Which performs better, the Retina or the regular pro?

I am debating which Pro to purchase, if I were to choose between the Air or a Pro. So far, I am going with the air, but I would first like to know the differences between the Retina and the regular Pro. I am going to use the laptop for school work, music, movies, and gaming ( Minecraft, GTA). I would like to know which Pro will do those tasks the fastest, without crashing or lagging, and the clearest. I am planning to buy a 13' with 256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM, and a Dual-Core Intel i7 Processor.

Unless you plan on doing much video and photo editing or gaming the Air is the hands down choice for school use.
The newly released macbook Retina (entry level ones), in easy examination is a thicker macbook Air, thats a bit faster with a retina display.
I have 2 Pros (older) and the current Air. The Air is very nice for its very lightweight packing around,......
,...however now the new Retina pro and the Air are very close together,........both 802ac wifi
both have PCIe SSD
both have Mavericks and Haswell
as said, bit more speed and Retina display.
The 13" Air in I5 however has the longest battery life by far, with reports in the 13 and 14 hour range.

• Tech Specs of the audio input jack? (which is better, an iMic, or the MBP?)

Well because the iMic has such a cheap sounding/terrible audio output....
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132385&tstart=0
....I am trying to figure out which would be better for the audio INPUT?
I am surprised to see that both the iMic and the combined jack on the 13" MacBook Pro seem to record in stereo, but technical wise, which is better? I DO know that the iMic is better for non-amped mics, that the iMic will pre-amp the signal where as the MBP will only accept line-in signals. So other then that, which is better?
Thanks,
Scott

Well, I sent back the iCrap...I mean iMic. I had to take a loss of $10 but oh well. (stupid apple return policy.)
Anyways, my solution was to buy a similar adapter off ebay for only $7. This USB interface is not a brand name one, it is one of those "china knock-off's" but it works. The Audio output it a lot louder but still slightly distorts like the iMic. However, the audio input works just fine. So my solution is to use BOTH the external USB interface, and the jack on the MBP at the same time. That will give me the best of both worlds. AND, it only cost $7 and came in 3 days, vs the adapter I bought from apple that coast over $35 and took a MONTH to ship.

Hi elementsk8er506;
You posted your MacBook Pro question in the Mac Pro forum. I suggest you repost over in the MBP forum where there are more users knowledgeable on it.

• Which is better to get now, the iPhone 4 or 4S?

My faithful Samsung has died on me (not a smartphone) and I was thinking of getting an iPhone, but not the 5 because that's out of my price range. I was thinking between the 4 and the 4s, the 4S is obviously more expensive than the 4 so I was wondering if it was worth getting the 4s, if it's not much different from the 4?
Thanks

The iPhone 4 will do everything you need it to and would be a good choice, especially if money is a big factor. I have an iPhone 4 and do not plan on upgrading to a new iPhone for awhile because mine works so well.
Here are the differences:

• Macbook Air or MBP Which performs better

I'm considering the 13" MBP 2.9Ghz with 8GB 700GB HD vs the 13 in Air 2.0GHz (256GB). Besides the boot time being faster on the Air vs. the MBP is there other benchmarks available to compare these two models? I saw 15 retina and air benchmarks but nothing comparing what performs better the air or 13 mbp. Thanks.

Most testing benchmarks don't adequately indicate the "real world" experience in regard to these two disparate setups. When the MBP is tasked to intensely execute a series of processor intensive tasks, such as video encoding or image manipulation, the MBP will "finish the race" much faster. The MBP has quad core, discrete graphics, and will be faster. It takes a measure of subjective "experience" testing to discern their real world differences, which will vary amongst users.
The SSD in the Air will make the unit "seem" much more peppy than a HDD equipped MBP. When loading multiple files into memory, the SSD really shines. It makes apps launch faster, the boot faster, and the saving of files faster. Since most users are not repetitively performing tasks that require the raw processing power of the Pro model, many will just find the Air plain faster for them.
Im sure arstechnica.com and anandtech.com will be doing straight-up comparisons really soon, as they have done on previous iterations of the Air and Pro. They both are very adept at discerning the usable differences beween both these lines.
Of course, if you equip your Pro with an SSD, it will beat the Air in every way, except portability.

• Which performs better for windows development, bootcamp or parallels?

I have an imac at home and am using parallels to host a w7 vm, wherein I do some web and db development. It is quite sluggish at times. I think i may need to tweak the config to perhaps allocate more ram to it but i'm not sure. I just picked up a macbook pro gen2 i7 and before I install a w7 vm or parttition i was wondering which is better, parallels or bootcamp? I do like the interactivity that parallels gives me with respect to files between the w7 vm and lion, but am wondering it that is perhaps the achilles heal when it comes to performance.
what's the preferred route by other developers out there?
Thanks!

that's what i thought. thanks for confirming. it sounds like i might be able to use parallels ALSO later on to access the windows bootcamp partition, based on reading another thread.

• AMD vs Core I7 - which performs better for Adobe Products?

I'm currently running an AMD System (Phenom 2 x4 3.2Ghz, 8GB DDR3 PC10666, ATI 3870 512MB, Windows Ultimate 64bit, WD 120GB 10k RPM)
and I'm wondering if it's worth purchasing and building a new, intel Core i7-920 system. I know the higher end, 970 would be better, but I don't feel like dropping $1k on a processor - so 920 is what I'm looking at.
I would like to know (from users who have used, or are familiar with both platforms) which system performs better with the Adobe production suite and if it's worth the investment to switch from AMD to Intel. Does Hyper Threading affect the way AE / Premiere render? Will I notice a difference in speed from 8GB to 12/24GB for memory (for AE / Pr)?
I would also like any suggestions on graphics cards (FireGL vs Quadro or GTX vs Radeon) to boost performance. I'm not much of a gamer and I would like to concentrate more of power on production. Right now I'm using a gaming card (an older one at that) and I would like to know if buying a newer one will boost performance for AE / Pr.
Any help, tips, or suggestions would be great!
Thanks,
Drew

I would recommend Intel processors over AMD for Adobe products.
Does Hyper Threading affect the way AE / Premiere render?
I can't talk for Premiere. For AE, it's perhaps marginal compared to the number of physical cores. And could be in some cases counter-productive if it tricks AE's multiprocessing system into believing there are twice as many cores, because of the way AE assigns RAM to the rendering instances it launches for each core (when "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously" is enabled in Preferences).
Will I notice a difference in speed from 8GB to 12/24GB for memory (for AE / Pr)?
Yes, 8 GB is actually the absolute minimum you want for a quad core system (2 GB per core).
After that, it depends on the content. For HD sized Comps, large source files and/or 32 bpc processing, having more RAM would lead to better performance and reliability.
I would also like any suggestions on graphics cards (FireGL vs Quadro
or GTX vs Radeon) to boost performance. I'm not much of a gamer and I
would like to concentrate more of power on production.
In AE, OpenGL previews are meant to provide a smoother/more responsive experience when interacting with the application. It won't help with render times in most cases. A medium to high end consumer level card should be fine. No need to sell the house for one of the pro level models. Keep an eye to the list of officially supported card/driver combinations.

• Which is better for 3 displays, the 5870 or the 7950?

I have a Radeon 5770 in a 2010 3.33 6 core. I have a 30" Samsung 305T running at 2560x1600 (DL DVI) and a 1080p HDMI monitor running off a MDP->HDMI adaptor. Even this seems tenuous as occasionally one or both monitors need some cajoling to fire up. Some research on this is giving me the idea that this could be either a power draw issue or a VRAM issue on the 5770, and while it may have 3 ports, in practical terms it's probably hard to get them all to work because of the card's other limitations. I know some people have better results using powered adaptors.
I also have been using a DisplayLink USB adaptor to get a 3rd monitor (17" DVI) going but this requires a considerable amount of the Mac CPU.
I'm looking into either a 5870 or a 7950 upgrade to make the monitor situation I do have more reliable, less drain on the CPU, and to be able to hook my 3rd (or possibly even 4th) monitor without resorting to DisplayLink.
I RARELY do gaming, so high frame rates are not my criteria. I'm an audio professional and run Logic Pro on all my screens. What I want is reliability, a quiet fan, and no-hassles with multiple monitors at high resolutions.
Any suggestions as to which card is best for my purposes? Thanks.

You do not need a new graphics card, you need to understand what AMD is doing with Mini DisplayPort.
The levels on Mini Displayport are much lower than older protocols. Mini DisplayPort can be requested to produce backward compatible protocols, but there is not enough POWER to run two at the required levels. It needs ACTIVE adapters (with signal boosters) to convert more than one. Third party Mini Displayport to Single-Link DVI costs about US$35.
What are the basic requirements for connecting multiple displays?
Connecting multiple monitors for AMD Eyefinity technology couldn’t be simpler. There are four easy rules to remember:
The first two monitors can connect to the graphics card with any display output on your product: HDMI, VGA, DVI or DisplayPort.
The third (or greater) display must be connected to the graphics card via DisplayPort.
If your monitor does not have a DisplayPort connection, you will need an inexpensive active DisplayPort adapter for it. DVI to DP adapters can be had for less than $30 USD.2
Every family of GPUs supports a different maximum number of displays.

• How long is the Retina 15" MBP supposed to last?

Being that the Retina MBP is built completly different than the latter made 13&15" MBP's, is this one going to or due to last as long as the latter models? One of the main reasons I bought my wife this late 2011 13" MBP was because Apple's MBP's last. I was waiting on the new MBP's to come out with the Retina Dispay. Also, from talks with numerous friends that I work with, they have had their MBP's for at leat 3 years and some even longer with little to no failures at all. I was really hoping that gaining the Retina Display wouldn't result in loosing features/capabilites. Any input will be appreciated, thanks.
Bjorn

I have never seen Apple publsh any projections on the physical life expetancy of a product. I would agree they just seem to go and go and go. Would not expect anything different of the new Retina MBP.
The Airs that are ll soldered technology like the Retina work great even ater a few years of existence.
Only caveate, order/buy the Retina with the memory, etc., you want at the beginning as they cannot be upgraded after the fact.

• In session and call tansaction methods, which is better . why?

hi
in session and call tansaction methods, which is better . why?

see the link:
batch inpunt VS call transaction
"The most important aspects of the session interface are:
Asynchronous processing
Transfer data for multiple transactions
Synchronous database update. During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
A batch input processing log is generated for each session
Sessions cannot be generated in parallel. The batch input program must not open a session until it has closed the preceding session.
The most important features of CALL TRANSACTION USING are:
Synchronous processing
Transfer of data from an individual transaction each time the statement CALL TRANSACTION USING is called
You can update the database both synchronously and asynchronously. The program specifies the update type.
Separate LUW (Logical Units of Work) for the transaction. The system executes a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
No batch input processing log"
I hope I have been able to help you.
cordial greetings.

• Comparing the iphone to the iphone4.

Looking to buy one, but questioning which is better? Even though the 4 is more new, is it worth it? Because they're both going to have problems...

There are 4 iphone generations. Which two are you comparing? Iphone 4 and 3gs? Iphone 4 and iphone 3g? Iphone 4 and Original iphone?
They do not all have the same features or run the same software.
Why are they both going to have problems?
I have had the original iphone - never had a problem - replace with the iphone 3gs after two years. My wife used it for another year without issue.
I got an iphone 4 last year without issue. My wife has the 3gs without issue for almost 2 years now.
Most never have any problems.
The iphone has been top of the customer satisfaction rankings for 5 years running.

Regards,
ChandaThe two statements aren't equivalent. If you know that your where condition is restricting to a single row then there is no point in doing a count as that will introduce an additional aggregate function that isn't required for a single row. If you are dealing with multiple rows from the where condition then the second query will return multiple rows whereas the first query returns 1 row, so they don't do the same thing anyway.
