Which ssd for my macbook pro?

Hi community.
I have a Macbook pro 13" model number A1278 which is now running 8gb of Kingston memeory and I was thinking of upgrading the drive to an ssd. I want to continue with the Kingston brand and would like to go pretty big in capacity, hopefully future proof as much as I can. Anyone tell me which one or maybe a website where can I go to get the right ssd for this particular model?
Many thanks.

I know you said you're thinking of Kingston, but I really have to recommend OWC's SSDs:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/
I've been using a 120GB Electra for a while now and it's fantastic.  You'll find that their SSDs are very well reviewed, especially when it comes to their ability to maintain consistent speeds over their lifetime.  And as for future-proofing: they're all SATA3, and come in sizes up to 1TB.
Of course, if you want a Kingston, I'm sure you'll find one that meets your needs.  SSDreview.com has reviewed several of their drives in the past few months.
HTH.

  • What's the best SSD for a Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2010?

    Hello.
I will upgrade my 2010 Macbook Pro. I need to know what's the best SSD for my Macbook Pro. I was thinking about those:
    - Kingston SSDNow V+200 (SVP200S37A/120G) - 120 GB
    - CRUCIAL SSD M4 128 GB
    - CORSAIR SSD  Force Series GS 128 GB
    - SAMSUNG SSD 840 Series Basic 2.5" - 120 GB (MZ-7TD120BW)
    - CRUCIAL SSD interno Crucial v4 - 128 GB
Those are the easiest to find on Portugal.

It is my understanding that SATA III is backwards compatible to SATA II so that should not be an issue for your selection process.
As an aside, you might be interested to know that your MBP can now have 16 GB RAM installed.

  • I wanna buy an SSD for mid2012 macbook pro 13' i7! Help with sizes eh?

So I really wanna get an SSD for my macbook pro 13' mid2012 (not retina), and I know where I can get help to install it, but I dont know what dimensions of  the ssd has to be. I never use my dvd drive, and I saw somewhere you can replace it with and SSD or other hard drive. Now first question: Is the SATA cable to the dvd drive only 3.0Gbit/s or is it 6.0Gbit/s so an ssd could run on full speed?
And then dimensions, the ssd I have been looking at is the '
    'SSD 180GB Intel 520 OEM'
(link to my local computer shop: http://www.inet.se/produkt/4304354/ssd-180gb-intel-520-oem (swedish))
Now is it the right size or do I have to get some sort of converter or holder, or will it even fit at all?
If you know any good SSD's that are good, not toooo expensive and fits into my macbook pro, I would love to see them

Visit OWC for alternatives. You want one that supports 6.0 Gb/s SATA III. It should be a 2.5" notebook sized drive. At OWC look at their Mercury 6G models.

  • Best SSD for 2009 Macbook Pro?

    Hi
I am looking to upgrading my Macbook Pro 2009 2.53 GHz processor and 8GB RAM.
The planned upgrade this time is an SSD.
I think I want a 120-128GB SSD. It will fit the Lion OS and applications and some application content as well. May be my photos and Aperture and my documents folder which I access the most frequently.
Question I have and one that I have not managed to answer after some research even, is that SSD is the best one for the Mac. And what SSD is the best bang for the buck.
TRIM - I gathered from my research that this is a good capability to have, but Mac OS does not support it natively.
I am not eager to do anything that tinkers with the OS settings etc. Opening the machine and installing this in place of the CD ROM will be enough of an adventure for me
    Will appreciate advice. Thank you!

Great question. I have the same machine, though I'm looking for a 250gig SSD. Right now, it seems like a shootout between OCZ and OWC. I'd like other users' experiences with compatible SSD drives.

  • HDD vs SSD for new MacBook Pro and FCP editing performance

I will be purchasing a new MacBook Pro and I'm curious about performance as it relates to large FCP projects. I'm looking to hear from folks who can help me determine if a solid state drive (SSD) would be worth the extra cost. I edit large FCP projects and I'm curious if using a SSD would be the way to go. Will I get better editing performance with a SSD as opposed to the 7200 RPM HDD?
    Thanks!

As a boot drive, SSDs have exceedingly last fast access times, and great data throughput rates. My Crucial SSD has a write read of about 200 MB/s. I can boot in under four seconds, and access apps, and web sites pretty **** fast.
However, beyond this, I don't see any real, substantial or dramatic gains in editing performance at all as a boot drive. I'd save your money on get more RAM, and best CPU and GPU you can afford.

  • I am having trouble trying to format / clone image to a M4 SSD for my MAcBook Pro (model A1211)

I hope someone is out there today.  I recently bought a Crucial M4 SSD (512 Gb)  When I tried to clode my Lion HD using SuperDuper I got an error message half way through the process (destination no longer available; try again.)  When I tried again, SuperDuper would not recognize the SSD.  I then downloaded and tried to use Carbon Copy.  It also took me about half way through and failed.  After that failure I could no longer "see" the SSD (i.e. the icon disapeared.)  I tried to reboot from the SSD using the Option key.  The system sees the SSD, but will not boot from it, which is expected since it did not complete cloning.  I thought that if I used Disk Doctor I could just start over.  It won't let me do that either.  When I try to erase the image it won't let me.  When I look at properties for the SSD it shows on 1 Gb of capacity.
Does anyone know of a way to "reset" the M4 SSD to a null state so that I can try again, or should I just return it as defective?

It sounds like it would be best to erase it completely and start the cloning over again. You can completely erase the disk by going to your Utilities folder and then to your Disk Utilities Application.
Choose the partition (the field that is under the hard drive) of your SSD in the side bar and then go to the "Erase" option. MAKE SURE that it is your external SSD and not the hard drive you are trying to clone. Choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) option under format and then click erase. This will clear the disk and allow you to start over. I would recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner from the start and using it through. You might also want to consider that you got a bad hard drive. This is sometimes the case even with new hard drives.
    Hope this Helps

  • Thoughts on Best SSD for 13" MacBook Pro 2.7/2.8 i7.

Did a search, found tons of posts on SSDs, but they mostly date back to 2009-early 2011, talk about SATA2, 3, TRIM etc... Looking for a SSD that is current and work with model posted in title and what I will need to get max performance out of it—TRIM enabler etc...Thanks

If you got 3 answers you'd probably get 3 different answers   I looked at OCZ, Samsung, Crucial Tech, and OCW (macsales.com) and decided on Samsung. I've been happy. My brother chose Crucial and he's just as happy.

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.

Ideally, you should clone your HD as Bimmer 7 Series explains.
However, if your computer originally shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, a clone is not necessary to merely reinstall OS X. OS X Internet Recovery will create a recovery partition, download the installer package, and install it on a completely empty SSD or HD.
Even if your computer shipped with Snow Leopard, it may be eligible to download a firmware update that creates the same ability: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904

In view of the fact that there are numerous applications that run properly while creating a lot of internal heat in a MBP indicates that it does not follow that heat is an inhibiting factor (within designed parameters).  Thus my comment is certainly not opion, rather fact.  You certainly are entitled to your reply but a third party reader should be be apprised of what the facts are.

You should check with the software publisher. Although you will need a separate iPad version of the program, some publishers make the iPad version cheap or even free, knowing that you have to buy the Mac or PC version to get the most out of the iPad version.

Which model of memory upgrade should I get for my MacBook Pro early 2011 model? I now have 2 - 2GB modules.

Installing RAM in a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro
There is really only one way to install RAM into a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro and while there are hundreds of DIY videos online, I just like this one, found on YouTube, by “macmixing”.
Note that there is a difference in the RAM that should be used in 2011 and 2012 models.
    2011 models must use:
    •204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    And 2012 models must use:
    •204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    So here's the video:
Remember that the 13", 15" and 17" 2011 models (early or late) and the 13" and 15" mid-2012 non-Retina models can handle 4GB, 8GB or (unofficially, but, believe me, it works) 16GB of RAM. There are, in my opinion, only two 100% Mac-compatible vendors out there: Crucial and OWC. I really can't recommend any other brands, even though it may work, as these are the only brands that I've personally used in quite a while. Also remember to stay away from any RAM that is a “value” brand - Macs are picky about RAM and often these value RAM modules just don’t work very well.
    Good luck,

    Yes.

Software updates don't upgrade your current operating system to a new one, you have to purchase a newer operting system if you want one.
If you want iCloud, first you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.6 (10.6.8 preferred), then you can download Lion from the app store.
Snow Leopard requirements:  $29 USD from Apple : http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A

    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space

  • Which is much better for me, MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display or MacBook Air 13"?

Hi! I'm a High School Student, and I really need help in choosing the right MacBook. So which is which?
I'm really confused in choosing which MacBook suites. I have been researching about the specs of each MacBooks; some websites say "MacBook Pro is much better" while the others "MacBook Air is better than the Pro". I'm totally confused! And PLEASE HELP ME!
Here is what I need for a laptop:
*I will use it for Editing Videos and Photos
*sTORAGE for my Documents! (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Adobe)
    *PRINTING documents and stuff
*Great Quality for Movies, Videos, and Music
    *GAMES!!! (Assasin's Creed, Sims, etc.)
    *Other Apllications
    *Storage for my stuff
*Best performance for INTERNET, SOCIAL SITES, & ENTERTAINMENT
    *Handy and Easy to use
*Lightweight ('cause I have to bring it to school for reports and I have to bring i to to different places for conventions or seminars)
*STORAGE for my Photographs, Music, Movies (edited and downloaded)
    *Long Lasting Batteries
    *FAST and  QUICK
I'm really confused, which shal I choose: MacBook Pro because it has the best performance or MacBook Air because it is very convenient.
I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IF YOU HELP ME.

Unfortunately, you mentioned "GAMES!!!" - no Mac notebook is a good gaming machine (sad but true). For everything else, however, I would recommend a MacBook Pro (Retina or non-Retina - whichever you prefer, although my preference is for the non-Retina: it lacks the portability of the Retina but is user upgradeable whereas the Retina 13" machine is limited to 8GB of RAM, soldered onto the logic board, and a 'fixed' storage space).
I haven't looked at the specs but I'm assuming that the Retina model would be only slightly heavier than the Air. But it would out-perform the Air should you desire to try games with it.
Good luck - we get these "what shall I buy" questions all the time but, in the end, it's your decision.
