Which PDF version to save/export to?

I'd been trying to research to find out what version Acrobat Reader version people are using.
For example in 2011, according from research from AVAST, the Adobe Reader User Base was:
Versions 3, 4, 5  = 3%
Version 6  = 2%
Version 7 = 6%
Version 8 = 14%
Version 9 = 35%
Version X = 40%.
I would like to find out current statistics. Does anyone have any insight?
Adobe Reader User Base?
Versions?

I don't know whether such information exists, but if you use PDF 1.6 you'll be likely to cover a large majority of all users.

    Since the last version of PDF is PDF 1.7, and this is openable by Acrobat 6 or Reader 6 or later, this isn't much of an issue any more. Setting security is more of an issue.
    Frankly, Adobe Reader statistics are no longer interesting, because more people now have non-Adobe Readers. You may not be aware how many. Anyone with
    * Chrome
    * FireFox
    * Macintosh
    * Windows 8
    * iPad, iPhone
    * Android
    has a PDF viewer already and may see little reason to get Adobe Reader. Sadly I have never seen a study of what these try to be compatible with.

  • Preserving PDF version after Save during "Extend Features in Reader"

    Hi,
    I'm using Acrobat Pro 9 and I'm attempting to make a fillable form that needs to be compatible with Acrobat 5 (PDF v1.4) . I can make the form, but when I extend features in reader, the copy it saves is PDF v1.6 (Acrobat 7). Is there any way to maintain the PDF version when doing this, or is this not possible with V1.4 PDFs?
    Thanks.

    "Reader enabling" was introduced with version 1.5 (Acrobat 6).
    Be well...

  • Which PDF-version on Content Server 4

    In what PDF-version must the PDF-files be saved, in order to work properly on ACS4?
    I have noticed that PDFs that are uploaded in version 1.6 (Actobat 7.x) does not show the first cover image, but a blank page instead, when downloaded (as a library loan for example).
    PDFs in versions below 1.6 show the cover image as they should.
    I have created the cover images from Photoshop CS3 and saved them as Photoshop PDF - then added to the PDF-file.
    On Content Server 3, all PDFs had to be saved in version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x) to work, but I hoped that would be different in ACS4.

  • Fill in PDF forms and save/export as *un-editable* PDF?

    Hi all,
    I have a client for whom I am creating an invoice template. I created the file in InDesign and have exported as a PDF.
    Working with Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.1.4 on Mac 10.6.8, I have managed to add text fields for my client to fill in with job-specific information. (Job number, item / descriptions / costs and so on).
    Is there a way that he/she can fill in job specifics, and then save or export the file so that when opened by their client, it appears as UN-editable?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    I answered this here: Can I fill in PDF forms and export / save as un-editable file?

  • How do I decide which PDF version for print?

    Hi
    I'm almost finished this project and have another issue with printing.  The colours aren't matching.  I've used 'Kuler' for all my CYMK colours and for whatever reason, I can't nail the colours in my test runs and the client isn't happy.  There are so many options when exporting to Acrobat and I'm thinking this may have something to do with this....dunno ;-)).
    Any ideas?

    There are a lot of small problems in your workflow which could add up to big problems on the output end.
    Calibrating via the OSX software calibrator is better than doing nothing, but it's not likely as good as a hardware calibrator because it's depending on your empirical judgements rather than a colorimeter reading.
    On the other end is the proof you are getting a contract proof? If you are using the default US Web SWOP CMYK profile does the proof match those printing conditions?
    The bigger problems are with Kuler. Neither the AIR app or the web app are color managed, so in its color picker there's no way to know how the conversion to the displayed CMYK numbers was made, or what CMYK device is targeted (US SWOP, US Sheetfed, Euroscale?). When you view the swatches in Kuler you are seeing them in your monitor RGB space. When you port the swatches into ID they come in as the listed CMYK values, which are displayed via your doc's CMYK profile, so you won't get a match and the preview will change depending on the profile.
    Also, the Kuler CMYK values have a huge amount of black in them—significantly more than you would get making the conversions in PS or ID with any of the default profiles.I think you would likely get better CMYK values by screen capturing the swatches in the Kuler app (OSX captures get tagged with your monitor profile), convert the capture to CMYK in PS using your destination CMYK profile, and use the resulting CMYK values in your ID doc.

  • Can you affect the exported pdf-version???

    Hi,
    you can influence the version of the created pdf doc witin the EXPORT OR EXPORTTODISK function?
    which Pdf version is produced by which CR version??
    Background:
    I have an ocx (which I cannot change), that shows only version 5.1 of PDF documents without any compatibility problem message.
    I now export a pdf with EXPORT OR EXPORTTODISK function in CR 2008 as Crystal created a document that my ocx can not display without further inquiry.
    Does anyone have an idea how I can work around the problem??
    THANK YOU!

    You can not change the pdf version what we export to.
    The engine exports to a specific version (I believe it is 2.1, but may be newer now) and there is no way to change it.

    Hi pissedadobeuser,
    Does this issue occur with any particular web page?
    Are you able to print the webpage to 'Adobe PDF' to convert it to pdf.
    Which Browser version, OS version and Acrobat version are you using?

  • Cannot embed pdfs in MS Word doc which are PDF Version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x) [This is associated with Adobe Reader 9]. Getting 'program not installed' error.

    Cannot embed pdfs in Word doc which are PDF Version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x) [This is associated with Adobe Reader 9]. Getting 'program not installed' error.
    Pdfs with other versions are okay:
    Tested successfully with Adobe Pro 9 (Version 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x)), Reader X (Version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x)) and XI (Version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x))
    Also cannot open embedded pdfs which have been embedded with this version (getting a similar error).
    Importantly I have removed/disabled all security options in Adobe Reader, following numerous internet suggestions from Adobe and elsewhere. This does not fix the problem.
    Currently the work around is to re-save the pdf with something other than Adobe Reader 9 (so the version updates), but we would prefer not to do this for all the old pdfs we have.
    Thank you,
    Louise.

    Could you please email me the document on which you are seeing this issue at [email protected] ?
    Please mention the forum thread link as well in the mail for the reference.
    Thanks,

  • Problem with Reader file when we try to save a pdf version of filled in file.

    We currently create fillable forms in Acrobat XI and enable them for fill-in with Acrobat Reader.  Our end users are able to key information and save it to the enabled pdf file with Reader, but they want to create a protected version of the form so nothing can be modified once they have approved it.  They have been creating "locked" pdf versions of the completed form using CutePdf software.  The PDF files they are creating open fine with Acrobat Pro XI or our free FoxIT reader, but when we try to open the files they created with CutePDF with Acrobat Reader, they are quite distorted.  According to users, this worked with older versions of Acrobat Reader.  Please let us know if you have any suggestions (other than switching from Acrobat Reader to the free FoxIT reader.
    Thanks for the help!!

    Can't endorse FoxIt or CutePDF, since I don't use either of them, and Adobe doesn't like us endorsing thrid party products in their forums anyway. On top of that I know several people who had really bad adware experiences with FoxIt, so I'd say stay away from it.
    Most likely neither of these software developers has updated THIER software to work with Acrobat/Reader XI and the problem lies with them, since PDF is an Adobe format and they must follow the lead from here, not vice-versa.

  • Acrobat 9 standard save without changing pdf version

    Hello,
    I have a question, is it possible to save an edited PDF file (the original is in an old format PDF 1.3/1.4) in the same format it was before editing?
    When I have edited the PDF with acrobat 9 standard it automatically changes the PDF version to 1.6.
    Thanks in advance

    There is no PDF Optimizer under advanced in acrobat 9 standard
    Saving in older file format is only a acrobat pro option?

  • Why does Preview save as PDF version 1.3 instead of version 1.7 sometimes?

    I've noticed something very strange in Mountain Lion when saving a downloaded PDF in Preview.  If I download a PDF to my downloads folder and open it in Preview and get info it says it's PDF version 1.7 and it's about 400 kb . If I then "save as" to my folder it saves it as PDF version 1.3 in a much smaller file save  82 kb.
    Why is this happening when I use "save as" rather than just dragging and dropping it from my downloads folder to another folder where it keeps it as version 1.7 and 400 kb ?
    Why would Preview save it as version 1.3 instead of the latest version of PDF - very odd?
    Thanks

    Etresoft - that doesn't seem right - are you sure that Mac's only option is to save a PDF v. 1.3 when there are PDFs that are already at v. 1.7?
    I was sure, but I was wrong. Upon closer inspection, the "%PDF-1.3" you see in the PDF isn't the whole story. The actual version can be specified elsewhere. It seems Mavericks actually generates PDF version 1.4. Of course, that's not much difference, is it?
    Generally, I think Apple is aiming for cross-platform support with the widest audience instead of all the advanced features that Adobe wants to throw in. Apple views PDF as legacy print technology. If you need more than what Apple provides, you can always buy Acrobat.
    Here is an old marketing flyer from Adobe showing how much more you would get with Acrobat. It is from the Tiger era but you can see there is a whole lot that isn't implemented. But if you bought Acrobat, you would be in the position Apple doesn't want. You would create and send people PDF 1.7 files and they wouldn't be able to read them. What do you do? Tell them to buy Acrobat? It is a common theme here in Apple Support Communities whenever a new OS version arrives. People everywhere suddenly can't print, read PDFs, or do just about anything PDF related. That is because they had previously download Acrobat and it breaks with each OS update.

    Hello nmohamm,
    To examine the conversion settings in Acrobat, do the following:
    1. Select Edit > Preferences
    2. In the preferences dialog, select the "Convert From PDF" category.
    3. In the "Converting From PDF" list, select "Excel workbook".
    4. Click the "Edit Settings" button to view your conversion settings.
