It is nearly all a matter of personal choice and preference.

Google Update presumably updates Google Software, and Virtual Earth may be Google software.
Shockwave Flash is commonly used but that may well include adverts and such that you may consider a waste of bandwidth and resources
Adobe PDF reader is commonly used, but Firefox does have its own capabilities for dealing with pdf files now.

Nik Software Plug-Ins are not compatible with Aperture 3

After installing my upgrade to Aperture 3, I get a message when attempting to use one of my Nik Software editing plug-ins. The message says that the plug-ins are not 64-bit (they are 34-bit) and in order to run them, Aperture must close and reopen in 34-bit mode. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

In order to open Aperture in 32-bit mode by default you can right-click on the application icon, select "Get Info" and check the box marked "Open In 32-bit Mode" (or you can continue to run it by default in 64-bit mode and just get forced to re-open the app anytime you need to use plug-ins that can only run in 32-bit mode).

3rd party plug-ins are not displayed in channel strip audio unit insert

I have successfully loaded several 3rd party plug-ins (Wave Masters and IK multimedia Studio Bundle) into my MacBook Pro. The files are shown in Library>Audio>Plug-ins>Components, in User>Downloads, and they appear in my Audio Unit Manager (for each the box is checked for access from Logic Pro). Yet, when I go to a channel strip to launch some of the plug-ins, the product does not show up under audio units. How do I get these plug-in files to the insert list for my audio channels? Unfortunately, I need to launch these plug-ins in order to authorize them with the vendor. I must be missing a key step, but I have not had this issue before with other 3rd party plug-ins. Thanks for any direction.

Also, I know in the case of my IK Multimedia Classic Studio Reverb, it will NOT be available from within my 3rd party plug-in list, on a MONO channel.
I need to be opening the list on a stereo track (or stereo Aux), in order to be able to select those plug-ins.

Which plug-ins are the problem?

Suddenly a number of my CS3 files are showing up as "exec" icons, and won't open in CS3. The error message suggest either file format problems (no), file being open (no) or a missing plug-in. How do you go about finding out which plug-in is missing or corrupt?

is on the top of the file. That means Quark. If you want them to open in InDesign and you have the plug-in to open it from Markzware you have to use the open dialog or the Markzware pallet.
What you have is files without extensions and you will need to have that fixed prior to moving up to 10.6 as creator codes are deprecated in that version. If you need to set them you can do so with any number of creator code utilities such as DropCT or my preferred one TCSet.app. Quark's creator code is XPR3 and it's Type is XDOC.
Changing creator codes is about the closest thing to dirty work you can do on a mac. Always do it to a copy when possible. Also what is most likely your problem is that you are connecting to your files through windows or unix file servers that your mac isn't seeing them. Ensure if it is on a remote file server that you are connecting via AFP or the server didn't recently get upgraded to something and services for mac wasn't installed. The codes are most likely there. It's also possible they got stripped due to one reason or the next (windows zip command, victim of a file restore though a backup program that didn't correctly restore the resource fork, posted to a webserver without being archived correctly).
If it was on a file server that you don't have control of I would point at that. Contact your network admin guy and tell him what the issue is and see if he can remedy it. If that is the case and you get the rigamarole that it is too hard to fix find a higher up and get them to shake the tree, it should be doable.

Ever since I upgraded to FF6, some pics and videos do not load or play. It does not ask if it can install a plug-in either. Some plug-ins are not compatible with FF6, but I don't know which plug-ins I can use. Please help!

I had this problem on previous versions of FF and thought the upgrade would help, but it didn't.

Did you ever get your iPhone to register with iTunes? I just upgraded as well to Snow Leopard, and my my isn't recognized at all also.
If you did get this resolved, I would appreciate a little suggestion in the right direction.

Trying to play a video on CNN for my school class. Warning message recieved; Vidoe has timed out while trying to play. Please be sure to check that plug ins are not blocking java or flash player.

I can play videos but not the ones I need for my classroom. I cannot get them to play even though I unblocked everything java and everything flash player I could find. I would love a solution to this problem asap! Thank you very much.

FYI for the rest of you that might be having the same problem. DON'T USE A BELKIN ROUTER WITH AOL ON A MBP!!!!! It ***** wirelessly. or even hard connected, it won't connect. I went to best buy today, and got a refund on the belkin. I then went to J&R and got a D-Link router. And now it works perfect. I can now chat on AOL yet again, and I tried all the other web browsers I have and messengers, and warcraft 3 online via battlenet. And it works great. I want to give you guys a special thanks for taking time out to answer back to my post. FYI! Belkin wireless G routers do not connect you to AOL wirelessly on MBP's. No matter how much you mess around on them. I highly recommend a D-Link Router. They are easy to set up as long as you READ ( AND I MEAN IT!!!) read the instructions before you set anything up on it. Use the CD that it comes with, and you'll be good to go. Set it up and it works great Almost no dead zones in the house, and now I can use the MBP with all it's cababilities. Thanks people. I really appreciate it.
P.S. I called belkin last night when i decided to get a refund on my router for today and when i talked to the tech, after puersuading him to tell me the truth. And stop BS'ing me, he broke down and admited that AOL does not work wirelessly on MBP's. So to make a long story short this time, There you go. And one last note, I'm very happy now with my d-link router. I honestly thought it would suck. Not being a brand name router or anything. But amazingly, it works like a brand name item! How do I tell what Plug-Ins are installed on Safari?

The Settings > Safari menu on the iPhone has a switch to turn Plug-Ins on and off, but is no link on the menu to display which Plug-Ins are installed. Is there another way to view/manage Safari Plug-Ins on the iPhone?

Thanks for the confirmation. I tried browsing the local file that would normally display the plug-in information in the full desktop version of Safari, but the handheld version throws a message that it can't display local files.
It would be nice if there were information on line regarding what plug-ins are installed. I can see how they would want to keep tight control over installation and updates, but it would be nice to know what the unit will not work with. Lack of .swf support has already been discovered to be an issue.

Jim, that sounds like a good hypothesis. Yes, I am using smart previews. I have my originals on an external drive which is connected. Still, LR can not find them. Do you know how to tell LR where to find the originals? I would like LR to identify the source automatically: if external drive is connected LR should show "original and smart preview" not only "smart preview". Thanks for your help.

The "edit in" does not launch if I make any develop changes. I am using LR 5.6 and all of my plug ins are properly installed, up to date and were working just fine. Edit in does work if I reset the image or load an unmodified DNG.

I am using LR5.6 on a Windows 7 machine with plenty of memory. LR, CS5 and all of my plug ins have been working just fine. Tonight I've found that if I make any kind of significant adjustments to an image, and the go to "Edit in.." that function does not launch. I can use the Edit in command on an unmodified image, or if I reset the modified image. I have the issue with all of my plug ins, including Photoshop, all of the Nik software, RadLab, and OnOne. I believe that all of the plug ins are current. I've been working with them yesterday and I had no issue. I cannot recall anything that has changed since then, and I have not installed any software. I'm at a loss!! Please help!

I have traced the problem to a corrupted profile. When I captured the images in question, I also used Color Cherckr to create a profile for processing. When I apply that profile to the adjustments I make, I can no longer "Edit In". If I use another profile, even one that I created using Color Checkr at a different point in time, I don't have the issue. Something seems to have corrupted the new profile. I will re-create the profile and see if the issue is resolved.

I have had this problem for a few days, no sound in Firefox, but IE and WMP (offline) have sound, this is a Firefox ONLY problem, so the volumes are all set correctly and the drivers and needed files are there, I've tried every fix that people have suggested on Google like checking the flash player settings, creating the "missing.reg" registry file and importing it, etc...
nothing works, I may just have to switch to Safari or Chrome, I watch a lot of video online (Youtube, ESPN3, NFL.com, etc.) so this is a huge problem...

For background: I lost my v6 because I had to reformat my whole hard drive. When I reformatted I lost GB and everything else I had. I downloaded GB (unaware of the awfulness that is v10) from the App Store. The fact that v10 does not have all my favorite and most used effects from v6, I uninstalled v10 and redownloaded v6 from my App Store Purchases. I load up v6 only to find that all the default effects are there for each instrument, but when I go to add an effect (i.e. Distortion, Vocal Transformer, Flanger, etc.), instead of the list of classic effects, there's the list of awful AU effects from v10. What gives?!

Firefox 4 couldn't find compatible plugins, but didn't say in the final message, which ones it had failed to find. I've reinstalled 3.6.17. Is there a way to discover which plug-ins were lost?

I was exhorted to upgrade to Firefox 4. Believing that like most such upgrades, it would be compatible and inconsequential, I did so. Having completed installation, it told me that a couple of plug-ins were incompatible (Yahoo and another which I didn't note) and that it would search for compatible plug-ins. When it finally told me that none were available, it didn't then say which were not installed, so I had no way of going back to find out. I followe instructions on a previous question to uninstall FF4 and reinstall FF3.6.17. How can I now discover which plug-ins were lost and thus restore them?

You can set the prefs dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.* to false on the about:config page to disable the plugin-container process.
