Which processor is best for Oracle 10G database : Intel or AMD
Hi,
I am buying a new laptop for 34000 rs (700$) . I am configuring it for my office use. i am oracle apps developer.
Can anyone suggest shud i go for Caompaq or Acer?
Which processor will best handle Oracle 10G database? Inter Core Duo or AMD Turion?
Thanks,

Hi,
I am not sure about "hosting a serveice means". i will be installing Oracle discoverer administrator and optionally pl/sql developer.
I remember that we had installed oracle10g on my friends AMD desktop....and that had killed the performance like crazy. It must have something to do with the configuration of instance. I have at least two desktops running AMD and it works perfectly fine.
>
The laptop i m buying is *250 GB HDD, 2 GB RAM and windows vista*.As Nicolas has rightly pointed out in his post, which version of Vista is this? Remember that Vista Home edition is not supported by Oracle. You might get the things to run but you cannot guarantee the stability.
The only thing i m confused bout is whther i shud go for AMD or Inter core processor.
In this case, this would be a matter of personal choice. Both processors are at par with each other (now I am not going into the details of architecture and other things).

Which ojdbc14.jar JDBC driver to use for Oracle 10g database
When ODI is installed there seems to be an Oralce JDBC driver in place in the drivers folder (ojdbc14.jar).
When we connect to an Oracle datastore and point to a table and use the 'reverse' function to populate the columns - it sort of works OK but does not bring back the datatypes properly. This is found to be when the Oracle table has UNICODE character datatypes NCHAR and NVARCHAR. If a table has CHAR and VARCHAR it is all OK but any table that has UNICODE datatyoe has a problem.
Is this likely to be the JDBC driver ?
We have tried replacing this ojdbc14.jar with the older classes12 and this, as expected, did not resolve the issue.
We then tried replacing it with the latest 10.2.0.4 ojdbc14.jar but again no difference.
Does anyone have any experience with Oracle JDBC drivers and what release level to use - and using against UNICODE datatypes in tables ?
RegardsOur problem is that when we use 'reverse' to populate the columns from a physicla table in an Oracle database - ODI is obviously 'seeing' the ORacle table and is correctly understanding the columns in the table and defining them in it's model - but wherever there is a column with a datatype in the ORacle database of NCHAR or NVARCHAR it fails to populate the datatype or the 'length' of these columns. If I manually try to specify the datatype these 2 unicode data types do NOT exist in the pull down list of datatypes.
I see what you are asking - if these datatypes are actually defined as datatypes within the actual technology - I cant access my lab right now but will check as soon as I can. Thanks for the suggestion. -
Suitable Processor for Oracle 10g
Hi All ,
Currently, Our Oracle 10g with RAC (Real Application Cluster) is running in the Server Sun Fire V240 (SUNW,UltraSPARC-IIIi) with 4GB of RAM.
We have an idea to upgrade the processor. Please give me your suggestion, which processor is best for Oracle 10G with RAC.
I am awaiting for your response.
Regards,
R. Rajesh Kannan. It would depend on the load. How many people using it, and what are they all doing.

Which Sun processor is better for Oracle database
We are going to pick one Sun processor for Oracle 10g database. UltraSPARC IV+ or T1? UltraSPARC IV+ is good for Floating Point performance while T1 is good for multi-threaded integer performance. Which one fits Oracle database better?
Thank you for help.Hi
With the database engine a CPU spends most of its time doing memory I/O. So, the performance of floating point and integer operations is not essential. In any case the database engine use floating point operations only marginally. Integer operations are much more frequent.
Personally, I would not spend money for these two processors. If you want to buy your hardware by Sun take a x64-Server (Opteron).

Any doc or guide on how to install Linux for Oracle 10g
I am looking for any documentation or guide which will describe the step by step process for installing RedHat Linux Enterprise 4 for Oracle 10g database installation.
Note.. i am not looking for Oracle installtion guide.. I need RedHat installation guide for oracle 10 database installation. This will be your best bet.
I was able install Oracle using the docs on this site.

Can't Create the ODBC connection for Oracle 10g
Hi,
I am working with Oracle 10g Database Release 2 in windows XP professional. I am trying to create an ODBC connection for oracle but become failure because its generating the following errors:
system error code 998
could not locate the setup or translator library
Please help me how can I solve this problem and create the ODBC connection for oracle 10g database.
Best Regards,mwz wrote:

system error code 998
could not locate the setup or translator libraryThe symptom described is typical of an incorrect system env PATH setting (used by the data source admin tool), compared to that of the Oracle Home (specifically, path $OH/bin). The odbc driver config routine will search directories listed in PATH variable for necessary libraries (Client dll's). If some library fails to load (from e.g. oraoci*.dll or oraclient10.dll) it will probably error out, as in your case.
Are you creating the odbc dsn on the databse server host or on some other machine? I.e. are you using the db host as a client or not? -
Hardening Linux for Oracle 10g
I have been working on creating a bare-bones RHEL 5 installation which will act as an Oracle 10g database server. For hardening Linux, I have restricted to a bare minimum of packages to make it more secure. This installation did not have X-Windows, Gnome/KDE and a host of other services that will not be required on Production servers. I selected only the BASE installation which was further customized to include just the following (there is scope to trim this further, so feedback is welcome):
NetworkManager
readahead
smartmontools
yum-updatesd
irqbalance
acpid
crash
cryptsetup-luks
dos2unix
dump
finger
gnugpg
ksh
libaio
logwatch
m2crypto
man-pages
mdadm
nano
numactl
openssh-clients
openssh-servers
pam_ccreds
pam_krb5
pam_passwdqc
sendmail
setuptools
stunnel
sudo
symlinks
system-config-network
tree
unix2dos
unzip
vconfig
wget
which
yum
yum-rhn-plugin
yum-security
zip
Since I do not intend to use nfs, nis, samba – associated packages were not included. Further hardening was achieved by deleting non-required services (kudzu, avahi, gpm, atd, netfs, ip6tables).
The challenge comes when I begin setting up Oracle 10g using the oracle validated rpm method. In an attempt to resolve dependencies, YUM ends up installing 70 packages that do not apparently seem to have anything to do with an RDBMS (sound libraries, Gnome, X libraries and tools etc.). For me the libraries/binaries required for linking appear to be justified but the rest appear to be installed only for the Installer.
This package addition also ends up installing gamin which provides the gam_server which has bugs in it that lead to > 90% CPU consumption.
I further tried erasing some of the packages to see if anything broke. Till now nothing is broken and the database is running fine. Till now I have removed:
gamin
gamin-python
gnome-mount
gnome-vfs2
libbonoboui
libgnome
libgnomeui
oracle-validated
yum-updatesd
esound
hicolor-icon-theme
GConf2
gnome-keyring
gtk2
libglade2
libgnomecanvas
libnotify
libwnck
notification-daemon
audiofile
cups-libs
gnome-mime-data
cairo
pango
My questions:
• How have you created a production/hardened Linux based Oracle installation?
• Can you share your experiences in hardening Linux for Oracle and deploying the Oracle 10g RDBMS without installing the scores of packages which themselves might compromise the server?
• What exactly is the dependency for the Oracle 10g RDBMS on X11, Gnome, Gamin and graphic libraries such as Cairo and Pango (to name a few)?
• Which Linux system services are really mandatory for Oracle?
• Does a non-default secure installation compromise Oracle support?
The current memory footprint for this setup (without any workload) is (figures in MB):
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1010 458 552 0 19 377
-/+ buffers/cache: 61 949
Swap: 2047 0 2047
…of this 290 MB belongs to Oracle ☺
I will be working with the other route – without using the oracle-validated rpm.
Please let me have your feedback.

Compatability Matrix for Oracle 10g
I'm searching for the compatability matrix for Oracle 10g database. Need certified combinations for Operating system (Unix/Windows), Application servers (BEA/IBM) , Web servers, etc.
Can anyone post me the link?
Thanks in advance.I'm searching for the compatability matrix for Oracle 10g database. Need certified combinations for Operating system (Unix/Windows)Here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/support/metalink/index.html
Application servers (BEA/IBM) , Web servers, etc. There are not cert. matrices for app. servers from other vendors.
You can use whathever application server in combination with Oracle 10g BEA/IBM/JBOSS, etc. Everything you need appropriate client (for example for application in Java - Oracle JDBC connector which is free to download). -
Oracle 10g database installation in red hat 5
what are the packages needed for oracle 10g database installation in red hat 5?
what do you mean by yum way of installation?Check on the release notes for your platform
This is for x86-64 Linux.. read it all, then you'll find the "6 Documentation Corrections and Additions" section you'll find the RPMs that you need
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/relnotes.102/b15666/toc.htm
then go to the official doc installation of 10gR2 on x86-64 Linux
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15667/toc.htm
Yum is a package management tool. This is what you'll be using to install the RPMs. But first you'll have to setup the Yum repository, usually what I do is stage the DVD media on the server then make it as a repository. If ever there's a specific (higher) version that I need then I just pull it on the RedHat Network.
There are a lot of HOWTOs about Yum. You may read on this link http://docs.fedoraproject.org/yum/en/

"Installing the Oracle10g or Oracle 11g Sample Schemas
1.
If you have dropped the sample schemas from Oracle 10g or Oracle 11g, or if you did not install them in the first place, you should install them following the instructions in Oracle Database Sample Schemas 10g Release 1 (10.1), Oracle Database Sample Schemas 10g Release 2 (10.2) or Oracle Database Sample Schemas 11g Release 1 (11.1). The SQL scripts are on a separate companion CD and are also available for manual installation by right clicking here. " -

"In-Memory Database Cache" option for Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition
Hi,
In one of our applications, we are using TimesTen 5.1.24 and Oracle 9i
databases (platform - Solaris 9i).
TimesTen holds application information which needs to be accessed quickly
and Oracle 9i is a master application database.
Now we are looking at an option of migrating from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g
database. While exploring about Oracle 10g features, came to know about
"In-Memory Database Cache" option for Oracle Enterprise Edition. This made
me to think about using Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition with "In-Memory
Database Cache" option for our application.
Following are the advantages that I could visualize by adopting the
above-mentioned approach:
1. Data reconciliation between Oracle and TimesTen is not required (i.e.
data can be maintained only in Oracle tables and for caching "In-Memory
Database Cache" can be used)
2. Data maintenance is easy and gives one view access to data
I have following queries regarding the above-mentioned solution:
1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
"In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
cache feature)?
3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
in making this statement?
5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
Database Cache"?
In "Options and Packs" chapter in Oracle documentation
(http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/options.htm
#CIHJJBGA), I encountered the following statement:
"For the purposes of licensing Oracle In-Memory Database Cache, only the
processors on which the TimesTen In-Memory Database component of the
In-Memory Database Cache software is installed and/or running are counted
for the purpose of determining the number of licenses required."
We have servers with the following configuration. Is there a way to get the
count of processors on which the Cache software could be installed and/or
running? Please assist.
Production box with 12 core 2 duo processors (24 cores)
Pre-production box with 8 core 2 duo processors (16 cores)
Development and test box with 2 single chip processors
Development and test box with 4 single chip processors
Development and test box with 6 single chip processors
Thanks & Regards,
VijayHi Vijay,
regarding your questions:
1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
"In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
==> Product has just been renamed and integrated better with the Oracle database - Times-Ten == In-Memory-Cache-Database
2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
cache feature)?
==> Seperate Installation
3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
==> Please have a look here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/quickstart/cc_qs_index.html
This explains the differences.
4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
in making this statement?
==> Please see above mentioned papers
5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
Database Cache"?
==> Again ... ;-)
Kind regards
Mike
