Which playlist?

Hi there
I'm a bit of an iTunes novice but I've managed to screw things up a bit somehow. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I've got a shed load of songs in my music library, but they're not all allocated to playlists. I obviously want them to be in playlists. Is there any way I can find out which songs in the library are not assigned to playlists? If not, I'm going to have to manually go through hundreds of songs putting them in to playlists one by one I guess. I'm guessing that if songs are not in playlists, they won't play on my iPod right? Sorry for being such a halfwit.
CB

Songs do not have to be in a playlist to play on your ipod if you are autosyncing to your lirbary which is the default.
You can set your iPod to sync on one or more playlists and if you ahve done that tracks not in those playlists will not transfer.
If you want to find out which tracks are not in any playlist, try the following:
Make a playlist folder (from File menu) and drag all playlists into it. Maybe call the folder PLFolder
Make a new smart playlist not in the folder you just made.
Rule:
Playlist is not PLfolder.
Limit to unchecked
Live updating checked.
This playlist should have all the tracks not in any playlist.
You can drag the other playlists out of PLFolder when you are done.

  • How to copy attributes (as in which playlists) from one song to another

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to copy the characteristics of a song--as in which playlists it appears in--from one song to another, so that the new song then appears on all those same playlists also? Or, if not, maybe you have some other idea for me:
I'm working with a Mac. I have several hundred playlists with ~100 songs each, and about 3,500 songs in my iTunes. Most of these songs are currently AACs. I've realized I have a problem: If I want to burn disks with MP3-format songs, I will need to convert the AAC to MP3s to burn them. If I don't want to have thousands of duplicate songs, I will need to trash the AAC versions of those songs from my library. If I do that, they will disappear from the playlists they are currently in (one song might be in 20 different lists). If I had to manually take each MP3 version created, look at which playlists the original AAC version is in, drag the MP3 version to each playlist, and delete the AAC version, it would take a Looooong time. Does anyone know of any shortcuts? For example, is there some way to copy the information about which playlists a given song is in and then paste that info onto the new version so it now appears also in these playlists? Or some other idea? Thanks very much!

Never heard of any way of doing that. However, you may want to check out Doug's Scripts. There might be something there to help.

  • Show in which playlist tracks are

I have a request for a functionality in Itunes.
In the main directory of the ipod, you can see a lot of information like artist, title, album etc. but not in which playlist a song is. And that is something I really would like to see. I now have some music on my ipod that is not in a playlist anymore (the playlist got deleted somehow, the music remains on the ipod). Now i want to put this music back in the playlist, but I don´t know which music is already in a playlist and which is not. Just another option besides the name, artict, album, genre, time, options would be great to fix this for me.
Is there someone who knows if this is already possible? and how i can do this?

Well your talkin about to different things, ipod and itunes.
If the ipod is set to "Auto Update" then you use the feature in iTunes to do it like described above.
If the ipod is on "Manual update" then you highlight the ipod and then do it in itunes.
It would be hard to add a feature where it listed every single playlist a song was in, it would make the list WAY too long if you had the song in alot of playlist. They do offer smart playlist where you set rules a song must match to be on it.
All you have to do is look at the playlist in question and see if the song is missing or not

  • How to identify which playlists a song is in?

As I organize my songs into playlists, I sometimes find I hadn't put a song into a playlist when I thought I had. Is there any way to show which playlists a song belongs to?

Right click on the song, and hit Show in Playlist.

  • How to choose which playlists goes onto ipod

I want to put songs onto my ipod but not my "music" playlist, I have a playlist that I want put onto my ipod but just not all my music, does anyone know how I can choose which playlist gets put onto my ipod? Thanks

    Welcome to AD!
It's simple, but you have to have "manually managed music" unchecked in the ipod summary tab.
Once that is unchecked, you can go to teh iPod's music tab and check the option to "Only sync these playslists".

  • Is there a way I can see which playlists a song is in, when using iTunes?

Is there a way to quickly view which playlists a tune is in?

Right-click (or control-click) on a track and go to the "Show In Playlist" command.

  • Which playlists are on my iPod?

Without my iPod plugged in to my computer, is there anyway to tell which playlists are set to sync with it?
I know, for example, that things like iPod serial numbers are stored in the com.apple.iPod.plist file. Is there a similar storage location for the playlists that will sync with an iPod?
Or is the information stored in the iTunes Library files?
    Matt

Or is the information stored in the iTunes Library files?
My guess is, that information is stored in the 'iTunes Library' file only.
Recently, out of curiosity how and what information is stored, I browsed through iTunes' .plist files and the 'iTunes Library.xml' file.
I didn't find any reference to the playlists on my iPod.
It seems logical to me that information is not stored in the .xml file (why should e.g. iPhoto 'want to know' which playlists are on the iPod).
Unfortunately?, the 'iTunes Library' file is not 'human readable' by any application I have, so I can't tell for sure.

  • Will iCloud sync which playlists I put purchased songs in?

If I purchase a song in iTunes on my computer, then put it in a playlist (not a smart playlist), will iCloud sync that into the same playlist on another device?

No (do correct me if I'm wrong). iCloud only allows you download your past purchases or automatically download recent purchases on your associated devices.

  • Can I select which playlists appear on an iOS device

I Have signed up for iTunes Match. I have several iOS devices - phone, iPad, iPod Touch.
It seems like if I turn on iTunes Match EVERY playlist I have made appears on EVERY device. If I remove a playlist in one place it disappears everywhere.
I don't want this! I want different playlists on each device. Is there any way to do this other than turning iTunes Match off and syncing from my Mac?

    thanks Jim.
IF I'd understood better how iTunes Match works I would have saved myself the money.  Doesn't handle playlists that reference other playlists and populates every playlist to every device.
i shall turn iiTunes Match off on iOS devices and rebuild all the old playlists I have deleted in order to complete the match process. I'll then be left with a copy of my library in the cloud. I can't think of any benefit to this - I back everything up on a Time Capsule already.

  • I no longer can select which playlists to sync

Using iMatch, I no longer have the option to sync only certain playlists. I get them all on my iPhone 4s. Is there a way to reset this?

Turn off iTunes Match on the iPhone.
With iTM enabled on an iOS device traditionally syncing via USB is disabled. All music management takes place on the device.

  • How do i choose  which playlist(s) i want on my new ipod

hey i used to be able to know how to do this but that i got a new ipod and updated to itunes 7 im confused. Its updaating my ipod with the whole library, but i just wanted the one playlist. Thanks for any help.

When you select the playlist and hit "Apply", iTunes deletes all the existing playlists on the iPod and then only adds the new selected playlist. Is there a way to add the new playlist WITHOUT deleting the existing playlists on the iPod?

  • Error message: "playlists selected for updating no longer exist"

I tried to update my ipod nano and I guess I had deleted a playlist, but since then, I have not been able to update. Every time I try, I get the following message:
"Cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist."
I haven't been able to highlight which playlists are selected to begin with.
I read through the manual and thought that maybe rebooting the whole system might work. So I deleted Itunes from my computer and re-installed.
Then I tried re-setting my ipod. So now I have nothing on my ipod.
I also deleted everything from my library, thinking it might help to start from scratch. Nothing has worked.
How do I "select" and "unselect" playlists so I can get up and running again?

    Here you go.

  • IPod Pref Pane in iTune 7.0.1 Does Not Work - Do I have too many playlists?

I'd love to be able to submit a screen shot of this. When I connect my iPod (4G, 3G and Nano), the iPod Preference Pane pops up. I have 50,000 songs in my iTunes library and about 3,000 playlists so I always use the "selected playlists" option. What happens, though, when I click the Music tab is that the new screnn only partially paints and none of the select or radio buttons work. If I then select a different tab, the text for it is painted on top of the previous tab.
Bottom line is that I can't change which playlists are going to be updated on my iPod. I've sent a note to Apple about this but, so far, no response.

My PC worked great with iTunes 6, does that require Terminal Services?
hmmmm. i only know of this as being an issue with the iTunes 7.0.x versions. (my guess here is that some of the new functionality that comes with 7.0.x requires Terminal Services ... but i have no idea what functions in particular those would be.)
i guess it's plausible that if you've got some disk damage around the dll, that might interfere with the attempts to replace or reregister it.
if you run a chkdsk over your C: does that find/repair any damage? if so, do you get Terminal Services showing up?

  • I deleted my playlist off my iPhone (on my phone not on iTunes) and it deleted the playlists from my iTunes and I NEED them back...how?

It seems TOO MANY people are having this same problem.  Honestly, Apple is just dirt now...more problems than now.  I need help asap.
I went onto iTunes and clicked on my phone's name in the upper right corner.  I have my music set on 'selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres' which this usually means, I just click below to which playlists I want on my phone.  However, none of my playlists were updating (none of the new songs I added to my playlists already on my phone were transfering) so I went on my phone and simply deleted the playlists there, then was planning on re-syncing them on my phone from iTunes on my computer.  BUT when I went onto my iTunes, somehow ALL my playlists were deleted EVEN THOUGH I ONLY DELETED THEM OFF MY PHONE NOT MY COMPUTER!  THESE PLAYLISTS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND I NEED THEM BACK NOW!  I tried using the backup, which was done before the playlists were deleted, but of course Apple, it did not work.  Great job, there.  I just want these playlists back, both on my computer and on my phone.  I have plenty of space free to hold these playlists/songs.
Apples exceptional failure of everything iPhone and iTunes related is too maturfully pathetic I don't know if I have the patience or time to deal with this company anymore, even though I have been along for the ride since the first iPhone came out.  Congratulations, Steve Jobs would be so happy with how far Apple's sunk.
    Problems:
    Video's not synching
    Playlists not updating
Playlists deleting from iTunes when simply deleted from iPhone
New songs not transfering to iPhone
My battery jumping from 30% to 5% in less than a minute
My phone completely shutting down at 30% and not turning back on, saying it needs to be charged
When above happens, and I plug it in, after it turns back on, it pumps straight to 30% battery again
Lock screen not always locking, even though it is set to 1 minute

I'm not ranting at you, I'm ranting at Apple.
Yes, I backed it up.  It did not work when I tried this to get my playlists back.
