many thanks

If, despite all advice to the contrary, you still go for the MacBook Pro then I'd recommend the base 17” MacBook Pro (MBP) configuration, with 160GB 5400 RPM hard disc option, and an additional 1 GB RAM (to make 3 GB total).
Why the 17” model?
Because when editing you need as much screen space as possible. Yes, it is bigger and heavier than the 15”, but I think that it’s larger and higher resolution display is worth that sacrifice.
Why the bigger but slower 160GB 5400 RPM hard disc option?
Laptop drives already have a much smaller capacity than their desktop cousins and those little drives, inevitably, fill up quickly with all your stuff!
And of course, you're planning to get an external media drive too, right? If you don’t have one then your internal disc will be eaten up by clip media in no time (especially if you opted for the smaller faster internal disc).
Why 3 GB RAM?
Well OK, thats an expensive option, but seriously, if you can afford it the money is well spent.
I'd also strongly recommend the extended AppleCare Protection Plan.

Some of my earliest photos are not showing on my phone5 after updating to iOS7. They can be seen in the app "over" which allows for art and lettering to be placed on a photo but I cannot find an album or year for photos before 2012 (in the photo app). The iphone says the photo content is there when I check in "about" under general in settings. So the pictures seem to be somewhere but I just can't access from from the photo app. Any suggestions. I also know that they were there before the iOS7 upgrade as I was looking for a pre 2012 picture last week and it we there.

  • How do you determine which apps are paid and which are free

I am trying to perform some cleaning of my iPhone and want to delete some apps.  I know which ones to delete, and which ones to save, but never want to delete an app that I have paid for.
How can I tell, either on the phone itself, or within iTunes, which apps were paid for, and which were free?  They all show a purchased date in "get info" within iTunes, even apps that were free. I know some apps that I certainly paid .99 for, and some that I have paid much more than that.  I would never want to delete those.  How can I tell the difference?

Ok, keep in mind, this is iTunes app store, not Desktop App Store, just so we are on the same page.  I have a purchase history that looks like this:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/340087/drops/01.02.12/this-f0-154400.png
If I go to the app Store, locate the exact app in question, this is what I get:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/340087/drops/01.02.12/ss-2012.01.02-3.45.23.PM-57-154549 .png
Compare that to an app I did made a purchase to, Geocacging, and it is different. As you can see, it tells me that I can download it again, for free, and this is in no way a free app, quite expensive compared to most 99 cent apps:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/340087/drops/01.02.12/ss-2012.01.02-3.46.56.PM-c4-154716 .png
I am logged into lCloud as far as I know. Here is a screen shot from system prefs:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/340087/drops/01.02.12/ss-2012.01.02-3.49.06.PM-7d-154932 .png
It says "sign out" which tells me I am logged in.
I don't have an app within the apps section of itunes of the apps section of my phone when connectted by wireless of by usb cable.
So unles I am completely mising your instructions, I believe this to be on Apple's end, and they are not recognixing that I have already downloaded this app and paid for it.  I am about to just download and pay for it again, it is only 3.99, so not a big deal, however, if this was a 100.00 GPA app or smilar, I would be a little upset.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • How can we differ which is a fact and which is a dimension?

    Hi All,
I'm a new bee to OBIEE...
If any one can help me out or provide me a link...
if we have multiple facts and dimensions? How can we differ which is a fact and which is a dimension?
    Thnkx in Advance.

    Hi ,
You can identify the facts and Dimension based on the data.
    You have to analyze.
Generaly the Table with measure column (Max column in the table) we will consider as Fact.
    Table with attribute as Dimensions.
For the Facts we can apply the aggregate rules.

  • How do I set-up my memory amount for max speed for FCP and Motion

Hey all, I have a Dual 2.3 G5 with (8 Gigs) Ram. I'm working with a new client. I want to set up my memory or whatever else to provide MAXIMUM processing power for FCP and MOTION. Does anyone have any recommended settings. I've maxed-our RAM. My card is (ATI Radeon 9600-128MB of VRAM)
Is there a setting in FCP that allows more processing power to be applied to that application ?
    Appreciate any replies

Most of FCP's speed in performing functions is directly related to processor speed. The only way to increase performance would be to use a Mac with faster processors. Performance is also related to data throughput, so if you're working with high data rate video formats, a fast RAID and/or SATA (or eSATA) media storage solution would help.
The exception to FCP performance is when rendering/processing FX Plugs; they are dependent on the power of the graphics card.
Motion is mostly dependent on the power of the graphics card.
There is no way that I'm aware of that you can speed up RAM. Having the extra RAM will just mean that you can successfully work with more applications open at the same time.

  • Which Mac for FCP budget-minded

I'm really excited to join your group...being a current user of "other" brands of PC and editors and want to switch to FCP.
Heading to the Apple store today so I can start using FCP. Which Mac is recommended for FCP to edit small features, shorts, music vids, et al.
    Choices =
iMAC 24 fully config'd (great screen, but not really portable)
Macbook Pro 17 (portable but smaller screen)...and if so, the 100gb 7200 disk or is the 160gb 5400 disk ok for a boot drive.
    Can't afford a Mac Pro.

  • Which keyboard for FCP?

I was a video editor years ago for a local TV news station and the extent of my editing was with 2 BETA-SP machines and a cuts-only "controller" (remember the kind with a shuttle/jog wheel on each side that you'd bang on and spin with one finger to get to the frame you were looking for?).
Years later, I'm just starting to get my feet wet with FCP6 and am missing my old shuttle/jog wheels.
Are there any special keyboards or separate controllers out there with shuttle/jog wheels that are well-suited for Final Cut?
    Jason

I use the Bella 5102 EZ Keyboard for FCP, which has a "jog/shuttle" control, which is just a tactile J,K,L (shuttle) and left/right arrow (jog) controller. It doesn't respond in the same manner as an actual controller, but I do find myself using the "shuttle" occasionally (out of habit).
If you want more functionality/customizability, check out the JL Cooper MCS3 SP USB controller, but it also uses keyboard commands (and is like $800!).
I'm not sure FCP can even be controlled with the same response as an edit controller, since the controller functions refer to keyboard commands.

  • Which laptop for FCP?

    Hi guys,
Sorting a mobile FCP kit out for a friend - think we'll go for a 15" Macbook Pro with an external screen to hook up when she's working at home.
    BUT: should we get
    a) 2.2GHz chip, 120GB hdd, 128MB video ram
or b) 2.4 GHz chip, 160GB hdd, 256MB video ram
I don't think anyone would spot the difference in clock speed without a stopwatch, I wouldn't be bothered about the hard disk size given that all the media will be on external drives, so it comes down to the video ram.
What practical difference will having the extra video ram make? And would it be worth the extra £300/$500?
    any thoughts really welcome
    cheers

    go with b)
as for the video ram, FCP is not GPU dependent so at this time FCP itself will see little direct benefit although it is beginning to use FxPlug's which can and do use the video card ( and that trend is likely to continue ). of course, the extra power will help drive her second monitor as and when that gets plugged in. also, if your friend has any intention of ever using Motion then she definitely wants the better video card as that app is very much GPU dependent ... and don't forget that later on, if she changes he goals, you can easily upgrade the RAM and (less easily) the HD, but you can't upgrade the video card at all.
elitist mode on: personally I wouldn't consider a 15" for any serious editing at all as the screen just doesn't have the real estate for FCP's interface... I'd go with the 17" MBP w/ 2GB RAM minimum (pref. 4GB) and the 256MB SDRAM video card option

  • Best Camcorder For FCP and FCE

Right, so I have a rough budget of £500 and I need the best camcorder I can get for money. It must be compatible with FCP and Express. Can anyone out there help me with my predicament??
    Many Thanks

Better information, you'll get better responses over the next few days, keep reading.
Best for me includes excellent low light functions and excellent glass. I need neither digital zoom nor auto gain.
Decide on an acquisition format by determining what you expect to do with the movies you create. You may not need full 1080 but can get by with 720. Resist cameras that record in a codec that must be transcoded before editing.

  • Can i buy a lens which suits for portraits and macro photography?

    I have a 600D canon.
I want to buy a lens that can work both for portraits and also for macro. Is it possible?
Budget is approx. 400 $. Max stretch to 600$
I was recommended 50 mm f1.8 for portraits.
Will it also work as a macro lens?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Macro lens can be a wonderful portrait lens. I've used mostly macro lens for portrait. Like Skirball said, 100mm is long for indoor portrait.

  • Info please...control surface and mixer for fcp and audio recording

i'm looking for a control surface for final cut pro and also xlr/line inputs for recording guitar and vocals in cubase or audacity.
read all the info here after numerous searches. still some questions.
was looking at the tascam 1082 but not sure of the build quality...i saw one and it looked a bit cheaply built. the two demos at guitar center were falling apart. didn't look nearly as well built as the mackie. also i have been reading here and elsewhere about bugs/problems etc.
was looking at the m-audio...not sure about that one...$1250...
was also looking at mackie control surface...but no firewire...how do you hook it up to a mac? also no audio inputs. what would i need to buy to work in conjunction with that for recording audio? if i bought the mackie, i'd still have to buy an audio inpur device and that would end up costing as much as the m audio.
i know i could just buy a mixer for recording and forget the control surface...i already have a shuttle pro which works fine and i have gotten used to using the mixer in fcp...no problems. but the motorized faders on a control surface sure would be nice
    so questions:
how does the mackie connect to a mac and what other device(s) would i need to record audio and how would they hook up...would they play nice together?
ppl who own the tascam...happy with it? used the mic and line preamps? are they noisy?
do i need an additional firewire bus reguardless of which control surface i get?
how does one route the audio for these when in fcp? i currently route my audio through my dsr 11 deck. will the control surface just go through firewire or would i have to actually jack into the control surface with additional cables and have to remove my present cables from my speakers everytime i want to use the control surface?
sorry so many questions. it's really tough to make an informed decision in buying something if you don't understand the mechanics of it.
btw, appreciate the info so far that i found doing my searches.
    thanks
    carl

I've got the Tascam FW1082 and I absolutely love it. I can't believe I ever edited without it. I'm considering upgrading to the 1884 in the future.
As for the mic preamps, they sound great. Nice and clean. There's no such thing as a line preamp, but the line inputs are clean as well.
For routing, I go to the 1082 via firewire until I turn on my external video monitor, at which point I send both video & audio to the deck and route the audio from the deck into a pair of the mixer's analog inputs. That way you avoid the delay of external monitoring. The 1082 allows you to listen to both the computer & the inputs at the same time, so switching back and forth is seamless.
As for durability, I've had it out on a few location recordings, but most of the time it's on my desk. It's still in mint condition. I'm sure if it was on a display where any 10 year old could come mess with it, it wouldn't be in as great of shape, but then again, a Neve console wouldn't look that great if every little brat that walked in the door could play with it. If you take care of your stuff, you'll have no issues with this mixer.

  • Macbook Pro Specs for FCP

I am a pro photographer interested in working with video. I have 2 questions:
    1. Best way/forum to learn FCP?
    2. Ideal specs on Macbook Pro for FCP?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

The specs are clearly listed in the FCP marketing pages. They are conservative and you will need external drives.
There is no best way to learn an application as deep and complex as a video editor. You explore the net, buy some books, decide what your level of competence needs to be in order to bill your clients.
There is a direct comparison to your chosen profession. How did you learn to be a professional photographer? There's more to taking pictures than having decent equipment and known how to launch Photoshop. I started shooting when I was 11 years old in 1965 and I needed 15 years to become adept with the physics of light and the chemistry of film. Digital shooters, generally, have no clue about how their tools work. How does one teach them?

  • Which mac to keep and which to sell?

I Inherited a 27" imac 2.66ghz i5 but I have a mac mini 2.33 ghz i7.  Which one should I keep?  I don't really used much software that taxes my computer. The most taxing thing I do with it is play MMOs.
    Thanks for any advice.

We would have absolutely no idea. Why not keep both for awhile and see which one gets the most use and then part with the other.

  • I just put 8 gb of memory into my new mini, but the computer is only reading 4gb. It tells me that bank 0 has 4 gb and that bank 1 is empty. Which slot is "o" and which slot is "1" ? I re-wiggled the new memory sticks, but it still only reads one of them.

I just added two new memory sticks to my new mac mini, each stick has 4 gb. The computer tells me that it now (with the new memory) only has 4 gb total, however. It says that bank "O" had 4 gb and bank "1" is empty. My two questions are... Which slot is bank o and which slot is bank 1? The computer didn't beep or anything, so I think its just that it doesn't recognize one card. I wiggled them again, in case maybe I didn't put them in tight or something, to no effect. Any suggestions on what I may not have done right???

Same issue here. All chips, old and new working in bottom slot 0 but nothing working in slot 1 (top.)
It also seems to be important to make the insertion at the right angle that was actually steeper than I thought at first. I also got a nice click when it slipped into place. You can also look at the position of the center slot/protrusion on the bottom chip to get an idea of how far the stick needs to be in.
Another thread pointed out that you have to make sure that the retaining clips don't engage before you get it into place as they prevent further movement.

  • Server Specs for SLES and GW 12

I need to look into a new server to put SLES and GroupWise 2012 on it. I am having trouble finding server specs for this, so I was hoping to get a little advice. GW will be the only thing on this box, one PO with about 150 users. Hoping to build something or purchase something that isn't too expensive due to budget restraints.
    Thanks

I work for a small non profit organization and we only have one server, never found the need for virtualized servers.

If this is going to be a dedicated physical setup (you are not planning
to run GroupWise on a virtualised server) you should not need a big
budget to find a decent server for those 150 users.
IMO, a dual core CPU with 4 GB of RAM would seem quite sufficient in
this case. Getting a proper disk controller (with a true hardware raid
handling if you are looking for a raid setup) & decent disks that can
handle the I/O required is important too.
The A brand entry level servers that I've seen easily meat this
requirement. Do make sure it's suitable for 64bit.
In any case, GroupWise 2012 has about the same requirements version 8
    would demand.
I'm curious, you are not already virtualising servers?
