Then get a PC, as neither of your two choices make good gaming machines.
That's the best advice in the thread.

  • Which to buy, Sony Bravia 40" 1080p or Samsung 40" 1080p???

Please help! I know nothing about tv's and don't know which to buy my boyfriend for Christmas.
    The Sony Bravia 40" 1080p 40S4100 or the Samsung 40" 1080p LN40A530.
They are both offered for the same price ($999.99) at best buy, but I found the Sony for $100 cheaper somewhere else.
Which would you recommend? He has a PS3 and a bunch of blu-ray movies and watched a lot of sports.

I would probably go with the Sony they are both at the top of the line as in brand wise but I think Sony is a better brand.

  • T440 or L440 for a student - not sure which to buy!

    I'd like some opinions please...
I am a student in the UK looking to buy a laptop around late August/early September 2014. I will require the following from it:
    Haswell i3 or i5
    8GB RAM
    1600x900 or 1920x1080 display
    Windows 8.1 64-bit
    Good build quality
Not too big or heavy, so a 14" display would probably be more ideal than a 15.6"
A touchscreen may be nice, but is not essential
I will be doing a lot of programming on it, so a good keyboard is a must, and I will be doing photo editing and web design on it too, so it needs to be powerful.
I would really like this laptop to last for a long time (and by that, I mean around 5-6 years) and to be well-built. I don't particularly have a budget, but the T440 specced out below comes to £835 and I'd say that is the very top of my budget.
I am keen on a ThinkPad (used to own an A31 and an R40) and looking specifically at the L and T series. I'd like to buy something new and with a Haswell processor.
I've specced out the following machines, do you think it would be worth paying the extra for the T440? Or would the L440 be perfectly adequate and last me as long as I'd like it to last?
    L440 - £653
    Intel Core i3-4000M Processor (3MB Cache, 2.40GHz)
    Windows 8 64
Windows 8 64 MUI EMEA WE (EN FR GR IT NL)
    14.0" HD+ (1600 x 900) LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready
    Intel HD Graphics 4600
    8 GB DDR3L - 1600MHz (2 DIMM)
    Keyboard - UK English
    Ultranav with Fingerprint Reader
    720p HD Camera
    500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer
    6 Cell Li-Ion Cylindrical Battery 56.16Wh
    65W AC Adapter - UK
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 BT Combo (2x2 AGN)
    Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable
    Publication - WE (FR/GE/IT/DU/EN)
    1 Year Depot or Carry-in
I could possibly buy a 256GB SSD for this to speed it up, or upgrade the i3 to an i5 4200M (but I think the only difference between the i3 4000M and the i5 4200M is the slightly higher stock speed on the i5 and the turbo boost?)
    T440 - £835
    4th Gen Intel Core i3-4010U Processor (3MB Cache, 1.70GHz)
    Windows 8 64
    W8 64 WE MUI
    T440 14.1HD+ WWAN
Intel HD Graphics 4400 with docking connector
    8GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600MHz SODIMM
    Keyboard - UK English
    Fingerprint Reader
    720p HD Camera
    500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
    ThinkPad Battery 3 cell Li-Polymer (23.2Whr)
    ThinkPad Battery 6 cell Li-Ion (47Whr) Cylindrical
Country Pack United Kingdom with Line cord & 45W AC adapter
ThinkPad Wireless 2 x 2 BGN with Bluetooth
    Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable
    Publication - WE (FR/GE/IT/DU/EN)
    3 Year On-site
I don't think I can spend more than this on a laptop.
My only worry is with buying the T440 is that it may draw attention and I may risk getting it stolen.  I'll need to think about that.
Is there any massive reason to buy a T series over an L series?
I have looked that the L540 with a 1080p display, but I'd prefer to stick to the 14" laptops for portability's sake.
I am genuinely interested to see which you think would be better.
    Thanks!

I recently acquired a T440s so I may be able to speak on some points, maybe not on others.
    My specs:
    i5 4200
    4gb RAM upgraded to 8gb
    Win7 64
    256gb SSD
    Integrated 4400 graphics
    1600x900 HD+ screen
3 cell battery (plus internal 3 cell)
    Other stuff..
I do not do anything worth mentioning with photo or video editing, but I do quite a bit of programming, typing, circuit simulation, etc...
The keyboard is very good. I have an R61 with what I always considered to be one of the best laptop keyboards I've used. This one is 99% that good. The trackpoint/trackpad combo works very well for precision visual programming like LabVIEW. The new trackpoint/trackpad setup is a point of contention among Thinkpad users, but I personally like it just fine. It is still WAY ahead of most cruddy touchpads out there no matter what you think of it.
Even though everyone raves about the new IPS 1080 screen on Thinkpads, the 1600x900 HD+ screen suited my needs fine, and I used to funds that would have been put towards the FHD screen to an external 23" IPS 1080 monitor. I will say, the 1600x900 TN screen really doesn't have the best color reproduction. I would not want it for photo editing. I would say either spring for the 1080IPS FHD display on the T440, get an external monitor, or both.
The i5-4200 with 4400 graphics has never left me wanting for more. It does all that I ask of it in simulations without any problems. The only CAD that I do is the occasional circuit board mockup so I can't speak to the effectiveness of the integrated graphics for your needs. I would look further into whether or not the integrated 4400 would be acceptable.
I am very glad i got the SSD. I picked up an external 500GB hard drive to handle backups and excess media. It's kind of a personal taste type thing. If you are OK with spending the extra money for less storage and a little pickup in speed then go for it. The fact that the SSD is not susceptible to damage from moving the computer around was important to me.
I find the computer extremely portable and light, though I am coming from a ~5.5lbs R61 that necessitated carrying around a 2lb power adapter due to nonexistent battery life. I get at least 5 hours out of the battery, usually more like 6 or 7 if I'm not doing simulations.
I don't know what it is like there, but I don't worry about theft in my college atmosphere. I guarantee if you put a Macbook next to a Thinkpad and walk away, the Macbook gets stolen. The Thinkpad is just an under the radar machine, and most students don't seem familiar with them. That said, my computer is never out of my eyesight. If you must leave it in a dorm room, get a good lock for it.
It's possible to save ~$40 and upgrade the RAM yourself. This procedure is not fun, but doable on the T440s. I have heard that the T440/T440P are easier to deal with.

  • Mac mini dilemma! Dont know which to buy..

I was wondering what you guys think, i am thinking of getting a mac mini to use as a "media center" sorta pc because their small quite and the software seems to be alot more stable then vista. I saw one on amazon for $450 that has a 1.66 core duo processor and the 60gb hard drive. or i can get the core2 duo for $589 (or $600 from apple. Is it worth spending the extra $150 on the newer processor and the 80gb hard drive (20gb more)? Im not going to be doing gaming or photoshop like i said using it as a media center pc (dvds, music, etc..).

To put it in a bit of perspective, I use a Mac mini as a media centre too, but mine is an even older 1.5GHz G4 model, hooked up to a couple of large hard disks which are used as media storage. Since the G4 processor is significantly less powerful than either of the CPUs in the systems you are considering, yet the mini is perfectly capable of serving up my movies, music, slideshows etc, it is safe to say that the 1.66 Core Duo model would be sufficient to the task you have in mind.
That said, I'm not sure that I would consider $450 for one with that specification to be all that good a price, particularly since the system would likely come with MacOS 10.4 rather than 10.5, and if the base configuration, would also only have 512Mg RAM. As such, I'd suggest you look at the on-line Apple store for refurbished minis. A current model 1.8GHz mini with 1Gb RAM and MacOS 10.5 can generally be had there for $499. The only drawback is that these sell very quickly when they appear, so you have to keep checking back until you can get one! Since the refurbished products from Apple are covered by the same warranty and are eligible for AppleCare too, there's no risk in buying refurbished, while the savings are quite reasonable.

  • Imac 27" which to buy

    Planning to buy Imac 27"
Wondering if I really need the faster 3.2 processor. I do intensive graphics work incuding photoshop and building video websites, but not sure if there is a meaningful difference between the 2.9 and 3.2 processors.
    Thoughts?

That's tough. The 3.2 comes with twice the video ram which would be worth while for video editing & apps like PhotoShop.
At either rate I would suggest adding some Ram (you can shop it around for less than Apple)

My printer is due for upgrade (6-7yr old !), do airplay printers work with standard laptops also? (Packard bell easynote),
ifso which is the cheapest but good one to buy? (probly from Tesco or argos and suchlike lol)
I don't even know what airplay is apart from the fact they work with my iphone/ipad.
    THANKS

I didn't know Packard Bell was still in existence .
You have to check the specs on the printer you wish to buy.  But in general, if you can connect a cable to the printer, the printer should work with your laptop.  I do not know if windows supports Airprint.  See if the printer supports windows wifi print.
    To print from the ipad/iphone, you need an an Airprinter.     {{ Airplay is to do with video on your tv.  }}
    List of supported AirPrinters.

  • MB 13" or MBA 11" of same price $60900.. which to buy..?

    Macbook 13" of core 2 duo 2.4GHz or Macbook Air 11" of 64GB SSD with 1.4GHz processor...SAME PRICE $60900
which is the best one to buy.. i'm an engg student... please guide me..

Hi. Since you're a student, I would obviously recommend the MacBook Air because it is MUCH more thin and light than the MacBook. If your primary use for the computer was anything other than taking it around and doing schoolwork, that's the MacBook for you
Go to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Reseller and see if the 11" screen size is big enough for you, and if you miss having a DVD drive. Those are really the only major differences between the MB and MBA. Good luck with your decision, and remember that with any purchase you have to assess what you're going to do with the product before you make that decision.

  • Apple DVI to Video Adaptor - The two available and which to buy...

    Hi there,
I have a Mac Mini and i'm interested in getting a Apple DVI to Video adaptor.
I have noticed there are two available, one of which is PAL.
Does this mean that on the other one, it is NTSC, and only that? and that the PAL one is only PAL?
Since im in the UK, my TV is PAL.
    Assistance is greatly appreciated,
    Many thanks,
    James

That is correct. The adapter triggers the Mac to either put out 50Hz PAL compatible video or 60Hz NTSC compatilble video. You can override this behavior, but only with a third-party application like DisplayConfigX or SwitchRes X. You might as well just get the PAL one in your case.

  • Macbook pro or air. Which to buy

13 inch Macbook pro retina 8gb/256gb or fully loaded 13 inch air 256gb? I want to get into ios app development so I plan on using xcode quite a bit. Also im a compsci major and will be graduating  in december. I plan on doing a lot of programming in various programming languages. Other uses will ideal college student uses ie writing papers surfing the web etc. Im leaning more towards mbpr because i keep hearing non retinas will be a thing of the past very soon. Also the mbp is supposed to be a little more powerful than the air which i think will be a plus when programming. i know this is a FAQ but i had to ask due to my specific needs.
Also i WAS going to wait for the big updates on mbpr but intels delays are a bit harsh. Idk if i can wait til mid 2015.
    Thanks in advance

    willecicci,
programming, writing papers, surfing the Web, &c. can all be done on older MacBook Pros. Both Mavericks and Yosemite (and thus Xcode) can be run on MacBook Pro models going back to 2007. If you’d rather wait for a big Intel update, then you could purchase a used MacBook Pro now, and sell it once a new MacBook Pro is offered with your preferred Intel hardware.

  • Which to buy airport express or extreme

I want to go wireless for my mac mini as well as use it to stream videos to my TV, use it for wireless printing and with my two iphones. Security is #1 however speed to almost of equal importance. I have my internet connection thru my cable company and would buy an apple TV for streaming video to my TV. In addition to buying and streaming video I would also use the TV to show my slideshows and video. What hookup would be best?

Unless you have an additional networking requirement to support wired clients, then the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) should be able to support all of your stated requirements.
Both base stations provide the same security levels and both allow for streaming. However, the Extreme does have the feature to operate on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz radio bands simultaneously, whereas the Express can only operate on one or the other at a time. The Extreme also support sharing USB HDDs and/or USB printers attached to its USB port, whereas the Express only supports a single USB printer.
Also, the Express, like the Apple TV, can be used as iTunes speakers, whereas the Extreme cannot.
The best hookup for the TV would be HMDI.

  • Final Cut Express 3.5.1 vs 4.0 on an OS 10.5- which to buy?

I have read many views that the FC Ex 4 is a downgrade from the 3.5 in reality. I was wondering if I should just buy the 3.5.1 version for my OS 10.5? Thoughts?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
3.5.1 is a downloadable update for final cut express HD 3.5.
This version will not be updated by Apple... ever.. since the current FCE version is 4.
My 3.5.1 works well under Leopard 10.5.2 and QT 7.4.5 on a PowerMac G5.
Any update for system or quicktime may be incompatible with 3.5.1. So if you are confortable to stay on a working system and don't rush on any updates (and desactivate automatic update), this version will get you more app (full livetype and SoundTrack) to make great content. But forget AVCHD and FXscript filters.

  • Not sure which to buy

Hello, I have a Mac computer that I do most of my photo work on. I recently downloaded a free version of Adobe Elements 12 and although I think I need a few classes I'd like to eventually purchase the product. However, I have 2 other PCs that I would like to also have the option of working in Adobe 12 on. Is there a way I can buy a hard copy to use on my Mac and my PC? Has anyone done this and how?

If you buy the boxed version you can do one mac and one windows or two macs or two windows computers. If you buy PSE as a download you also get two installations, but they must both be on the platform you purchased. So buy the boxed version.
I've always understood that, since version 9, all Elements serial numbers are multi-platform regardless of delivery method: disc or download. Why would Adobe distinguish between boxed and download?
    http://prodesigntools.com/how-many-computers-can-you-install-adobe-cs5-on.html
"Other Adobe products like Photoshop Elements and Lightroom are also always sold multi-platform, making it easier to mix-and-match Windows and Mac OS for your two installations."
