Which osX printers keep printing black if color runs out?

need recommendations for a mac osX printer that doesn't stop printing when you run out of colored ink. grrrrrr. my old epson 740 is driving me crazy. i have a full black ink cartridge and an empty color cartridge and it won't print!! grrrrrrrr. i'm telling the document (print dialog options) to print in BLACK but it still doesn't print. i have an epson 740.
need a new printer without this irritating issue.
what do you recommend?
thanks,
amy

If memory serves, Epson printers are true pains when it comes to ink cartridges. I'm pretty sure that they will even keep track of how much ink is used in a cartridge and when it has used as much ink as that cartridge is supposed to capable of holding, it stops printing with that cartridge. Other printers I have known, especially older ones, will just keep attempting to make the cartridge dispense ink until you replace the cartridge.
My printer is an HP DeskJet 882c, and it will, as described above, attempt to print even if the color and/or black cartridges are out. My Deskjet printer is about seven years old, so I can't speak for what HP is doing now, but hopefully it is the same.
Another option is to buy a laser printer. It may cost more up front, but it will save you money in the long run. They aren't too great for photo printing, and color laser printers are rather expensive, but if most of what you are doing is grayscale text and images, a laser printer should be great for you. And if you do need to print color, you have your Epson printer for that.
You will want to do some further research to make your decision, and great places to start are The Apple Store, amazon.com, or your local computer or electronics store. You may also want to re-post this question in printing and faxing.

I have a Office Jet Pro L7780. When I try to print red, the color comes out brown. I have tried replacing all of the ink cartridges, printing from within two different programs (microsoft word and belight business card composer V5) from my Mac, and from within MS Word on my Windows lap top. In all cases if red is called for, I get brown.
I have gone through the printhead cleaning procedure, the alignment procedure and the print quality diagnostics, all to no avail.

  • HP printers stopped printing Black

So, I keep software up to date.  I have 3 printers (don't ask why).  An HP Officejet 6500 E709n that is hardwired to the router (wifi was not good), an HP Officejet 6000 E609n this is connected by wifi but I don't use it much, and an HP LaserJet P2055dn hardwired to the router.  Up until a few days ago all the printers worked fine.  The LaserJet still works (thank goodness!).  However, the 6500 and the 6000 quit printing black.  They'll print color, but no black.  I have uninstalled all HP software and rebooted and reinstalled the software for 10.6.  I've tried the HP software update.  I've tried uninstalling the printers and installing them with every possible option: boujour, hp socket, IP.  Every once in a while when I try to print a page to see if it is working after I've reinstalled one of them, it will print the one page I've asked it to, but then no more.  It pretends to print, it just forgets to put ink on the paper.  So, I know there is ink in both printers, the dashboard says there is, the website connection to the printers says there is, and the black ink is heavy.  Fortunately I still have the one printer, the one I never use.  I figure it was some update by apple that caused the problem, probably when they offered me the HP software update.  It probably contains stuff for Lion, which I don't have.  And, once it got on my computer, I don't seem to have an option to get rid of it.  That's my guess.  I really like my color printers (the 6500 still scans, thank you).  I'd really like to make it work again.  I'd figure it was the printer that was broken if it wasn't that I have two of them that run off the same drivers and both stopped at the same time.  Any help appreciated.  Steve

Wow! It's unfortunate that it took all that time and effort to get it working! At least you have one working printer/scanner again.
I've encountered similar 'everything goes all wrong all at the same time' installs and upgrades, though most were with Windows PC's, servers, or enterprise systems. One of the reasons I turned to Apple in 2007!
I developed a rule many years ago: NEVER download, update, or install software or attempt to fix or install anything with hardware after 10 pm, because you'll likely be up all night. My first attempt to install a new Canon printer/scanner last year was like that. Software CD wouldn't read. Tried WiFi setup. Didn't install properly. Tried USB setup. Couldn't find the printer. TWO brand new USB cables were bad. And on and on...
I had a Canon inkjet a few years ago with one ink sensor that went wonky, and eventually found a Canon tech who sent me a super-secret confidential 'factory reset' button push sequence at power-on that reset ALL stored printer parameters, even page count, and then the printer worked fine for another two years. I don't know if such a thing exists for your HP 6000, but it might be worth a try.
And now, I don't automatically install ANY software updates on any systems.  First I check these forums for problem reports and rants for a week or two, before deciding to install, or not.  Why be an unpaid 'test dummy' for anyone, if you have a choice?
I came up with this graphic several years ago:

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Premier doesn't print black, only color

The OfficeJet Pro 8500 was printing normally, then it began cycling repeatedly through cleaning the printhead so I turned it off and back on. I also replaced the black ink cartridge. Now it prints as requested with normal functionality in my hoome network, but it only prints the color features of a page, not black.
    Please help.

    Hello LindaSN,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with printing black ink.
I do have a few suggestions we can try in that attempt to troubleshoot this issue.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
I have also done some research and I have found a great document that deals with Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-One Printer Series (A909).
Please feel free to write me back if you have any other questions or concerns.
    Cheers,

  • Can I set an HP LJ4000T to stop printing if Tray 2 runs out of paper while leaving AUTO CONTINUE ON?

I'm dealing with an issue here where I'd like my HP LJ4000T to stop printing completely if Tray 2 runs out of paper.  Currently it automatically prints to Tray 3 which has a different paper type.
On the other hand, I'd like to keep AUTO CONTINUE set to ON.  Can this be done or is this just a direct contradiction?

I agree anti-relay can be using UBE feature. However, there is serious problem in reject the spam mail. My nms is using UBE feature to stop spam mail. According to the work flow of the UBE, the mail is received by nms completely and UBE is going to invesgate the mail address. Although UBE can stop the spam mail, the spam mail have a trouble in returning the mail to the sender. The reason is the sender address is usually not existed in the world. That will cause a lot of mail waiting in the mail queue.
In my experience, do not use UBE for anti-relay.

  • Printing Problem - Incomplete multiple page print job - until paper runs out

I'm on Mac OS 10.9.3 printing to a Samsung CLX-6250FX. This is a network printer used by all the Apple/Window computers in this office.
I am having terrible problems recently with printing multiple page documents - excel, word, email, pdf etc. I am spending a fortune in paper and printer cartridges.
The print job does not complete and the last page printed, the following message prints:
    ERROR: syntaxerror
OFFENDING COMMAND: true        cvt      Tfpgm     nglyf      '   ^  head
    STACK:
    -mark-
    /sfnts
Then the same printer job restarts and fails at the same point until the printer tray runs out of paper (unless the print job is aborted and/or the printer is turned off and turned on again)!!
The specific error message displayed by the printer software is either "Remote host did not accept data file (32)" or "Remote host did not accept data file (105)".
I haven't seen any pattern whatsoever in terms of application used.
I have deleted the printer and reloaded the driver from the disk supplied with the printer. I have checked to see that I am running the most recent driver.
I've already reset the printing system, but that didn't fix it.
I have seen this problem on various support communities pages, but for different printers.
I have yet to see a solution - Any other recommendations please?

The error message you see printed is a Postscript error. With your printer, postscript (normal output type from applications) is converted to the printer's page description language before being sent to the printer. So, I believe the problem is in some part of the driver software.
For first step, I would try restarting from the Recovery partition and repair the hard drive using Disk Utility. You can repair permission, too. This is trying to correct a corrupted file.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
    (just read the first paragraph)
If that doesn't fix it, I would try downloading and installing the latest driver for the printer.
Come back for more if that still doesn't work.

  • How to print black using color ink

I am low on black ink at the moment but have a full color cartridge. I realise what I wish to do is more expensive than usual but right now I need to print quite a few documents in black but dont think I've enough black ink to do the job. I have an HPDeskjet 2050 3 in 1 printer/scanner and I cant find an option to select to use color to make black. If anyone knows how to do that on this printer please let me know otherwise "I got me some 'splainin to do" tomorrow at work.
    Thanks

    Printer: HP 6330 All-In-One
My color ink cartridge completely ran out of cyan (left only with yellow and magenta) and the black ink cartridge was completely emtpy.  In order to print an acceptable black and white doucument, I tried different settings until I found the right combination.  The output was a very dark purple.  The document took about four times as long to print due to the highest dpi setting, but the quality was very good in a pinch.
Keep in mind that the doucument was printed from Adobe; the source document was from MS Word.  So, some settings may not appear in other applications.  However, a similar approach may be applied to obtain the best result.
See the collection of screenshots for the printer settings.
    Hope this helps.

  • Keep getting the 'system has run out of application memory' window, what to do?

I'm running a mid 2010 MacBook with 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and OS X 10.9.5. Every time I'm on Safari I get the 'System has run out of application memory' window and it asks you to quit out of programs you're not using.  The problem is sometimes the only things running are Safari and Finder.  It'll then freeze up programs and prevent web pages from loading or showing up.  I'm not quite sure what this means or how to go about fixing it.  Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Meghan,
If you are seeing that alert that you are running out of application memory then I would take a look at using Activity Monitor to see how the memory is being used. If it looks normal usage to you, then you may want to upgrade the memory on your Mac. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • Why doe's my 8500A printer use color ink when printing black and also when unit is cleaning

I only print in black. I am required to buy all the colors because my printer will not operate when any cartridge is empty.
I was informed at Office Depot that all printers operate this way.  According to them it also uses ink when it goes through
    the cleaning cycle.
The XL ink package at Office Depot  (black, yellow, cyan, magenta) is $97.00 + tax.
I hope someone has a logical answer why this is set up this way.
Why do I need colors to print black?

The 8500A takes 4 ink cartridges and 2 printheads (one for black/yellow, and another for the other two colors). This design is so that you have have larger ink cartridges (stationary on the side, the printer only moves the printhead during printing). A drawback is, you have to have all the cartridges in, without the ink cartridges, the printheads could be damaged and would cost more to replace.
Printing black text uses black ink only, it does not use color ink. The "Clean printhead" function does print a color page and uses color ink, but you only need to do this when you notice lines missing (printhead clogged) in the printout.
If you print mostly black only, choose a model that uses cartridges that has a printhead built in. These printers typically can still print black with color ink out.

  • 6110 Will not print black only

    Hi,
I would have thought that by selecting printing with the black cartridge only, via the driver, that only black would be used in printing.
I am not 100% sure that this printer supports it but it may be possible to print with only the black cartridge installed. On printers where this is possible the unit works in single cartridge mode.
So to give it a try open the printer to access the cartridges and remove the colour cartridge.  Now close the printer again.  If the printer supports single cartridge operation you should get a message on your PC screen saying something like - Printing in reserve mode - Only the black cartridge is available for printing.
As I say, this may or may not be possible with your printer but if it works then it will definitely not be printing with colour because you have removed it.
The only other issue now is what to do with the colour cartridge when you remove it from the printer.  If it is just left out exposed to the air the ink in the nozzles will dry out and the nozzles will become blocked which will result in poor print quality when the colour cartridge is re-installed into the printer.  When the cartridges are in the printer and not printing they are held in a capping station that maintains the cartridges in good condition.  There is a little plastic item called a print cartridge protector which you should have if you have ever purchased a No. 58 cartridge for photo printing.  Normally the No. 56 print cartridge is stored in the print cartridge protector when the No. 58 cartridge is being used in the printer along with the No. 57 cartridge for printing photos.  If you have a print cartridge protector from previous No. 58 cartridge use then you could store the No. 57 cartridge in it while using the printer in black only mode.
    I hope that this helps

  • HP 3540 AIO Printer DOESN'T PRINT BLACK TEXT!

I unfortunately have an HP AIO Printer Deskjet 3540 Series.
Upon haggling wiht the abject customer tech support for an hour, he asks me to re-install the driver. After doing so, the black text JUST DOESN'T PRINT!
Is this some kind of joke! I am going to run out of colored ink in printng the **bleep** test pages.
It's an absolute rip-off. No wonder people buy cheap cartridges.

    Hi @GaurangDivecha
Although I would be happy to offer you some troubleshooting steps, I think it might be best to call HP.
You are welcome to take a look at the following document to ensure you have done all the necessary troubleshooting; Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP ENVY 4500 and Deskjet In...
If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
HP printers generally have a 1 year warranty from their purchase date, you can verify the warranty using the following link if you would like; warranty check.
Don't hesitate to call, although the printer may be out of warranty, the cartridges could be in warranty; therefore, there wouldn't likely be a fee for the phone support. HP will, at HP's option, either replace products under warranty that prove to be defective or refund the purchase price.
To find the “Warranty Ends” date, look in the following table for the date's location on each product. The date follows the YYYY/MM/DD or YYYY/MM format, where YYYY indicates the year, MM indicates the month, and DD indicates the day.
    I hope this helps.

Like the others, my Officejet 6500 710 quit printing in black "out of the blue".  Have done all of the diagnostics, both Windows and HP.  Tried repeatedly to download new driver, no luck.  Out of ideas.   Will appreciate advice.

    Hi @answerpls
I'd like to help you be able to print again. I understand your colored cartridges are working, but the blank ink is not.  Please begin with the steps in the following document; Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Officejet 6500A e-All-in...
If you complete all of the steps in the document above and the issue continues, my own personal recommendation, not one of HPs, is to use the solution offered in the following video.  I only suggest doing this if he printer and printhead are out of warranty.  Hot Water Printhead Flush - HP Ink Series Printers with removable Printhead.
I have recommended this solution to others and have seen success, but I can not guarantee this will resolve the issue, it is an end of the line kind of effort. I hope it helps.

Although the printer might be out of warranty, if the issue persists, HP may be able to offer you something. Hi , I see by your post that you are unable to print, copy or scan in black. I will certainly do my best to help you. I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
