Which SAS 15k rpm internal audio hard disk for new MacPro running Logic Pro

For my new Logic MacPro machine, I'm planning to have a 7200 rpm drive for programs and a 300gb 15k rpm drive for audio.
Are there any other drives out there that I could buy which are as good (and quite) as the £510 one that Apple supply, but for a little less cash?
Cheers

Save your money on the 15k drive.. You won't need it. The SATA drives are plenty fast enough, unless you are wanting to stream HD vision along with your session, in which case another drive in one of the spare SATA bays will kick along just fine.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Help! Won't start without internal Audio hard drive

    So here's the issue.
I've been having some problems with my internal Audio hard drive where it will randomly un-mount and I think it might be causing crashes. Anyway, I decided I'd just take it out and use an external drive. When I did that and tried to restart, the computer just loses power. It tries to start and then just shuts off, I never even get anything on my screen.
If I reinstall the drive, the computer starts up.
Also, when I take the drive out, it refuses to start from an external drive or a dvd.
I've tried resetting the PRAM, the NVRAM and the Open Firmware with no results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Stephen

Yeah, there is. It seems to work fine when the second drive is hooked up and I've made sure it's set up as the boot drive in system preferences. The drive I'm using as the Audio drive is actually the original hard drive that came with the system and the boot drive is a newer SATA drive.
Also, while both internal drives are hooked up, the computer will start either from a DVD or an external hard drive no problem.

    Hi again sparkie1984,
I am glad that my earlier comments were helpful.
Obviously the Caviar Green access times would be slower than the Caviar Black, because the former is a 5,400rpm model.
However, having said that, the following review reports that "it still manages access times we'd expect from a 7,200rpm model", and gives it a 4.5 star rating:
    http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/storage/hard-disk-drives-h dd-/western-digital-caviar-green-2tb-587195/review
An earlier review also says much the same:
    http://www.trustedreviews.com/storage/review/2009/01/27/Western-Digital-Caviar-G reen-2TB/p1
Other reviews which might be of interest:

    http://alatest.co.uk/reviews/miscellaneous/western-digital-caviar-green-2tb-wd20 eads/po3-69735271,2/
The Caviar Green 2TB is currently available from Amazon UK for £142.76, with free delivery, which seems to be a competitive price, and is over £80 cheaper than the Caviar Black 2TB.
For more info on the differences between the 2 drives see:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=773
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=733
    According to Western Digital:
The Caviar Green is ideal for "Environmentally friendly PCs and external storage requiring lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation".
The Caviar Black is ideal for "Power computing applications such as multimedia, video and photo editing, and maxed out gaming computers".
So it is really a matter for you to decide whether the Caviar Green meets your criteria or not.
If in doubt, I would "dig deep in my purse" for the extra to buy the Caviar Black.
By the way all my WD drives are quiet in operation. Even the 10,000rpm VelociRaptors, whose "whirring away" is only really noticeable at start-up.
Whatever you decide, I hope that you are happy with your choice.

  • Format a windows hard disk for mac

    Hi,
I am trying to format an external windows hard disk for use with my new Mac.  I am using Disk Utility.  The disk was NTFS formatted, I erased it into HFS+ (mentioning that the operation was done in less than a minute).  I tried this many times but it still took the same time.  Does not formatting a disk take a long time? Or this is the way it is done in Lion.
    Thank you. (New to Mac)

Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.app (in Mac OS). Open the app.
Select the disk (choose 'erase' if it its formatted already), and format as 'Mac OS extended (journaled). Click 'format' (or 'erase', depending on which option you are given).

  • Separate hard disk for the appliance?

    Hi!
"Create a separate VMware hard disk for the appliance. This is the location where you will store your iPrint files.". Optional. Ok, I understand purpose for separate hard disk for Filr - user files etc., but what purpose does it serve here, with iPrint Appliance? Because, for backup is suggested to create a file and during new appliance install load it. Meaning, iPrint Appliance is probably ok to install in one? Probably is ok to keep all these files in ... general location? Or not? Didn't find anything of this optional disk in backup/restore, either.
    Probably I missed something.
    More thanks, Alar.

Ah, I see. Well I've not tried attaching a second disk at all to the
iPrint appliance so I'm not sure of the affects of adding one or
attempting to detach the second disk. Before detaching, take a look at
where it's mounted. I'm assuming it would still be mounted as
/vastorage, and if so look to see what if anything is stored there. If
it's truly empty then you could likely detach it as long as you also
remove the associated line in /etc/fstab which mounts the second disk.
If you see any files in that location, though, then you'd likely need
to redeploy the appliance from scratch making sure to not attach a
    second disk during deployment.

  • To hear your fans, quiet your hard disks for 5 cents

This isn't for everyone. You need a good airflow and you should never move the computer around.
Power off and unplug the power cable. Wait a little. Remove power and data cables from your hard disk(s), and take it(them) out.
Hopefully you saved the box in which your CD/DVD device or hard disk came in. Supposedly they were well tucked in between layers of plastic foam. Might be a better English word for it than plastic foam, but I think you understand. Place the plastic foam where you intend to keep the hard disk. You can cut it too any size you want. Reattach power and data cable to the hard disk and put it on the foam.
If you have long cables you might be able to put it on the case's floor, a very good place. A hard disk compartment (3,5 inch) or the floor of the compartment meant of CD/DVD-devices (5,25 inch) will also work. But since there will not be much airflow from below the disk, it is good to keep it in a cool place, normally the case floor. Like said, be careful when moving the case.

Everything I've read says that that won't work because I have the RAID card.
Sounds like I'm out of luck, if BootCamp can't be installed on a SATA drive not connected to one of the original 4 bays.
Also, I'm concerned about taking the RAID drives out (I'd have to take all 4 out or it corrupts the RAID setup when I stick the one back in) then putting them back in and having everything return to an All Good status.

  • I want my AVI files from Hard disk for FMLE

Is it possible to get AVI files from my Hard disk for FMLE if yes How..?
    Thanks in advance

Not sure what you mean but if you want to use FMLE to stream video from your harddrive I think you also need Camtwist or Wirecast for that. I use Camtwist and FMLE for that. If you for example stream to Justin.tv remember to mute the sound on your channel there or you get a strange loop. It´s kind of tricky to set up a good stereosound for broadcasting and I use two soundcards and a small cheap Behringer mixer for that.
I think it´s possible to play them back from another computer too if the videocard on that computer have some sort of video out port you can hook up to your capture card on your broadcasting computer. You ´d need a capturecard that FMLE recognizes.
You can also just burn a DVD and play it back from an ordinary external DVD player that you hook up to your capturecard. Even works with a VCR if you have one and can get the files over to tape. But as I said you need a good capturecard that FMLE recognizes.

  • Fastest and best external hard disks for video use with Imac?

What is the fastest and best external hard disks for video use with Imac (I believe it is currently not possible to use Esata on the Imac).

For DVCam. HDV etc, I'm a fan of the G-raid drives. From personal experience they
are very solid performers. I only had one issue with a new drive that was replaced
next day. They are not the cheapest drives to be found but the build quality
    is excellent. Check out:

  • Where could I buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A)

Does anyone know where I could buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A) (mid 2009)? The hard drives sold in Apple Store are not for macbook pro... Thanks a lot!

At one time Apple use to put an Apple firmware on the drives installed into Mac computer. That is not the case anymore. And even if they did that firmware was just to indentify the drive as an Apple drive. Those same drives would work in any computer and any drive would work in a Mac computer. Same is true today. There are NO Apple Mac drives. Apple uses the exact same drives as any other computer.
Apple uses the exact same hardware as all other computers. Same CPU, GPU, RAM, Drives, DVD drives you name it, it is the same as any PC.
Good Luck but just because you go to a Mac-centric store doesn't mean it is any different then what you would buy some place else, other then it may cost more from one of those Mac-centric places.

Thanks. According to my previous experience with an old white macbook, there might exist some compatibility problems for the hardware I bought from computer parts store...That's why I want to find an official retail store or reseller.... Thanks anyway!

  • HT201250 if I used external hard disk for backup time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

If I used external hard disk for back up time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do this, but you should make a new volume on your external disk. Time Machine needs a volume that is only used to store backups, so you can't store other data in the same volume as the one you are using for making backups.
If you want to create another volume on your external disk, use Disk Utility to do this > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Anyway, you should get another external disk to store other files, but if you don't want to, you can create another volume in it
