Which telephoto lens to buy for Yellowstone trip

Hi Forum,
I am going for a trip to Yellowstone National Park this May end. I want to buy a telephoto lens to shoot wildlife.
I am confused between EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM ,  EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM  and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM .
I am unable to decide which lens would be better suitable for wildlife photography. I have a Canon T2i and currently using the kit lens 18-55mm with it.
Any suggestions on what lens should I go for???

My dilema is not just regarding Yellowstone National Park. I want to buy a lens that will accompany me to almost everywhere and can be used to take long distance shots.
What you said is absolutely true, I cannot decide between extra reach of 100mm and aperture.
And the reason you can't decide is, there is no one right answer.  Welcome to the black hole of SLR photography.
I've been in the same dilemma myself for some time now.  I’ve been dreaming about a big white zoom for years and finally started seriously considering the purchase a year ago or so.  So I got on these websites and started doing my research and long story short…  I bought a 6D!  Didn’t see that coming.  So now my problem is worse, as coming from a crop, 200mm isn’t very long on a full frame.
I do suggest renting if you have the ability to, it helps put things in perspective.  It’s easy to get jaded online as everyone fawns over the big boy lenses (70-200 II, 24-70 II…) and you get to thinking that a lowly 100-400L or 70-200 I can’t be very good.  They are good, and if you don’t spend your free time shooting pictures of test charts then you probably won’t notice the difference.  The 100-400 wasn’t even on my list until I used one for a weekend.
And finally, intended use maters.  Pesonally I’m leaning towards the 70-200/2.8 because I want a fast lens and I LOVE thin depth of field.  However, if I was getting ready to go to Africa on a safari there’d be no question that I’d be buying a 400mm lens.

  • Which telephoto lens for the 70D

I have a Canon 70D and am interested in a telephoto lens for it. I own an EF18-135 IS, an EF 55-250 IS USM and recently purchased a new EF 70-200 F4 L USM (non IS, that was a mistake). I am thinking about getting the new EF 100-400 L IS II USM but I'm not sure if, for the money, it may be smarter to get the EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM and put a 2X extender on it thinking that way I can take the extender off and have a top of the line 70-200. I realize it would be F5.6 at 400mm but so would the new 100-400 and it will never be an F2.8. Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated, just remember I'm a newbie. Thanks

I wouldn't recommend anyone buy the old 100-400 at anything close to the regular list price until we know a lot more about the new version AFTER it's been in use by the general population. That said I'll add that it took me a long time to adjust to using a push / pull zoom but once I did I can easily say that helps me get better results. By using it vs a twist to zoom lens my hand is at the front of the lens right where the hood mounts giving me a more stable hold (support) than if that hand was near the back of it. The new lens will be even heavier so you'll need to find a way to hold it, twist it & control it's weight.
Because I shoot fast paced action at slower shutter speeds lens IQ isn't as important as my panning skills so I really find it hard to believe I'd see a noticeable improvement to what I shoot but many others probably will see a difference. I bought my 100-400 in late 06 or early 07 & it still delivers nice sharp images & is one of the 2 lenses I shoot a lot.

  • Which camera should I buy for a first timer

Hello everyone. This is my first post here. I am a 22 year old student at a college majoring in electronics and communications. Soon as am done with college am moving to a film school to learn about filmmaking. However, right now am educating myself with filmography and video shots by reading books. The only thing left for me is buying a camera. Which camera do you guys recommend me buy for a first timer ? Same thing with accessories. My budget is 1000 USD
Many people in other forums recommened the Canon T3i
Do you guys think I shoud start with a camcorder or a DSLR for a starter who wants to learn filmography?

This is a slightly complicated question.
A camcorder is specifically designed for video.  But a DSLR camera is designed for still image and can also shoot video.
But there is one reason why video users are extremely interested in DSLRs... and that has to do with the lenses.
There's a massive number of lenses available for DSLR cameras on the market.  For many camcorders, you lens isn't removeable -- the lens it comes with is all you get.  For those with removeable lenses, the selection is limited and they tend to be expensive (economies of scale).  If you want to draw a viewer's attention to a subject by using selective focus, then you'd want a narrow depth of field and draw to the focus to your object of interest within the frame... there are many lenses for DSLR cameras that can do that.  But with a camcorder, your ability to create strong out-of-focus areas is more limited due to the lenses.
So... apart from the lenses (but that's a _really_ big deal), just about everything else about a camcorder is better for shooting video.
When displaying video digitally, a 1080p image is 1920x1080 -- or about 2 megapixels.  All the recent Rebel bodies can record 18 megapixel images (for still photos).  This means the camera has to resample the image for video purposes.  The sensor wasn't really designed for that non-stop extended recording use and it can get hot.  Hot can mean noise in the image.  Camcorders are designed for extended recording and tend to not get hot.
Watch any high-end film and count the number of seconds before you see the camera angle change.  You'll likely notice that the angle is changing faster than every 10-15 seconds.  It changes all the time.  A 30 second clip would be _really_ long.  They tend to take lots of short clips and weave them together to make a story.  The need to shoot a birthday party whilst walking around with a camera for 20 or 30 minutes in one really really long clip just isn't done in a pro video world.
If you do decide to go with a DSLR, I'd nudge you toward the T5i because of it's hybrid AF system and ability to exploit full-time auto-focus (although in pro video you may find yourself doing manual focus more often then you might guess) with the silent focus motors of the new STM lenses that are so quiet the in-camera microphone cannot detect any noise from them.
The 70D also promises to be a very good camera for video but has not yet started shipping (pre-orders are available) -- but it's also out of your price range.

  • I need to know which install disk to buy for my mac serial number 17*****ZE4

Need to know which install disk to buy since I lost my original.
    <Edited by Host>

You have an 24" Early 2008 iMac. It came with Mac OS X 10.5, and you would need the disk set for your specific model. It's possible that if you call Apple Support, they can still sell you a set, but that model of iMac is no longer supported by Apple so Support may not be able to help. If not, then you'll need to look to private sellers or companies that sell obsolete software.
You can also call the online Apple Store and purchase a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

  • Which silicone case to buy for Nano???

    Hi,
I just received a brand new iPod Nano from Apple. I had one earlier but got it replaced because of faulty display. I am still keeping this one in wrappings because the first one scratched insanely easy...
So this time I will buy a case. Which one should I buy? Does the Ipod Nano tubes sold in applestore protect the display as well? If you know a good silicone cover that protects the display as well, please let me know.
    P

I use the ezskin by ezgear, it is a silicone case with a hard screen protector. It works great. It has a belt clip(like the ones on cell phones) it is removable. It also comes with two lanyards, one that is for the wrist and one for the neck. I really use my Nano. It is not a show piece, but a thing that I really enjoy listening to music on. I put it from day one in the case. I have never taken it out of the case and could not tell you if the body is scratched. I did scratch the heck of the hard screen protector, I am waiting for displex, but for now am using a pda protector. It is working fine. As I said I really use it, at least hard enough to scratch the heck out of the hard screen protector. I only took that off, because I wanted to try the pda protector. I could always read my play lists and even see my photos. So I really recomend this case. But I have heard great things about the duo. Just put it in the case and ignore all the scratch mongers. When you use it for what it is intended and just give it the care of a case it is an awesome tool to be used and enjoyed. Hope this helps. P.s. my wife has the same case in black for her black Nano. She is much easier on hers and her screen protector looks like new and she loves it.

  • Which video card to buy for Mac Pro and AE CS3

I am about to purchase a new Mac Pro and am curious which video card to buy - particularly when it comes to rendering speed.
Apple offers the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 as a standard option, with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 as a $150 BTO option.
I primarily use AE CS3 using adaptive resolution in lieu of Open GL. The projects are very 3d intensive. My initial thought is that the NVIDIA card has more VRAM and would be a better pick - but would my $$$ be better off toward more RAM? Does using CS4 make a difference?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. And yes, I have searched the forums but have not found anything definitive.

Personally, I'd buy more RAM. The standard display card supplied with the Mac Pro will have perfectly good specs for AE and Prem Pro.
Yes, CS4 should render faster than CS3.

  • Which Mac Pro to buy for Studio 3

Guys, I'm in the process of upgrading my trusted Power Mac G5 Quad to a Mac Pro.
I will also upgrade to FCS 3.
My question is, which Mac Pro to buy? Quad 2.93 OR Octo 2.26?
Will FCS 3 along with Snow Leopard utilise ALL the Octo's processors? Or am I better off saving the money and sticking with a Quad?

If your income depends on this work, then buy the biggest, baddest, most RAM-filled Mac Pro you can.
At least get the octo 2.66. Put 12GB RAM in it, if you can, but put a minimum of 6GB in there. The concept is that as a professional editor, editing for clients, you must be as time efficient as you can afford to be.
Compressor will use that RAM to compress your stuff a lot faster. Also, Motion can make use of as much RAM as you throw in there. Final Cut Pro itself, not yet.

  • Which NIC should I buy for Oracle Linux Server 6.4

    Hi,
I am trying to install Oracle RAC 11g R2 onto my laptop PC - Lenovo T400s. I have installed Oracle Linux Server 6.4. The OOTB NIC was recognized by OS and eth0 is fine but I need one more NIC for RAC. RAC needs two NIC for public IP and private IP. Now I want to buy NIC for either USB or express card for the second NIC but I don't know which one to buy. Most of NICs that I find on the Internet is supported by Windows or Mac but I could not find any that says it is supported by Linux. Could someone tell me which one I should buy so  I can download driver from the company website and compile from source hopefully..
    Thanks,

    hello,
you can build a rac on 2 laptos, sure
are some requirments , like shared storage
RAC will take, RAW device, block device, that can be SCSI, SAS, iSCSI, or lun by fiber channel, here in your setup, you wioll need to read about iscsi and use an storage
other option is use NFS, this will be more easy to implement.. if you have a 3rd machine you can setup it as NFS and mount the NFS int he 2 laptos
Good luck, is a doable task

  • Which is a better buy for college a non-retina display 15 inch macbook pro with a 2.6ghz processor or a 2.9 ghz 13 inch non retina max specs macbook pro both with 8 gb of ram will be using to write papers basically for general use im a Science major

im a college student im studying to be a vet tech and i want this computer too last which a more sound investment the non retina macook pro 15 inch with these specs:2.6 ghz 1 tb ata hd with 8 gb of ram or a maxspec 13 inch mac book pro: 2.9 ghz 1Tb and 8gb of ram any help is appreciated thank you

    Hi,
I am a researcher so I store a lot of papers, data, and use numerical software. I have had a 17inch high spec macbook pro for over a year now. I find that apart from the large screen, it was unnecessary to get the high specs. This is why. Firstly, the hard drive is easy to replace and upgrade, apple charge a lot for their own ones. Secondly, the ram in my one was upgradable (which i didnt know when i bought it) and i since upgraded to 16gigs from 8 and its amazing. Thirdly, the newer macbook pros run hotter than the previous ones.
The retina is overrated and the programs for retina need more memory and processing power, so what you find is that your hard drive will get taken over sooner, your mac will run hotter, and battery life lower.
I would say to you, dont worry about the processor speed, the normal speed offered is perfect, more than that is not necessary unless you are running highly demanding apps, the mac will run hotter too. Dont bother getting a large hard drive in the macbook. Get a flash SSD drive, and buy a good portable 2tb HD, like a WD one, and use that to store as much of your work as possible. I believe apple started soldering their ram cards to the motherboard or something so that people cant upgrade. Check in advance and see if the macbook you want can be ram upgradable, then get a lower ram model and buy good 8gb ram cards to make 16gig. Very very easy to install them, took me about two minutes to do mine, it will be much cheaper.
If I think of anything else i will post back. Dont forget to install GFX card status too and use integrated only when on battery, i get up to ten hours of battery life without wifi, around 8 with wifi.
edit. I forgot to mention that if you buy your mac and try to open it you will void the warranty.

  • Which Soundcard should i buy for Musicproduction on new iMac ?

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy a new 20" iMac Intel. The main use will be Music Production as in Home Recording Studio. My question is for reasons of Budgeting. I'm now a Windows user and for music production I use Steinberg System 4 which includes the Steinberg MI4 Soundcard and SL 3.1.
So... with all the Cubase SX/SL 4 speculation and that it will "probably" come out around end of the year after Vista comes out.... blah, blah, blah. I wonder if my System 4 will work at all on the new iMac.... yes i open this question on the Steinberg forum.
Well, i would be maybe willing to buy a whole new SoundCard.... so...
    1) Is the Soundcard in the new iMacs good enough or should i get a better one? (I'm a Home Recording guy willing to invest some good ammount of money to get as good recordings as i can for a Home Recording Studio.)
    2) Can somebody recommend me 2-3 different SoundCards for the new iMacs that i could buy ? (Please not more expensive than 300 EUR or equivalent in USD. I think more than 300 EUR is not worth investing in a SoundCard, is it ?! IMHO... if yes no more than 500 EUR)
Oh yeah, i am using a MindPrint EnVoice II with DI-MOD, so that pre-amp with compressor is enough for me, the Soundcard doesn't has to have a good preamp and compresor stuff neither tons of inputs. I record through my MindPrint one Instrument/voice at a time. For Drums i simply use BFD from XPansion, so i don't have to mic that.
    OK, thanks for your advice!
    Cheers!

    Hi,
The iMac is built more like a laptop with very little room inside for adding/changing anything apart from RAM.
You could use the internal sound card of the iMac but getting an external audio interface will provide both more sound quality and flexibility.
Here's a link to suggestions about choosing a suitable audio interface : http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1461454&#1461454
If you search through the Garageband and Logic forums you will find even more on this subject.
    Hope this helps.

  • Which Mac Pro to buy for Music Production

    Hi All
    Hope you can help.
    Currently I have a macbook pro ( 2.66Ghz + 4GB ).
Im planning to buy a mac pro for music production, which is better
    4 Core 2.66Ghz Nehalem CPU + 3x2GB or
    8 Core 2.26 Ghz Nehalem CPU + 6x2GB
Im heavy on VST/AU's, use a fair bit of audio samples and also will be using a load of ROMpler style sampler instruments.
Im also looking to future proof the system but if the 8 core system is unnecssary for using logic studio id rather get the 4 core option as its easier on my budget.
    Im also planning to run 3 x 1tb HDD's ( 1 x OS / 1 x Samples / 1 x Music )
Hope you can advise as itching to buy one with my commission money
    Cheers

I've heard from a few Logic users and read on other forums that there is currently little difference in performance between the 8-core and 4-core Mac Pro's when running Logic 8. This may change in the future...?
Really? The benchmarks seem to indicate that the 8 x 2.26 is 30-40 % more powerful than the 4 x 2.66, a significant difference...
Personally, I'd get a quad core and spend the difference on ram (from crucial.com) as this will make more of a difference when running power hungry plug-ins.

But the 4 core has a max RAM of 8 GB where the 8 core maxes to 32 GB. Might be worth considering.

  • Which Mac Pro to buy for Logic?

Hi, I am a Logic Pro user, I use lots of tracks with automation, lots of virtual instruments and other plugins.
I've finally settled on getting a Mac Pro, since I want to use a UAD card, as well as for expandability. So now... Which one? For a given budget, do I want to:
    1) max RAM
    vs
    2) max clock speed
    vs
    3) max number of cores/procs
Eventually I'll get lots of RAM, so #2 and #3 are my main questions, which will get me the the biggest bang for my buck specifically for use with Logic Pro?
    Thanks!

    Things to consider:
At the moment, the single processor Mac Pros arent that great in terms of value. 4 memory slots is just kind of crappy for a machine that costs so much.
That being said, logic wont support more than 8 cores, meaning nothing above the quad core is going to be worth your money for strict use with logic. We have no idea when logic will support more cores.
Now is not the greatest time to be buying a Mac Pro for various reasons. What kind of budget are you on? Your best bet might be a refurbished 2009 quad core or a 2008 octocore.

  • Which macbook pro to buy for editing?

I will be buying a macbook pro for my future editing as i will be traveling a lot. I use after effects, premiere pro, sometimes fcp 7 and occasionaly blender and cinema 4d. I will be watching a lot of movies and playing games occasionaly. I have a late 2009 imac with 4 gigs of ram, 3.06 ghz dual core processor, 500gb hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB. It is quite slow in rendering. I use full hd footage and put effects in my videos such as muzzle flashes or maybe a planet in the sky(that kind of stuff). What software requirements do you guys recommend for a faster editing and rendering? I am ok if it takes some time in rendering but ofcourse not ages. And also which macbook pro do you guys recommend (also from the previously manufactured mcbp)?
    Thanks in advance.

Both will work fine with 1080p AVCHD but you will notice an increase in performance simply because Premiere LOVES a good GPU and the 750M is a good one as far as laptops go. Yes, its more but if you're serious about performance go with the better GPU.
That being said...save a bit and go with this below (same as your 2nd option but cheaper):
Refurbished 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Quad-core Intel i7 with Retina Display - Apple Store (U.S.)
It'll save you $400. Bam! Thank me later. Apple's refurbished program is top of the line. Comes fully warrantied and you can get apple care, etc. if you want as well. It's like buying it new. These refurbished computers are often just ones bought and then returned within a few days by customers trying things out and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. They can basically be looked at like new.
