Which "organizer/catalog" to use.

Greetings all,
I am a recent convert to the Mac platform and I'm struggling with the best way to do set up a workflow. When I set up the Mac I imported my photo images to iPhoto.
Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Lightroom 2 are the other applications I have on my computer. The Mac version of PSE does not contain the "Organizer" which is in the Windows version and that's fine; and LR2 has something called the "Catalog".
Here are some of my questions:
1. Is the LR2 catalog another full copy of all the image files or simply an index with thumbnail images? If it's an index what is the best way to keep it in sync with iPhoto?
2. Depending on the answer to #1, how do I import the images from iPhoto into the Lightroom 2 catalog? When I try the LR2 import function, the iPhoto library is not selectable. I have been told iPhoto uses some sort of Apple proprietary software.
The bottom line is, what is the best way to set up an efficient workflow so I can use PSE6 and LR2? Should I forget about using iPhoto?
Thanks in advance
Hector Caroselli

I totally agree with Geoff's conclusion, but in my experience, the iPhoto library is not like the database, nor the Previews nor the image files. Everything is bundled up in one package; you can view contents by holding down the Control key on the package, but inside it's a mess.
One way to get out of it is to Export all images at original size; there may be other ways.

I have used lightroom for ~2 years and have lightroom 5.5 installed on a PC. Yesterday evening I uploaded a new set of photos which I cataloged and rated as usual. After that when I switched to the develop module trouble began. First thing was when using the crop tool the picture would disappear and only reappear once I closed the tool. Then exposure and White balance changes would change the histogram but not the appearance of the photo. Finally clipping was also not appearing on the picture. I first reuploaded the photos. No effect. Then I reinstalled lightroom. No effect. Help please!

  • I want to use AirPlay and share an external hard drive, which AirPort should I use?

I am looking into buying an AirPort. I want to be able to share an external hard drive over it and use the AirPlay feature (by plugging in my speakers through an audio jack). It seems that the hard drive feature is only available on the extreme and the AirPlay feature is only available on the express. Are there any ways around this, and does anyone have suggestions on which AirPort to buy to achieve this?

If you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, the files will be copied to your hard disk and all the organization done in iPhoto09 will be carried forward to Organizer catalog. This can be done if you have enough space on your hard disk. However if you want to use Organizer solely + not create duplicate copies of your images, you can import photos directly from the Hard Disk. Ensure to write all metadata to files within iPhoto so that when the same photos are imported into Organizer, the tagging done is brought along.

  • Converting Organizer Catalog created for version 8 to Elements 11 errors out. Help?

The conversion of the Organizer Catalog version 8 to use with Elements 11 errors out. It asked me to repair the old catalog. I went back to 8, repaired it and optmized it as other articles mentioned, and still did  not work. would somebody please help me?

It’s often a question of needing full permission settings and the easiest way to make it work is from an administrators account directly from the desktop which bypasses the welcome screen background processes.
Make a shortcut for organizer as follows:
On Windows right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose New >> Shortcut
    Browse to Computer OS C:
Find the PSE Organizer application in Program Files or Program Files (x86) on Windows 7 - 64 bit.
    C: >> Program Files (x86) >> Adobe >> Elements 11 Organizer
Within the Elements 11 Organizer folder find the application PhotoshopElementsOrganizer (not Photoshop Elements 11.0)
Select (highlight) PhotoshopElementsOrganizer and click Next
    Then click Finish.
Now right-click on your new desktop icon and choose “Run As Administrator” Then authorize by clicking yes in the User Account Control dialog.
    From the Organizer menu click:
    File >> Manage Catalogs
    Then click the “Convert” button
Select your desired catalog from the list of previous versions of PSE to highlight it then click the “Convert” button down below it
You should receive a message when the conversion has been successfully completed and your earlier catalog will be automatically re-named. Choose the new name from the list and click the “Open“ button and you are good to go.

  • Can anyone demystify the PSE Organizer catalog backup options?

I need to backup my catalog--preferably just my catalog, not all my pictures (the picture files themselves are already backed up). More accurately, I would like my automated online backup service (Carbonite) to back up my PSE Organizer catalog for me, just as it has already backed up my pictures. But the catalog is in some caddywompus location that Carbonite doesn't back up by default. I think I can manually override Carbonite's default settings and tell it to back that location up anyway, if I only knew where and what files to look for.
If I click on Help > System Info..., PSE tells me my catalog is located in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\clayscatalog. It doesn't go all the way to the file level, just down to that last folder, which shares the name of my catalog. But I have no idea which file inside of that folder is my catalog, or what to backup. Inside that folder called clayscatalog, there are the following items:
    BreezeData(folder)
    CAXMPFiles(folder)
    syncdb(folder)
    backupCt.dat
    catalog.pse9db
    collstatus.dat
    face.thumb.9.cache
    itemData.mk4
    rmf.3.cache
    tagstatus.dat
    thumb.5.cache
    watch.2.cache
Which of these files/folders should I be targeting for backup, all of them? And which would I browse to find in order to restore my catalog if my computer ever crashed and I needed to do a restore? Assuming all my photos are backed up and able to be restored to the same folder hierarchy, I assume one of these files/folders is going to have that information and be able to restore everything easily, preserving all my photo ratings, captions, tags, etc., right?
It would seem to make sense for the PSE to offer the option when you choose Backup from the file menu to back up all your catalog data only, as opposed to only having the option to backup everything, including all the picture files. Because I'm sure many people, like me, already have their picture files backed up and don't have need for that. Any guidance on this would be much appreciated.
    Clay

    First, short answer : the catalog consists in the whole folder you found. All those files are used in the organizer, but the .cache files which may have a big size will be regenerated by the organizer if they are deleted. The problem is this operation may be very long, so you will be better if you save everything;
If you use the backup and restore feature in the Organizer, you'll only have only to tell the restore process where your backup (of everything, files and folders) is located.

  • How many photos are in Organizer Catalog

How many photos are in my Organizer Catalog?

Sorry if you already know this but I feel it is worth repeating. There are no photos "in" the organizer - the photos are where you put them or have told the organizer/editor to put them.
The organizer database only contains links to your photos which is why you should NOT rename, delete or move a photo by external applications like Windows Explorer of Finder. The organizer does hold a small preview image of very low quality which it uses in the grid view.
If you want to know how many photos have been cataloged, then try going into the thumbnail grid view and ensure that all images are being viewed - i.e. no Back button or Show All button at the top of the grid. There is usually a status line at the bottom of the window which contains a count of images.
If you tell us which operating system you are running on and which version of Photoshop Elements you have, we may be able to help you more.

  • Is it possible to repair an Organizer catalog after a power outage?

I recently had a power outage while I was exporting some photos from Organizer and was unable to open Organizer after that.  I posted a question on Feb 25 at 6:45pm, and Andaleepfatima1 recommended some actions that were very helpful in my being able to set up a second catalog.  I can now go into Organizer using catalog #2, and then into catalog #1 using the catalog manager to switch catalogs.  I still cannot go directly into catalog #1 where all of my albums, slide shows, etc. are.  I repopulated catalog #2 with my photos, and tried to redo an album, but the pictures that I sent into the album display as being very blury, etc.  When I leave Organizer to shut down, I have to leave from Catalog #2 so that I can get back in through it, because I can't start the program if Catalog #1 is the "current" catalog.  Is there any way that I can repair catalog #1's files so that I can get back to normal with the program?  I was using Organizer for all of my organizing.  PSE10, Windows 7, 12GB RAM.  Thank you very much for any ideas you might have.

    Something to try.
We don't know what is wrong in the catalog # 1. Generally it's the catalog.pse11db sqlite database file (I suppose you have PSE11 ?). The repair command should be able to correct many errors in that file, but we don't know if the other files are ok.
If you locate that catalog file (in the menu help/system info) you could try deleting all the other files than the catalog.pse11db : they are automatically rebuilt.
Then close the Organizer and double click the catalog.pse11db, which should open the organizer and the catalog.
(Note that if you don't want to risk deleting the other files, you could make a copy of the whole folder as a backup.)
If that does not work, it would be worth testing the catalog.pse11db file with an sqlite tool, which could be more effective than the Organizer repair command.

  • Be grateful for your help with Photoshop Elements which I have been using for several years.

Be grateful for your help with Photoshop Elements which I have been using for several years.  Does Elements need to have access to ‘My Pictures’ on Windows as when I remove Photos from ‘My Pictures’, Elements later, when backing up, gives a message that it is unable to ‘reconnect’ to the same picture on elements.  On other occasions when removing a photo from Elements catalogue I also get a similar message when backing up saying ‘unable to reconnect’.  1. Is there a relationship between Elements and My Pictures and is Elements dependant on    the Windows ‘My Pictures’? 2. Why does some photos in Elements in some cases cause them to multiply e.g. double; triple; quadruple; and on occasions even more?  Is there something I need to do to stop this or an easy way I can remove the multiples without spending hours doing it manually one by one?  Am I doing something wrong? My O/S is Windows XP SP2 and windows Vista on my Laptop.  I have been using Elements 5 and have just purchased Photoshop Elements 8.0. (Upgrade) and about to install it. Be grateful for any advice as I do enjoy using the program if only I can resolve this issue.  I am not a PC wiz and mainly use Elements to catalogue photos from which I compile collections and from them slide shows with music.  Any advice appreciated Sonny.t PS Have tried to post this previously but without success so hoping to see message appear and a +response

The organizer doesn't care where you send your photos when you download them via the downloader or where they happen to be when you first bring them in if you use the Get Photos command, but once your pics are in the Organizer, you *must* move them from within organizer or it can't find them. You don't have to use My Pictures at all if you don't want to, but regardless of the folder where you put your photos, if you want them someplace else, you use organizer to do it.

Try the change below.  What I did was to create a named simple type for the AttentionTo node.  Here is my understanding (based on this working).  Because you have a simpleType the node cannot accept just any string, it has to be a string of
the type in the simpleType.  That simpleType has no name (thus anonymous).
What I did was to create a named simpleType and used that simpleType as the type for the AttentionTo element.  Then in my XQuery, I cast the value to the name of that type (AttentionToType in my example).
CREATE xml schema collection Test as '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

  • My PSE 5.0 Organizer catalog now won't display any new image from the Editor

Every attempt to Save As from the Editor gets the message, "There was a problem acessing the Organizer catalog.  It may be in use by another process, or a disc error occurred."
Then when I attempt to get the same image using the FIle menu and Get Photos ...From Files and Folders,  even though the newly saved file is correcly in there as shown by the thumbnail, I get this message:
The ODBC data source reported the following error: "[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Acess Driver] Cannot open database 'I'.  It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt."
I have repeatedly shut down the programs and the whole computer, and although this problem occasionally occurred in the past, now that's all I get.
How can I get my Catalog to show these images?

Thanks for your suggestion - Recover did it!  (That may have seemed obvious to you, but not being much of a computer expert, I didn't know enough to even ask the right question.)  I'm so glad to have my Organizer back!

  • Update to Elements 9.0.3 messed up Organizer Catalog

I recently updated my installed copy of Photoshop Elements 9 to version 9.0.3 using the link imbedded in my copy of Elements 9 .  Shortly after I moved to Elements 9 with a successful transfer of my image catalog from Elements 8, I updated to version 9.0.2 without issue.  This time, updating to version 9.0.3 went fine except that imported images (from Canon's ZoomBrowser) now show thumbnails in the Elements Organizer Browser screen with all of the RAW/CR2 thumbnails being grouped together, followed by all of the JPEG thumbnails being grouped together.  I shoot all of my images both as JPEG and RAW files.  Since I started with Photoshop Elements 5, several years ago, my image files that always imported into the Organizer's browser with the JPEG thumbnail showing directly adjacent to the RAW thumbnail.  This is desirable because as I convert and edit a RAW/CR2 image and save it in a stack in the Organizer catalog, I can quickly and easily compare the edited RAW image with the unedited JPEG image.
How do I edit the Elements Organizer, version 9.0.3 to make image thumbnails reside as they did previously (up through version 9.0.2)?
I would uninstall the update, if I could, but I don't see that this can be easily done.  Deleting Elements 9 totally and starting over would cost me my entire image catalog.  I need real help.  Can someone help me?
    Thanks.

Sorry, at 73, figuring out how to do screen shots is a little beyond my experience.  I will try to clarify my situation with words.
I see no Auto-Analysis setting under "Preferences" in the Organizer menu.  I did find Auto-Analysis under the Organizer Edit menu.  I selected my recent Organizer Catalog additions (post update to 9.0.3), checked Auto-Analysis and ran the analysis.  The catalog did not change except that the little Auto-Analysis icon now appears on each of the new Catalog thumbnails.  It does not appear on previous Catalog additions.  Apparently, Auto-Analysis has not previously been run.
All previous Catalog thumbnails have markings of "Version Set" on the RAW thumbnails that reside adjacent to their JPEG thumbnail "versions".  The post update (version 9.0.3) Catalog thumbnails bear no such "Version Set" markings, indicating that the update is not recognizing Version Sets.  That, apparently, is what I need to fix.  How do I tell the Organizer to establish Version Sets?
When I import ("Get Photos") photos into the Photoshop Elements 9.0.3 Organizer/Catalog, I see three "check box" choices:
Get Photos from subfolders (This is checked)
Automatically Fix Red Eyes (This is NOT checked)
Automatically Suggest Photo Stacks (This is checked)
These are currently my only choices when getting photos from Files and Folders.
Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

  • Web Catalog Publishing using MDM RPCM scenario

    Hi Experts
Is it possible to do web catalog publishing using MDM Publisher or Publisher APIs? if yes, where can i get the information on how to proceed with it?
I came across this[thread|Re: Web Catalog Publishing]
where Markus has stated that web catalog publishing is possible with java APIs and SAP is having plans to include that functionality in Publisher tool as well, in its future releases.
I couldnu2019t find any straightforward answer for my question either in MDM Java docs or in Publisher guide.
    Thanks in advance
    SwarnaDeepika

Thank you Markus for the prompt reply.
The link was very helpful. The line
To build dynamic Web sites with complex MDM data layouts
was what i was looking for.
So using the publishing APIs MDM data can be sent through to a web site which acts as a online catalog, can you please confirm?
Can these APIs be used to expose the catalog using enterprise portal as well, instead of a normal website (just like how its done in SRM-MDM catalog)?
P.S: Kindly bear with me, if my questions are silly. An expert's opinion is all i need

  • How to find which devices are still using affected domain controller

    Hi Everyone,
We have a 5 Domain controller's in a Site. And we are going to decommisson one of our affected DC in a site.
Can you please let me know how to find  the log files to see which devices are still using this domain controller.
    Regards,
    Neel kamal

    Neel,
From strictly an Active Directory perspective, there is nothing special you need to do to decommission a domain controller in a site.  There are many processes that automatically balance out and recreate connections as needed without any user intervention.
The DC Locator process will automatically direct clients to active domain controllers, there is nothing you need to do here.
What you need to be concerned with are things like the following:
DNS - Are you running AD integrated DNS and is the DC you are decommissioning hosting that roll - if so, is it the ONLY DC in the
site that is running DNS?  You'll need at least one in the site.
DHCP server - Is the DC you are demoting a DHCP server?  You'll need to account for that.
Global Catalog - Is the DC you are demoting a Global Catalog server?  You'll need at least one in the site.
File Shares - Is the DC hosting any files shares?  You'll need to move those and make sure you redirect your clients.
Was this DC a set as a Preferred Bridgehead Server?  You'll need to undo that first.
Those are the big ones that come to mind.  Decommissioning a DC is easy if you have prepared properly.  The others that have replied have offered some great advice which you should follow.  Do your homework and you should be fine.
    Hope that helps

  • Organizer catalog on network

I have my catalog on my computer which is attached to our home network. I want my husband to be able to access this catalog from his computer. I have PSE7 installed on both computers. When I try to open the catalog on his computer I can get to the folder in doc & setting/all users/appl data/adobe/catalog but there is no catalog there that I can access.
    We are using Windows XP
    Patt Ricketts

    Pat,
Be sure youre navigating to the right folder. Look in Help > System Info for the location of the catalog folder, and then on the other computer, navigate to that folders parent. Can you navigate to the catalog folder using Windows Explorer?
Beware, however, that you may need to configure your catalog specially to allow it to be accessed from over the network and that performance may not be acceptable. See this FAQ:
