Which Service Diagnostics for Dual Core 2.3?

Hey there, any idea what version of Apple service diagnostics work with 2.3 Dual Core G5?

Hi, not positive, but I think the Dual Core ones use ASD 2.6.3

  • Is Logic 8 not optimized for dual core processing duties ?

Running MacBook Pro 2.4 ghz, 2 gig Ram 200 gig HD external eSATA or FW 800. No other apps running.
I am consistently seeing Logic 8 use ALL of the first core and barely tough the other - sometimes freezing up - saying that the CPU(s?) can not handle the audio. Why do I not see the other core "bailing water" for the first core ? Isn't this the purpose of dual core ?. It is like one guy is lifting a 150lb sac and his partner is sitting there eating lunch - and the "team"'s efforts fail.
Is Logic itself not optimized for dual core processing duties ?

I get beachballs just logging in. No apps - then Safari is also very buggy. I have had to "pull the battery out" more times than I would like to recount.
That sounds very suspect, like there is something wrong with the hardware or your OS install. I have a MBP 2.33 and have none of the Logic or other system problems you describe. Have you looked at your System Profiler to make sure both sticks of Ram are being recognized? If one stick is bad and you're only utilizing 1 gig, that would cause slow downs and spiny beachball with Leopard and with Logic. Try running hardware test from your system disks, and also try running Rember, a small app that will run a series of read/write tests on the Ram, incase one stick has a bad sector.
If that comes up with nothing, I'd try setting up a new user, logging in to that user, and seeing if you're having the same slow down problems with Leopard, Safari, Logic, etc. If not, then you have some corrupt files in your User system somewhere. Whether that works or not, the next step would be to back up all of your data and do an Erase and Install.
Finally, if you have specific problems that you can recreate, you could also take the machine to Apple if you still have a warranty, and perhaps they can figure out your performance issues.
    Good Luck!

  • Is it worth recompiling for dual core?

I've just bought a new pc with dual core. Is it worth building none/some/all apps from source to take advantage of the second processor?
My guess is only some apps will benefit from having two processors, things like multimedia, can anyone confirm?

In answer to your first question, programs that support SMP (symmetric multiprocessing--the use of multiple cores/CPUs) should not need to be recompiled with a different ./configure flag (e.g. /var/abs/extra/gimp/PKGBUILD says that the GIMP is compiled with --enable-mp by default on Arch). However, modern CPUs (whether multi-core or not) support various optimizations (specific to each CPU) that may improve performance beyond Arch's default CFLAGS, which on i686 is CFLAGS="-march=i686 -mtune=generic -O2 -pipe". Using ABS, you can recompile [core], [extra], [community], and [testing] packages with your own CFLAGS, which you should probably copy from the wiki according to your specific CPU. Just note that you probably won't notice much of a difference in performance, if any, from Arch's default CFLAGS, so I don't recommend recompiling all your software from source. Let me refer you to CRUX or Gentoo if you want to follow that road. Of course, you should still set CPU-specific CFLAGS in your /etc/makepkg.conf because they apply to the AUR as well as ABS. While it's probably not worth recompiling all your software just to optimize a little bit further, you might as well optimize your AUR builds since you have to compile from source anyway.
In answer to your second question, yes you should use MAKEFLAGS="-j3". I've never had a program fail to compile because of make -j3, and it almost doubles the speed of compilation. Definitely use it. Actually, according to this, MAKEFLAGS="-j2" might be slightly faster, but I've always followed the convention of adding 1 to the number of processors or cores.

  • Is the ATI Radeon X1900 xtMac G5 only for dual cores?

I have an old G5 single and I was wondering if this card could be used with it.

Yes, that card (more accurately the X1900GT - the XT was for the Mac Pro only) is a PCI Express card, and only the dual core (Late 2005) G5s have those slots.

  • Hitachi Deskstar 7K500/Maxtor DiamondMax 11, which is better for dual 2.5?

I am looking for a 500gb second HD for my dual 2.5 and was wondering which of these drives works best for my computer. Also where is a good place to get them?

    They're both excellent drives.
I can speak for the new Maxtor because I have one, only problem is I can't tell you if it works inside the G5. There's been a number of problems with the latest drives and G5's. It's a serious problem that's going to explode soon if Apple doesn't fix the onboard SATA issues of late.
My Maxtor 500 lives in a eSATA enclosure and it's the fastest drive I own after the Raptors. It's even faster than its smaller brother, the 300Gb Diamondmax 10. It easily defeated all four of my other Diamondmax 10's in a series of benchmarks.
As for the Hitachi, I heard nothing but really nice things about them at Macworld last month.
Also of note, the Hitachi has 5 platters, the Maxtor only has 4. So that might come into play for less heat with the Maxtor along with acoustics and so on...
Another consideration, I've had Seagate, Western Digital and Maxtors fail on me. But I've never lost an IBM/Hitachi drive. I have a 5 yr old DeskStar that's still crunching data away still today...
    G5 dual 2.7, Quicksilver 2002, G4 (2001) Digital Audio 933*, TiBook 400 and a G3 Mac OS X (10.4.5) over 5TB's and counting...Raptors 150 & 74, etc..

  • V20z:upgraded bios for dual-core support, lsi SCSI no longer works.

I upgraded the firmware of my v20z to latest available(2.4.0.14) to gain support for some AMD 275 processors. Prior to upgrade system was running w2k3 server and XP fine.
After upgrading the bios/processors the boot process stops when initializing the scsi controller, or if the disks are removed, when looking for OS. Boot from the diagnostic CD works fine, if no drives are installed. Dianostic CD hangs with a scsi bus error otherwise.
The problem seems to be that the onboard LSI SCSI controller does not configure the single installed drive correctly. When I attempt to change settings in the controller bios, I receive a message "Unable to save non volatile settings". Changing out drive for a newer drive causes no change. Downgrading to other available BIOS revisions causes no changes.
    any suggestions????

well it is almost the original state--I can't find the original bios for download. I also checked if LSI had a bios that I can flash to the adapter, and while they do, the flash procedure doesn't work. Probably because this is an integrated, and not standalone chip.
I do get the bios prompts, etc. I can go in and make changes, but I can't seem to make them save. I get "unable to save non-volatile settings".
I think I will check through the docs some more, and look for the download site for older bios

  • Best Motherboard for Dual Core with AGP?

  • Which dual core to buy ?

Which is the best option, Opteron 165 or X2 4200+ (considering that they cost the same) ?

Just one more doubt, will my current Mobo. cause problems while o/c 165
Looks like youré going to be fine with a 165 opteron in combination with your MoBo / bios.
I would recommend a hdd format / new Win XP SP2 installation to recognize both cores and get best performance.
There is an AMD dual-core driver and a MS hotfix as well that could be used if you´re experience any kind of instability.
PSU looks fine and should deliver stable power and not set any limit for your OC adventure.
Don´t know what mobo/cpu fluctation you can expect on the K8N SLi Platinum board, but I got some 0,03v on my K8N Neo2 and it still handle a stable decent OC on my 146 single opteron.
As for dual-core cpu, I have an X2 3800+ on a DFI LP NF4 mobo overclocked to 2700mhz prime95 stable with both cores. It is powered by a Tagan 480w like yours. The cpu fluctation is practically 0,0 when running OCCT test.
Starting OC you probably already know there´s some bios setting that usually needs to be changed.
HT 4x or 3x depending on what "FSB" that is used ( HT 4x up to 250 and HT 3x above 250 )
The 165 has a low 9 multiplier which means you probably need to run very high "FSB" and use the HT 3x option if your going for higher OC ( compared to the X2 4200+ that has a 11 multiplier ) and for memory setting you will probably need to use at least 166 divider or even lower depending on what memory quality you´ve got ( only says 2x512 in your sig.)
I would also recommend running memory at T2 setting for best stability if you´re aiming for the higher OC numbers.
    Then you have to find out what vcore ( ex.1.4v) and vdimm (ex.2.75v) that needs to be set for OC and some other things as well, but you could always read more about the details here ;

  • Maya 7 and graphics card for dual 2.3 ?

    Hello,
can anyone give me advise which graphics card and how much RAM I should get for the latest 2.3 G5? The applications I am going to use are:
Adobe After FX, Photoshop and Illustrator CS, Logic, Pro Tools, Flash MX2004, and Maya 7 Unlimited (with student reduction) and some other software, which should not be too disturbing.
I found this information about Maya, and am uncertain now which graphics cards could cause problems.
"Maya 7.0 IS NOT qualified on systems using an Nvidia GF4Ti graphics cards and higher. A problem exists where the Trax editor and Dopesheet editor do not draw properly and can lead to a kernel panic. DO NOT upgrade to 10.4.3 at this time if you have an Nvidia GF4Ti graphics card or higher. We are working with Apple to get this issue resolved as soon as possible."
For the rendering with Maya, I would like to aim for a high end graphics card, but would it work on my system? I am also uncertain, if Maya's student version is programmed for dual core processors, I know that the PLE version is not. It would be great, if someone who is using Maya 7 could tell me about their experience.
    Thanks
    Sprite on Stage

The best place to ask is on the Maya forums.
Maya is always having a problem with new hardware and Mac OS X updates, sometimes it's their fault and sometimes it's Apple's, so it's advised to not to update until they get their bugs worked out and you get the all clear sign from fellow more advanced Maya users.
Cloning your boot drive is a excellent way to "go back" in case a OS update breaks Maya.
I think the best hardware machine is a Quad, not a dual core. Dual cores are going to become standard across all computer lines here next year, from laptops to ordinary desktops just like single processors are now.
So for $800 more you get twice the amount of processors, triple the hardware life expectancy and you can continue to grow with Maya updates as they tax all four cores eventually. A Quad is cheaper per year than present dual cores so you'll save money not having to upgrade next year or so.
When you get your machine, I'm almost sure 10.4.3 will not be pre-installed, if it is you can wipe it and install 10.4 from Tiger disk and upgrade to 10.4.2 from Apple downloads page.
Get some RAM, Tiger overrides Photoshop CS2's RAM limit and gives great performance. The rest of Adobe apps need some work still to optimize for the hardware.

  • Dual-core Ivy Bridge and gcc -march

    Hi,
I wanted to give the ck-kernel a try, and, as indicated in the [repo-ck] wiki page I ran
    gcc -c -Q -march=native --help=target | grep march
to see what package is best for me. It says
    -march= corei7-avx
which is surprising, because, according to wiki, it corresponds to a Sandy Bridge processor. However my processor is an i7-3517U, which is a mobile dual-core Ivy Bridge processor.
    vendor_id : GenuineIntel
    cpu family : 6
    model : 58
    model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3517U CPU @ 1.90GHw
Any idea of what it's going on here?

@graysky Last week i noticed the same thing the OP did (I have a ivy i7 3770 though). However if you take a look at the [enabled] features from gcc -c -Q -march=native --help=target | grep enabled
    -m64 [enabled]
    -m80387 [enabled]
    -m96bit-long-double [enabled]

    -msse4.2 [enabled]
    -mssse3 [enabled]
    -mstackrealign [enabled]
    -mtls-direct-seg-refs [enabled]
All of the features that ivy bridge are supported are there MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AES, PCLMUL, FSGSBASE, RDRND and F16C.
I am unsure however if there are any other optimisations which occur differently between corei7-avx and core-avx-i as i am not going to try and understand the full inner workings of gcc.
However i did manage to patch gcc to enable core-avx-i support when asking for -march=native except that i am unsure of and repercussions of doing so https://github.com/crondog/misc-patches

  • MSI Dual Core Centre 2.0.1.0 (Fan Speed ALARM)

    Spec:
    MSI P965 Neo F v2.0
    Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo
    XFX-Nvidia 7800gt 256
    4 GB 800Mhz Ram
    Hi guys,
Anyone here know why the following would happen:
I use the MSI Dual Core Centre 2.0.1.0 for Windows XP... every so once in a while, the fan speed would drop to 0-RPM, and
a very irratating alarm would go off. This started to worry me, and I opened my side panel to look at the CPU Fan when the alarm goes off.
the Fan is turning at high velocity, but the alarm still goes off. Is there something wrong with this software ? or am I doing something wrong.
One minute it reports 2005-RPM, then it just shows 0-RPM, and the alarm goes off. My machine is about 2 months old.
Should I be making changes in the BIOS on the Mobo, to enable support for Dual Core Centre???
    Please help...very worried...
By the way "Speed Fan" reports no such alarms or CPU fan speed issues...
    What is going on ?

Not sure if this may work bc you reported fanspeed reaching zero.
On my system with 975XPUE, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 always runs below 1K rpm.  So I have to use a user profile with Fan Min set about 833 rpm to avoid the annoying alarm.
If you don't find any solution to the reported fanspeed reaching zero, you might be able to at least disable the alarm by setting Fan Min in DCC to 0 rpm.  That or uninstall DCC as suggested by most forum users.

  • Which is better for Pro Tools LE-PowerMac G5 Dual-Core 2.3Ghz or Dual 2.7Gh

I'm starting a small recording studio and I own a PowerMac G5 Dual-Core 2.3Ghz with 2GB of RAM and a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7Ghz with 2GB of RAM. I need to keep one of them to run Pro Tools LE. • Which is the last most stable version of Firefox for non-dual-core CPUs? Thanks.

I run a Dell Pentium 4. I found newer versions of Firefox to be deadly slow and extremely unreliable. I find 3.0.19 to be the last most stable version for non-dual core processors. Absolutely no problems. And no endless remoting. However, there is no further safety support for this version. Thus...
Which is the last most stable version of Firefox for older non-dual-core CPUs?
    Many thanks.

Thanks but this isn't what I need. I need a URL that directly downloads with wget so I can automate it. This takes you to a page that contains links. I'd have to scrape the page to find the one I want, and while that isn't impossible it is a huge over-complication for something that should really be pretty simple.

  • WHICH OPERTON DUAL CORE FOR K8N DIAMOD PLUS X16????

Okay all of you experts out their  I want to upgrade to a dual core Operton which would be better the 165 denmark or the 175 Denmark I really dont know anything about overclocking but I do wish to explore it when the weather cools down! But primarily I want to know what the difference of haveing the 165 multiplier at x9 and the 175 multi at 11x what is the difference I would like to overclock but only if it does not jepordize the stabillity of my system and I dont run the risk of data corruption so basically if you have the 165 denmark at 1.8 core what can you bring it to for a rock solid system with over clocking???? 2.0   2.2 what can I expect???? I want speed and rock hard stability as this is my only P.C I do alot of gameing multi tasking , burning music file transfering  can you overclock the 165 to 2.2 and leave it at that over clock permanently without data corruption? Or is the 175 Denmark the better choice with my memory???
Please help and thanks in advance........

I suppose that is true, as we all seem to have addictive personalities when it comes to this stuff! But regarless I still did not think that much of the dual core that I had before! Would have liked to get the 185 Operton buttttt well you know money. It's gonna be quite a while until they get the AM2 platform straightened out and stabilizeled I personally woul'nt touch that platform with a 10' pole right now! Besides I am quite happy with my 939 K8N Diamond Plus
this is the best system that I have ever owned probably because I built it myself I mean I dont even overclock right now and this thing is pumped on nitrous! Yhea one thing that I over looked was that they were out of stock on the opty that I bought at New Egg I called them this morning to see if i got lucky and kopped the last one but unfortunayely it looks like perhaps 10- 14 days before I get it and I cant change my order what a kick in the balls!!!!!

Not only would it be safe but less expensive as well.  The tray loaders are deemed to be the most reliable.  Apple does not support Blueray so avoid that.
    Ciao.
