Which platform to install Solaris 8 on?

Hi all!
What would be the best Intel hardware choice for installing Solaris on for a brand new company ... no legacy hardware or software.
Sparc solutions seem to pricey to consider at this time, so we're sticking to Intel.
Dell has some nice rack mountable servers that we're considering... Anyone know of problems with installing solaris on these?
Thanks!

Make sure that the hardware is compatible with Solaris 8... Check the compatibility list before you purchase any hardware for your company... If you want SPARC's you could probably use the generics like Tatung or the likes which are cheaper that SUN's boxes... OF course the best thing to look for is the support... Sun has been great with their support.

If anybody knows let me know at my e-mail [email protected]

I don't think you will have many problems in this platform, but I'm not 100% sure.
What I recommend you is to get the VMWare and try there. VMWare is a software where you can create a virtual machine running under windows. In this virtual machine you could install solaris 10 (and any other OS you want to test in your computer). I have my Solaris 10 running under VMWare with excellent results (Laptop with Intel Celeron processor)... where I have VMWare installed in Windows!

  • Installing Solaris 9 on an x86 platform with win98 and win2K

    Hi,
There is a Pentium P4 (2.4 GHz) machine with a 40 GB hard disk...
This has 1 primary partition and the remaining is the extended dos partition. In effect there are the following logical drives - C, D, E and F. These are FAT32 partitions and have WIN98 and WIN2K (server) installed on them.
There is a free space of abt 8 GB remaining on which i am trying to install Solaris 9 (via CD). But am just not able to do so.
During the process, i get to the step saying that my disk is to be partitioned and that i could either choose the DEFAULT LAYOUT or manually partition the disk with the fdisk.
Default layout indicates that there would be 1 x86 partition (primary, boot) and the remaining would be a solaris partition - implying that all my other data would get formatted out!!!
When i try to use the fdisk to manually partition the disk, the free space mntd above does not show up!!!
But this is seen when i use the DOS fdisk - i.e. i could create a logical drive on the extended dos partition...
Can some one please help me install the Solaris in the free space i have ?? Thanks.

    Hello!
There is one simple method also..
Instead of Installation disk of Solaris, insert the Software 1/2 Disk, and try to follow the actuall Suninstall method of installing Solaris. Here you will get the option that how to utilize the free space.
I myself have installed more 5 OS on a single Hard disk :) this way. Try this method

  • I need a sql statment that return the platform on which oracle is installed

    hi all
in Oracle 10g there is a column in v$database names platform_name that contain the platform name on which oracle is installed.
do you know how can I check it in oracle 9i/9i ?

    And just to note:
Sandeep's solution only works if your user has access to the V$DATABASE view which most standard users won't.
Kamal's solution will work with most users providing they haven't had permission taken away from them in regards the dbms_utility package.

  • Help Installing Solaris 10 on Sony vaio laptop which shipped with Vista

    Hello All,
I am very new to solaris. As part of first step of learning i am trying to install solaris on my laptop, as it already downgraded from Vista to XP. Now my laptop is loaded with XP i am planning to install solaris as a dual boot.
Can anybody guide me or suggest me how to walk through the installation process.
I have encountered an issue while trying to install installing ( it is unable to detect the harddisk of my laptop, i am unable to find out the root cause i have two options in mind, 1) there is no unpartitioned space left for solaris to install & the 2) is SATA disabling.
    Help is highly appretiated.
    Thanks,
    Naveen.

    From my (admittedly limited) experience:
    1) It's not a matter of merely no unpartitioned space; the installer would still see the drive.
    2) SATA is not a showstopper. I installed on a 500 GB SATA drive on an HP XW4400 workstation that has an Intel 82801G SATA controller. However, when I first tried to install, I got to the list of target drives and the list was blank as if I had no drives. I went into the bios setting of the workstation and changed 'SATA emulation' from "AHCI" to "IDE" and then Solaris installed just fine.

  • How to install solaris when having no physical access to the machine

    Hi,
I administer a Dell PowerEdge 2950 server with Windows Server 2003. The machine is in a rack located in a datacenter which I do not have any physical access to.
As most of server's systems are working on the Java platform, I'm interested in migrating to Solaris 10, however, it is not clear for me how can I do that.
I have full access to several machines in the office where I work and they have varied OSes (windows, mac, solaris). It seems to me that those machines are in a different subnet than the server (subnet masks are not the same). Also their Ip addresses are given dinamically (DHCP) whist the server's address is fixed (static). Currently, I can use any of these machines to open a remote desktop session to the Dell server.
Can I install solaris on that server taking into account the facts mentioned above? If so, how? using a network-based installation?
As the driver for the RAID controller is not bundled with the installation media, would it be still possible to apply the driver before beginning the installation (option 5. Apply driver updates)?
Hope you can suggest me something or shed some light on this.
    Thank you

if you have 2 servers next to each other at datacentre, get somebody there to drop a install dvd into server you want to install it
next wire serial cable from 1 server to the other soon to be solaris server
and that's as good as it gets

  • Error while installing Solaris 10 using Solaris CD

I'm getting an error while installing Solaris 10 in an Ultra 10 box.
I have Solaris CDs (Total 4) and I have installed Solaris 10 in a Ultra 250 box , I did not get any problem. That means CDs are fine.
But when I try to boot the CD 1 from bootPROM mode by giving the following command
    ok boot cdrom
I get the following error :
rebooting with CD command boot cdrom
    boot device : /pci@1f, 0/pci@1 , 1/idi@3/cdrom@2 ,0:f file and args
    Cant read disk label
    Cant open disk label package
    evaluating : boot cdrom
    Cant open boot device
Then the box boots up with Solaris 8 which it has now..
Can anyone please help me to solve this issue ?
    Thanks

With the above information , I just wanted to tell you that the CD rom is getting detected as i can view all files in the CD.,,

  • Step by Step Guide to Install Solaris 10 11/06 With Windows XP on x86 PC

    hi everyone
here is how I fixed my dual boot & internet connectivity failure problems. I'm explaining in detail to help any Solaris newbie (like me) having same problems: ( as I didn't find any REAL Help thru Sun Help Documents / Pages )
My special thanx to " Phil Brown " ( who helped me alott on this )
First to get rid of Dell's Diagnostic Partition & System Recovery Partition I re-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition & at installation I made 4 Partitions of my Dell 9150 ( x86 Intel Pentium Dual Core ) 238 GB Hard Drive.
    (1) C: 100 GB for Windows XP ( NTFS )
    (2) D: 80 GB for Solaris 10 ( RAW )
    (3) E: 50 GB for Linux ( RAW , which I haven't installed yet )
    (4) F: 6 GB (RAW)
    (5) G: 2 GB Un-Allocated Space
Restarted PC after Win XP installation & installed Partition Magic 8 . In PM8 I formatted Solaris partition as FAT 32 (at Solaris installation it changed to Solaris format) & Linux as Linux EXT 3 . Rebooted the PC. I Started Solaris 10 11/06 installation from the DVD I burned from Sun downloads.
    Here's how I installed Solaris 10 11/06 :
    (1) On the next screen after "Loading Stage 2 ... " I selected " Solaris "
    (2) Selected " Solaris Interactive (default) installation
    (3) Hit "enter" to accept proposed Windows configuration screen it displayed
    (4) Selected 0 = English as language (you need to take cursor into white window so you can type 0 into it, otherwise u can't)
    (5) hit NEXT
    (6) Selected "Networked" option
    (7) Selected YES to "Use DHCP for e1000g0 ( Intel Pro/1000 Network Adapter )
    (8) Selected NO to "enable IPv6"
    (9) Selected NO to "enable Kerberos"
    (10) Selected DNS as "Name Service"
    (11) entered " f.root-servers.net " as Domain Name
    (12) Server's IP address : 192.5.5.241 ( you can choose the one that closest to you by visiting http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/ops/f-root/ )
    (13) Search Domain: Left all boxes empty ('coz when I tried to put any IP's into 'em, it generated " SysidgenSyserr " and have to re-start installation )
    (14) Geographic Continent / Country / Region: Americas > U. S. > time zone
    (15) hit NEXT on Date & Time Screen
    (16) Entered password twice
    (17) Selected YES to "enable Remote Services"
    (18) hit CONFIRM
    (19) Clicked NEXT on Solaris installation Welcome screen
    (20) Selected NO to " Reboot Automatically " and YES to eject additional CD/DVDs
    (21) Clicked OK on NOTICE
    (22) Specified CD/DVD as " Media from which you installing Solaris "
    (23) Check ACCEPT & hit next
    (24) Selected "initial install" & hit next
    (25) I choose "Custom Install" > NEXT > North America > and checked both, " English ( U S ) ( en_us) & English ( U S, UTF-8) (en_us.UTF-8) and hit next
    (26) Selected English (US, UTF-8) as initial locale > NEXT
    (27) Selected " Solaris 10 Extra Value Software " > NEXT
    (28) Selected NONE to " Web Start Ready Product Scan Location " > NEXT
    (29) Selected " Entire Group - Default Packages " in Solaris software group screen > NEXT
    (30) Selected " c1do(bootdisk) " > NEXT
    (31) " c1d0 " Selected > NEXT
    (32) There was a Warning: " A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a linux fdisk partition on the same disk as a Solaris fdisk partiton is not supported. Do you want to load the default Lay out ? I choose NO
    (33) It displayed 4 partitions. 1st: " Unknown " 100GB , 2nd: FAT32LBA, this I changed to Solaris by clicking on partition, size 80GB . 3rd: Linux 50GB , 4th: DOSEXTLBA 8GB , hit NEXT
    (34) I choose NO to " Preserve Data Warning " (the 80GB partition)
    (35) Displayed " Lay Out File Systems " screen, c1d0 was highlighted. > NEXT
    (36) On " Ready to Install Screen " it displayed Fdisk partitions: 1st: Unknown "Preserved" , 2nd: FAT32LBA delete, & Solaris add, 3rd: Linux "Preserved" , 4th: DOSEXTLBA "Preserved" >>> hit " Install Now "
    (37) When installation finishes hit " Reboot " & when PC was restarting I ejected DVD manually
    (38) After re-start it displayed 3 options: 1st: Solaris 10 , 2nd: Solaris failsafe , 3rd: Windows , ENTER on Solaris 10
    (39) At sign-in screen, I signed in as, user name: " root " & enterd password (which I typed at installation)
    (40) I choose JAVA Desktop System
When it was fully up, the Internet was working right away. Restarted again to check Windows. Selected " Windows " at reboot screen & Windows was working just fine.
It took me few allnighters to figure these out, I hope these will helpful to Solaris newbies like me. Still I can't figure out ... How to install any software (obviously designed for Solaris 10 (x86) ) onto Solaris, but thats a different issue.
    - Jags Desai

"A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a Linux fdisk partition is not supported"
It might not be supported, but it works fine for me on my thinkpad :-) .
    redhat/solaris/xp.
You can't just use the linux grub, though, because it won't understand
solaris 'slices within partitions'. You need to get Solaris to install
grub itself (in fact, you can't stop it doing so, which is rather unfair),
and then add in the linux * xp entries to Solaris's /boot/grub/menu.lst
(== grub.conf) to get it to pick up fedora & xp. Chainloading xp worked
fine for me. Chainloading RHEL4/5 doesn't, so I had to cat the grub.conf
from red hat on to the end of solaris's menu.lst. Stick red hat's grub.conf
on a USB pen or just write it down before putting Solaris on, otherwise you'll
have to boot linux rescue of a red hat CD in order to get hold of it after
    Solaris's grub takes over.

  • Can I install solaris on a second hard drive?

I am completely new to Solaris. My computer runs Windows XP as its primary OS and I have a second (slave) hard drive that I would like to install Solaris 10 on. Does the installation DVD for x64 architecture automatically handle this kind of installation? Is this process possible? If it is, will I have to manually configure the BIOS to boot each OS every time I change my current OS, or will some sort of GUI dialogue come up? I would like information on this subject and if possible, step-by-step instructions.

Tottaly agree with the last post. Check if your hardware is in HCL, there is a free program you can download from Sun Download page, you burn it to CD and reboot, then it will provide you with all needed information. And if something is not in the list, you will get a hard time seting it up (there are a lot of unofficial drivers). So as an example: networkcard will be hard to install and set up. So check first.
As from my experiense conserning instalation, I would suggest to do so:
(in a way as the last post)
prepare a clean partition, or backup files on a HD. run the instalation, once you will reach the point when it will ask you how to install (Normal or Custom) choose custom, then it will go to several questions concerning where on a HD to install, thats where you can choose partitions and so on.
Just as a reminder: you dont need alot of space for Solaris to work properly, plus there not so much software which requires big amount of HD. So for OS and nice package for development you will probably need tops 10Gb.

You can go to doc.sun.com for all Solaris documentation. This should be the link you need, which is for the latest version of Solaris 10 (10/09).
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/1236.11?l=en
If you need an older version, you can find them all here:

  • Installing solaris from the hard disk

i am new to solaris. i just wanna know is there a way of installing solaris from the hard drive

If you are new to Solaris I would advise you to stick to CD installations. Atleast in the beginning.
Having advised that, it is known that installing from cd can be a bit tricky is getting the install going.
Don't be supprised if your first attempt fails with disk-read errors. Try again.
More specific in relation to your question:
Solaris has many ways in which you can install the os, and from hardisk over the network to the machine to be installed is one of these possibities.
If you where thinking about doing the install from one partition to an other partition of the harddisk, that I am afraid I have to dissapoint you.
NB: for every version of Solaris there are several Installation documents on the web: docs.sun.com
