Which optical drives support HiFi mp3

OK just got this mega pc up and running...
Neat stuff really, anyway, I've put an LG cdrw drive in it
and all works but the abilty to play mp3s in the hifi mode(computer off)
does any one know which cdrw drives work?
I've read somewhere (can't find it now) that msi's drives work but was hoping
someone here would know of other drives that will play mp3s.
Frank

:biggthumbsup:OK I just updated the firmware from MSI and now
the mp3's play just fine...

  • Optical drive supports DVD-RAM?

I have DVD-RAM tool on my laptop, model 129(with combo drive), but I don,t know whether my optical drive supports it or not. How I can know?
Also need some easy information about DVD-RAM.

Chances are if you have the software on your computer it has DVD-Ram. Here is basically what I found at a website trying to explain DVD ram and how it works. Hope this helps.
DVD-RAM (DVDRandom Access Memory) is a disc specification presented in 1996 by the DVD Forum, which specifies rewritable DVD-RAM media and the appropriate DVD writers. DVD-RAM media have been used in computers as well as camcorders and personal video recorders since 1998.
The term DVD-RAM is a misnomer; the name is based on the (erroneous) abbreviation for RAM, meaning "read-and-write memory" - the opposite of ROM (Read-Only Memory). However, RAM actually stands for Random Access Memory (computer chips) and DVDs inherently cannot use the random access method.
Compared with other writeable DVDs, DVD-RAM is more closely related to hard disk technology, as it has concentric tracks instead of one long spiral track. Unlike the competing formats DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW, special DVD burning software is not required to write or read DVD-RAMs on a computer. DVD-RAMs can be accessed like a usual floppy disk or hard drive.
Mac OS(Mac OS 8.6 or later), Linux and Microsoft Windows XP support DVD-RAM operation directly, while earlier versions of Windows require device drivers or the program InCD. The optical drives shipped with Apple Macintosh computers do not support DVD-RAM operation, but a third party DVD-RAM-compatible drive can be connected and used directly with Mac OS.

  • Which flash Drives support OS X Mavericks

which flash drives support OS X Mavericks

Virtually any flash drive, thumb drive, or whatever you want to call them will work with Mavericks if they have a USB or even Firewire interface. As far as I know, all of them will come formatted FAT or ExFAT and Mavericks can read and write to FAT or ExFAT volumes. Personally unless there is a necessity for compatibility with Windows boxes I generally reformat mine to Mac OS Extended (journaled) for full feature compatibility with the Mac, but that is just me.

  • How does disk utility decide which optical drive to use for burn?

This is a somewhat daft question and purely out of interest.
How does disk utility decide which optical drive bay to open for burning?
I have two drives in a MacPro and both have the same capabilities (DVD-RW). Why does it sometimes open the lower one, and sometimes the top one?

The estimate is based on how long it already took to do how many blocks, and how many blocks are left to do. If you told it to overwrite 35 times, it will be a long, long time before it completes.
The estimate is made grossly large by the presence of Bad Blocks that need to be Read during the test (not the case with Erase and Write Zeroes).
Each Block is written with some redundancy bits, so that small errors can be corrected on reading. A Bad Block causes the drive to re-read. and re-read, and re-read, in hopes of getting correctable data the next time. This should NOT be an issue in writing. But if the drive stops responding (which can and does happen with a bad drive) the Erase function will just sit there, thinking it is making progress, and stretching out the time.
    Thanks, Grant.
If I read your reply correctly, Erase and Zero Out free space shouldn't elongate the process, because there's no read occurring.
The drive will not be Mounted while Disk Utility works on it, so it will not be on the Desktop. But ask Apple System Profiler \[ About this Mac > More Info > Serial ATA ] if the drive is still THERE . If it cannot be seen, you have your answer -- the drive dropped out of sight while being tested -- Bad Drive.
Well, now I am confused. It's a FW800 drive. It's on the Desktop. And it appears under FireWire in System Profiler. AND Disk Utility shows a mount point. But the Unmount and Eject buttons are grayed out.
Will the drive be mounted if it fails to respond to Disk Utility? That doesn't seem to make sense.
How do I determine its status? It appears to be stuck at "1 day, 5 hours" but it'll take an hour for that to change. I think it's been that long since I first noticed the time.

  • Which optical drive is quietest ?

I am thinking about about getting a Mini for use as a music server, CD player and DVD player (maybe HD eventually).
But which of the optical drives is quieter, the Combo or Superdrive ?
(I don't particularly need the DVD burning facility).

Neither is particularly quiet in the mini, as those who have had theirs spin up at the start of playback will attest! Mine doesn't do that often or for long, but when it does, it is difficult to avoid noticing!
However, I can say that I have a mini with combo drive used as an entertainment server and hooked up to my TV. One of its uses is to play DVDs, which it does perfectly well, and makes very little sound in the process. It does not, however, get used to play music CDs, since those are all in the iTunes library and played from there.
ON EDIT: I omitted to note that the mini DOES spin up when an audio CD is first mounted - after which it goes back to normal noise levels (barely any noise at all).

  • XMLType, TopLink 1013dp3r2 = which JDBC driver supports XMLType?

I'm using the oracle thin driver 10.1.0.4 and getting this exception when reading an XMLType column that is mapped to a string:
[exec] Exception Description: The object [oracle.sql.OPAQUE@f63c6a], of class [class oracle.sql.OPAQUE], could not be converted to [class java.lang.String].
    [exec] Internal Exception: java.lang.ClassCastException
    [exec] at oracle.toplink.exceptions.ConversionException.couldNotBeConverted(ConversionException.java:59)
    [exec] at oracle.toplink.xdb.DirectToXMLTypeMapping.getAttributeValue(DirectToXMLTypeMapping.java:122)
Reading the forum, it seems like only certain drivers support XMLType but doesn't mention which ones.
Which JDBC drivers will get rid of this error?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I'm not using TopLink at all.
Right now i'm just letting the oc4j load ojdbc14dms.jar through the shared-lib "oracle.jdbc". Although now i'm gettting ClassNotFounds with XMLType because it's not in the same classloader as oracle.sql.OPAQUE. XMLType is loaded though the application classpath.
I've added some more details on this post.

  • Will W520 optical drive support DVD+R DL

Before I buy the DVD -9  will the W520  drive  recognize the DVD+R DL discs?
    Thanks

Easy way is to try ebay some sellers sell single discs to try out.
However, I believe that the drive as it is modern should read and write just about everything.
I've found all laptop burners to be fussy though on certain brands and dyes.
Typically if they do work they burn at very slow speeds than rated.
This is just a generalisation on many laptop burners ive used in past.
Personally if it's important to you as far as media compatibility and performance and burn success I would buy an external 5.25" drive in an an enclosure as the form factor allows for better quality output in general.

  • Mega PC Optical Drive Compatibility List

So you've just parted with the cash for your shiny new Mega PC barebones, now you have to choose which optical drive (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW) you want to go inside. Of course MSI recommend you use one of their optical drives, but they would say that!  You might prefer other manufacturer's units (myself am very happy with NEC drives) so the aim of this thread is to provide as comprehensive as possible a list of drives **known** to work correctly with the Mega series, as well as pointing out drives to avoid.
If you have a drive that is not listed here, but works correctly in hifi and PC mode, or works fine with a couple of quirks, then please post below, and i'll add them into this post at a later date. Please state the manufacturer (eg NEC), model code (eg ND2510A) and drive type (CD-ROM, DVD-RW etc), and i'll make sure you get credited with the comment.
Unfortunately, I have not added some drives listed in the old thread due to not enough information being given (eg Toshiba DVD-ROM doesn't really narrow a particular model down). Comments from users are credited to them.

It appears that you did not understand the post that I made.
If you purchase a high end notebook that has a chipset with sata controllers that support SATA3 then SATA3 devices will run at SATA3 bandwidth. Your notebook is not one that does.
It would not matter which brand you chose.
If you decided to economize and purchase a mainstream notebook, then the issue would still be the same.
Notebooks are not created equally. It is the same with desktop PCs.
That is why each manufacturer has a tiered structure to accomodate the economic means of the target market.
    1) Entry level (basic chipset and CPU)  $
    2) Mainstream (mid level chipset and mainstream CPU)  $$
    3) High end.  (high end chipset and high performance CPU, wifi adapter and even SSD hard disks)  $$$

  • T400 Optical drive question ?

    Hello,
My company gave me a new T400 laptop, and it's great. I have one question , does the optical drive support DVD9 (read and write ) and does it support blu ray ?
    Thanks

That would depend on what drive you have installed.  The easiest way to check would be to load a burning utility and see what the device capabilities are.

  • Option to choose DVD or Bluray optical drives

Does "DVD Studio 4" have any way of selecting which optical drive to use for a burn? I have a DVD burner and Bluray burner. I can't get it to always pick the DVD burner when I want it?
any help would be appreciated seeing as I paid a grand for this suite of products
    thanks

    Welcome to the Boards
DVD SP 4 will not make blu-ray discs (the newest Studio has some limited ability to do blu-ray, but not DVD SP 4)
What you should be able to do is go to Format in the drop down to target it

  • Upgrading Optical Drive.

    Hi Everyone,
I am a new mac user and bought a macbook 2 months ago. I bought the low end one thinking that if I don't like macs I wouldn't of wasted a lot of money. Well i'm shooting myself in the foot now b/c I love this computer I just would love to upgrade my optical drive to a superdrive. Any idea about going about doing this? I'm sure there are a couple. I was also wondering which optical drive does mac use there own?
    thanks Mirdock

At this point, unless you really needed to be able to burn DVDs on the go, it would be a lot easier and cheaper to just get an external DVD burner.
They can be had for less than $100 and don't involve voiding your warranty.

  • Does Macbook Pro Retina support non-Apple optical drives?

So, Im facing the decision of which Macbook to invest in. I understand the new Retina Macbook Pro does not include an optical drive, which is a problem for me as I am a gamer usually using Bootcamp. I see that Apple offers a "superdrive" though it only supports CDs and DVDs and if I am to buy a seperate optical drive I believe I should go for one that also has Blu Ray support. So my question is if I get a third party drive will it work with my Apple computer?
    Thanks for your time

  • After installing an SSD into my optical bay, I've found out I need EFI Firmware Update 2.2. I can only find 2.3 which is not supported on my Mac. What can I do?

After installing an SSD into my optical bay, I've found out I need EFI Firmware Update 2.2. I can only find 2.3 which is not supported on my Mac. What can I do?

You do not want EFI 2.2, it bricked many 2011 MacBook Pro machines.
EFI 2.3 is the fix. Software Update should install it if you need it, but it goes to the boot drive as that's where the hidden EFI resides.
Check out this link of machines and their EFI versions
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Also if your SSD should be in the hard drive bay as it makes a better boot/applicaitions drive, not a good storage drive as it wears out with repeated use and is not "scrubbable" like a regular hard drive
The hard drive should be in the optical bay and used as a storage drive, you have things all messed up inside your machine, Apple doesn't support or expect the optical drive to be used as such to begin with, then as a boot drive is just asking for trouble. So use the optical bay as storage and not as a boot bay.
Also you can't install OS X or Windows or use a Firmware restore disk because it only works from a internal optical drive, which you have removed.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
You need to learn all about cloning etc., as you have no other means to boot the machine.
