Which protocol to use when using Airport Express as a travel router?

I plan to use my new Airport Express mainly as a travel router. When I create a network, should I configure it to use PPPoE or DHCP? Basically, when I get to hotel I'm going to hook it up to the modem...so whichever protocol hotels use is what I want to configure it for. When I configure it on my home network, where I have SBC, I have to use PPPoE; DHCP won't work. But I think hotels have DHCP servers...anyone? thanks!

PPPoE is a protocol that allows you to log into ADSL service, most hotels have DHCP servers that will assign you an IP address, so you would select DHCP.
Happy Traveling!

  • Using Airport Express as a travel router

At home I use my Airport Express to extend the range of my existing Airport Extreme WDS. When I travel can I take the Airport Express to hotels as a travel router to make the DSL signal in my hotel room into a wireless one? Do I need to reconfigure the Airport Express and if so, how do I configure it? Or do I just plug it in and go?

Hello rkhoo. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since most hotels utilize a router to provide Internet access to the guest rooms, you should only have to have your AX configured in bridge mode.
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility (located in the \Applications\Utilities folder), make these settings:
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    o Apply the new setting.
To make it easier to switch between using the AX at home or other locations, you should take advantage of AX's configuration profiles.
The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can store up to five different configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Admin Utility, located in Applications/Utilities to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
o Open AirPort Admin Utility, and select your AX from the list, and then, click Configure.
o Click the Profiles icon in the toolbar.
o Click Add to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
o Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
o When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
o Open the AirPort Admin Utility, and select your AX from the list, and then, click Configure.
o Click the Profiles icon in the toolbar.
o Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • Use AirPort Express to Extend Original Router's Range

I have an existing router that works fine for the first and second floors of my house (it is not an Apple router), however, my Apple TV is in the basement and the WiFi coverage is absolutely horrible. I'm curious if I can use an AirPort Express router to extend the range of the initial router (I have Ethernet access in the basement) so that I can stream to my Apple TV from anywhere in the house.
    Thanks!

Yes, if the AirPort Express is configured to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name, same wireless security setting (WPA2 Personal) and same wireless password as your existing router.
In addition, the AirPort must be configured to operate in Bridge Mode.
Other than naming the network and entering the password, AirPort Utility will take care of most of the settings automatically, assuming you have Mac running Lion (10.7.x), Mountain Lion (10.8.x), Mavericks (10.9.x), or you use an iPhone or iPad for the setup.
Note.....it would be much better if you could connect the Apple TV to the AirPort Express or your existing router using an Ethernet cable connection, not wireless.

  • Using airport express with 3com modem/router

    Hi all,
    I have a 3COM modem/wifi router with serial code 3CRWE754G72-A.
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and to my dismay the wifi does not work with my Router (I have all latest updates etc.). I have no idea why, but apple support say its cos my router is crap and they dont support 3rd party routers (they checked my MBP and found nothing wrong with it apparently, connects to apple base stations no probs)... there are loads of threads on this topic of incompatible wifi routers with the MBP in the MBP discussion area so I wont go into details on that.
My question is: is there any way the airport express could be of use? From what I understand usually you can use it to extend your wireless network by adding it as a client to the existing network. However I am suspicious if it will pickup on my 3com wireless network... my MBP doesnt so I wouldnt be surprised if this didnt either!! Is it somehow possible to disable the wifi on my 3com router and connect it directly via ethernet to an airport express, and use the airport express solely for createing the wifi network?
    Any other suggestions welcome!

My question is: is there any way the airport express could be of use?
The only thing the AirPort Express (AX) could possibly do is join the wireless network created by that router as a client. This would only give you the ability to use the AX's USB printer port and AX's audio output. This would NOT give you the ability to use the AX's Ethernet port.
If your MacBook Pro can't join the wireless network provided by that device, the AX probably can't either.
The AX can not be used to extend the network provided by that device nor can the AX's Ethernet port be enabled to allow you to connect your MacBook Pro. Both of these require compatibility with Apple's WDS which that device does not have.

  • Using airport express with a 2wire router

I just got Bellsouth DSL with a 2wire dsl modem that is also a wireless router.
It works fine, but I still want to use my airport express to listen to music.
I can't figure out how to do so, though I have tried various configurations
with the airport setup utility. Anyone have any ideas? How can I use
    express with another wireless router?

Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing 2wire's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

Looks like I fixed it., thanks to another post I read.  I went into my Norton Security.  Under Settings. Chose Firewall. Program rules. changed the itunes setting from "auto" to "allow"  This also fixed my error (-3212) which would not allow me to connect to the iTunes store.

  • Does the ethernet port work when the using airport express in client mode?

I am considering using an airport express to extend my existing wireless network to a room where I can't get a cable to.
I will need to connect a at least 3 devices to the airport express.
    The questions are:
    - is an airport express the right answer to this problem?
    - if so, does the ethernet port work (AE on client mode) as a passthru into the main network?
    - can I plug a hub to it?
    Thanks
    RFSF

    Hi Tesserax,
Really appreciate you taking time to respond.
I stopped by the Apple store this weekend and one of their sales people ( not one of their genius bar people) told me NO to all questions.  I tend to believe more answers from people in this forum but just realize that I have not mentioned one possibly important point:
the main AP to which I will be connecting the airport express is not an Airport Extreme/Express AP.
    Thanks,
    Ricardo.

  • Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

How can I use AirPort Express when traveling?

How can I use AirPort Express when traveling?
Connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet port in your room.....to be able to create your own private wireless network in your room for multiple devices.
You will still have to pay the hotel Internet charge for one device, if the hotel charges for Internet access.
If the hotel only provides wireless service, then a single AirPort Express will not help you.
However, if you have two AirPort Express devices, then you can use one to "join" the hotel wireless network, then connect the second Express to the first using an Ethernet cable and create your own wireless network for multiple devices in your room.

  • Is there any way to stop the delay between different sets of speakers when using airport express?

Is there any way to stop the delay between different sets of speakers when using airport express?

Unfortunately, I don't have either a Slingbox or iHome speakers so I won't be able to reproduce any of the issues you are having. With the fact that you live in large apartment complex would still lead me to believe that Wi-Fi interference may be the reason that you are having streaming issues.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • When using airport express with magic jack it disconnects when i use the phone.

When the airport express is used with magic jack it disconnects internet service when i use the phone. That is with incomming or out going calls.

I went through that very same issue with two of my Samsung phones. ....my problem turned out to be corrupted files within my 1st phone programming due to a bad OS update
The second phone issue occurred because my phones data became corrupted by a mild virus  therefore it was necessary in both cases to replace the phones. ..
But,  there is also a third option,  try removing any recent apps you've added then turn your phone off and back on to refresh
Or try doing a factory rese, I know I realize how frustrating these are but,  in some cases it fixes the issue without additional challenges. ..
You should also add the Verizon protection and security app to your phone to prevent virus and other such problems from affecting your phone going forward. ...
The best thing about this app aside from its protection is that it also enables the user to easily save and transfer their phone content between phones and backs everything up to a minimum of 25GB of the cloud
But,  you also need to turn your android phone off at least once every 3-days to maintain a good connection to the Verizon network

  • How do I use airport express to extend my wireless network?

How vcan I extend the range of my wireless network using Airport Express?

It appears that you may have "join a wireless network" and "extend a wireless network" mixed up a bit.
The Express can "join" virtually any wireless network produced by any manufacturer's router if it is provided with the correct settings:
    name of the wireless network
    the correct wireless security settings
    and correct password.
"Join" is normally used for AirTunes or to connect a USB printer to the Express for remote printing.
But, the Express does not provide any additional wirless coverage when it "joins" another wireless network.
Apple's "Extend a wireless network" feature, which was introduced about 5 years ago, allows the Express to connect to another Apple "n" wireless router and then "repeat" or "extend" the wireless signal....providing more wireless coverage in the area where the Express is located.
This is a proprietary setting. Apple says it will not work with devices from other manufacturers. To our knowledge, this is correct.
Prior to 2007, Apple used a setting called WDS to allow the Express to be configured to provide more wireless coverage. Attempts were made by a number of manufacturers to standardize the WDS settings, but things were never finalized.
The result is that Apple's older "b/g" routers were sometimes compatible with WDS settings from another manufacturer. There were a handful of products....5 or 6, as I recall....that were said to work. Some did, some didn't. Linksys had a couple of models, Netgear had one, SMC another, etc.  Extremely limited.
Since WDS was never adopted as an industry standard, manufacturers developed their own WDS settings. Compatibility was extemely limited and unreliable. That continues to this day with WDS.
Bottom line....It is always best to stick with the same manufacturer throughout your network as far as routing is concerned.
If you have an newer "n" Apple router like an AirPort Extreme, the Express can extend the wireless as can along Extreme. If your Extreme is dual band, and you want to extend both bands, then you need another Extreme.
Another responder suggested to someone that they could connect the AirPort Express to a router via Ethernet.  What exactly would that achieve?
That is a completely different subject since this discussion is about extending a wireless network using wireless only.

  • I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work?

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • Can I use airport express to create a local wireless network that my apple tv can connect to for AirPlay/mirroring in student halls/dorm without Internet connection

    Hi I was wondering :
Would I be able to make a local wireless network using airport express that my apple tv can connect to which in turn is connected to a projector with hdmi in so that I can mirror/AirPlay from iPhone pad and mac

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.
