I've got a problem. My mother's an enthusiastic photographer but only a basic computer user. She's asked me to get Photoshop for her to fiddle with so she can start editing her photos. My problem is that only experience with Photoshop is when it first came out all those years ago. Now there're several different programs from which to choose: CS, Lightroom, etc. I need something that has everything she wants or can learn comfortably but isn't overwhelming. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
PS - Her computer runs Vista, if that's any concern.

Photoshop Elements is intended for the novice/hobbyist (or someone not experienced with computers).
As she learns and requires more, you can buy the more advanced Photoshop versions.

First thing.... sign up for the Unlimited USA & Canada subscription. You can get it for US$ 2.99/month, or a year at a time with a 15% discount. Once you have the subscription, you can purchase an Online Number in the USA. There are numbers available in most US states and area codes. The numbers cost US$ 18/3 months or US$ 60/year, but you get a 50% discount on the online number if you already have a subscription.
With this, you essentially get a Skype account that can receive calls with a US telephone number, and make unlimited calls (subject to Skype's fair-use policy) to landline and mobile phones in the USA and Canada, for around US$ 60/year - or about US$ 5/month. If you have any need to send SMS messages, you can do that using Skype credit. You won't be able to receive SMS messages with Skype.

, is there a way to find out which user has what permissions in the entire domain? Are there any tools / software
that can be leveraged to get such information.

Based on my knowledge, you need to use PFDavAdmin Tool to open mailboxes and verify the folder permission of calendar on Exchange 2007. Since the Get-MailboxFolderPermission cmdlet is unavailable for Exchange 2007.
In Exchange 2010, the most suitable command should be "MailboxFolderPermission" for calendar permission. If you would like to check the permissions that user2 has to view user1's calendar, you can use the following cmdlet:
Get-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity "User1:\Calendar" -User User2
What's more, you can use the Get-Mailbox | Get-MailboxfolderPermission cmdlet to query the permissions of all the folders.
Get-Mailbox | Get-MailboxfolderPermission

I got mine (2 weeks ago) 64GB WiFi+3G (Verizon) from the apple store online
I didnt have to do anything to it, turned it on, activated it, got it on my home network then I signed up for the 3G data service, it works where ever I happen to be. (if there is an unknown WiFi connection available it asks me if I want to join before it continues to connect to the 3G when I am surfing or getting e-mail)
do you have an Apple Store close enough to travel to?
I am only assuming here, but since you have a SIM you are not in the US correct?

I have some jobs created by some program. The job is incomplete, i.e., the programs which created the job just used 'JOB_OPEN' and it doesn't have any steps.
Is there any way to find out which program created that incomplete job?

How do you define which program opens what?

For example, how do I tell mac to open all .php files with TextMate? I tried the open always with but it only works for that one file. The other .php files go back to another text editor. I want it for all of them.

this would possibly be the original application that "assigns" a particular icon to the file. you could try to copy the file (i.e. keep one safe/unmodified) and off the copy delete the extension. You will then be asked to confirm (as it's a copy you can play around with it).
Then open textmate and open the file from there and save it via textmate. This might result in a different icon.
You can always change every icon by highlighting the icon in the "get info" and pasting the icon of choice. Find a useful article:

You will need a Mac, with OS X 10.6+ on it, to be able to develop iOS apps.

This is a MacBook Pro 15" (Model number A1286) running Mavericks. Hard drive is fine but system software has been corrupted. I cannot simply restore from Time Machine as it will copy the corrupt system.
Will I have to find all of my serial numbers before I can launch any of the programs?

Are you able to uninstall iTunes and QuickTime?
You might have to search for the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, which would allow you to remove some applications that you can't from Control Panel.
Also, take a look at this Apple document -> Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows.

Probably don't need citrix software. Is you computer in the office on LAN? Also, is the office computer setup for remote access? If it's windows then its going to be running Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) natively. If it is in fact RDP that your windows machine at work is using then you need to download RDC for mac. I use it to connect to my work computer using RDP (don't tell the "Info Tech" dude at my office) and if your not too tech savvy I would suggest trying GOTOMYPC. It's alot easier to setup. But if you have experience in setting up remote access and your Windows office machine is connected through LAN and your IT TECH has allowed port forwarding then you should be just fine with RDP and it's free!!! But are you logging onto your actual computer at work or logging into the "SERVER" through your work machine... believe me it's two completely different things.
Basically, you'll need:
1. Physichal IP address of work computer. (If office computer is on WIFI this won't work) use IPCONFIG commands in command prompt
2. Port forwarding needs to be enabled by your IT Tech
3. Remote Desktop settings will need to be enabled on the office computer
4. Download RDC for mac (search google)
5. Type the physical IP address into RDC and hit connect... type in credentials and your all done.
We need lots more details though... there are many ways to connect remotely and if your office already has a system in place for remote access then any details would be helpful in determining which method will suit you best. If it's citrix just have your IT dude set it up. If you think you need citrix then good luck....
