Which Profile to Assign to photos ?

Good day all.
I have been re-checking all of the photos in my hardcover book to make sure they will print well.
Of course now I am more confused than ever.
In Preview > Tools when I click on the "Assign Profile" I am even more confused.
Firstly, each photo I open , the info says Color Model is RGB (I assume this is what I want it to say), but next to Profile Name, some photos say Camera RGB Profile, yet others say IMac, and yet others say "nothing".
My choices of what to assign to each photo are as follows:
Adobe RGB (1998), Epson Adobe RGB (1998), Epson Apple RGB, Epson Color Match RGB, Epson sRGB,
Generic RGB Profile, IMac, sRGB Profile
Most of my photos are color but have about 20 that are black and white, but have been assigned RGB. There are a few photos that come up "Color Sync Profile" with either IMac beside them or nothing at all.
Could anyone please advise me as to which of these profiles I should assign to my photos.
The more I read the more lost I get. I hope this plea for help isn't too confusing.
Thanks
PJC

What you want is either the Camera RGB Profile or the sRGB Profile – they are almost identical.
Do not under any circumstances use "Assign Profile..." on any images that have a profile different from the two above assigned to them. That would distort the colours.
Instead you need to convert them to the Camera RGB- or sRGB Profile. If you use Preview as your editor choose "Match to Profile..." and select either profile.
It's hard to say what to do about the images that lack profile information. They might have originated in the sRGB colour space so again they should look fine with either the Camera RGB Profile or the sRGB Profile. In this case it is helpful to use the Assign command instead – if they look good afterwards save them, if they don't, try another profile until you like what you see and afterwards convert them as described before using *Match to Profile...*
The reason I recommend this is that the iPhoto printing service seems to be geared towards sRGB. Many users have reported unsatisfactory results with images that had another profile such as Adobe RGB (1998) assigned to them.
For more background information read Assign versus Convert – in Preview convert is called *Match to Profile*.

  • How do i add a border to my assignment in photo shop

can someone please walk me thru adding a border to an assignment in photo shop

There are lots of ways of adding borders, it really just depends on what kind of border you want (appearance).
For example, to add a simple matte to your work, you can set your background color swatch to the desired matting color and then go to Image > Canvas Size and increase the size by the desired amount (if you want 1 inch on each side, increase by 2 inches which will add half to each side if your position is in the center).

  • Camera Calibration - which Profile to use?

This is a spin out of another thread in the forum - How do I avoid magenta discolouring?.
I am using a Lr 5.7.1 on OS X Mavericks (10.9.5) and photos from 3 cameras - Nikon D600, Nikon D40, and Canon 450D - they all exhibit a very similar behaviour with RAW files described below, but it much more noticeable with the Nikons and very noticeable with the D600. I have been using Lr since version 3 (I think but I might have started with version 2, I cannot remember).
By default I have always imported my RAW files leaving the profile under Camera Calibrations as Adobe Standard. I have been moderately unhappy with the results I was seeing in Lr, not with all the images but with quite a few of them; in a nutshell they don't as I envision them and they don't look the way they look in camera. With "the way the look in camera" I mean inspecting the histograms and clipping warnings.
I am fully ware that Lr does not read the picture control settings of any camera, my Nikons have always being set to Standard.
Below are 2 screenshots from a photo taken with the D600.
    1) Histogram with Adobe Standard profile
    2) After and before view, left "Adobe Standard" right "Camera Standard"
There are 2 different images, the histogram is changed, the greens are render differently. I also know which one I'll pick for further work, the right image, the one with Camera Standard as the profile.
Back to the question for this post: Camera Calibration, which Profile to use? (and why?)

    ssprengel wrote:
Which profile to use is a matter of personal taste, so why does it matter what other people use?
I am not sure I would agree with this statement without making some important qualifications.
Camera profiles can be used for creative purposes, no disagreement there. However, I don't think this is the sole purpose of camera calibration and camera profile, isn't it? Jeff Schewe, who sometimes contributes to this forum, wrote in The Digital Negative "The profiles are designed to calibrate a particular camera model's particular colour rendering intent [...]. It's entirely possible that your particular camera might be a bit different from the one they profiled, so you might be able to make a customer profile for your camera that would produce a more accurate rending than what comes with Lightroom and Camera Raw"; the quote is taken from his section on Lightroom Camera Calibration and leads to conclude that the purpose of camera profiles is also to reproduce the colour rendering intent of camera.
My point on the original post is that it seems that Camera Standard, with both my Nikons set to "Standard" picture controls, seems to better reproduce the colour rendering intent of both cameras, specially if greens are involved. All I am looking for is advice regarding best practice. This is absolutely non trivial from my point of view, best practice is not a matter of personal taste as I am sure you know. Insisting that default settings are best practice, I am not saying you are saying this, is not helpful.
    ssprengel wrote:
As to your question about making Camera Standard the default profile, you do it the same as customizing any other LR default:  by selecting an unedited photo, setting Camera Standard as its profile, then on the keyboard use Alt - Set Default…  (the button was Reset before pressing Alt) then confirm that you want to update the LR defaults to the current settings.
    This is correct.
    ssprengel wrote:
I am not sure how to find photos with a particular camera profile but perhaps one of the filters in Library can do that, or a smart collection query.  I don’t have LR in front of me right now to try things, myself.
I don't think this possible. I cannot find a way to do it with smart collections or the filter library. I'll keep experimenting.

On iPhoto, I can no longer access the 'Classic' option which would lay out my photos on the page. It will send them as attachments only. I need the page layout for my work. Any thoughts as to why this has changed? It used to fully lay out the photos so I could add notes and detailed information before I sent them. I am thinking it is something simple that I have just missed...

The "Photos" view has been replaced by the Media Browser.
Most applications will show you the Photos icon in the Sidebar, when you need to select photos in a file chooser dialoge. Mail, Safari, the iWork apps. See Terence Devlin's User Tip: How to Access Files in iPhoto
For example, in the File > Open dialogue in Preview I am seeing this in the sidebar.

  • Getting error message in debug "Page contains page items/buttons which are not assigned to a region!"

    Hi,
I created a form and when I submit, it goes through but there is no "success" or "failure" message on Apex. I tried debugging it and got this message:
"Page contains page items/buttons which are not assigned to a region!"
I looked at the page definition and it seems like everything is assigned to a region. Much appreciate your help.
    Thanks!

For your message, the relevant branch needs "include process success message" to be checked - and a value in success/failure in your process.
Check the submitting & landing page for items not in a region. Under the items section there may be items listed separate to those under specific regions.
It's possible these are related, but not guaranteed.

I don't know what you're asking here - the system clearly tells you what to do, it even offers to start a wizard to guide you through the process...

I created a photo album on my iPhone 4s - edited photos etc. but I cannot figure out how to transfer it to my pc (using Windows 8).  The only folder in the iphone drive is the one which has the Camera roll photos Help please - I really need the photos!

The camera roll is not part of the sync process at all.
You should be importing these photos to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.  Youc an organize them on your computer and sync the to the iphone if you wish.
The photos sync from the computer to the iphone is one way.
The iphone mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.

I just Synced My iPhone 6 which had close to 2000 photos to a new computer (windows PC) and synced with iTunes. Now all my previous photos have been deleted which were there on my phone. Please suggest a way to recover those Photos . Thanks
P.S -I have not taken any backup of those photos. So please suggest any software or any other method.

If those photos were part of the camera roll, they were part of the backup as well and you can restore from the latest backup you made on the old computer. After that transfer the photos to the new PC, follow this article: iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
Then sync again to the new one, which will erase the phone again.
You can also try to copy the backup folder from the old computer to the new one and see if the old backups get recognized, check this article to find the location on your PC:
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes
If the photos were not taken with the phone, your data is gone, photos you sync from iTunes to the phone are not included in the backup.
