto. Choose your new USB drive.
    easy peasy

  • Optical drive in early 2008 black MacBook

When I tried to burn anything on DVD (DL) I'm always unable to do it. How can I find out if the optical drive is OK? Is there any software for this situation? Can you recommend me where I can buy a new one or what kind of optical drive will work with my MacBook?

    Hey jurajb,
Have you ever been able to burn discs? What error are you seeing?
Look in System Profiler(Applications>Utilities) & click the *Disc Burning* tab on the left-hand side.
Look at *Write Strategies*. You should see something like this:
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
    What's listed for yours?

  • Advice on how to format an external hard drive for a MacBook Air

I have an external USB hard drive plugged into a 64GB MacBook Air. How should I format the hard drive so that when I run out of room on the small 64 GB SSD drive on the MacBook Air, it will start putting some iTunes or other files onto the external hard drive? I only put iTunes and other small music files on the MacBook Air in order to save room. I do have iTunes set for iCloud.

You cannot format a drive so that files will be automatically put on that drive when you run out of room on another drive. Transferring the files must be done specifically by you. You will need to learn how to manage free space on the SSD because 64 GBs is a bit small for much more than OS X.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Is there a way for my macbook air (running Lion) to access an external hard drive on my Imac (running snow leopard) specifically for Iphoto and itunes?

Is there a way for my macbook air (running Lion 10.7.2) to access an external hard drive on my Imac (running snow leopard 10.6.8) specifically for Iphoto and itunes?

Yes. For those two applications specifically there is sharing. This presumes both computers are on and connected to the same network.
In iPhoto, enable sharing by (on the iMac) going to the iPhoto menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my photos. You can either share the entire library or only selected albums. Now on your MacBook Air, in iPhoto, go to the same preference pane and select Look for shared photos.
iTunes has something similar. In the iTunes menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my library on my local network. On the other computer, look in the left column for SHARED and select the iMac. You can now play that music on the MacBook Air.
There are other ways to share files but for those two applications this is the simplest way.
    Best of luck.

How can I purchase an extra optical drive retaining bracket for my IdeaCentre K330? There was one retaining bracket that came with the DVD optical drive, but I bought a Blu-Ray burner as my second optical drive, and I would like to install it using the tool-less retaining bracket that came with the first drive. I couldn't find a part number for it online.

  • Which Os x is better for a MacBook 1.1?

    Hi.
Which Os x is better for a MacBook White 1.1.For Networking, movies and music.
    10.5.8 or 10.6.8 ?
spec: 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo
             1 Gb ddr2
    Thanks

You need to install 10.6.8 because 10.5.8 is no longer receiving security updates and increasingly applications are not compatible with it. However, I recommend increasing your RAM from 1 GB to at least 2 GB, 4 if your system will support.
