Ross's advice is good, but you say you want to be able to get more creative, so it is worth a shot.
It is great that there is a free trial of FCP X, so you can try it out for 30 days.
FCP X is much more powerful than iMovie. I suggest you start by following a good introduction to the software, like the one at Izzy Video, that explains very clearly all you need to start on the right foot.
Once you get used to it, there is no turning back.

  • Which should I buy, the iPad mini with retina display or the iPad Air?

I Was thinking of buying an iPad but I'm not to sure which one to buy. They both have good reviews and they both look good but from anybody else's point of view which one would be better to buy?
    help?
    thankyou.

Depends upon what you will be using it for. If you expect to be doing a lot of on-screen typing then the larger iPad with the larger screen/keyboard may be better, if one of the main uses will be as an ebook reader then the smaller-lighter Mini might be better. I don't know what country that you are in but in the US the Mini is $100 cheaper, which could be used for a cases, apps, music etc
Do you have a local store that has both in so that you can try both ?

  • Which should I buy - MBP or MBA?

I live in Bahrain and so can't really order anything from the Apple store as they don't ship it to Bahrain. I have never used a Mac and would now like to transition from PC to Mac as I am totally in love with the iPhone 4s and the new iPad.
I am confused on which Mac I should get. I am keen on getting the MBP Retina display but not sure if I should go for the 2.3 or 2.6ghz. But then again I can't upgrade in future so was wondering if I should go in for the normal MBP 2.6ghz which works out to the same price as the MBP Retina 2.3ghz plus I can upgrade it in future if the need arises. But since I am not a professional photographer nor a video editor nor a graphic designer, I was wondering if I would need all that power? Should I just stick to a MacBook Air instead? I would be using it for everyday use like surfing the web, writing blogs, using iWorks or Office and even maybe the occasional use of Photoshop but only light use as I am not an expert in it. But whatever I choose I would like it to last me for a good 3-4 years at least!
Presently my heart is set on the MBP Retina 2.3ghz but looking at the price tag I am not sure if it's the right move. Please help me choose the right Mac for me.
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you all for your suggestions! I considered the 2.6Ghz regular MBP as it did cost the same price as the base model of the Retina MBP but after checking again and again on various websites, as well as apple.com, I realized that if I go for it I still end up with a max of 8GB RAM as it cannot be upgraded beyond that. What's the fun in that!?! The same hardware specs (other than the Ghz speed) are available in the base model Retina MBP but with a SSD drive (even though it's 1/3 the capacity).
Secondly, I have been using a Sony laptop with 4GB RAM for the past couple of years and to get a laptop with 8GB RAM would be great! I don't think I would upgrade beyond that anyway! Especially not for the applications that I plan on running on it... Again, I am not a photographer nor a graphic designer nor a video editor... Plus I have a 500GB HDD but I have barely exceeded 50% of it as I download a lot of movies. But once I transfer them to my portable HDD's I have a lot of free space left! So I think the base model for the Retina MBP would suit me fine with 2.3Ghz, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. I would love to go in for the 2.6Ghz version but unfortunately it is out of my budget. If I could afford that then I would definitely go in for the 16GB RAM as well! But my pockets aren't that deep and will have to settle for just the base model config.
    Thanks again everyone!

  • Which should I buy, 13 inch or 15 inch (Late 2013) for Graphic Design?

Hi! I'm in the market for a new laptop and after doing research for a month+ I've decided to go with a MacBook Pro (my first). The thing is, even after all my research (I've practically scoured the whole web), I can't figure out whether it's better for me to get the mid spec (2.4ghz/8gb/256gb) 13 inch rMBP, the low end 15 inch rmbp (2.0ghz/8gb/256gb), or the top spec 15 inch rMBP (2.3ghz/16gb/512gb). If I get the mid spec 13 inch or the low end 15 inch, I  will spring for the 16gb upgrade.
I was wondering if I could get the community's advice as to what is best suited for my needs. I'm thinking the 13 inch will be okay for me but I'm worried about the GPU not being able to handle what I need to do. I'm willing to spend the money for the $2599 model if I must, but if I don't need to spend that much on it, then I'd be happier. I don't want to spend on a laptop that's way more than what I need.
256gb space is more than enough for me, so ssd size is not a consideration.
Here is how I'll use it:
    - (Most probably multitasking these all at the same time)
    - Skype/Facetime/Instant Messengers
    - Web browsing (most commonly with around 30-40 tabs at a time)
    - Heavy Adobe Photoshop-10 hours 5 days a week (sometimes I also use Illustrator and Flash)
    - Video editing here and there (maybe once or twice weekly)
    - Streaming video/music OR playing music/video via iTunes or VLC
    - Some downloading here and there
    - Rarely, I'll also use it for word processing
I do a little gaming here and there, but most likely I'll only be playing Diablo III, Path of Exile, and Sims 3 (or 4 when it comes out), so I do need a computer that can handle it.
    Considerations:
    - I work at home so I'm not too concerned with the lessened portability of the 15 inch. I DO NOT want an iMac, please do not suggest that to me!
    - I'm on my computer almost 18 hours a day and will need a computer that can keep up
    - I'd like for the laptop to last me at least 4 years, since it's a big spend

Thanks! What I do want to know however is if the tasks I need to do can be handled without the dedicated video card? Also since I'm multitasking, is it better if I go for the quadcore?
I wish you could put a video card in the 13 inch. :/

  • Final Cut Studio or Adobe Production Premium Suite - which should we buy?

    Hi all
Upfront, I'm not trying to start any flame wars here. My design studio is for the first time investing in video hardware and software. Most of the stuff we'll be doing will be for use on the web or DVD.
I'm not an expert on video so I'm just trying to get some useful opinions on the relative merits of Final Cut Studio and Adobe Production Premium Suite. We're entirely Mac based, so we have the choice of either.
Any thoughts and recommendations most welcome.
PS I'll be posting this exact question on the Adobe forums also.

    hey there mpjx,
since this is an Apple Discussion, i'm inclined to say FCS.... it's less expensive & is complete solution start to finish for movie making, but you may want/need to get After Effects & other Adobe products to work w/ Flash media. however Adobe CS includes After Effects, Illustrator & some other things for working w/ Flash media. so get what may provide the most bang for your budget.... if you don't need everything in Adobe CS, go FCS & get the Adobe products(Illustrator, After Effects, etc...) you want/need as it occurs.
    good luck.

  • Which should i buy? Macbook air or pro?

Hi, I have a macbook 2009 that is crashing and need a new laptop.  I love that the Air is light and I do lots of basic family pictures and videos and store on my laptop. I will miss the dvd player if I upgrade but really would like a lighter weight laptop for travel.  Anyone have had both the pro and air and can advise?  I am going to get a 13 inch one.
    Thanks!

Yes, I have the Macbook Pro and Air,....the new Pro doesnt have a DVD player anymore either,...so..
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics.
....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"

  • Should I buy GeForce 6600 PCI Express or Radeon X300 PCI Express???

Which should I buy GeForce 6600 PCI Express or Radeon X300??? The GeForce 6600 PCI Express is more expensive and I dont know if it has a Programable Pixel Shader. ANYONE COULD YOU HELP ME WITH MY DECISION??

Definitely not the X300, it is not worth it.
Look to the 6600, but beware, users have reported problems with the 6600 series cards and the heatsink lately so it may be wise to look at all your options before you make a choice. Try looking at other forums and steer clear of manufacturer's support forums as they can be biased and content has to be moderated more.
    Good luck

  • Should I buy an iPad 2 or new iPad?

This will be my first iPad purchase and I'm torn between the two. I'll mostly be using it for browsing the Internet, watching shows from netflix or hulu & some games.  I'm thinking that 16GB would be enough since I don't plan on putting much music or movies on the iPad, but after reading some reviews, it sounds like I may need more since Apps will be taking up more room to accommodate the new iPad's display. Now I'm torn between the new iPad vs. iPad2 and 16GB vs. 32GB. Another question I have is, does the iCloud store some music, downloads etc to clear up more space on the iPad? I'm also thinking if I buy the iPad2, I may get a refurbished one, has anyone had any problems with those? Who knew this decision could be so hard! Any input would be appreciated
    Thank you!

  • Which NI devices should I buy and how to start with?

    Greetings!
I am an undergraduate who is trying to design a control system which can measure chemical solution conductivity as well as PH value; besides, based on those values, we need to control 4 valves to open and close so that acid, base, water, and salt from 4 tanks can flow into the main pipe.
Question: Which NI device should I buy and start with? The devices have to have at least 4 input/output, do you have any suggestion, Thank you very much!!
I am also new to LabVIEW, so any extra suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you , we are considering purchasing NI USB-6008
    http://www.ni.com/products/usb-6008/
Doest it work with the following PH sensor, one specification says that it has output voltage of Output 0-5 vdc, does NI USB-6008 accept it?
    Model A1004 pH Transmitter
    Warning
Do not short the power connections. Wrong wiring of the signal and power wires will result in
permanent damage to the unit instantly.
    Specs:
    Range 0-14pH
    Power: 12vdc 500ma nominal
    Output 0-5 vdc
    Material ABS
    Calibration trim pots
    Distance up to 50ft
Model A1004 is a pH transmitter designed to be used with PLCs and microprocessors that accept
    analog input of 0-5vdc.
Connect any general purpose pH sensor to the transmitter. Double junction sensor is preferred.
Calibrate unit with 4 and 7 pH buffer solutions. Use zero trim pot to adjust 4pH and span trim pot to
adjust 7pH..Fine tune adjustment is done with span trim pot.
If you do not have a sensor , short the bnc connector ,this will simulate 7pH and observe output voltage
    of 2.5vdc.
Din connector provides power and signal from one cable.
Note.: When connecting signal and ground to the PLC input ,use .01uf capacitor across signal
and ground to filter any noise issues.

Depends on how you want to use it. Flash storage on the newer macbook and macbook air are built in. A macbook air is the most light weight and a very good machine. It will do all you want it to do unless you are running some very intensive programs. If you go to the apple store on line you can compare  the different macbook pro" and macbook Air's.

  • Which iPad Retina should I buy in the US so it will work in the UK?

I am going to the States next month and want to buy the new iPad there.  Which iPad Retina should I buy in the US so it will work in the UK, the AT&T or Verizon model? I'm probably staying with O2, but can't tell if different models are sold in the UK, or if its just the one.  If just the one, I can't find which model number it is for the UK. The apple store website isn't exactly clear on which model(s) is/are sold in the UK.

    Hi,
We don't have cellular, but I have often read many ques. and answers here just for my own info when we were first buying. I do know that in the past, Verizon had a different system than ATT and others. That could all have changed with LTE. I checked a couple of articles and found the following links which might help you. PLEASE NOTE these were published in March and May of 2012, so things might have changed with the new ipad 4. Also note that you can buy a cellular here without a contract that you could then set up with your own UK phone company.

You also said you wanted retina display and then said you were probably staying with 02. If by that you mean the ipad 2, I want to let you know that the ipad 2 does NOT have the retina display. That would mean you'd have to get the old discontinued 'new' ipad or the ipad 4. And if I were you, I would not even think of buying an old 'new ipad, even if there's a great sale on them. I'd go straight to the ipad 4.
Make sure you do as much research as possible.
    Hope this helps.

  • Which Itouch should I buy?

This is my first post so please bare with me. I know next to nothing about the itouch and am trying to decide which one to buy for my wife. She has an old Sony Clie (Palm OS)she used for the calendar, contacts and storing medical programs but it just died. Many of her piers use either the iphone or itouch but since we are on Verizon the iphone is not an option. She is not interested in loading music, nor would she be interested in too many apps. Her main intrest would be the Calendar, Contacts and Epocrates. I'm sure she will take advantage of the wireless for maybe some emailing and facebook but not much else. I thought the 8gb would be fine but want to make sure that is the right choice for her or should I step up to the 32gb. So obviously, I could use some direction from those who are the experts. I would really appreciate anyones advice. Thanks

when your wife needs multitasking and homescreen wallpaper buy the 32GB itouch its´s much faster than the 8GB itouch the 32GB itouch is as fast as the iphone 3Gs you can surfing with the safari browser faster too i had bought the 8GB first because ithink i would´t buy much apps but when you start downloading apps you want more and more because there are muh pretty useful apps in the app store so i boght an 32GB itouch after 6 months using the 8GB i wuld be wait because some bloggers says that in september come out a new itouch what is like the iphone 4 with retina display, gyroscope, camera and 512mb ram so its much faster than the actually itouch 32GB

  • Which laptop should I buy?

I am going to a boarding high school... I have a couple old macs and need a new one for school. Ideally about $1500 or less, a little over is okay. I should only use mail, safari, calendar, firstclass, a little photoshop, watch movies, skype, word, itunes, play some games (im not a big gamer, but maybe a little minecraft or something), dropbox, chrome. I'm okay if its a little slow or freezes occasionally, it just has to meet basic needs. Besides that - there is a chance I would install windows 8.
Should I buy an air or a pro? And with which configs? I don't think I want the 11' screen, but if anyone is in a similar situation, screen size reccomendation is helpful. Besides that - anyone reccomend a wireless kayboard, trackpad, or mouse? Maybe one of those thunder display things? Should I buy an apple drive? Basically besides computer adivce, I want accessory advice.
*Note: I know its under macbook discussion, thats because it made me pick a category*

For a savings of 15% to 30% look at the Refurbished Mac page. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac  They all come with the full year warranty and you can buy Apple Care for them.
Time Machine will work with any external hard drive. No need to pay the Apple premium.
