Which RAID to go with

I have an Xserve g5 that I'm going to be using for my clients to access from anywhere in the world. I have to decide what raid to go with. I've been thinking about the Xserve raid but the thing is that it is discontinued. So I've been looking around on macsales.com and they have some pretty nice systems. Any ideas anyone on which I should get

1 xserve G5 , slim pickins. single processor or multi ? it's going to make a difference.
do you really need a RAID ? if yes, find some after market xserve raids they work very well under 10.4 on ppc G5's. If you have enough memory 10.5 would work, but 10.5 brings more CPU overhead, hence the question,.. 1 or 2 processors.
2gb, fiber channel -- > apple xserve raid. if you can can find one. new, you could use a promise Vtrak but you may need a 4gb fiber card.
some USB 2.0 and firewire Stacks can be found useful. I I have seen some very nice SSD setups also.

  • R12 - HP intel servers -Linux- SAN ... Which RAID !

    Hello,
We are about to put everything together, r12 on HP linux intel server, HP 8000 SAN storage (mix of 16 and 32 GB Hardisks).
Now the r12 is out of the box, and the issue is how to chose which Raid to go with???
any recommendations? shouldnt we not reinvent the wheel? :)

  • Which RAID Configuration for my WD "My Book Mirror Edition"?

About to reformat my WD "My Book Mirror Edition" to use on my iMac.  I hope to also install on my iMac "Virtual Box", "VM Fusion", or "Parallels"  and then run a few windows products.  Which RAID  configuration should I choose in the WD "drive configurations" box?

If I were you I'd run any Virtual Machine directly on your iMac, not on a "WD My Book Mirror Edition", in particular not when connected through USB 2.0.
To store data, the WD is fine.
    For the RAID options:
RAID 0 ("striping") : if you want something fast (insofar this is possible with a USB connection). Note that when one of your disks fails you can say goodbye to all your data.
RAID 1 ("mirroring"): more safe. If one disk fails, the data are recoverable as they are on the other disk as well.  Disadvantage is you get only half the storage capacity compared to RAID 0.
Oh. my personal recommendation: RAID 1 is not an alternative to making a backup. So whatever option you choose: if you store valuable data on the disk that are nowehere else: back them up!
    On formats:
HFS+ : definitely recommended if you only use the RAID array on the Mac.
FAT 32: if you also use it on a Windows machine. Note that files cannot be larger than 4 GB in this case.
    Hope this helps.

  • Extending RAID file system with larger disk

    Hi,
    I have a Mac pro running 10.7.5.
I used to have two 1TB disks in the internal bays configured as a raid 1 set with a single 1TB file system.  One of the disks failed and I replaced it with a 2TB disk which seems to be working ok.   However, I'm running out of space in the file system and thought to switch to 2TB.
I just got another 2TB disk and thought to replace the 1TB disk with this one. Then I would have two 2TB disks but I guess after the rebuild the file system is still 1TB.  Is there any way to extend the file system and underlying raid set on the go or do I need to disband the raid set to two independent disks first, then repartition one of them, copy data from the remaining half to this now 2TB file system and add the source disk to the raid set afterwards?

I too have a 1,1 and continue to "do things" and upgrade it.
Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD PCIe is perfect for Aperture having it on another bus controller with SATA III 6G and 550MB/sec.
$400 was never too much to spend for SCSI or for my first couple 160MB disk drive for perspective.
Mavericks (cannot run normally on ours) was suppose to offer more advantages in RAID features but even that seems to be MIA.
PS: A Sonnet Allegro USB3 PCIe $54 is a nice way to interface instead of using USB2.
I have used mirror but AFTER having a couple good backups and strategy.
So just buy a new set of 2TB or larger drives.
We have had people with iTunes library alone that needed their own 2TB volume when the largest drives were 1TB.
Done right a stripe RAID is fine, and one way I always used to have larger volumes.
"Extended volume support" is more a Windows thing, not a Mac feature.
As you found, Apple mirror RAIDs cannot 'grow' and you can't add a 2TB and suddenly have larger mirror w/o delete and create a new set.
You may be lucky that you never had a disaster. A 3-way mirror is really preferable, take one of the drives out while rebuild and you still have two in a mirror set. AND clone your volume or use something besides or in addition to TimeMachine.
A backup is only as good as your ability to restore and have a recovery plan - hopefully one that you have practiced doing but never need to.

  • RAID-1 performance with Sun v40z

We are using Sun v40z machines with built in LSI RAID controller (RAID level 1). I was wondering about the performance of RAID on these machines. Our application does a lot of I/O (mainly random and sequential reads). Since we are using a RAID-1 system with two disks, I expect the performance to be good, but it is not, and it seems that all read requests are served from one disk. We are running RedHat Linux 4.
For investigating, I used dd to read a large file and write it to /dev/null. During this operation, iostat showed around 400-500 transactions per second with 100K blocks read per second. When I instead run two parallel dd command to read from two different files, number of transactions per second drop dramatically to 100-120, with just 30-40K blocks read per second. This is very bad given that we have two disks mirrored using RAID-1 and both should be readable in parallel.
I have conducted the same experiment on a different machine (Linux desktop, non-Sun, without-RAID), and I was able to read 75-80K blocks per second with two parallel read processes.
    I am using:
    time dd of=/dev/null count=5000000 bs=16k if=file1.txt
    time dd of=/dev/null count=5000000 bs=16k if=file2.txt
I haven't configured much with the RAID controller, it is as it came with the machine. Infact, I was not able to find any documentation or support about the RAID hardware on these machines from Sun's v40z site. If you know of location of documentation, please point me to it.
Any help about how to improve the performance will be appreciated.
    thanks in advace,
    Nilesh

Most controllers will simply round-robin between the two disks, so you shoudl not expect any performance improvements between a single disk and RAID1. SVM has a "geometric" read option which theoretically can help large sequential reads, but it defaults to round robin, and my guess is that most embedded controllers do as well.
Most likely read performance falls off as you try two file copies because you are trying to copy the same file. The two processes are trying to read the same disk sectors, so one of them is going to have to wait for the disk to spin around to the same sector the other process just read. There are lots of other reasons why this could happen. You should see the same effect with a single disk.

  • Which RAID Configuration !

I'm just about to build a new system and a little undecided as to which hard drive configuration to use. I have bought two Samsung Spinpoint SATA II 400gb drives with the intention of running them in a RAID 1 (mirroring) configuration. The reason for choosing RAID 1 is that I have a large music collection currently on an IDE drive that is no longer large enough to store all the data. By transfering this data to a RAID 1 drive, I have both a larger capacity drive for storage and a back-up of the music library. I will also run the operatiing system and all other software from the RAID 1 drive.
My question is, by running a RAID 1 configuration with new SATA II drives, will I notice a significant reduction in read/write speeds compared to my current RAID 0 (striped) configuration on two SATA 1 drives ?
    Thankyou for any advice.

A RAID 1 will definitely accomplish what you want but it seems like the wrong application given what you say above. It's moreso a hardware backup rather than an efficient data backup. For example a server that needs to run 24/7 with no down time. Drive 0 fails then Mirror 1 will keep system functional until Drive 0 is replaced.
In your case it's a perfectly good waste of a 400GB drive. Especially if your drives are new.
If you have data corruption on 0 you also have it on 1. If you have a virus on 0 you have it on 1. If you delete data on 0... you deleted it on 1 also.
See what I mean you really have no "data" backup you have a "drive" backup.
You could get a good image compression backup program like Paragon or Acronis and do compressed snapshots of your Drive 0 and forget the RAID 1. This would allow dozens of snapshots to be stored on the second drive and would actually do you some good if you have a virus or accidental delete.

  • Which Raid Card?

Looking for some advice for a super quick Nehalem Mac Pro.
My thoughts are to buy 3 INTERNAL Seagate 15,000 rpm SAS drives.
Which Raid Card would best suit these from a price performance viewpoint

For the SSDs check the comparison at [http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=821&pageid=1]. I chosed the Crucial M225 ($320 at OWC).
For internal RAID cards see the reviews at BareFeats. I chosed the RockectRAID 4320.
Their drivers will come built-in in Snow Leopard according to HighPoint.
It is a powerfull controller with 2 internal MiniSAS ports. Each connect 4
SAS/SATA drives. For that you need an internal MiniSAS to (4x) SATA cable.
    NewEgg has it for $420.
This controller could be used for 2 SSDs and 4 internal hard drives.
    It has a 1.2MHz processor, supports RAID 0/1/3/5/6/10/50/JBOD, PCI-E x8
and even supports a batery backup module.
There is another option to install the SSDs inside the optical drive besides the
    2 mentionated above. [http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=2791]
This allows you to install 2 2.5" drives in the optical bay.
If you want to RAID the 4 internal drives, you will need one of 2 options.
    One from MaxUpgrades [http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product _id=189],
    or from TransIntl [http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=2784].
If you do not want to RAID the internal hard drives now or in the future, than
you should be able to find a cheeper internal controller. Again check BareFeats site.
    Hope it helps,

Update it from the original Apple ID or delete and redownload the applications when signed into another one; the second option may require repurchasing them.

    1. I have an iPod which has purchases synced with I tunes with an apple ID. I now have an iPad with a new ID for cloud. I have cloud storage capacity of 5gb which came with the iPad. How can I use one ID and store my existing music in cloud?

    HI Frostyfrog
CHeck out iTunes Match which has an annual fee of £21 or thereabouts. You can store a maximum of 25,000 songs there and they all become available on your other kit, iPhone, iPad and iPod. I know it works as I have over 23000 songs uploaded of which only a few we're bought through iTunes.
it works by comparing your music to the whole iTunes music dadata base so you access the same tunes that you could get from iTunes. If you have obscure stuff, it uploads your own music to the cloud as a copy.
I Find it incredible that on my iPhone with its 16gb memory I can view almost 200 gb of music (ie my 23000 songs) and play any of them. Anything I add to iTunes becomes available via the cloud fairly quickly from a few minutes or a little longer if adding a lot.
The first time you use it it will take quite a while to match your music if you have a lot, but after that it is all automatic. Read the stuff on the apple site. Your PC needs to be at least running Vista. I recommend it and at less than 50p a week it's good value.
    Good luck

Just sign into your own ID in Settings>iTunes & App Store. Sign out of the old ID and sign into your ID. I get the feeling though, that there is more to what you are trying to do or want to do and I'm not understanding or you are not explaining completely.
If this is a previously owned iPad, it should have been erased before you got possession of it.
